Steve Martin brings down the house with this adoring, hilarious pastiche of mad doctor and disembodied brain motifs — surely the epitome of cultured comedy. Under Carl Reiner’s direction Martin is marvelous, and he’s aided and abetted by the daring sexpot-turned comedienne Kathleen Turner — who has a better handle on outrageous sexy comedy than they do. It’s class-act nonsense and inspired silliness. Where else can a crazed surgeon proclaim his special screw-top skull surgery method, and utter the immortal words, “Scum queen?!”

Inspired by James Cameron's The Abyss, the late 80s brought with it a wave of brilliantly cheesy undersea horrors, Ryan writes...
Hollywood studios occasionally have an uncanny knack of announcing almost identical film projects at the same time. In the 1980s, we had rival police dog movies K-9 and Turner And Hooch. The 90s saw the release of rival eruption movies (Dante's Peak and Volcano), opposing killer space rock pictures (Deep Impact and Armageddon) and duelling insect comedies (Antz and A Bug's Life). We provided a detailed run-down on these rival movies back in 2015.
See related Vikings renewed for season 5
Around the year 1989, meanwhile, film producers briefly fell in love with a curiously specific genre: undersea sci-fi horror. Between January 1989 and the spring of 1990, no fewer than five films all came out with a similar theme - DeepStar Six was first, followed by Leviathan, Lords Of The Deep,...

After a strong start, 10 seasons and multiple spin-offs took Stargate Sg-1 further and further away from its original premise...
I’ve recently had time to catch-up on the staple of afternoon television when I was a lad, Stargate Sg-1. First launched in 1997, it ran for ten seasons and it’s aged surprisingly well, in no small part due to it being heavily character-driven and fairly horror-focussed for its first two runs. This is most likely thanks to its first five seasons airing on sex-and-guts cable channel Showtime, while its later seasons aired the more clean-cut Syfy channel in the Us. All in all, it’s rip-roaring sci-fi; the kind of ‘explore and fight with interesting plots and great character arcs’ storytelling that filled the void left by successive Star Trek series which never quite captured the wonder of the unknown in the way that the Original Series or The Next Generation did.

Universal has signed a new two-year deal with writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and their K/O Paper Products production company. The first two films out the gate will be reboots of Universal properties The Mummy and Van Helsing. Their writing credits include two Transformers movies and the Star Trek reboot as well as the much maligned Cowboys & Aliens. On the TV side, they created the underrated Fringe and produce the Hawaii Five-0 reboot.

Joel Goldsmith, the famed composer behind both "Star Trek" and "Stargate," passed away Saturday after a long battle with cancer, Variety reports. He was 54.
Though he got his start scoring sci-fi and horror films ("Laserblast," "The Man With Two Brains"), the son of Oscar-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith found his true calling in television. He went on to score over 350 episodes of various "Stargate" series and contributed over 20 minutes of music to "Star Trek: First Contact," which was scored by his father. He had recently turned to video games, contributing music to "Call of Duty 3."
Fellow composer Neal Acree, who worked with Goldsmith on "Stargate" released a statement on his friend's passing: I’m utterly heartbroken at the loss of my dear friend and mentor Joel Goldsmith. He was like a second father to me and I feel like I owe much of my career to the opportunities he gave me...

Shooting fantasy fight scene with @mradamscott. twitpic.com/9fnums
— Ben Stiller (@RedHourBen) April 30, 2012
Before you put yourself on red alert and begin tweeting your friends, Ben Stiller and Adam Scott aren't actually fighting. The duo is filming a fight scene for their dramady, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty."
The adventure film follows Mitty (Stiller), a lonely magazine photo manager who lives life through daydreams while he looks through other people's pictures. But when a negative goes missing, he leaves his fantasy world and heads off on his own journey. The film also stars Sean Penn, Kristen Wiig and rising comedian Patton Oswalt. While details of Scott's role are unreleased, we expect lots of snarky lines from the "Parks and Recreation" actor.
Also in April 30, 2012's Twitter-Wood, "Think Like a Man" stars react to its #1 spot at this weekend's box office, Daniel Dae Kim tweets an on-set photo of the...

The music world has lost another great television and movie composer. Joel Goldsmith, whose music appeared in more than 350 episodes of Stargate across three franchises, has died. He was 54. No cause of death has been released, but the news was announced early Monday morning by Stargate news site GateWorld. Goldsmith was the son of famed Star Trek composer Jerry Goldsmith, who himself died in 2004 at the age of 75. His first job came in 1978 for the pseudo-documentary "Auditions" in 1978 and later the Michael Rae B-movie sci-fi film "Laserblast." His work became more mainstream in 1991 with the short-lived sci-fi television series "Super Force." He would make his own name for himself in 1993 when he signed on to compose music for the syndicated series "The Untouchables" that starred ...

A frakload of updates today. Let's start in Caprica City.
If you find yourself in Vancouver on Saturday, July 23, you can meet up with fellow BSG & Caprica fans for a guided tour of Kobol. For details, go to The 13th Colony blog.
CNN has a really great article about Ron Moore this week which is mainly about 17th Precinct, but pretty much covers most of his career. Here are a couple of quotes from David Eick and Jane Espenson:
"Ron is the scariest writer I know" his former producing partner recalls.
"I'm not sure there's anything he can't do remarkably well. Even within the context of 'Battlestar,' there was such a wild panoply of styles and emotions -- action, tragedy, melodrama, comedy, philosophy, even music -- all of which I watched him nail."
"But he's also weirdly unpretentious," Eick said. "We'd argue about whether something worked, but never...
