Nefarious tells the tale of a convicted serial killer waiting on the day of his execution. On that day he has a last minute, court-ordered psychiatric evaluation. The doctor then needs to decide if this man is who he claims to be – a demon, Nefarious, who quite happily wants the execution to go ahead.
Much of the movie, possibly about 70% of it, is just the serial killer, played by Sean Patrick Flanery and the doctor (James Martin), played by Jordan Belfi, talking to each other across a table in an otherwise empty room. It’s a battle of wits and character, as the doctor believes he can’t be fooled into calling this man crazy, until he’s not...

"Doing what I cannot do, Father… This team… is yours." This looks terrible, but at least it's nice to make fun of it. A Faith Based Films company has released a trailer for a sports film called Running the Bases, opening in theaters in September. Let's state the facts: this is religious propaganda designed to corrupt and coerce people into becoming more devout. The story follows a small-town baseball coach who gets the offer to coach a successful high school team, but gets in trouble for mixing religion with coaching. It's an obvious response to the real incident in Texas regarding prayer during games, but the bias here is so strong and so revolting I can smell the stink through the screen. Starring Brett Varvel, Gigi Orsillo, Todd Terry, and Cameron Arnett. As a movie site covering new releases, I think it's important to clearly label this kind of religious...

Calling a faith-based release “preachy” could seem redundant, since these productions are designed as vehicles to evangelize. However, even within its spiritual niche, Alex Kendrick’s “Overcomer” shocks for being even more oppressively loquacious than some of its many big-screen cousins.
If every line of stale dialogue landed like a hammer to the head, audiences would walk out victims of blunt-force trauma.
Kendrick, who co-wrote this with brother and perennial collaborator Stephen Kendrick, directs himself as John Harrison, a beloved basketball coach and history teacher at a Christian high school in small-town America. Life’s idyllic until his self-image crumbles after the local plant closes, forcing thousands of blue-collar workers to move elsewhere with their families. Lacking players, John is reassigned to coach the cross-country team, composed of one athlete with asthma: orphaned African American teen Hannah Scott (newcomer Aryn Wright-Thompson).

“Angel Has Fallen,” the action sequel starring Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman, earned $1.5 million at the box office Thursday from preview screenings at 2,600 locations. It opens on 3,286 screens this weekend.
Lionsgate is releasing “Angel Has Fallen” following up from the success of both “Olympus Has Fallen” in 2013 and “London Has Fallen” in 2016. It’s the widest release this weekend as the summer comes to a close, with Fox Searchlight’s horror and thriller “Ready or Not” having already opened on Wednesday.
The studio is projecting “Angel” to open in the low to mid teen range this weekend, with independent trackers estimating approximately $13 million. For a comparison, “London Has Fallen” earned only $850,000 in its debut opposite a then record-setting weekend for Disney’s “Zootopia,” but it ultimately raked in a $21.6 million opening. The original “Olympus Has Fallen” opened to $30.3 million and grossed $170.2 million worldwide.

No matter the setting or circumstances, the solution to every dilemma found in Christian Evangelical films is getting closer to God. That certainly holds true with regards to “Overcomer,” the latest bit of bigscreen proselytizing by writer-director-star Alex Kendrick. The story of a high school basketball coach who’s forced to take over a cross-country program with only one runner, it’s Its one-note sermonizing should help it appeal to its target audience, but those not already in the fold will likely be left unmoved.
When economic hard times hit his small-town community, compelling many of his star athletes to relocate, coach John Harrison (Kendrick) watches his expectations for a winning basketball season go down the drain. To add insult to injury, he’s ordered by Principal Brooks (Priscilla Shirer) to take over the cross-country squad — an unwanted assignment made more difficult by the fact that only asthmatic new student...
