Exploited gets off to a start that certainly lives up to its title as webcam performer Caleb is beaten to death in mid-performance.
Move forward a few months to the start of a new school year and Brian (Jordan Ver Hoeve; 666: Teen Warlock) is moving into his dorm room and starting college life. After walking in on his roommate Jeremy and his girlfriend Lexi he starts to get settled in. He doesn’t notice a flash drive identical to the one the school gave him sitting on the desk. He’s in for a nasty shock as it contains videos of the online sexual activity of the room’s previous occupant. And, in the last video, being murdered.

"You sick, lonely webcam freak!" Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Exploited, from filmmaker Jon Abrahams. This is being dumped on VOD this week, and this trailer will paint a pretty clear picture as to why. A college freshman becomes obsessed with the previous owner of his school issued laptop. His quest becomes complicated when he falls in love with his roommate, who's already taken. The mysterious disappearance of the webcam model ends up with their lives being manipulated and blackmailed. The film "tells a provocative story set on a college campus against the backdrop of a voyeuristic hacker. Real world fears such as personal privacy and camming are explored in this psychological thriller." The film stars Sierra McCormick, Makenzie Vega, Leah Pipes, Will Peltz, Spencer List, Jordan Ver Hoeve, Colin Bates, and Hannah Rose May. It doesn't look like there's much to see here - skip it.

It was only a matter of time before the most powerful brothers in Hollywood got into business together. In the late ’90s, “Scary Movie,” a comedy that satirized slasher-killer movies, brought three of the Wayans brothers — Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Ivory — to the doorstep of Dimension Films, the boutique horror studio run by Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
According to Marlon, making “Scary Movie” with the Weinsteins for a summer 2000 release was indeed a frightening experience. And not just because he was abruptly fired from making the third movie in the franchise, “Scary Movie 3,” on a holiday.
“[The Weinstein’s are] not the best or the kindest people to be in business with,” Marlon Wayans tells Variety. “They’re very much an evil regime, I guess. They do what they want to do how they do it — and it can be rude and quite disrespectful. We couldn’t come to terms on the deal.

Clover is a crime action/comedy about a couple of Irish American brothers on the run from a Italian American crime boss, in the company of a precocious girl named Clover. The girl is there to make us think of Kick Ass, but Clover mines a host of other films in the crime action/comedy genre, pretty much to a fault. While the tropes are familiar, Clover puts them together well enough to present a serviceable popcorn entertainment for some audiences. It’s no Snatch, but it might do in a pinch for an afternoon of stay-at-home distraction, if you don’t expect too much..
Clover is not as clever as it thinks it is but it benefits from a strong cast, who provide much of the reason to watch it. Directed by Jon Abrahams...

The mobster comedy is by now such familiar terrain that it ought to have its own nickname, and that familiarity does not make breathing new life into the subgenre easier. Alas, there isn’t much fresh air to be had in “Clover,”
Despite a capable cast and reasonably energetic execution from director Jon Abrahams, this violent caper lacks any real wit or novelty (beyond congratulating itself a bit too much for including a lesbian couple as “hitmen”), ultimately leaning on tired stereotypes rather than doing anything particularly clever with them. Launching on various cable and digital platforms April 3, it’s a just-passable entertainment that may seem better to those who think “Boondock Saints” is an enduring classic.
You can certainly sense that lowbrow cult favorite’s influence in the dynamic between the brothers Callahan, two orphaned “micks” in an unnamed East Coast city running their family’s corner bar. Or at least they were,...

Two Irish brothers owe money to the wrong guy at the wrong time. While they go on the run trying to pull together the money, they become burdened with a teen girl and hunted by assassins they don't know are following their every move. Clover stars Jon Abrahams, Mark Webber, Nicole Elizabeth Berger, Chazz Palminteri, Ron Perlman, Julia Jones, Jessica Szohr, Michael Godere, Jake Webber, Erika Christensen, as well as Tichina Arnold. "The unexpected trio of Jackie, Mickey and Clover make for a modern twist on an American crime film - mixed with elements of dark comedy." This doesn't look so great, too much comedy not enough crime. Here's the first official trailer (+ two posters) for Jon Abrahams' Clover, direct from...

"We really don't know each other at all..." Signature Entertainment in the UK has unveiled an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled 10 Things We Should Do Before We Break Up. The title is a direct reference to a part of the plot, but it's also a bit too similar to 10 Things I Hate About You to be considered original. Christina Ricci plays Abigail, a single mother of two who meets a man named Ben at a bar. They jokingly come up with a list of things to do before their imagined breakup, knowingly full well they’ll never even start a relationship. But when the joke turns in to a one-night stand that brings a pregnancy, things gets a whole lot more complicated. Co-starring Hamish Linklater, with Lindsey Broad, Mia Sinclair Jenness, Brady Jenness, Katia Winter, Jon Abrahams, and Scott Adsit. This looks charming, right? Official...

It wasn’t wise to borrow money from local mobster Tony Davolio (Chazz Palminteri), but brothers Mickey (Jon Abrahams) and Jackie (Mark Webber) didn’t have a choice. Running a bar isn’t easy these days and the added pressure of trying to keep one afloat after generations of family ownership forces their hands to make a deal with the Devil. After a shared history allows for a single extension on payment without increasing the vig, Jackie decides to gamble what they owe (recouped in full) the night before their deadline in hopes of easy profit. As Mickey (and many others) soon explains, however, thinking has never been that sibling’s strong suit. So how do we meet these two? Escorted empty-handed to Tony’s lair, their fate all but sealed.

The Chess Records story, take two.
Alessandro Nivola (standing) and David Oyelowo in "Who Do You Love"
Photo: Alexander/ Mitchell Productions
It's questionable whether Chess Records, the great rhythm & blues label of the 1950s, required two movies to (sort of) tell its story. Nevertheless, less than two years after the so-so "Cadillac Records," here comes "Who Do You Love," which is so-so in different ways.
The story is essentially the same in outline: how two scrappy Polish Jews, the brothers Leonard and Phil Chess, parlayed their family junkyard business into an R&B nightclub on Chicago's South Side, and then into an independent record label, which in 1950 they dubbed Chess. "Who Do You Love" is better on this part of the famous tale than "Cadillac Records" managed to be, thanks mainly to a clenched, forceful performance by Alessandro Nivola, who plays Leonard Chess as the overbearing hardass he quite likely was.

Roguish 37-year-old actor Alessandro Nivola may not be a household name yet, perhaps because he gets so lost in the diverse roles he's claimed, whether he's the blithe English businessman wooed by Audrey Tautou in "Coco Before Chanel," the paleontology protégé who redeems his thieving ways in "Jurassic Park III," the metropolitan husband who can't lose his Southern roots in "Junebug," or the only actor to ever out-nutty Nicolas Cage as the schizophrenic brother in "Face/Off."
In director Jerry Zaks's new biopic "Who Do You Love," Nivola steps into the shoes of legendary Chicago record producer Leonard Chess, whose Chess Records (co-run with brother Phil, here played by Jon Abrahams) launched the careers of countless blues and early rock 'n' roll pioneers in the '50s and '60s, including Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry. The film was directed by award-winning Broadway and feature film director, Jerry Zaks (“Marvin’S Room,” Broadway’s “Guys And Dolls”). The film opens on Friday, April 9th in New York City with a tiered expansion. Leonard Chess (Alessandro Nivola) changed the face of modern music, and he did so without playing a note. An immigrant living in Chicago just as the city was exploding with new blues sounds, he heard what few others did at the time: the universal passion in the music of performers like Etta James, Muddy Waters...

Alessandro Nivola, David Oyelowo and Jon Abrahams will sail the musical waters together in the feature biopic Chess. Jerry Zaks is directing.
The story chronicles the life of Leonard Chess (Nivola), a self-made music impresario and renowned record company executive who brought blues into the public eye and jump-started the careers of some of the music industry's biggest names, including Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry.
Oyelowo will play Waters, while Abrahams will play Phil Chess, Leonard's younger brother who worries when Leonard becomes involved with a singer who has been signed to their label.
The film will compete against Sony BMG Film's Cadillac Records, which also centers on the rise and fall of Chess' blues label Chess Records. That film stars Adrien Body and Jeffrey Wright and is set to begin production in March.
The script for Chess was penned by Peter Wortmann and Bob Conte and is being produced by Jonathan Mitchell, Les Alexander and Andrea Baynes through Checkmate Prods.

The Wayans brothers -- Keenen Ivory, Marlon and Shawn -- are making their first foray into cable series with "The Life and Times of Marcus 'Felony' Brown," a scripted comedy for VH1.
The cable network has ordered a pilot for the half-hour, single-camera project, an edgy urban comedy VH1 is producing with Wayans Bros. Prods.
Marlon and Shawn Wayans developed "Felony" with Rick Alvarez, their longtime producing partner at Wayans Bros. The three are executive producing the show with Keenen Ivory Wayans and Modus Entertainment's Lisa Suzanne Blum, who manages the brothers.
"Felony" centers on a up-and-coming hard-core East Coast rapper (Darius McCrary) who, after his debut album goes platinum, is forced to relocate to Los Angeles to record his follow-up. Along for the ride are his self-hyping hype man, E-Z (Vince Green); jet-setting manager, Cash (Jon Abrahams); and hard-partying bodyguard, Tiny (Marcello Thedford). Affion Crockett plays Seville, Marcus' personal barber, while Toni Trucks is Tia, Marcus' assistant.

The makers of House of Wax display momentary flashes of imagination, but the film is mostly a routine slasher flick aimed at the youth market. Its title leads you to anticipate a remake of the 1953 Andre de Toth 3-D horror classic about corpses turned into wax figures, which was itself a remake of Michael Curtiz's neglected 1933 two-strip Technicolor masterwork, The Mystery of the Wax Museum. However, writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes and debuting feature director Jaume Collet-Serra toss out this source material in favor of a story more akin to an extended Twilight Zone episode, where college kids with a poor sense of self-preservation stumble upon a forgotten ghost town in the backwoods of Louisiana.
Filmed at the Warner Roadshow Studios in Queensland, Australia, and delayed from its 2004 release, the film should do brisk though brief business in markets catering to young people and college students. "Wax" has the added marquee "bonus" of Paris Hilton playing one of the careless youths.
The story is pure formula: Six young people hit the road for a weekend getaway to a big college football game only to get stranded in a forest at nightfall. Tensions already inflict the group: Carly (Elisha Cuthbert) is distressed that her twin brother, Nick Chad Michael Murray), a punk with an urge for trouble, came along as is her boyfriend, Wade (Jared Padalecki). Paige (Hilton) and boyfriend Blake (Robert Ri'chard) mostly want to sneak away for sexual interludes, while Nick's sad sack buddy Dalton (Jon Abrahams) annoys everyone by shooting all activities with his video camera.
A late-night confrontation with a mysterious trucker, followed by the apparent tampering with one of their vehicles, causes the group to split up. Everyone heads for the game except Carly and Wade, who hitch a ride to a nearby town in search of a fan belt with a clearly unstable character right out of Deliverance.
When they get to this town that isn't on any map, despite all the warning signs, the couple poke and pry where they shouldn't. Especially intriguing to them is a House of Wax where the figures are so "lifelike." Hmmm. Actually, this House of Wax takes its name literally -- everything including the house itself is made of wax. You don't ask how in the world this building was constructed.
Through unconvincing contrivances, the six young people try half-heartedly to regroup, only to keep winding up in pairs or alone so they make easy targets for introduction into the House of Wax. It soon becomes clear that all the town's people are made of wax save for demented twin brothers who run the whole show.
Everything comes down to a battle between the bad twins, Bo and Vincent (both played by Brian Van Holt), and good, Carly and Nick. What on Earth are the writers, who are twins too, trying to say about twins?
If a horror film contains any sequence that combines the grotesque with the surreal, then the film has done its job. House of Wax has two such sequences. The first graphically details the process of embalming a still-living body in wax -- the knife wounds and repairs, the trussing and securing of the body and the spraying of hot wax on an incapacitated person unable to scream. The second comes when a well-meaning friend discovers his buddy's waxed body and understandably tries to claw away the wax coating. Only by doing so, he is actually removing epidermis to expose blood, tissues and muscle.
Otherwise, characters are rote and unremarkable, plot devices predictable and the camera cheats by sticking close to actors so a viewer cannot see from where the next shock will come.
Acting is similarly routine with the glorious exception of Hilton, who is so bad she steals the show. Indeed, the best moment in the film occurs when the filmmakers make it clear that the true horror experienced by Hilton's character is when she finds herself without a working cell phone.
