Filming on Netflix teen series “Tú no eres especial” (“You’re Nothing Special”) kicked-off July 8, becoming the streaming giant’s first TV series entirely filmed in Spain’s northern region of Navarre.
The series marks a further step in Netflix’s bet on diversifying its shooting destinations in the country.
“Tú no eres especial” is produced by Oria Audiovisual, the indie company launched by Navarre-born producer Puy Oria, co-founder with filmmaker Montxo Armendáriz of Oria Films, whose credits take in features such as “Silencio Roto” (2001), “Obaba” (2005), “De tu ventana a la mía” (2011) and “No tengas miedo” (2011), mainly filmed in the region.

MADRID -- The Spanish film Obaba by award-winning director Montxo Armendariz will open the 53rd San Sebastian International Film Festival, organizers said Friday. Armendariz adapted the film, which will be in the festival's Official Competition, from Basque writer Bernardo Atxaga's 1988 novel Obabakoak. Starring Pilar Lopez de Ayala, Juan Diego Botto, Eduard Fernandez, Peter Lohmeyer and Mercedes Sampietro, Obaba was filmed in the Spanish region of Navarra. Armendariz won San Sebastian's top prize, the Golden Shell, in 1990 for Letters from Alou and the Silver Shell in 1986 for 27 Hours. The festival is scheduled to run Sept. 15-24.

MADRID -- Thirty high-profile Spanish directors are teaming up to create a series of television shorts criticizing the government in the run-up to general elections scheduled for March 14, the newly created group called There's a Motive said Thursday. Recent Goya award winner Iciar Bollain, along with Fernando Colomo, David Trueba, Isabel Coixet, Vicente Aranda, Imanol Uribe and Montxo Armendariz are among the directors who will create three-minute segments. The move comes on the heels of the Jan. 31 Goya awards ceremony, at which the Spanish Film Academy turned the gala into a platform against government actions they oppose. The government's handling of an oil tanker disaster, the war in Iraq, the alleged manipulation of information on public television and the rise in domestic violence are a few of the subjects of the shorts that will be entirely funded by the director-producers, the group said.
Blending an engaging, if hectic, storyline with powerful visuals and winning perfs, Mexican Guillermo del Toro’s psychodrama “The Devil’s Backbone,” has the helmer toning down the perverse, comicbook imagination of his first two features — the Spanish-language “Chronos” (1993) and English-language “Mimic” (1997) — in favor of a muted, warmer and more psychological approach. Though it fails in its final reels to capitalize on its early promise, pic is still stylish, accomplished and tremendously enjoyable fare. Pre-sold heavily to many major territories, it did terrific first weekend B.O. at home after opening April 20 on the back of heavy marketing.
Pic will do nothing to harm del Toro’s reputation as perhaps Latin America’s foremost genre talent. However, auds expecting the conceptual hi-jinx of the earlier pics — particularly the multiple award-winning “Chronos” — are likely to be disappointed, and the movie’s psychology is too bargain basement to be of much interest in itself.
