Under a starry western sky last weekend, Park City Song Summit founder Ben Anderson stood onstage and held court in front of an audience of creatives.
“We’re going to change the legacy and culture of music on this mountain,” Anderson howled into the evening chill, his voice echoing far and wide into the surrounding high-desert peaks of Utah. Then he dove headlong into a rendition of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”

Two years ago, Todd Snider returned to his troubadour ways on Cash Cabin Sessions Vol. 3. It was his first album full of the type of sardonic Nashville hippie storytelling Snider’s best known for (and has long mastered) since 2012’s post-Occupy opus Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables. After a year of isolation, devastation and loss of close friends, Snider is back with First Agnostic Church of Hope and Wonder, an outgrowth of the loose livestream performances he’s has been offering in quarantine over the past year.

Todd Snider’s live shows are unparalleled experiences. The folk singer delivers hilarious, heartbreaking songs about his life, punctuating them with stories that can stretch as long as 18 minutes — about everything from the time he joined a Memphis cover band called K.K. Rider to the time he took mushrooms and immediately quit his high-school football team. “When people on the plane ask me what I do,” says Snider, “I say, ‘Pretty much just like “Alice’s Restaurant.”‘ I just talk. It’s a nervous tick.”

The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television revealed the winners for this year’s screenwriting showcase on June 8 via a virtual Zoom ceremony attended by nearly 70 Mfa screenwriting students, faculty, and staff.
During the event, host Cat Wilkins acknowledged the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd and encouraged support and allyship for the Black community. The attendees ordered in from Black-owned restaurants during the virtual ceremony and were surprised by special guests including Pose co-creator and UCLA Alum Steven Canals, Oscar-winning filmmaker John Ridley, and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman.
“I know this is a really strange time culturally, and it may not feel like a time you want to celebrate, but you should absolutely take this opportunity to pat yourself on the back,” Canals said. “Stories matter. Stories are important. That is the way that we reflect our humanity…and heal the world.

In 2009, Anders Osborne found himself at rock bottom. He was bankrupt, his house was in foreclosure, his wife had kicked him out, and he couldn’t see his two young kids. His livelihood was playing gigs, but he couldn’t even do that — he’d often show up too drunk or high to perform. “For close to a year, I’d [either] try to find a friend’s couch to sleep on [or] I lived in the park,” says Osborne, a New Orleans-based singer-songwriter who’s collaborated with everyone from Phil Lesh to Tim McGraw.

Exclusive: Veteran stuntman Conrad Palmisano has been named to replace Stephen Collins on the SAG-aftra national board of directors. Collins resigned from the board in October after an audio tape surfaced that purports to be his voice confessing to having had sexual contact with children.
The union’s board replacement committee recommended Palmisano for the post, and the national board voted unanimously for him to finish out the rest of Collins’ term, which expires in 2017.
Palmisano is a familiar face at the guild’s offices, having served on the SAG board, on and off, since the 1970s. He co-chaired the SAG stunt and safety committee for many years. A former president of the Stuntmen’s Association of Motion Pictures, he has more than 200 film and credits as a stuntman and stunt coordinator dating to the early 1970s. He also has dozens of credits as a second-unit director.

After releasing a string of nebulous teasers in the past couple of weeks, BioWare Austin has finally unveiled its latest action-oriented RPG, Shadow Realms.
During EA’s Gamescom conference, Jeff Austin, the studio’s general manager, went on to outline the core concept behind the mysterious PC-only game.
“We want to bring back some of the creativity of a human game master who authors an ever-changing adventure right before you eyes. The Shadowlord controls every aspect of the game, possessing, entrapping and destroying. A continuously updated story, embedded in the online adventure, along with an ever-changing world, will ensure that no two trips will play out the same way.”
Set within a “modern fantasy world,” the new IP also features four player co-op where players will go up against the malevolent Shadow Lord. As Austin alluded to, Shadow Realms will also incorporate an episodic storyline that the studio plan to...

88 Films are a company that release some real oddities when it comes to movies, and most of them come from Charles Band’s Full Moon company. Doctor Mordrid is one of these, and hiding away in the nineties section of direct to video releases is very reminiscent to a certain Marvel character known as Dr. Strange. With a little research it comes as no surprise that Albert Band (who directed this along with Charles) once held the option to make a live action Dr. Strange movie, but when this ran out…the characters and movie were altered and yes, you guessed it we were left with Doctor Mordrid.
The fact that this could have been a Marvel live action movie from the nineties in many ways raises alarm bells,...

SAG yesterday released the official list of candidates for its upcoming national board elections. Notably, all of the open seats in La (the Hollywood Division) are held by MembershipFirst members, which means that, as was the case last year, Mf can at best maintain its level of representation on the national board. More likely, it will lose some of its board seats.
On the Hollywood divisional board, Mf could gain or lose, as all division seats are up every year. This contrasts with the national board, where approximately 1/3 of the 69 seats are up in any given year. The president and secretary-treasurer, who are ex officio members of the board, have two-year terms, and are not up for election this year.
Ballots in Hollywood and New York will be mailed on August 24 with a return deadline and tabulation on September 23. Election results are expected to be announced that evening.

Jeff Austin was appointed to the Screen Actors Guild's national board of directors by the guild's Hollywood division board at a meeting Dec. 14. Variety originally reported the news. A call to SAG confirmed the appointment.Austin, a member of the hardline MembershipFirst faction, takes the seat left vacant by ousted national board member Seymour Cassel, who was removed from the board in October and suspended from the guild for two years. Cassel had been found guilty by an internal SAG trial board of "conduct unbecoming a member" in relation to the sexual harassment of guild staffers. The appointment gives MembershipFirst, which controls the Hollywood board, another vote on the national board, where the moderate faction led by president Ken Howard holds the majority.

In Yonder Mountain String Band, where improvisational jams are the axis around which the group's entire live show turns, a comfortable, all-contributing dynamic is essential. With Adam Aijala’s guitar work, Dave Johnston’s banjo picking, Ben Kaufmann on bass and Jeff Austin on mandolin, the Yonder Mountain boys have found a formula that works: Take rootsy bluegrass influences, add in some rock ‘n’ roll, and seek out an adventurous audience. Following yesterday's (Sept. 1) release of his band's fifth studio album, The Show, Austin found some time in between entertaining house guests and a busy tour schedule to catch up with Paste and discuss the recording studio as a playground, the "jam band" label, and how much Yonder Mountain isn’t like Wilco.

The AFTRA Los Angeles results are in. Many candidates were reelected, but new winners include two Membership First leaders—SAG 1st VP Anne-Marie Johnson (AFTRA national board) and former SAG Hollywood Board member David Jolliffe (AFTRA Los Angeles local board)—as well as Membership First member Alan Ruck (AFTRA national board). They join several Mf stalwarts already on the national board (not sure about the La local board).
Johnson and Jolliffe bring a particularly interesting dynamic to the AFTRA boards. Johnson, for instance, in a recent video described running for the AFTRA board as “really distasteful for me” and accused AFTRA of leech[ing] off of [SAG].” Jolliffe, for his part, told me in an interview last summer that SAG was the “one union for actors.” These remarks certainly make one skeptical of their intentions as they join the AFTRA boards.

The controversial MembershipFirst faction of SAG announced Friday a slate of 33 potential candidates who will vie for openings on the national and local boards and go head-to-head with the newly formed opposition group, Unite for Strength.
Among the actors looking to fill Hollywood's 11 national board seats and 22 local seats are 11 new MembershipFirst candidates, including Scott Bakula, Keith Carradine, Charles Shaughnessy and Joely Fisher. Also on the slate are 22 incumbents to the board, including JoBeth Williams, Joe Bologna, and Lainie Kazan.
The announcement of the candidates comes a day before a crucial SAG national board meeting Saturday and two days after Unite for Strength announced its intention to contest seats held by those in MembershipFirst. Unite's 31 candidates include Amy Brenneman, Kate Walsh and Doug Savant.
MembershipFirst came to power in 2005 and currently dominates the Hollywood board, holding the majority of seats as well as backing current president Alan Rosenberg. The group is the controlling voice in the SAG contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, which is currently at a stand still.
Unite for Strength blames MembershipFirst for its hardline approach to the negotiations as well as its anti-aftra sentiment, which led to the unsuccessful campaign to get members to vote down the sister union's primetime/TV deal with the AMPTP.
In its announcement, MembershipFirst said its goals for the coming year include uniting "all actors under the Screen Actors Guild banner, protect actors wages and working conditions in all areas, fight for residuals in all media platforms, protect the right of every dues paying member to vote on SAG issues and to secure complete jurisdiction in new media."
Unite for Strength's main goal is to merge SAG with AFTRA, something the MembershipFirst faction has bitterly opposed in the last two attempts in 1999 and 2003.
