James L. Brooks’ first movie in 13 years now has a title, a studio and quite possibly a stacked all-star cast, TheWrap has learned.
“Ella McCay,” the comedy filmmaker’s first theatrical feature since the Reese Witherspoon/Paul Rudd/Owen Wilson rom-com “How Do You Know” in late 2010, will be distributed by 20th Century Studios. Emma Mackey and Albert Brooks are among those in negotiations to star alongside the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, Ayo Edebiri, Kumail Nanjiani and Spike Fearn.
“As one of the most empathetic dramatists of our time, James Brooks has set the bar across film and television for decades,” 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell said in a statement. “From ‘Broadcast News’ to ‘The Simpsons,’ Jim is also a foundational element in the bedrock of 20th and we couldn’t be more proud to support him in his long awaited return to the director’s chair.

In 1987, Dan Trachtenberg was too young to see John McTiernan’s R-rated Predator, but the older kids in his karate tournament carpool insisted on telling him the whole movie anyway. And at the time, Trachtenberg distinctly remembers a story involving Sonny Landham’s half-Sioux tracker, Billy Sole, who died in a dramatic fight with the Predator. The only problem is that no such scene exists, something Trachtenberg would later figure out. Billy does decide to face the creature head on, but the scene cuts away, leaving the audience with only his blood-curdling scream to infer death.
Oddly enough, rumors have persisted for years that Billy Sole’s full death scene was included in rare VHS releases or TV edits, but there is no concrete evidence to support that such a scene is anything but a myth. Thankfully, a mere rumor led to something very real 35 years later.

Walt Disney-owned 20th Century Studios has added four new creative executives to its roster under production president Steve Asbell.
Asbell, who succeeded Emma Watts in the top job last March, welcomes a slew of pedigreed creatives to his team including Sarah Shepard, Brian Dukes, Rashonda Joplin and Catherine Hughes.
“They are all stellar executives, and we’re fortunate to have them on board at a pivotal moment in our studio’s history, as we prepare to greatly expand our streaming output alongside our slate of theatrical films,” Asbell told Variety.
The upcoming 20th slate includes the Ryan Reynolds comedy action film “Free Guy,” the ensemble murder mystery “Death on the Nile,” “The King’s Man” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.” The four new hires complement a creative team that includes Scott Aversano, J. R. Young and Colin Greten.

Last March, Emma Watts, Fox vice chairman and president of production at Twentieth Century Fox Film, was a new recruit to Team Disney, shepherding her crew as they were ingested by another studio. She went along for the ride, hoping for the best.
Last week, after 22 years at Fox, Watts bid Disney good-bye, leaving in charge senior executives Scott Aversano, Mike Ireland, and Steve Asbell. While she ran Fox as a studio, she leaves behind a glorified Disney label. Her resignation memo stated her need to “pursue new opportunities.”
While that’s boilerplate language for high-profile executive exits, here it has the added benefit of being true. “They cut her off at the knees,” said one agent. “Fox remains as a pod for Jim Cameron. It’s another sign of the diminishment and Disneyization of that company. They’re dismantling it.”

Review By Peter Belsito
Stockholm was the best film I saw at the recent Whistler Film Festival in British Columbia.
Many of us are familiar with the term “Stockholm Syndrome”, a phenomenon where imprisoned or kidnapped hostages start to identify emotionally or politically with their captors. The Patty Hearst story is probably one of its most famous examples.
In the most legendary and spectacular case of “Stockholm Syndrome” — the 1974 Patty Hearst affair, the kidnap victim swung all the way over to the other side. Yet that was far from typical. Patty, the 20-year-old heiress who wedded herself to the “revolutionary” Symbionese Liberation Army, was photographed sporting a beret and a born-again moniker (Tania!) and a machine gun.
This is Not about that incident at all.
This film is about the original story from which that the term takes its name. And it is far more complex and interesting than the title might suggest.

Back in 2015, Ethan Hawke starred in Robert Budreau’s drama “Born to Be Blue,” about jazz trumpeter Chet Baker. Now two years later, the duo are reuniting for Budreau’s upcoming thriller “Stockholm,” also co-starring Noomi Rapace.
Based on Daniel Lang’s New Yorker article “The Bank Drama,” the film, written by Budreau, tells the true story of the 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis in Stockholm. Giving rise to the psychological phenomenon known as “Stockholm Syndrome,” the events grabbed the world’s attention when the hostages bonded with their captors and turned against the authorities.
No additional details about the actors’ roles were revealed, though production is slated to begin in April. Sierra/Affinity will be presenting the film to buyers for the first time at this year’s European Film Market in Berlin.

Hitting at the end of January 2014, That Awkward Moment is an awkward comedy aimed at that special moment in relationships when you just can’t dodge trying to figure out where you’re headed anymore. Apparently aimed at the decidedly young, and easily amused, the film has some new character posters, though I’m not absolutely sure what sense they make from the film’s perspective.
At any rate, take a look and see what Zac Efron and the rest of the crew are potentially embarrassed about.
