There is no shortage of criminal characters on television, most of whom we are meant to root against and revile.
However, a select few are so charismatic and good at their jobs that they make us wonder if they are the true heroes of their shows.
These characters are in it for the long haul, living out in the open and evading capture.
They may build a business empire or just maintain the solitary life of a freelance assassin, but whatever they do, it's done with style and a certain "why didn't I think of that" cleverness.
A fair number of these criminals inhabit shows that carry their names, like Dexter, Barry, and Ripley.
But many more operate within larger fictitious worlds that center law-enforcement heroes and recognizable moral codes.
Here are four of our favorite smooth TV criminals. We definitely shouldn't love them as much as we do, but...

The Money Heist(La Casa de Papel) gang might’ve pulled off their heist at last, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the story. The series’ spin-off — by Money Heist creator Álex Pina and his Sky Rojo collaborator, Esther Martínez Lobato — is centered around the character Berlin (Pedro Alonso), long before he finds out about his terminal diagnosis and takes the Royal Mint of Spain hostage. Starring Alonso, Julio Peña, and Begoña Vargas, Berlin follows the titular character as he attempts one of his most extraordinary heists yet.
“It’s a trip through the golden age of the character, when he robbed around Europe crazy in love,” Pina told Netflix.

Exclusive: Money Heist: Berlin actor Julien Paschal has signed with international management company Alta Global Media.
The actor appears in the Netflix series playing Francois Polignac opposite star Pedro Alonso and Samantha Siquieros, who plays his wife Camille.
Berlin, which comes from Money Heist creator Álex Pina and Esther Martínez, is based around the life of Berlin, a character from the original series played by Alonso. Vancouver Media produces the show for Netflix, which launched the series globally on December 29 last year.
Set in Paris many years before the events of the original, it sees Berlin as the leader of a criminal gang who undertakes a jewel heist that becomes complicated when he falls in love with the victim’s wife.
Paschal has also appeared in Antidisturbios, which is written and directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and in “Un Año, Una Noche” directed by Isaki Lacuesta.

Pedro Alonso, much like Berlin, the character he plays in Money Heist, is distinguished, charming and charismatic. The success of the Netflix crime series has made the Spanish actor a global star and his fame has only gone up since the launch, on Dec. 29, of Money Heist prequel Berlin, in which he reprises his role as the conniving, manipulative thief who is also a hopeless romantic.
Alonso admits to feeling “vertigo” at the level of media exposure that came with the international success of Money Heist but says he doesn’t worry about being typecast in the role. Instead, he sees the chance to return to Berlin in the spin-off series a “vital gift [both] narrative and professional.”
THR Roma spoke to Alonso about why Berlin is as much a romantic comedy as a crime thriller, the “paradox” of its central character, who is both a romantic and “an emotional terrorist...

Let's get this out of the way right off the bat: Besides the titular character and his penchant for pulling off elaborate heists, there's very little that connects Netflix's Berlin to parent series Money Heist.
While the prequel effectively expands the backstory of jewelry thief Berlin (Pedro Alonso) — who would go on to orchestrate the Royal Mint and Bank of Spain heists with his brother, the Professor (Álvaro Morte), and sacrifice himself to save the crew as they escaped — it functions as a standalone story that sees the character mastermind his own scheme: the epic robbery of $44 million worth of jewels from an auction house in Paris. With an entirely new team of amateur criminals working alongside him, Berlin sets out to execute his plan, but as the big day approaches, unforeseen obstacles and loose ends threaten their progress, leaving them vulnerable to arrest.

“There are really only two things that can turn a bad day into a great one: The first is love. But to be honest, that’s not for today. My third wife just dumped me. The second is a heist worth millions of euros,” future Spanish Mint robber Berlin, played again by Pedro Alonso, says at the very beginning of “Berlin,” the spinoff of from Money Heist (“La Casa de Papel”) which Netflix drops Dec. 29.
More precisely, in “Berlin,” he aims with his gang to steal €44 million’s ($47.5 million) worth in 63 jewels from 34 cities across Europe – Zurich, Milan, Saint Petersburg, and so on – in just one night, as they come together in Paris’ biggest auction house.
Netflix has also shared in exclusivity with Variety one of the very first images from “Berlin.”

The demise of a character often spells their final curtain call. Yet, Andrés de Fonollosa (played by Pedro Alonso), more notoriously known as Berlin from Netflix’s thriller series Money Heist (known as La Casa de Papel in Spanish), defies this norm. Despite his dramatic exit from the main storyline the enigma surrounding Berlin is back with his own prequel series to Money Heist, known as Berlin. Through Berlin, Money Heist fans will be able to learn more about the life of this morally ambiguous, borderline romantic, and multi-faceted character. Despite being second-in-command to the Professor (played by Álvaro Morte), Berlin’s...

There have been great films like The Matrix regarding the manipulation and rift between perception and reality. Consciousness is an unfathomable mystery that science hasn’t been able to explain. There is great intrigue, and perhaps this is tied to the new advancement in AI. Awareness, the new film by Daniel Benmayor, is hell bent on creating a narrative that would make us understand that perception creates reality. It’s indeed an interesting idea. The characters are in a world that reminds us of one of the 1980s Hollywood films. A teen-ish boy, an alcoholic father, and their existence in isolation on a boat. The plot seems to have taken memorable elements of The Terminator and The Matrix, which were then mixed together to prepare a decent concoction. There is a line in this film echoing the famous Schwarzenegger line, ‘Come with me if you want to live’. The film...

"You don't have as much control as you think you have!" Amazon's Prime Video has revealed the official trailer for a Spanish mystery fantasy action thriller titled Awareness, a film by Spanish filmmaker Daniel Benmayor. This premiered in Spain earlier this year, and will be available for streaming worldwide in October. A teenager lives with his father on the outskirts of modern society and runs small scams with his ability to generate visual illusions upon unsuspecting victims. Things get complicated when his powers get out of control in public, with a mysterious agency coming after him. As he tries to evade capture, Ian discovers he's not the only person with these powers and that his whole life has been a lie. This sounds like a very similar premise to Freaks (2018). Awareness stars Carlos Scholz, Pedro Alonso, María Pedraza, Óscar Jaenada, and Lela Loren. This one also reminds me of Hypnotic,...

In Money Heist, a group of strangers (all nicknamed after cities) band together to rob the Royal Mint of Spain with a plan created by the Professor (Álvaro Morte) and executed by Berlin (Pedro Alonso). New spin-off Berlin focuses on an earlier period in his life, which is touched upon in flashbacks in the later seasons of the original show. Find the trailer, which debuted at Netflix's Tudum event, below.
Berlin says there are only two things that can turn a bad day into a great one: love and a million-dollar payday. This is what keeps him razor focused on his lofty goals. So he’s preparing one of his most extreme heists yet — disappearing $44 million worth of jewels.
But first, he’ll need to enlist the help of some savvy criminals: Keila, a cybersecurity mastermind; Damián, an academic and Berlin’s close friend; Cameron, a loose cannon who...

Money Heist was one of Netflix's biggest hits, so it makes sense that we're getting a spinoff with one of its most popular characters.
Netflix dropped the teaser trailer for Berlin during its Tudum global fan event, and it looks like a worthy next chapter for the franchise.
As previously reported, Berlin tells the tale of the titular character, but the streaming service has hinted in the past that "now is the time for Andrés de Fonollosa."
Based on the latest teaser alone, there will be plenty of action, comedy, and, most importantly, heists.
Starring alongside Pedro Alonso is Michelle Jenner as Keila, Begoña Vargas as Cameron, Julio Peña as Roi, Tristán Ulloa as Damián, and Joel Sánchez as Bruce.
The trailer certainly hints at some surprises along the way, including the arrival of some familiar faces from the original series.

Netflix’s shake-up of its European operations — which saw the Sept. 29 exit of International Film VP David Kosse, a new role for Spanish executive Teresa Moneo and a new regionalized hub for all content across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (Emea) run by Larry Tanz — points to a broader strategic shift at the streaming giant toward faster-growing international markets to make up for domestic subscriber losses.
In the second quarter of this year, according to figures from UK-based data research group Ampere Analysis, Netflix ordered 97 new original first-run TV series or movies from outside the US, compared to 63 US commissions over the same period. This Money Heist: Korea article contains spoilers.
The breakout success of Money Heist took the world by storm. The original series, known as La Casa de Papel (The House of Paper) had been cancelled after it was first televised in Spain. But when Netflix picked the show up, it became a surprise hit, and blossomed into a global phenomenon that earned numerous prestigious awards and captured the title of Netflix’s second most watched series behind only Squid Game.
After the original series concluded in 2021, a Korean redux series was announced. For Netflix, it’s a no brainer – have the nation that produced the first most watched series redo the second most watched series. Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area follows the story beats of the original, in some places note for note, while also giving things a distinctly Korean flair. Álex Pina is going underground for his next Netflix project.
The streamer announced Monday that the “Money Heist” creator is developing a series based on a Spanish newspaper article published last year about an increase in the number of bunkers purchased post-pandemic.
Of the article, Pina said:
Some of the new shelters that were being built were luxury homes in the subsoil. Up to 15 floors down, with exclusive services such as cinema, pool, spa, gym and common gardens. With water and food to survive more than five years. An underground community for 75 people. And then we thought about what life would be like there. Social, family and romantic relationships, in an underground shelter to which they had hastily and exclusively fled.

Pina said Netflix has allowed him to produce “risky and different projects, which have been written with total freedom.”

Sandra Bullock is back on Netflix, and this time, it isn’t blindfolded in a post-apocalyptic horror (a la 2018’s “Bird Box”). Her latest feature flick on the streamer, “The Unforgivable,” directed by Nora Fingscheidt, debuted at No. 1 globally on Dec. 10 and generated 85.86 million hours of subscriber viewership. In the film, Bullock stars as Ruth Slater, a woman recently released from prison who re-enters a society that refuses to forgive her past or the murder she committed.
Fingscheidt joins a cohort of female directors and showrunners that dominated Netflix’s Top 10 lists for the week of Dec. 6-12, including Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”), Halle Berry (“Bruised”), Mary Lambert (“A Castle for Christmas”), Clare Knight (“Back to the Outback”), Maria Torres (“Anonymously Yours”), Mar Targarona (“Two”), Molly Smith Metzler (“Maid”) and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (“The Witcher”). Campion’s Western-drama — starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee — took the No.

“It is a memorable moment because it is the end of one cycle and the beginning of another,” Alonso said.
“Today I was talking to Jesús Colmenar and we were saying that now we walk into the unknown, open to whatever happens and without expectations," he said.
"I know that [the Money Heist writers] will give the series every possible twist and turn."
"The responsibility [of spinning off such a popular series] can be a burden and a prison. I hope we continue to have the courage to use this wonderful energy to risk everything again.”
