- Became captain of the Maple Leafs during the 1957-1958.
- Compiled a 17-26-4 record as Head Coach of the Maple Leafs (1988-1989). Played in seven NHL All-Star games (1955-1956, 1956-1957, 1958-1959, 1961-1962, 1962-1963, 1963-1964 & 1967-1968).

- His Irish father worked in the Sudbury nickel mines. His mother was of Iroquois heritage. He was the first player of Indigenous descent to score a goal in the NHL.
