Along with The Mist and Dreamcatcher, Cycle of the Werewolf was one of my first introductions to Stephen King, so the Master of Horror's powerfully poignant prose in that novella—combined with the legendary Bernie Wrightson's amazing illustrations—will forever hold a special place in my horror-loving heart, and so too does its film adaptation: Dan Attias' Silver Bullet (which really captures the blood-soaked slice of small-town life in Tarker's Mills).
It's especially thrilling, then, that Scream Factory will be unleashing their Collector's Edition of Silver Bullet on 4K Uhd and Blu-ray just in time for the holiday season, and we have a look at the full list of bonus features fans can look forward to, including a new audio commentary with Eric Vespe and Scott Wampler of The Kingcast!

Frank Zito (a career performance by writer/executive producer Joe Spinell of Rocky and The Godfather fame) is a deeply disturbed man, haunted by the traumas of unspeakable childhood abuse. And when these horrific memories begin to scream inside his mind, Frank prowls the seedy streets of N ew York City to stalk and slaughter innocent young women. Now Frank has begun a relationship with a beautiful photographer (Caroline Munro of The Spy Who Loved Me), yet his vile compulsions remain. These are the atrocities of a human monster. This is the story of a Maniac. Directed by William Lustig (Maniac Cop 2, Vigilante) and featuring landmark gore effects by Tom Savini (Dawn Of The Dead, Friday The 13th), this relentlessly shocking and disturbing film was originally banned or censored all over the world due to its graphic violence. Blue Underground let us know about a release date move for their upcoming Blu-ray release of Maniac, but it's for good reason. Previously scheduled for release in November, the new date is December 11th, which is giving Blue Underground extra time to upgrade the bonus features disc from the originally planned DVD format to a Blu-ray.

Okay, serious question: Should we call William Shatner a legend? An icon? Or just think of him as an actor, writer, director and producer whose connection to the "Star Trek" franchise will make sure that he's remembered for generations yet to come? As a composer, I'm quick to acknowledge the role of music in setting the tone for a horror film, and while theme songs with lyrics and vocals can be just as effective as an instrumental score, there are definitely risks involved: along with clothing and hairstyles, songs tend to anchor a film to the year it was made, and as tastes change, a pop tune can be exposed as a quaint and silly relic of its decade. Then again, some of those tracks were pretty goofy to begin with, and nothing could have saved them. With that said, I love every one of these oddball themes to death (even the truly painful ones), so I'd like to share with you the best of the weirdest, straight from one of my more... uh, let's say “eccentric” party playlists. Let's rock! Fat Boys: “Are You Ready for Freddy?” (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master,...

There’s no denying that music has proven itself to be an integral part of our favorite horror films, to the point that the iconic scores for films like Halloween and Psycho are as important an aspect of the movies as the stories and characters themselves. But we’ve already talked about our favorite horror scores here on Fearnet in the past, so that’s not quite what we’re here to discuss today.
Ya see, many horror movies over the years have been given their very own songs, which have either been featured within the movies or played over their end credits. It’s not something that often happens nowadays, but back in the 80s and 90s, it wasn’t all that uncommon for studios to task musicians with writing and performing original songs for their horror movies. Ah, the good old days.

Soundtrack fatigue hit me a few years ago. The classic scores I listened to were growing far too familiar and the new stuff that was accompanying contemporary films was a bit of a bore (with a few exceptions, of course). So, I took a break from listening to scores when I worked, or cleaned the house, or when I was entertaining guests - more or less the time when I do listen to soundtracks.
Then something happened. For my birthday one year, I was given a copy of Mondo's record for Jay Chattaway's Maniac soundtrack. Mondo made a big deal of it, pressing the score on clear vinyl dyed in blood red. The only problem: I didn't have a record player. Maniac became a cool collectible. Something to place on a shelf and for people to talk about because the sleeve art by Ken Taylor captured the eye (a...

There are great dialogue-free scenes (most of Buffy’s Hush for one) and there are great silent or music-free moments (the credit sequences in Game of Thrones’ The Rains of Castamere and The Walking Dead’s The Killer Inside, most of Buffy’s The Body). But here, we’re celebrating musical moments where the score or soundtrack comes to the fore. The scene may or may not include dialogue, the music may be part of the scene (the technical term for this is diegetic) or part of the score, that is, music that does not exist for the characters but enhances the experience for the viewer (non-diegetic or extra-diegetic). Over a year has passed between the Cannes 2012 premiere of Franck Khalfoun's infamous remake of Maniac and the film's On Demand release this month... such a long stretch, in fact, that I was able to buy the soundtrack album many months before I even got a chance to see the film itself. The whole experience gave me multiple jolts of deja vu... and I'll explain why. You see, back in 1980, when Joe Lustig's original Maniac was being discussed in hushed tones among my friends (we were all too young to see the film in theaters), the soundtrack LP was being carried by Varese Sarabande records, and mail-ordering a copy from the back pages of Fangoria was as close as I could get to experiencing the actual movie. Even the cover art (that iconic image of a grubby, knife-wielding goon clutching a bloody, freshly-scalped fistful of blonde locks) filled me with dread,...

Welcome to the 2011 Holiday Movie Geek Gift Guide! What is this? No, it’s not my personal gift wish list made public in hopes that readers will bury me in their affection — although, I wouldn’t be disgusted if you did — no, this is guide to finding that perfect, special gift for the Movie Geek in your life. You know who I mean. We all have at least one friend who obsesses about movies, someone who spouts a movie quote or a director factoid every other breath. What does one buy a person so firmly entrenched in the culture of movies? I hope this guide helps you with your shopping ideas, but don’t expect to find the typical, no brainer ideas — such as gift cards — on this list.

William Lustig’s late 80’s “horror” film, written by Larry Cohen, is now out on DVD/BluRay courtesy of the fine folks at Synapse Films. The blurb on the Blu-ray case claims Maniac Cop is regarded as a classic of the genre, but is it? I would be hard pressed to even call it a horror movie, but more of an action/thriller/revenge film.
The film concerns itself with Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell) a young police officer with marital troubles who becomes the prime suspect in his wife’s murder. But it gets worse…people have reported seeing a rogue cop attacking and murdering people, and naturally our hero is put on the top of the suspect list for those crimes as well.
Of course, the real solution can’t be this simple, so it’s up to detective Frank McCrae (Tom Atkins) and Forrest’s associate Theresa Mallory...

[1]I type this from the tables right outside the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin Texas as Fantastic Fest 2011 is getting ready to kick off. Of course, it wouldn't be a true to form Alamo event if Mondo didn't get involved and in addition to an Olly Moss American Werewolf in London poster that will be revealed on Saturday, Mondo has a bunch of limited edition posters that will be available for the first time at the fest. They're for Zombie, The Innkeepers and The House by the Cemetery. Plus Mondo is releasing their first record, the score to Maniac by Jay Chattaway. Check out all the images after the jump. Bear McCreary has opened up the market for television soundtracks -- a market once reserved for just movies and musicals. And now "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is joining the game. La-La Land Records -- which produced soundtracks for "Battlestar Galactica," "Caprica" and others -- is releasing a three-disc set for "The Next Generation" in August. It will feature music from Dennis McCarthy, Jay Chattaway, Don Davis, John Debney and Fred Steiner. Only 3,000 copies will be produced initially in a limited set, with some copies going on sale in time for San Diego Comic-Con later this month. It's expected to retail through online outlets beginning at $35. It is not clear which actual pieces and from which episodes will be chosen for this inaugural set, but "The Next Generation" used ...

Are you ready for something new? Are you ready to rock? Then get ready for the first edition of the new weekend movie music video feature I’m calling B-sides. For this premiere installment I’ll be bringing you a musical double feature from two different films with three things in common: part 2’s from 1990 with “cop” in the title.
So what exactly is B-sides all about? Once a week I’ll present to you a music video featuring a song from a motion picture, preferably of the b-movie persuasion. Some will be horror related, others will not, and some will just be horrifying in the sense you cannot believe someone actually recorded such a song. In some cases, as with more high profile soundtracks, the song will be presented in the form of the actual music video that aired on MTV. For more obscure offerings, the video might be...

I was too young to catch the theatrical release of Bill Lustig's brutal low-budget slasher film Maniac in 1980, but I did see the film on VHS in the mid-80s. Watching Blue Underground's all-region 30th Anniversary Maniac Blu-Ray, which hits the streets on October 26th, brought back some ugly memories with high-definition clarity. Unlike many video upgrades that rehash readily available films without adding significant value, Blue Underground's Maniac -- over 7 hours of extras are included -- is a model for how to handle a catalog Blu-Ray release.
Frank Zito (Joe Spinell) is a sweaty psycho who was abused by his mother. When he sees a woman, he sees a mother. In response, he trolls the streets, beaches, and subways in search of murder victims. After the killings, he retreats to his dingy New York City bachelor pad, which is filled with cheap art, mannequins, and body parts.

William Lustig's raw and sleazy Maniac is making its Blu-Ray debut this Halloween. Our friends at Blue Underground (who just knocked it out of the park with that City of the Living Dead Blu-Ray release) have set an October 26 release date. Expect special features from previous releases to be imported as well as new interviews with Caroline Munro, Tom Savini, composer Jay Chattaway and songwriters Michael Sembello and Dennis Matkosky. Universal Home Entertainment, meanwhile, has revealed the cover art for their October 19 Blu-Ray release of Psycho . Specs can be found in this previous news item .

Quick, what’s the scariest horror film score out there? I’m sure a couple of no-brainers came to mind, and a few of you probably thought of something wholly original. Thanks to the Cinemagic channel on Sirius Xm, we have an official list to choose from. There are a few shocking inclusions, and a couple of omissions, one that I, myself, deem glaring.

Well, it seems that the 25th Anniversary Edition of the original Children of the Corn soundtrack was a very fast sellout, but not the fastest in Varese history. We just received news from Varese that Children of the Corn (1984) sold out within 16 hours, similar to Jonathan Elias' score for Vamp and Jay Chattaway's Silver Bullet. They think the cd that holds the fastest title is probably Georges Delerue's True Confessions. We have been recently notified that Ebay does have a few copies listed so if you were not able to order a copy in time, be sure to check them out!
