Mariah Carey has one big rule when it comes to songwriting: make sure the lyrics apply to as many listeners as possible. Rolling Stone can exclusively share a snippet of Carey’s upcoming “Portrait of a Portrait” episode on Audible’s Words + Music series, out Thursday.

Over the past week or so, Apple Music has slowly unveiled the titles included in its list of the “100 best albums.” Today, the top 10 albums were revealed, with Miss Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill claiming the No. 1 spot. Rounding out the top five are Michael Jackson’s Thriller; The Beatles’ Abbey Road; Prince’s Purple Rain; and Frank Ocean’s Blonde.
The top 10 also includes Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life; Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (Deluxe Version); Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black; Nirvana’s Nevermind; and Beyoncé’s Lemonade.
In all honestly, it’s a pretty safe top 10, especially considering the drama that unfolded when Apple unveiled picks 11-20 and slotted Adele’s 21 at No. 15 and Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) at No. 18 — ahead of albums like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds,...

The contender to watch this week: “Uncropped”
A perfect companion piece to “The Freaks Came Out to Write,” Tricia Romano‘s new book about the history of The Village Voice, “Uncropped” profiles one of the iconoclastic newspaper’s signature photographers. James Hamilton captured the streets of New York, musicians like Patti Smith and the Beastie Boys, wartime conflicts in China and the Philippines, and production stills for the likes of Francis Ford Coppola and Wes Anderson. His juicy career is detailed in this unconventional documentary directed by D.W. Young (“The Booksellers”), who stages a handful of intimate conversations between Hamilton and his collaborators, including Anderson and Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore. Following a limited theatrical release in April, “Uncropped” is available on VOD.

A muse, a mother, a fashionista, an actor, a rock ‘n’ roll icon — it’s hard to describe exactly why Anita Pallenberg remains such a compelling figure more than a half-century after the captivating blonde sang backing vocals on the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” and starred in movies like “Performance” and “Barbarella.”
The new documentary “Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg” delves into both the beautiful and tragic moments of her eventful life with the help of a treasure trove of home movies and interviews, as well as an unpublished memoir penned by Pallenberg and narrated by Scarlett Johansson. The footage is coupled with interviews of the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards, with whom she had a significant relationship, their children Marlon and Angela Richards, director Volker Schlondorff, who cast her in some of his films, and her former friends and associates.

Patti Smith responded Saturday to Taylor Swift’s recent mention of her in the title track of her album, The Tortured Poets Department.
Swift name-drops Smith, a rock poet and artist, alongside poet Dylan Thomas in the chorus of her song “The Tortured Poets Department,” released along with its namesake album Friday. Wim Wenders's Perfect Days is now showing on Mubi in many countries.Perfect Days.“She uses the same words we do, yet there’s something so special.” This commentary is delivered by a bookseller (Inuko Inuyama) in Wim Wenders’s Perfect Days (2023). The woman behind the counter is recommending the works of Japanese author Aya Kōda to the film’s protagonist, Hirayama (Kōji Yakusho). But she could just as easily be describing the spell cast by the movie itself, which uses familiar settings and understated dialogue to summon a quiet, pervasive magic. In the New German Cinema director’s latest feature, which takes place in present-day Tokyo, sudden waves of hope, gratitude, and meaning can arrive through brief interactions with strangers, a tall glass of ice water, a beloved song heard through car speakers, or just an upward glance at the sky upon leaving the house in the morning.Through these simple encounters,...

With a new BBC radio series now launched, Courtney Love is once again proving the power of the adage “go large or go home.”
In a wide ranging interview with the UK’s Standard today, the former Hole front woman puts forth her take on some of the biggest names in the music industry. Let’s just say, Love bites in deep in the newspaper, to quote from her 1998 tune “Celebrity Skin,” to get her pound of flesh from Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Madonna and recent Coachella headliner Lana Del Rey.
“Taylor is not important,” the People vs. Larry Flint star says of the superstar.
“She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist,” Love added.
The contrarian opinion on Swift is a big shift from where Love was on the Folklore singer just over two years ago.

Music movies are having a moment — if, indeed, they ever stopped having one. Take the pop-music biopic. There are times, like right now, when it surges in popularity, yet the form has never gone out of style. And music documentaries, a staple of the indie-film world, have only proliferated during the streaming era. This means that they have to compete for visibility, but a ton of them are getting made and (mostly) getting seen. They’ve become a happy epidemic.
A few, like “Amy” or “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?,” are popular and vital enough to have carved out a place in the culture — and, in the case of both those films, to have inspired the creation of a biopic. I have it on good authority that when you’re trying to put together a music documentary, the prospect of it spawning a biopic can be a key selling point.

Fifteen minutes into the debut episode of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s podcast, the power is knocked out by a bomb cyclone. Her guest, Jane Fonda, continues speaking, unaware the connection is lost, and Louis-Dreyfus frantically attempts to reconnect, amid a few choice swear words and a blaring home alarm.
Rather than edit it out, Louis-Dreyfus saw it as an asset and kept it in the episode: “It’s just funny. So, I figured why not? Let’s include it. Everybody can relate too. I was so tense.”

In each episode of the podcast, Louis-Dreyfus asks guests, including Diane von Furstenberg, Isabel Allende and Carol Burnett, about their careers and relationships, as well as their views on sex,...

Down to the wire, awards movies are still being rolled out on digital platforms. Two cherished nominees — one an international film, the other a documentary — have debuted this week. Even though it won’t affect either movie’s Oscar odds (voting closed last week), their premieres should be a blessing to all the completists out there.
The contender to watch this week: “Perfect Days”
Three-time Oscar nominee Wim Wenders directed this sublime slice-of-life drama about an unassuming Tokyo janitor (Koji Yakusho) with a quiet daily routine that includes watering his seedlings, visiting the same stores and restaurants, and choosing a cassette tape to hear on his drive to work. “Perfect Days” follows two weeks in the protagonist’s life, one of which involves a series of disruptions that rattle his stasis. The movie will compete for Best International Feature Film at Sunday’s Oscars. It’s currently playing in a handful of theaters,...

James Hamilton is an iconic chronicler of New York City culture, a photographer who, throughout his career, has captured the likes of Charles Mingus, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, David Lynch, Jean-Luc Godard, Meryl Streep, Alfred Hitchcock, Liza Minnelli, and Wes Anderson. Now, he gets the documentary treatment in the film “Uncropped,” directed by D.W. Young and executive-produced by Wes Anderson himself. IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer below.
“Uncropped” also turns its focus on the heyday of alternative print journalism in New York. Hamilton was best known for his photographs of the art and music scene in NYC throughout the ’70s and ’80s while working as a staffer at Crawdaddy, The New York Herald, Harper’s Bazaar, The Village Voice, and the New York Observer. The film also tracks his career and life beginning in his early days at Pratt in Brooklyn, then an apprenticeship where he learned how to shoot,...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Actors (Betsey Brown)
With its central storyline revolving around a male actor (Peter Vack) adopting a phony trans identity in order to secure roles, Betsey Brown’s Actors is engineered to court controversy. But the film is more than empty provocation. Actors is about the inherent vulnerability it takes to be a working actor, and we catch glimpses of the ceaseless cycle of auditions and self-tapes listed as private on Vimeo. This includes one very funny early sequence in which Brown’s mother and father (played by her actual parents) walk her through a self-tape for a lewd part. It’s a role Brown knows she has little chance at landing, so why go through with the humiliation? Because born performers have no choice.

Despite the open disdain expressed by lead stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, The Twilight Saga is embarking on a new show. The news could come as a bit of a shock to viewers who remember Pattinson openly roasting the series every chance he got and Stewart making every effort to distance herself from Bella Swan’s image.
Both actors have made a concerted effort to move away from the $3.3 billion blockbuster franchise that made them household names. Pattinson has ventured into more complex, edgier roles in mainstream films (Tenet), while Stewart has also made her name in challenging roles (Still Alice) in indie projects as well.

So, despite the cast’s dislike for the franchise, Twilight is getting a new show? It could be a case of nostalgia, or the makers see the potential for expanding the Twilight universe beyond the original films.

Abel Ferrara is set to begin production on his latest feature, “American Nails,” a modern gangster story inspired by ancient tragedy that stars Asia Argento and Willem Dafoe, Variety has learned.
According to the producers, “American Nails” charts “the rise and fall of this modern Phaedra, in a tale set in the gangster world of primal violence, power and revenge. This no-holds-barred retelling of Euripides’ masterpiece pits Argento against the male-dominated remnants of power and entitlement in contemporary Italy.”
Written by Ferrara and Rossella De Venuto, pic is produced by Diana Phillips and Philipp Kreuzer for Rimsky Productions and Maze Pictures. Production is set to begin in Italy this summer.
“American Nails” marks Dafoe’s eighth collaboration with Ferrara, including the 2014 Venice biopic “Pasolini,” 2019 Cannes Film Festival selection “Tommaso” and 2020 Berlinale entry “Siberia.” Coming off his acclaimed performance in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar hopeful “Poor Things,” Dafoe will again team up...

I sat in silence for a while after finishing Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days and then ended up on Spotify, searching for the film’s soundtrack. The latter is ironically funny, given our lead, Mr. Hirayama, doesn’t have a clue what “Spotify” is. The man lives in 2023, but he belongs to an old world. On the surface, Wender’s Japanese drama appears to be a celebration of the mundane, much like Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson, but underneath the surface, there lie layers of melancholy, heartbreak, and hope. It’s also a portrayal of working-class people, something that we saw very recently in Aki Kaurismäki’s Fallen Leaves, but the treatment is much different here. Wender’s signature style, which involves a lot of silence, cynicism, and the use of striking imagery as tools of storytelling, fits this story and its central character perfectly.

Azealia Banks is one of the most controversial rappers who ever lived. So maybe it’s no surprise she once praised John Lennon’s most offensive song. The tune proved offensive even at the time, and some radio stations didn’t want to play it, irrespective of John’s progressive intentions.

You may know Kōji Yakusho as the oyster-slurping mystery man from the noodle-Western extraordinaire Tampopo (1985). Perhaps you remember him as the depressed suburbanite who ballroom dances his blues away in the international feel-good hit Shall We Dance? (1996). He’s the reformed felon in the Cannes-winning character study The Eel (1997), a former muse to filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa in the late Nineties and early aughts, the familiar face who graced Hollywood fare like Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) and Babel (2006), and — if you’ve followed his 40-plus years as a major figure in...

Retired actor Daniel Day-Lewis made a surprise appearance at Thursday night’s National Board of Review Awards gala to honor Martin Scorsese with the best director award.
Scorsese and Day-Lewis previously worked together on 1993’s “The Age of Innocence” and 2002’s “Gangs of New York,” but if it were up to Scorsese that wouldn’t be their last collaboration. The legendary filmmaker teased that “maybe there’s time for one more” film together during his acceptance speech.
“Thank you, Daniel. To receive this honor presented by Daniel is just an honor in itself,” Scorsese said to the crowd at Manhattan’s 42 Cipriani. “We did two films together and it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life, I must say. Maybe there’s time for one more. Maybe! He’s the best.”
Day-Lewis, who retired from acting in 2017, called working with Scorsese “one of the greatest joys” of his life.

Once upon a time, many many moons ago during a lunar eclipse (as the reception of his 2003 Pictures From The Surface Of The Earth photograph exhibition at the James Cohan gallery in New York was going on), Wim Wenders told me about his favourite fairy tale. Hans Im Glück, or Lucky Hans, trades in a series of exchanges all of his earthly possessions for something generally considered of lesser value until at the end, relieved of his burdens in a graceful way, finds what he was looking for all along.

If you look at it from Sylvie’s point of view, the first season of Marvel’s Loki was a total success story. The vengeful variant of Asgard’s God Of Mischief crashed into proceedings with a specific agenda in mind: to not only find whoever was running the Time Variance Authority, but to strike them dead, overthrow the notion of the Sacred Timeline, and free the multiverse. Check, check, check. By the end of the Season 1 finale, Sylvie had ticked everything off her to-do list – even if it left, well, the entire notion of reality hanging in the balance. She is, in her own way, a complete inspiration.
Heading into Season 2, then, it was Loki who scrambled to piece the very fabric of existence back together while Sylvie tried to enjoy the fruits of her labour – or, the McDonald’s burger of her labour. It was a journey that took in more time travel,...

R.E.M.’s 11th studio album, Up, informally flagged the start of the third and final phase of the band’s career, following both their early I.R.S. years and their mainstream peak in the 1990s. Drummer Bill Berry departed the band after suffering a brain aneurysm while on tour in 1995, but the remaining members opted not to replace him, instead employing electronic drum programming throughout the majority of the album. And the timing, it seemed, was serendipitous, as the electronica movement was reaching its apotheosis.
Up subsequently marked the end of R.E.M.’s decade-long relationship with rock producer Scott Litt, replaced by Ray of Light knob-twirler Pat McCarthy and mixer Nigel Godrich, who produced Ok Computer. And yet, the album doesn’t immerse itself as vigorously in the genre as those two watershed releases. Sonically, tracks like the Eno-esque opener “Airportman” and the gently percolating “Suspicion...
