- Daniel Schmid was born on December 26, 1941 in Flims-Waldhaus, Graubünden, Switzerland. He was a director and writer, known for Tosca's Kiss (1984), Jenatsch (1987) and Shadow of Angels (1976). He died on August 5, 2006 in Flims Waldhaus, Graubünden, Switzerland.

- He received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 52nd Locarno International Film Festival in 1999. The 2006 festival was taking place at the time of his death, and as a tribute Tosca's Kiss (1984), his documentary about a retirement home for opera singers, was shown.
- He studied at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin. He began directing TV films in 1970, and made his first feature film in 1971, entitled "Tonight or Never". It is about masters and servants in a castle who change places once a year. He also directed several operas in Geneva and Zurich.
