Nitv and Screenwest have partnered on a new initiative ‘First Voices’, calling for in-language documentary ideas from emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander screen practitioners.
The initiative reflects that 2019 is the Unesco Year of Indigenous Languages, which recognises the importance of language in identity, cultural history, traditions and memories.
The hope is that ‘First Voices’ will further develop the skills and increase the broadcast credits of emerging to mid-level Western Australian Indigenous writers, directors and producers, while sharing their stories with a national audience. Nitv and Screenwest will develop and commission up to two x 30-minute documentaries, intended for broadcast on Nitv in 2020. Filmmakers may submit multiple submissions.

Touch and Anzac Girls have won key prizes at the 2014 Australian Cinematographers Society awards for South Australia and Western Australia.
Aaron Gully took the best cinema feature award for Touch, a mystery starring Leeanna Walsman, Matt Day and newcomer Onor Nottle, produced by Triptych Pictures. Julie Byrne and directed by Christopher Houghton.
The best telefeature, series, TV drama or comedy trophy went to Geoffrey Hall Acs for episode four of Screentime.s Anzac Girls. Hall also collected the Milton Ingerson award for best entry overall.
Jim Frater Acs took the dual prize for best dramatised documentary for The War That Changed Us episode 1 and for Desert War- Alamein, both produced by Electric Pictures. Andrew Ogilvie.
