True Detective has to be one of the most brilliant anthology mystery thriller shows ever made. Originally created by Nic Pizzolatto, the HBO series told a dark and haunting tale through the brilliant performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in its first season. The quality of the series took a nosedive in its second season and the third season while better from Season 2 didn’t really match the expectation that the inaugural season of True Detective set. Now, we are in Season 4 titled Night Country and with a new creative force behind the series, the fans are getting exactly what they want. So, if you have already finished the much awaited Season 4 of True Detective and are hoping for a renewal, here are some similar shows you could watch while waiting for the new season.

It’s truly a measure of the pandemic that the 19th annual Ves Awards (to be held virtually on April 6) was dominated by Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” with 13 nominations (topped by photoreal episode). Like the Oscar shortlist, there was an absence of big budget, VFX-intensive studio films. But, truth be told, Season 2 of Jon Favreau’s engaging “Star Wars” bounty hunter series offered the industry’s most innovative tech (wrapped around Industrial Light & Magic’s improved StageCraft virtual production system).
Pixar’s “Soul” was the top animation contender with five nominations, while the feature competition was split between “Project Power,” the Netflix superhero film, Robert Zemeckis’ “The Witches” (which streamed on HBO Max), and Disney’s live-action “Mulan” (which streamed on Disney+), each garnering three nominations.

The Handmaid’s Tale star on doing her own stunts in The Invisible Man, the symbolic power of Offred’s cape – and working with a demanding dog
Elisabeth Moss, 37, has been nicknamed “the Queen of Peak TV” for her award-winning roles in several of the 21st century’s most acclaimed dramas. She played the president’s daughter Zoey Bartlet in The West Wing, secretary turned copywriter Peggy Olson in Mad Men and detective Robin Griffin in Top of the Lake. She currently plays June “Offred” Osborne in The Handmaid’s Tale, which she also co-produces. She stars in the new film version of Hg Wells’s The Invisible Man.
The Invisible Man seems a bit of a departure for you. What attracted you to the role?
I’ve always loved horror films and secretly wanted to be that girl running around screaming. This role not only offered that but was an interesting character piece with deeper resonances.

Now that Us is in theaters, we're officially terrified of any noises, shadows, music, and, quite frankly, family members. While we spend the next few nights trying to unravel Jordan Peele's ending, we are also spending a good deal of time marveling at how this all-star cast created one of the scariest films we've seen this decade.
We're sure you recognize Elisabeth Moss from her starring role in Hulu's adaptation of The Handmaid's Tale and AMC's late, great Mad Men, but Moss has been showcasing her acting abilities since the '90s. She landed her first TV credit playing Robin in the 1990 TV movie Bar Girls. After that, she lent her vocal talents to animated TV series like Animaniacs, Batman: The Animated Series, and Freakazoid!. One of her first major film roles came when she played Harvey Keitel's daughter in the 1994 film Imaginary Crimes, but you...

On Liar, Joanne Froggatt (of Downton Abbey fame) plays school teacher Laura Nielson, who accuses a handsome widowed doctor (Ioan Gruffudd) of drugging and raping her. The two go out for dinner, where they hit it off, before heading back to Laura’s apartment. Once inside, they flirt over a couple glasses of wine before Laura wakes up alone in bed the next morning, with the sick feeling that she’s been sexually assaulted.
The British miniseries airing on SundanceTV isn’t so much a show about rape, but rather, what happens when someone reports a rape. What unfolds over the six episodes (which will draw to a “satisfying conclusion,” Froggatt tells Et) is scrutiny of Laura’s past as well as the night of the incident, a decision to go public that polarizes friends and family as the show’s anti-heroine becomes more and more unstable.

Every year, the new fall TV lineup not only features established performers, but new talent on the verge of being truly embraced by the mainstream.
IndieWire has identified 17 of those relatively fresh faces poised to break out from this year’s crop of freshman comedies and dramas. Not everyone on lists like these goes onto blockbuster success, but one of the most exciting things about new shows is discovering emerging talent — and what they’re capable of. In past years, we’ve seen new stars emerge on shows across the spectrum of platforms, and in 2017 we have our theories who might end up being the stand-out performers for this season.
Important note: Because this list is humans-only, we tragically omitted giant teleporting puppy Lockjaw, from “Marvel’s Inhumans.” As soon as we have the time to celebrate all the great CGI characters currently on television, Lockjaw’s a lock.

Goodbye, Summer TV; hello, what was once the prime TV season for new shows and is now just a Peak TV free-for-all. Broad City The Good Place are, thankfully, back; meanwhile, HBO goes all in on a drama about the Seventies porn renaissance, Ahs takes on the 2016 election and a new Star Trek boldly goes where several of its predecessors have gone before. Here’s what you need to tune in to this month.

Summer TV might not be the endless field of tumbleweeds the landscape used to be a few years ago. But there’s still something about fall approaching that signals a revitalized TV world, filled with plenty of new shows and returning favorites.
We’ll have more soon on the best of what’s to come among the fall’s returning shows, but here’s a helpful overview of the new series that might be worth adding to the queue.
“American Horror Story: Cult” (September 5, FX)
This newest installment of the long-running FX anthology series may not be a new show, but it’s dealing with some new subject matter. In an election-inspired season of new horrors, standbys Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters, alongside newcomers Alison Pill and Billy Eichner, tackle the dangers of a hivemind. Elisabeth Moss will be a top contender at this year’s Emmys, and deservedly so, for her work in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. And she might as well make plans for a return trip next year, too, based on her knockout performance in Sundance’s gritty, mesmerizing crime drama Top of the Lake: China Girl.
A sequel to 2013’s Top of the Lake, China Girl — a six-hour Australian miniseries premiering Sunday, Sept. 10 at 9/8c and airing over three consecutive nights — finds Moss’ police detective Robin Griffin back in Sydney, still guarded and on edge after the traumatic events of last season.

Sex and violence are never far away from each other in Top Of The Lake: China Girl. That’s hardly surprising for a murder mystery set in the world of the sex trade, but the two aren’t only connected by Cinnamon’s story.

It’d have been hard to guess, going into Cannes, that by far the most entertaining of my Croisette interviews would be with Jane Campion, and her Top of the Lake: China Girl cast. After all, the first season of Top of the Lake was dark, following Elisabeth Moss’s Robin Griffin, a tortured detective investigating the pregnancy and disappearance of a 12-year-old girl. Opening with sirens, a chase, gunshots, a woman and her child being kidnapped… The Handmaid’s Tale gets our attention as a thriller, but does its real damage as a horror - not just an intellectual what-an-existential-nightmare horror, but also the look-out-you’re-in-danger kind.
In this adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel, director Reed Morano makes the nation of Gilead—the radically oppressive social experiment that’s replaced modern-day America—every bit as threatening as a haunted house or serial killer’s lair. Four years after lauded New Zealand noir mini-series “Top of the Lake,” Jane Campion, who was cheered at the Cannes 70th anniversary celebration as the only woman director to win the Palme d’Or (1994 Oscar-winner “The Piano”), is back in the festival with “Top of the Lake: China Girl.” She and returning co-writer Gerard Lee debuted all six SundanceTV episodes on May 23rd to raves.

Jane Campion’s “Top of the Lake: China Girl” is — among a seemingly infinite array of other things — a story about second chances. And while that theme is beautifully personified by any number of different characters during this six-hour miniseries, there’s a certain irony to the fact that this epic detective drama is built upon a foundation of redemption and regret. After all, Campion got it right the first time.
Premiering at Sundance in 2013 and airing on SundanceTV later that year, “Top of the Lake” was notable for being one of the first examples of a major filmmaker realizing the full potential of the “peak TV” era. It was also notable for being a staggering piece of long-form fiction, the Palme d’Or-winning director of “The Piano” returning to her native land of New Zealand for a violently beautiful mystery show that flipped the genre on its ass with savage grace.

Season 2 of Sundance’s Top of the Lake is set at the shore, but as these new photos released Monday can attest,it’s by no means the TV equivalent of a summer beach read.
The return of the Australian Jane Campion crime drama finds police detective Robin Griffin (Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss) coming back to her job after the traumatic events of Season 1. Her first case back involves a dead Asian girl whose body, encased in some luggage, washes up on the beach. As she and colleague Miranda Hilmarson (Game of Thrones‘ Gwendoline Christie) investigate, they wind up at a disturbing brothel.

She’s been a blond vamp, an American princess and a thorn in Lars Von Trier’s side. But 2017 looks set to be Nicole Kidman’s greatest Cannes yet
The official social media hashtags for this year’s Cannes film festival are #Cannes2017 and #Cannes70. But maybe it should be #Nicolefest and #Nicolepalooza. Because Nicole Kidman is set to dominate, with no fewer than four entries in the official selection. In all her sculpted blond tallness, looming over most of the grinning menfolk on the red carpet, she is going to be a Cannes fixture.
Kidman is in season two of Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake, which Cannes is showcasing as part of its new policy of admitting top-of-the-range TV series. She plays an Australian mother, Julia, whose story dovetails with that of Detective Robin Griffin, played by Elisabeth Moss. In John Cameron Mitchell’s How to Talk to Girls at Parties,...

Many top film directors have moved over to the world of television, but one of the most successful, seamless transitions has been for Jane Campion, whose Top of the Lake a few years back was a gorgeously-shot, unsettlingly intense crime drama. She’s now back this year, returning to Cannes to premiere the second season of series, which once again stars Elisabeth Moss.
The first trailer has now arrived for Top of the Lake: China Girl, which also reveals Nicole Kidman (who is bringing three other projects to Cannes), and shows the story of the hunt for a killer when the body of a girl washes up on a Sydney beach. Check out the trailer below (via Indiewire) for the six-part series also starring Gwendoline Christie, David Dencik, Alice Englert and Ewen Leslie.

It’s been four years since we last saw Elisabeth Moss’ Detective Robin Griffin, and it looks like quite a bit has changed. New faces and a new case dominate the first trailer for “Top of the Lake: China Girl,” Jane Campion’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed limited series.
Moss returns as Griffin, a mother still reeling from giving up her daughter at birth, and in a disconcerting twist, Nicole Kidman plays Mary’s adoptive mother. Why does that connection spell trouble? It looks like Griffin’s gruesome new assignment links back to Mary’s new boyfriend — which doesn’t bode well for anyone, especially when he’s confidant enough to say things like, “The destiny of man is to enslave women.”
