Thirty years ago today, on September 21, 1993, at 10/9c, NYPD Blue premiered on ABC.
However, its debut didn't necessarily mean it reached every household.
The controversial series premiered to apocalyptic fanfare, with critics wondering if the series would usher in the end of TV as viewers knew it.
It’s funny the things you remember from your youth. I was at the age where the idea of a series willing to push the envelope, delivering a taste of the big screen on the small, sounded like an excellent idea.
They say that all publicity is good publicity, but people around the country were so concerned about the effect the show may have on the morals of the everyman that 57 local stations around the country refused to air the premiere.
A month later, there were still 45 ABC affiliates who, due to the possibility of coarse language and nudity, were still not airing it.

Since 2021, Giancarlo Esposito has held the distinction of being the most-recognized Black performer in the history of the Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy category. After coming up short on all of his past nominations for “Breaking Bad” (2012), “Better Call Saul” (2019-2020) and “The Mandalorian” (2021), he now has a shot at finally triumphing on his potential third “Better Call Saul” bid. This would not only finally make the six-season AMC drama an Emmy-winning show, but would also make Esposito his category’s first Black winner.
Esposito’s appearance in the final season of “Better Call Saul” serves as the conclusion of a performance that had begun 13 years earlier on “Breaking Bad.” Although the newer series mainly functioned as a backstory for Jimmy “Saul Goodman” McGill (Bob Odenkirk), it naturally fleshed out many more featured “Breaking Bad” characters, including Esposito’s Gus Fring. In his last moments on screen, the narcotics kingpin...

When “This Is Us” star Sterling K. Brown received the 2018 Screen Actors Guild Award for Best TV Drama Actor, Best TV Comedy Actor became the only competitive SAG category that has yet to be conquered by a Black performer. Following the unsuccessful bids of Bernie Mac, Anthony Anderson and Tituss Burgess, Tyler James Williams could soon close the loop by being honored for his work on ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.” This potential victory would make him only the 10th Black artist and third Black man to ever win an individual TV SAG Award.
According to Gold Derby’s SAG Awards predictions, Williams is one of the likeliest candidates for a 2023 Best TV Comedy Actor nomination. His portrayal of straight-laced first grade teacher Gregory Eddie has earned him the fifth place spot on our list, behind Bill Hader (“Barry”), “Only Murders in the Building” pair Steve Martin and Martin Short, and...

In season one of The Sopranos, Tony Soprano suggests that if he were not in the mob maybe he’d be “selling patio furniture off Route 22.” Well, in the dystopian future of Lapsis, maybe Tony would be like Ray (Dean Imperial), a portly New Yorker from Queens who’s lured into working for Cblr, a tech firm whose contractors lay cables for the latest ‘Quantum’ computer technology. Now, connecting obelisks with cables laid haphazardly along the countryside floor is not at all credible, but Lapsis is a smart little sci-fi satire of the gig-economy that is bolstered by a great performance from Imperial.
Anyone who’s seen The Sopranos will clock Ray and Tony’s resemblance in an instant. Ray has the slicked back hair and masculine corpulence that Anna (Madeline Wise), another Cblr worker, describes as a ‘Seventies mobster vibe’. She’s not wrong, but the vibe is strictly...

Welcome to the world of the gig economy gone quantum, literally. Lapsis, the first fictional feature from documentarian Noah Hutton posits a near future/alternative present where quantum computing has gone mainstream. And the new “ride share” is cabling, running fiber across the wilderness to link massive slab like junction boxes.
Ray (Dean Imperial) struggles to make ends meet as a driver for a shady airport delivery service. He doesn’t have a wife or kids but he does have a brother Jamie (Babe Howard) who suffers from Omnia, a chronic-fatigue like ailment. Getting him into a treatment program is well beyond his means. So, despite his technophobia and lack of physical conditioning, he turns to Cblr, one of the companies hiring “independent contractors”’ to lay cable for quantum personal computers.

As multi-billion dollar corporations expand their reach within their respective industries (and beyond), the wage gap in our country increases. Executives are granted astronomical bonuses while the people on the ground floor are shifted from full-time employment to freelancers as a way to mitigate the possibility of unions, paying health insurance, etc. Welcome to the gig economy: a capitalist spin promising “self-employment” and freedom while actually trending towards isolation so that anyone can be cut loose before they start costing more to keep on the payroll than they’re worth in profits. Meet your quota. Follow the automated voice about break time. Compete with your fellow workers and quite literally take food out of their mouths upon winning while your bosses laugh over a scotch on the golf course.

It’s taken a very long time for the term “economic inequality” to approach popular usage, but we seem to be getting there at last. Gig-worker business models, government policies and the declining power of unions have contributed to many Americans’ feeling the deck is stacked against them in ways that the old-school values of enterprise, thrift and even education can no longer override.
Still, as urgent as the issue is, it’s not easily dramatized — not without sticking to the still-sexy malfeasance of high-end wrongdoers in movies like “The Wolf of Wall Street” or “The Big Short.” Noah Hutton’s “Lapsis” manages to meet that challenge in entertainingly original terms, however. This tale of a floundering gig-economy worker straddles both the bleak present-tense reality of Ken Loach’s “Sorry We Missed You” and the subversive near-future political satire of Boots Riley’s “Sorry to Bother You” while arriving at...

On a sunny weekend afternoon, the Fox lot was quiet except for the group that gathered to dedicate Building 1 to the writer-producer-showrunner who occupied it for the last few decades: Steven Bochco. The building now bears his name and a plaque with his distinct signature, which was also used as his production card on his television shows.
Gary Newman, chairman and CEO of Fox Television Group, spoke at the dedication, acknowledging the presence of cast members from “NYPD Blue,” “L.A. Four of our Emmy Experts and one Top 24 User are predicting Jeffrey Wright (‘Westworld’) to win Best Drama Supporting Actor. If they are correct, Wright would be the first black champ of the one remaining acting category that has never had one.
After Viola Davis’ drama lead actress victory in 2015 for “How to Get Away with Murder,” Best Drama Supporting Actor is the only existing category that has yet to award a black performer. Eleven black actors have been nominated, including Wright last year; the others are Greg Morris (“Mission: Impossible,” 1969, 1970, 1972), Taurean Blacque (“Hill Street Blues,” 1982), James Earl Jones (“Under One Roof,” 1995), Eriq La Salle (“ER,” 1995, 1997, 1998), James McDaniel (“NYPD Blue,” 1996), Steve Harris (“The Practice,” 1999, 2000), Dule Hill (“The West Wing,” 2002), Andre Braugher (“Men of a Certain Age,” 2010, 2011), Giancarlo Esposito (“Breaking Bad,” 2012) and Ron Cephas Jones (“This Is Us,” 2017).

To be clear: We’re not saying the woman with her back to the camera in the Sleepy Hollow photo above is definitely the missing Agent Abigail Mills.
We’re simply positing that, difference in hairstyle aside, that woman could be the leftenant (and honestly, we really want it to be).
Alas, things are often not what they seem on the Fox supernatural drama, so let’s focus on the other shots in this new gallery from the Feb. 12 and 19 episodes: Ichabod skulks around in the dark on some Witness-looking business with Jenny, Sophie and Daniel represent the FBI and...

The story of Abbie and Jenny Mills’ deadbeat dad has been canon since Sleepy Hollow‘s first season: Unable to handle his wife’s increasing mental instability, Ezra Mills bailed on his family when the sisters were young.
But what if Papa Mills’ story has gotten as twisted as every other historical tale the Fox drama tells?
“I think the hardcore fans have always wondered about Dad,” showrunner Clifton Campbell tells TVLine. “There was a picture painted of him early on that was the guy who ran off, who couldn’t deal, and who fled. It’s very nice to...

After Sleepy Hollow fans got past the shock of the fall finale’s final moments — in which Abbie sacrificed herself in order to save Jenny, Ichabod, Joe and the rest of the town — a small yet important question rose from the rubble:
Was Abbie the “diamond in the rough” alluded to by an FBI bigwig the week before?
In case you weren’t blessed with Ichabod’s photographic memory, allow us to remind you about the scene, which took place in “The Art of War” episode. When Daniel visited the home of one of his superiors to ask for an extension on the Nevins case,...

The father of the "Sleepy Hollow" characters Abbie and Jenny, played by Nicole Beharie and Lyndie Greenwood, will be reuniting with his daughters on the series, in the form of James McDaniel, who will play Ezra Mills when the Fox drama returns for the second half of its currently season next February. Fans of the series may already know that Ezra has been estranged from his daughters since their childhood, when he abandoned them with their mother who had to be institutionalized soon thereafter. Now Ezra will return hoping to become a part of his daughters' lives once again. I'm sure drama will ensue. Earlier this week, Fox announced that "Sleepy Hollow,"...

Life lesson from this week’s Sleepy Hollow: Don’t put off telling your loved ones how you feel about them, because you never know when one of you might get turned into a glowing war beast summoned by a very bad man with an even worse agenda.
So I suppose we all owe Atticus Nevins some gratitude, because if it weren’t for his wild-eyed pursuit of Jenny Mills — aka the walking, talking Shard of Anubis, thanks to her touching the gem barehanded last episode — we’d never get the Joe/Jenny and Ichabod/Abbie tender moments we see in this week’s hour.

Hysteria, Season 1, Episode 1: “Pilot”
Written by Shaun Cassidy
Directed by Otto Bathurst
Released August 28, 2014 by Amazon
A veteran of television writing, and known mostly for having created the ABC science fiction drama Invasion, Shaun Cassidy’s next foray to the small screen comes courtesy of Amazon. Titled Hysteria, the series follows a medical investigator in Austin as she attempts to understand the cause behind a series of seizures and spasmic movements affecting a group of largely unrelated individuals. With Mena Suvari in the lead role, Amazon and the creators have released the pilot online in an attempt to get a series greenlight. Unfortunately, poor characterisation and a simplistic mystery at its core dooms this pilot by seemingly promising a dull show.
One of the key problems with this pilot, and potentially with the series as a whole, is that the central...

Big news today: We’re excited to announce Amazon Studios’ third pilot season, beginning August 28th and featuring three half hour comedies The Cosmopolitans, Really and Red Oaks, and two hour-long dramatic thrillers Hand of God and Hysteria. For one month, it will be up to you to watch, rate and comment – ultimately helping us decide which of them get the greenlight.
“There is something for everyone in this season,” says Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. The glamorous life of modern day expats in Paris. The hijinks of a summer job at a country club in 1980s New Jersey. The visions of a vigilante judge who appears to be channeling God. The complexities of marriage and friendship among a circle of friends in suburban Chicago. And the mysteries behind a psycho-physiological illness spreading through a small town in Texas.
You can help choose which of these stories should get “picked up” to become shows.
