“Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light,” formats “Upside Down” and “Shaolin Heroes” and premium doc feature “Front Row,” offering a novel take on the Ukraine War, are potential highlights on Banijay’s powerhouse lineup at what promises to be one of the biggest presentations at next week’s London TV Screenings.
Mixing third-party pick-ups and Banijay productions, further scripted titles take in second seasons of two Banijay hits, the sumptuous and revisionist “Marie Antoinette,” and “Rogue Heroes,” a big WWII special ops adventure story which hit high ratings on BBC.
Unspooling over Wednesday Feb. 28 at BAFTA in three sessions, dedicated to factual, scripted and then formats, the Banijay@BAFTA lineup, as last year, the spread will give audiences a chance to catch up with high-concept adventure reality “The Summit” and “Deal or No Deal Island,” described as an “epic” recast of the format.

English director Edgar Wright clearly began his love affair with the horror genre long before he released his first actual scary movie back in 2021. From the hyper-violent amateur films of his youth to that memorable Resident-Evil-inspired episode of Spaced, it’s quite clear that the genre mashup of Shaun of the Dead -and the ensuing Cornetto Trilogy- was a lifetime in the making.
However, while the balls-to-the-wall satire of Hot Fuzz was just as well received as its zombie-spoofing predecessor, I find it strange that fans usually refer to 2013’s The World’s End as the weakest entry in the trilogy. In fact, I’ve always been baffled by negative perceptions of the film’s surprising tonal shifts and bizarre finale, as I think these unique elements make it a natural evolution of Wright’s previous work (though nothing can ever surpass the perfection of Hot Fuzz). And with the...

Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery is to lead Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight’s personal drama This Town for the BBC.
Knight’s six-parter is rolling the cameras in Birmingham and has cast a string of other British actors including Nicholas Pinnock (Marcella) and David Dawson (My Policeman).
Previously called Two Tone, the show tells the story of an extended family and four young people who are drawn into the world of ska and two-tone music, which exploded from the grass roots of Coventry and Birmingham in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, uniting black, white and Asian youths.
Universal Music Group’s Mercury Studios is co-producer and will “bring in an exciting range of high profile musical artists to help lay the backdrop for Knight’s incredible story,” according to the BBC. Mercury is co-producing alongside Banijay-backed Kudos and Nebulastar in association with Kudos North, Stigma Films and Nick Angel.

The BBC has commissioned a six-part drama about the UK’s ska and two-tone music scene, which hails from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
Two Tone (working title) will tell the story of an extended family and four young people who are drawn into the world of ska and two tone music, which grew from the grass roots of the English cities Coventry and Birmingham in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The music united black, white and Asian youths during a tough period for race relations in the UK.
The series also marks the beginning of a new deal between Knight and Banijay-uk backed Kudos, which gives the Deadwater Fell indie a first look at all of his future UK-based projects. The agreement also includes a commitment to grow the local workforce in Birmingham, using Knight’s Digbeth Loc Studios as a base.
Deadline first revealed Knight and Kudos were working on Two-Tone in November 2020.
News of the series, which will air on BBC1 and the BBC iPlayer, comes in the same month Knight’s lauded gangster drama Peaky Blinders came to an end on the BBC.
Kudos and Knight’s Nebulastar are co-producing in association with the former’s northern subsidiary Kudos North, Matthew James Wilkinson’s Stigma Films (Choose Or Die) and Nick Angel, the former Island Records A&r director who was a co-founder of Colin Firth’s Random Films.
Shooting will begin Birmingham at Digbeth Loc later this year.
“This is a project that’s literally very close to home and I’m developing characters and themes that are set in the early 80s but hopefully are very contemporary. Of course, the soundtrack will be sensational,” said Knight, who is creator, writer and executive producer.
Kudos’ Karen Wilson, Martin Haines, Phil Temple and Laura Conway are exec producers, along with Wilkinson, Angel and the BBC’s Tommy Bulfin. Banijay Rights will handle international distribution.
Ben Irving, Acting Director of BBC Drama said: “Steven has taken his knowledge of this time and place and used it to weave a brilliantly original and characterful drama, set against the musical backdrop of ska and two tone. We are thrilled to be able to bring this unique piece to viewers on the BBC.”...

Here on Den Of Geek, It's become something of a tradition that when the end of the year rolls around, and the big awards bodies almost determinedly overlook genre cinema, and that we compile a list of the underrated and underappreciated performances by actors in the last cinematic year.
We've tried to pick out turns that either went unnoticed in most reviews, or simply should have gotten more praise. It's less about the great performances that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences are sure to overlook, than it is about giving praise where it's due.
It's unusual that this is either the most wide-open race in a while, or there aren't nearly enough people talking about who will definitely win...

Bells, wires, computers are all part of the music in Edgar Wright’s The World’S End. As you head off to the theaters this weekend to see the film, have your ears on the lookout, or listenout, for Award winning composer Steven Price’s score.
Reteaming director Edgar Wright with actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, The World’S End reunites five friends who return to their hometown to relive an epic pub crawl from their youth. Along the way, the “five musketeers” uncover an alien invasion and soon learn that they are mankind’s only hope of survival.
Price joins the dynamic comedic team of Wright, Pegg, and Frost following the trio’s success with Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz.
His passion for music began early: a guitarist from the age of five, he went on to achieve a First Class degree in Music from Cambridge University.

A signature brew of camaraderie, knockabout humor, excessive quaffing, questionable life choices, hand-to-hand combat, and explosive surprises,The World’S End reteams director Edgar Wright with actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, following their hits Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007).
It stars Pegg as an immature 40-something who drags four friends on a 12-pint drinking marathon in the small English town of Newton Haven where they grew up.
The gang’s goal is to reach the final pub – The World’s End – even as events take an unpredictable turn.
The World’S End also includes Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan, and Rosamund Pike, and opens in theatres everywhere on Friday, August 23rd.

Edgar Wright has been chatting about the concluding instalment of his Cornetto trilogy, The World's End...
Arriving later this year is the final part in the Cornetto trilogy, The World's End. Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright are reuniting for the film, along with Nick Frost, which will join Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz in what promises to be a really rather special boxset.
But what's The World's End all about? Edgar Wright has been chatting to IGN about that very subject.
“It's a boy's night out movie gone wrong, Shaun was about where we live – our neighbourhood in North London. And then Hot Fuzz was about going back home. Home for me and Simon in terms of a small town. But this one is about looking backwards. It's more nostalgic. I think a lot about my adolescence. I think a lot about my adolescence...

Edgar Wright has discussed the ways in which The World's End fits into his 'Blood and Ice Cream' trilogy.
The director reunites with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost for the first time since 2006's Hot Fuzz on The World's End, which sees five friends reuniting to try and recreate an epic pub crawl from their adolescence.

"I think this one is our way of wrapping up, with some formality, the man-child aspect of the series," Wright told IGN. "There's an element within all of the movies that's about growing up.
"Shaun [in Shaun of the Dead] has to grow up to be a hero. In Hot Fuzz Nick Angel has to dumb down to Andy's level to save the day."
"There's a lot of American comedies in the last 10 years that have been about man-children or dealing with responsibility. But I feel that they never get too deep under the surface.

To mark the end of principal photography and, we like to think, as a Christmas present to fans, Simon Pegg has tweeted the first official still from The World's End, his reunion with director Edgar Wright and Nick Frost. It's the story of an apocalyptic pub crawl (aren't they all?) and so seems singularly suited for today when, er, no apocalypse has actually occurred despite predictions. The film sees Pegg play a slacker who reunites a group of friends to finish the pub crawl they abandoned years ago. Unfortunately, they're interrupted by some sort of large-scale event marking the end of days. Which is even more of a downer than an ill-timed chunder in your evening plans. This still shows Pegg's slightly Goth look, which couldn't be more of a contrast to Hot Fuzz's clean-cut Nick Angel. He's surrounded by the rest of the gang - Nick Frost, Martin Freeman,...

Celebrating its fifteenth year, The Moët British Independent Film Awards have now been announced, honouring some of the finest independent films released in Britain this year.
This year’s awards will be held on 9th December, and you can be sure we’ll be bringing you the results on the night as they come in. It’s been another excellent year for British cinema, and it’s always nice to see films like these get the recognition they deserve.
Last year, Paddy Considine’s powerful directorial debut, Tyrannosaur, swept the top awards, taking Best Film, Best Directorial Debut, and Best Actress; Lynne Ramsay took home the Best Director award for We Need to Talk About Kevin; and Michael Fassbender’s remarkable performance in Steve McQueen’s Shame was rightfully honoured with Best Actor (whereas the film was sadly absent from the Oscars at the start of the year).

Word that “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” filmmaker Edgar Wright would be reuniting with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost to complete their “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy” with “The World’s End” surprised many of us when the news arrived back at the beginning of May. All three creative minds have been very busy with a variety of projects since "Hot Fuzz," but with lensing set to begin in September, Wright and Pegg are beginning to tease out what fans can expect from their next collaboration.
Talking with go-to cinema periodical Empire in their native U.K., while the new film appears to be more mature than “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz,” Wright contends that “I would say it's darker, more personal and more silly." The movie is set to follow a pub crawl involving Gary King (Pegg) and four childhood friends (one of whom will be Nick Frost...

Robert here, with my series Distant Relatives, where we look at two films, (one classic, one modern) related through a common theme and ask what their similarities and differences can tell us about the evolution of cinema.
Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do
It shouldn't come as a shock that Blazing Saddles and Hot Fuzz have basically the same setup: outsider comes to small town where he has a hard time fitting but eventually becomes the only man who can save the village. It's not that Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg and Mel Brooks and his co-writers all coincidentally had the same idea. Truth is, the western and cop movie, the two genres being spoofed here, are the same genre only set 100 years apart or so. In both cases, an outsider protagonist (not even literal outsiders, moral outsiders like High Noon's Gary Cooper or Serpico's Al Pacino work too!

Cruising into cinemas last Friday was the latest effort from Brit favourite Richard Curtis. After dragging us to Four Weddings and a Funeral, then on for a tour of Notting Hill before showing us that all that really matters is Love Actually, the former Blackadder scribe turned director helped us aboard The Boat That Rocked. A comedy about DJs broadcasting rock’n’roll from pirate radio ships during the 60s, it’s a change of direction for Curtis moving away from sensitive rom-coms to more saucy lad humour and instead of Hugh Grant taking centre stage, it’s the cool music of the 60s and 70s. And now the soundtrack, packed with recognisable classics and dusted-off gems is ascending the music charts.
The two-disc CD box-set brings together so many of those definitive sounds of the 60s and 70s, from the bouncy harmonies of The Beach Boys (“Wouldn’t It...
