- Father of director Jonathan Kaplan.
- Child prodigy on the piano, performing at Carnegie Hall by the age of 21. During World War II, wrote music for the Army Signal Corps and the OSS (precursor of the CIA) film units. First solo feature motion picture work "Tales of Manhattan" (1942), then at Eagle-Lion (1948), then 20th Century Fox. Work interrupted by HUAC blacklisting in 1953. Wrote incidental music for the theatre (both on and off Broadway), 1955-1961. Best remembered for his symphonic scoring of two classic Star Trek episodes, "The Doomsday Machine" and "The Enemy Within".
