- Ran for re-election to Congress in 2000, but lost to Mel Carnahan, the then-governor of Missouri, despite the fact that his opponent was already deceased. Carnahan's widow Jean was appointed to his seat.
- Is of Norwegian descent on his mother's side, and visited his relatives in Norway as late as of 2003. When there he pushed politics aside, played the piano and sang a hymn at his family reunion in the local church (outside Bergen, Norway).
- Was a baritone in the "Singing Senators" barbershop quartet. The other members were Jim Jeffords, Larry Craig and Trent Lott.
- Inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians in 2006.
