At a time when syndicated science fiction was just Star Trek series, it took some guts on Warner Bros’ part to try something darker and more experimental with J. Michael Straczynski’s Babylon 5, designed to tell a sprawling epic that was more political than it was space opera. The show arrived thirty years ago and was successful enough to spawn spin-off five telefilms and a short-lived spinoff, spanning 1993-2007.
The core of it, the 110 episodes from the original five-season series, have been remastered and collected on a nice Blu-ray box set from Warner Home Entertainment. Also included is the original pilot film.
Set in the 23rd century, the Earth Alliance has found its place among star-faring races, notably the Minbari and the Centauri. Some of these races are fine with humans; others wish them gone. Then there are the Vorlons, and no one knows what they want.

Tristan Thompson has been granted temporary guardianship of his 17-year-old brother, Amari Thompson, nine months after the sudden death of their mother, Andrea Thompson.
The 32-year-old NBA star has been serving as Amari’s primary caregiver in the wake of Andrea’s death from a heart attack in January.
In court documents obtained by Et, Tristan received the temporary custody of Amari on Wednesday by the Superior Court of California.
This decision gives the Los Angeles Lakers star “all powers a parent having legal custody of a child would have.” The temporary guardianship is granted through Dec. 5, 2023.
Amari suffers from severe epilepsy and is wheelchair bound. He requires round-the-clock care.
In the documents, Tristan says he does not know where his father, Trevor Douglas Thompson, is at this time. He also plans to file paperwork to help make Amari a U.S. citizen as he was previously residing and receiving...

It’s only a few months before “The Kardashians” will return to our screens. After the famous family’s hit reality TV series streamed its season 3 finale on Thursday, Disney+ announced that season 4 will return on Thursday, Sept. 28.

Her younger sister, Khloé Kardashian, quips, “You’re not getting away from us, babe.”
It looks like momager Kris Jenner and all of the sisters including Kim, Khloé, and Kourtney Kardashian as well as Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner will be back for season 4.
And though Khloé teased that their brother, Rob Kardashian, is open to returning to the franchise in a recent episode, the reclusive former reality star is not mentioned in the promotional materials for the upcoming season.

In the season three finale of "The Kardashians," Tristan Thompson paid tribute to his late mother, Andrea Thompson, who died suddenly on Jan. 5. In the July 27 episode, Khloé and the Kardashian family reacted to the news of Andrea's death and Tristan thanked them for their support. He said, "I don't know what I'd do without you guys."
Later in the episode, Tristan reflected on his mom's legacy. "She helped a lot of people and [will be] remembered for a lot of really great things," he shared, adding that she'd helped him succeed in his basketball career, too. "She was [so proud]," he said, recalling how Andrea could be seen "standing up at the front, screaming" during many of his games.

It may have taken a long time to get here, but Babylon 5 is finally making the leap to Blu-ray. Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment announced today that all five seasons of the iconic sci-fi series will be released on Blu-ray on December 5th.
Babylon 5 has previously only been available on DVD and the image quality wasn’t always the best, so fans have been waiting for this moment for quite some time. You can check out the official box art for Babylon 5: The Complete Series below, which strangely doesn’t feature the titular space station.
All five seasons of Babylon 5 were scanned and remastered from the original camera negative in 4K, with a colour correction and the cleaning of dirt and scratches as well. The many CGI shots of the series have been digitally upscaled to HD, and short of a complete remaster, that’s probably...

A new version of the Emmy-winning space opera television series Babylon 5 is in the works. The CW has put in development Babylon 5, described as a “from-the-ground-up reboot” of the critically acclaimed 1990s series, from original series creator J. Michael Straczynski and Warner Bros. Television.
Written by Straczynski, the reboot revolves around John Sheridan (played by Bruce Boxleitner in the original series), an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, who is assigned to Babylon 5, a five-mile-long space station in neutral space, a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war. His arrival triggers a destiny beyond anything he could have imagined, as an exploratory Earth company accidentally triggers a conflict with a civilization a million years ahead of us, putting Sheridan and the rest of the B5 crew in the line of fire as the last,...

The best film festivals in the world have the ability to transcend cinema and add to ongoing social and political discourse. Film festivals like Sundance, Telluride, Toronto, SXSW, and, of course, the Film Girl Film Festival. This modest film festival is the passion project of prolific Chicago film critic Andrea Thompson, who recognized the need for having more open and candid conversations about the disparate treatment of women in the industry.
With the help of the collaborative and supportive Milwaukee arts community, she founded the Film Girl Film Festival, which features not only female-led and -focused stories from around the world, but most importantly offers diverse and inclusive stories. This year, the film festival takes place on November 8th - 10th at The Underground Collaborative. There are incredible stories here, with topics about age, race, sexuality and all of their intersections.

This week’s question: What is the worst movie remake ever made?
“Beauty and the Beast” (2017)
Mike McGranaghan (@AisleSeat), The Aisle Seat, Ranker
It was a massive hit and got mostly good reviews from other critics, so maybe this is just a personal thing, but I’d have to choose Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast” remake. They took a beautiful, meaningful story and turned it into a big, dumb, overblown, soulless, CGI-heavy bore. Actually, I hate all the Disney live-action remakes. They’re just inferior versions of movies that were virtually perfect. Disney has always been way too willing to cannibalize itself. These films take that unappealing tendency to a new low. The “Beauty and the Beast” remake is the worst of a bad lot.

This year’s awards season has been… a lot. Kevin Hart. #PresentAll24. “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The list goes on.
But it couldn’t have been all bad, right? The Oscars haven’t happened yet, and so we don’t know if the final verdicts will offer a measure of redemption or make things even worse (mileage will vary!), but possibly maybe there was some upside to be found in the last few months. Maybe a favorite actor finally got their time in the sun, or a certain film was boosted by a nomination? Maybe some of the broader conversations sparked by awards season or the Oscar broadcast itself led / could lead to something positive?

This week’s question: In honor of “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” which effectively reboots Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” saga, which current movie franchise should be put out of our misery once and for all?
Carlos Aguilar (Carlos_Film), The Wrap, Remezcla, MovieMaker Magazine
Cancelling the “Avatar” franchise before it even becomes one would be ideal, but we know that James Cameron’s arrogance won’t allow that to happen. Aside from their ridiculous alleged titles, the prospect of four more movies based on a virtually forgotten blockbuster from 2009 seems more like a director’s refusal to let go than something fans are eager to consume. Remember this lot popping up in Quantum Leap? They're our pick of the best guest performances in the time travel show...
Once again, we’re celebrating great guest performances in one of our favourite shows. We’re defining a guest appearance as an actor who plays a particular character no more than twice over the run of the show. There’s a bit more competition for the list for this show than most – since Quantum Leap only had two regular cast members and nearly every other actor on the show appeared only once!
See related Limbo and the return of the 2D platformer 10. Bruce McGill as Al the Bartender in Mirror Image
Al the Bartender is far from the only mysterious, enigmatic, highly knowledgeable bartender in science fiction and fantasy (Nelson the barman in Life On Mars springs to mind, for one). However, he is a key...

‘Nymphomaniac: Vol. II’: More interesting, more provocative, and more philosophical than its predecessor (photo: Papou, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Kookie Ryan in ‘Nymphomaniac: Vol. II’) (See ‘Nymphomaniac: Vol. I’ Review: Lars von Trier an ‘Actual Genius.) Previously on Nymphomaniac: Vol. I… Adult Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), beaten and unconscious, is found in a snow-covered alley by Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård), an unassuming fellow with a gentle demeanor who takes her to his apartment. In his austere dwelling she recounts her adventures as a young nymphomaniac in a series of stories, each preceded by director Lars von Trier’s requisite thematic chapter headings and cinematic asides. Young Joe’s (Stacy Martin) exploits, from her debut sexual experience with Jerome (Shia Labeouf), through her adventures on a train, to her very dramatic experience with a married man, his kids, and his wife (played by Uma Thurman in what might be the best 10 minutes of...

While director James Cameron’s latest big-budget film, Avatar, astonishes audiences with a torrid of stunning visual effects, the movie has also grown a surprisingly large and rabid fan-base. Just ask Anthony Hansen, a Salt Lake City-based customer service representative who works for Stencil Tech, or at least he used to until he was fired from the company for expressing his “anti-Avatar” views of the movie.
One of the most highly anticipated films of the second half of the decade, Avatar has been touted as the special effects event that would change cinema forever. The movie centers on Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic Marine who takes a job on the alien world of Pandora in order to operate his dead brother’s avatar, a lab-grown “native” fused with his brother’s DNA to that of a Na’vi, the indigenous humanoid population on Pandora. Hired by a non-governmental mining operation on the planet,...

Natasha Lyonne, covered in blood, figured prominently in the first poster for Joshua Grannell's All About Evil. The second showcases the hauntingly beautiful Jade and Nikita Ramsey, who play "Veda" and "Vera", killer twins who were institutionalized earlier in life after murdering their family at seven years of age. They are silent but deadly and were born knowing all about evil.
There will be five more posters released over the next five months, and Grannell promises he and his crew are working hard on the official website, which will feature the first trailer.

In an effort to hold on to dwindling fans and make sense of convoluted plot lines that have even the writers mystified, the makers of TV's Heroes have yet again launched another web series, Heroes: Destiny, a self-described "micro series" that has emerged from the "Create Your Hero" interactive campaign last year. The extent of the interactive element comprised of fans selecting the characteristics of the new hero, such as name, special powers, personality and physical features, which were voted on each week. Columbian-born actor Roberto Urbina plays Santiago, a Peruvian soccer lover and devout Catholic who discovers his extraordinary gifts of accelerated probability and super speed. The show also stars Lina Esco (CBS' Cane) and Andrea Thompson (24). and is directed by Eagle Egilsson (CSI: Miami, The Wire).

Nude photos were flying around the internet as soon as CNN announced former NYPD Blue star Andrea Thompson would present Headline News. The sexy blonde appeared naked in Manhattan Gigolo and also did some nude modeling work. Photos from both were soon on the world wide web. When in 2000 she left the hit cop show - where she played Detective Jill Kirkendall - she landed a job as a reporter on Albuquerque's Krqe-tv before moving to CNN where she starts next month. Now a former KQRE worker claims that Andrea once threw a tantrum in which she kicked a wall and quit in disgust. The ex-colleague says that Thompson messed up a story about a dog biting a man when KQRE went live to her in the field. "She missed her cue, " the newsroom mole says. "She wasn't ready and she stumbled through the story. It was really awkward. Once she got off the air, she blamed her cameraman for everything. She was yelling at him, saying that she wasn't going to put up with incompetent people like him. She kicked a wall and broke her foot. Then she stormed out and quit, but the managing editor of the station, a woman named Michele Donaldson, who's now the assistant news director, persuaded her to come back." KQRE news director Dan Salamone says that the tale of Thompson breaking her foot "was at the very least an exaggeration - I never saw a cast on her foot, " but acknowledged the possibility of Thompson losing her temper.
