What's in a roar? Well, if it belongs to a ginormous prehistoric reptilian monster like Godzilla, it matters as much as what the creature represents or makes us feel. Godzilla's roar has evolved over the years — the original sound resembled a shrill "Skreeeonk!" as described in Dark Horse's "Godzilla" comics, and went on to alternate between deep, guttural sounds and high-pitched screeches that feel otherworldly. Akira Ifukube, who created the score for Ishirō Honda's "Godzilla", was the one who crafted the monster's distinctive disyllabic roar. This was not an easy task to accomplish, especially in 1954, when most creature sounds were created organically with minimal reliance on technological tweaks. How did Ifukube and Honda decide on a sound that would go on to constitute the heart and soul of such a beloved character?
For starters, Ifukube did not believe that Godzilla should roar at all, as the creature's reptilian...

The original 1954 "Godzilla" film may look a bit worn 70 years after its release, but one aspect of the movie is still capable of reaching across time and space to rattle the nerves of modern moviegoers: that famous kaiju roar. Ishirō Honda's groundbreaking film brought its eponymous creature to life with a screeching, discordant sound that sends tingles down the spine, and it's a noise that the latest Toho Studios masterpiece, the critically acclaimed "Godzilla Minus One," aimed to emulate and expand upon.
In an interview with A Frame, the sound team behind the Oscar-winning film explained exactly how they put together the new Godzilla roar, a stunning noise that punctuated the film's first trailer and sounds even better in context. According to writer-director Takashi Yamazaki, he and the sound team decided to create the latest roar in part by replaying the original audio in a space that would allow for major echoes and reverberations.

The films vying for the 2024 Best Sound Oscar are “The Creator,” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Oppenheimer,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (31/10) will prevail, followed in order of likelihood by “The Zone of Interest” (37/10), “Maestro” (9/2), “Mission: Impossible” (9/2), and “The Creator” (9/2).
This year’s Best Sound award will be the fourth handed out since the former Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories were consolidated ahead of the 93rd Oscars. The 17 craftspeople involved in this race have collectively amassed 70 previous nominations and 16 wins for their audio work, with the largest share of those bids (30%) belonging to Kevin O’Connell (“Oppenheimer”). With an Oscars resume dating back to 1984, he stands as one of this lineup’s nine returning champions, having memorably broken his unprecedented losing streak on his 21st bid for “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017).

When Godzilla gets mad, he yells at stuff. Dude loves to roar. When he's not stomping on cities, smashing King Ghidorah in the face(s), or hibernating in the Pacific, everyone's favorite nuclear gorilla-whale is sounding his barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world. The accepted spelling of Godzilla's roar is "Skreeonk," a word often seen in Godzilla comics. Since the monster's inception in 1954, Godzilla has more or less retained the same roar, with the sound only undergoing remixes and aural sweetening as sound technology evolved. The Godzilla roar from 2023's "Godzilla Minus One" is not terribly far afield from the Godzilla roar heard in Ishiro Honda's "Gojira." Enterprising Godzilla fans have compiled the various Godzilla roars into tidy video montages. It's a high-pitched wail undergirded by an animalistic growl. It is distinctly Godzilla.

You get the feeling from talking to four of the Oscar-nominated members from the sound team of the sci-fi action thriller “The Creator” – supervising sound editor/sound designers Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn, sound mixer Ian Voigt and rerecording mixer Tom Ozanich – that they have never been through anything quite like the adventure they just experienced providing the sonics for this feature. It was shot on location in many countries throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Nepal, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos, the director Gareth Edwards eschewing backlot and green screen while recreating the vibe of a small indie production. “We shot it guerilla style, but then fuse all of this technology into what looks and sounds like a $300 million movie but isn’t,” stresses Aadahl.

Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was a resourceful sci-fi endeavor with an $80 million production budget, but its visuals are on par with epic blockbusters that cost three times that amount. Rather than shoot on a studio backlot, the filmmaker behind “Godzilla” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opted to shoot in eight different countries, including Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Japan.

“There was nothing temped in, it was just production dialogue and nothing else,” Aadahl explained. “It was an amazing blank canvas to start working with. There were no visual effects, just a title that said ‘Tank on the Hill.

Director, Producer, and Co-Writer (with Chris Weitz) Gareth Edwards has been working on his idea for an original science fiction tale involving human interaction with advanced AI child for many years. Now that The Creator is finally reaching the screen I would say it is more like science fact, or at least a plausible facsimile. With recent warnings from Silcon Valley leaders about imminent dangers with the alarming speed of AI progress, and all the talk (especially with the guild strikes) about the threat of AI technology invading and possibly even shifting out of our control in frightening ways, Edwards has cooked up a hell of a story in which AI just might be the good guys – or robots as it were – in a world where humans could be losing the upper hand.

"The Creator," the new sci-fi film from director Gareth Edwards, explores a near future where AI and humans are at war. As you can see from the film's trailer, a nuclear bomb has destroyed Los Angeles, which results in the U.S. going to war with its non-human opponents. However, New Asia (a conglomeration of Asian countries) has embraced AI, putting the two sides at odds with one another. When an advanced form of AI is put into the body of a child (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), ex-special forces agent Joshua (John David Washington) ends up taking the little girl on the run from the U.S., which has come up with a massive military spaceship called Nomad that can take out targets as small as an individual being from the sky.
/Film's own Vanessa Armstrong recently spoke to Edwards about the film, including the process behind the creation of Nomad.

“It’s so fun to make a film with John, he’s such a film buff,” confides “A Quiet Place Part II” visual effects supervisor Scott Farrar. The John in question is of course writer and director John Krasinski, who Farrar says created “a much more active film” than the first go around. The pair discussed classic movies like “Jaws,” the work of Alfred Hitchcock, and even silent films as their guide posts for the feelings the sequence should evoke in audiences. “It was really fun constructing tension and suspense” with these touchstones in mind, according to Farrar. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The prologue which opens the film is a perfect example of the high octane action which puts Farrar’s digital alien creatures front and center. “Everything had to be pretty fast,” he says of animating the monsters’ initial attack on humanity. “They hear, they target, then they move,...

“Sound is in the DNA of this story. Sound is a character. Sound is the danger but also the weapon,” explains supervising sound editor Erik Aadahl of “A Quiet Place Part II.” He and fellow supervising sound editor Ethan Van der Ryn were Oscar-nominated for the first “A Quiet Place” film, and both editors agree that the ambitious sequel pushed them to explore the creative possibilities of sound design even further. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“There’s always pressure on us when we’re working on a sequel,” reveals Van der Ryn. Though he and his sound design partner admit that some of that pressure comes from themselves because they want “to always be growing and exploring.” The sound editor is thankful to writer/director John Krasinkski because “he provided us with a script that allowed us to build on some of the themes that we established in the first movie.

This is the year of musicals and that means sound design and sound mixing is sweet music to one’s ears. From “In the Heights,” to “Tick, Tick … Boom!” and “Dear Evan Hansen,” and the yet-unseen “West Side Story,” sound teams worked finessed audio tracks recorded on set, pre-records and studio-recorded vocals. In addition, sound mixers seamlessly took environmental sounds to match what audiences saw on screen.
Take Vanessa’s entrance in “In the Heights.” Melissa Barrera struts down Washington Heights in black studded heels, which tap to the beat of the song, and her vocals flawlessly match the emotion as she tries to negotiate her down payment with a landlord.

The opening shots of “A Quiet Place – Part II” do not immediately give away that we are witnessing the day the Abbott family was forced into silence by deadly creatures from another world. And that makes it all the more shocking when Lee Abbott’s truck arrives on a seemingly deserted street, the sound of its engine and the slam of its door echoing through the theater with an unnatural, ominous loudness.
It is the first of countless sounds developed by the film’s sound team, led by Ethan Van Der Ryn and Erik Aadahl, who earned acclaim with the original 2018 film for turning even the simplest of sounds – crows flying or a glass bottle breaking – into potential triggers for another heart-pounding alien attack.

John Krasinski is returning to direct the untitled sequel to Paramount’s horror hit “A Quiet Place.”
Krasinski revealed the news Friday via an Instagram post that said “…time to go back. #PartII 5-15-20”; the post showed the red lights that became synonymous with the alien threats in the first movie.
“A Quiet Place” starred Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Noah Jupe, and Millicent Simmonds and grossed $340 million at the global box office last year. Since then, the film has won several awards, including the Screen Actors Guild Award for Blunt in the supporting actress category.
Krasinski also wrote the screenplay with Bryan Woods and Scott Beck, and the trio received a Writers Guild nomination in the original category. “A Quiet Place” is also up for an Academy Award for sound editing for Ethan Van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl.

Exclusive: Sources says John Krasinski is back to direct Quiet Place 2. He was already on board to write the sequel.
Production we hear begins in July on the Brad Fuller and Andrew Form produced film.
We also hear that Emily Blunt’s deal for the sequel is closed as well. She recently won a Screen Actors Guild best supporting actress award for her turn in the film. Today on Instagram Krasinski announced the sequel’s release date: May 15, 2020.
The $17M production made its world premiere at SXSW a year ago, where it promptly sent electricity into the audience. The pic was expected to open around $30M, and over-performed its domestic tracking with a $50.2M opening, and final stateside of $188M, $340M Ww. With Paramount struggling before Jim Gianopulos’ arrival to the studio, A Quiet Place came as a wonderful renaissance for them. Gianopulos announced the sequel to the alien thriller last spring at CinemaCon.

What if living in silence was your only means of survival? That’s the question supervising sound editors Ethan Van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl had to answer in the hair-raising thriller “A Quiet Place” from co-writer-director John Krasinski, who also starred alongside wife Emily Blunt as the on-screen couple Lee and Evelyn Abbott.
The allegory depicts a post-apocalyptic universe in which bloodthirsty creatures hunt through sound, attacking anything with an acoustic resonance.
To immerse viewers in the macabre the aural connection between sound and death needed to be defined and articulated.
Having met in pre-production with Krasinski, who himself admits he knew “sound was going to be a character, if not the main character above all else,” the supervising sound editors created the logic behind what sound levels were dangerous and what levels were below the threshold.
“It’s just as hard if not harder to make a world...

Can “A Quiet Place” become a rare horror film to compete for Best Picture at the Oscars? The box office sleeper hit about a family forced to live in silence to hide from monsters with super-sensitive hearing has earned nominations at the PGA, WGA, SAG, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards, so it’s frighteningly possible. Gold Derby recently spoke with director, star, and co-writer John Krasinski; actress Emily Blunt; screenwriters Bryan Woods and Scott Beck; producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form; cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen; and supervising sound editors Ethan Van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl about their work.

‘A Quiet Place’ sound editors Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn on ‘sound being a central character’
John Krasinski labelled his sound designers on “A Quiet Place,” Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn, as “sound magicians” in my recent interview with the actor-director. In turn, they’re full of compliments for him: “He has an amazing ear,” says Aadahl. “He can pick out the tiniest little details hidden in the track, which was wonderful for us because it really gave us the license to dig in and take it as far as we could with a filmmaker who had our backs. He was always in the trenches with us.”
As a team, Aadahl and Van der Ryn have been nominated for the Best Sound Editing Oscar twice: once in 2012 for “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and again the year after for Best Picture winner “Argo,” another film helmed by an actor-turned-director (Ben Affleck).

Supervising sound editor Ethan Van der Ryn describes “A Quiet Place” as the “toughest sound design job we’ve ever tackled, because sound is so critical in every single scene.” Directed by John Krasinski, this Paramount release imagines a post-apocalyptic world in which a family (led by Krasinski and Emily Blunt) must live in silence to hide from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing. Watch our exclusive video interview with Van der Ryn and fellow supervising sound editor Erik Aadahl above.

“Sound is really the central driver of the narrative,” explains Van der Ryn. The movie establishes “this world where making too much sound can get you killed.” So in their work the duo had to explore “all different layers and degrees of quiet.” He adds, “It’s really a film that’s full of sound.

John Krasinski is well on his way to making the sequel to “A Quiet Place.”
“I’m writing it now,” Krasinski told Variety Sunday at the 10th annual Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards. “I’ve mapped out an idea and hopefully it’s good enough to shoot … Paramount’s been unbelievably supportive and I’m just excited to have a second one and so we’ll see how it goes.”
Krasinski was on hand to present to his sound editors Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn. “Sound was everything to our movie,” Krasinski said. “I couldn’t have made this movie without them. Any sort of attention I get from the movie I owe to them. So I’m happy to be here for them.”
Presented by Los Angeles Confidential magazine and held this year at Exchange La, the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards recognize talent behind the scenes.

“We had just had our second daughter — she was 3 weeks old when I read the script, A Quiet Place director-writer-star John Krasinski said Saturday during a panel at Deadline’s annual The Contenders awards-season event. “The idea was perfect. I saw the entire movie within 30 minutes of finishing the script because I was holding my daughter when I was reading the pages.”
“I said if I can actually take this experience of these early days of parenthood, which is pure terror, pure nerves–you’re not even a real person– and put that a movie and make this the best metaphor for parenting that I’ve ever encountered, that was my goal.”
Krasinski was joined on the panel by his co-star Millicent Simmonds, producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, and sound editors Ethan Van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl, who described the experience on the film as a “sound designers dream.
