After coming out in the 1990s, Sophie B. Hawkins is being open about the realities of living in the spotlight. Hawkins, 58, claims to have “coined the phrase” omnisexual when she came out in 1992.
“I took omni and I took sexual and I put them together, and I said, ‘This represents me,'” Hawkins said. She recalled explaining to a male journalist, “My sexuality is not based on my gender, and it’s not defined by your gender.'”
At the time, it was “a very new concept,” she said. “People did not pick up on it, and they just said, ‘Ah, you’re gay. You’re gay. You’re gay.'”
Hawkins also said that she takes a little credit for the term’s use. Now, though, “omnisexual is actually a thing.”

It’s well known that the Grammys have a history of snubbing hip-hop music. Whether the reason is racial or musical bias, generational disconnect with older voters, or a mixture of both, the fact is that it’s harder for hip-hop artists to win in the big categories. And if it is still an issue now, you can imagine how hard it used to be a few decades ago. Knowing all of that makes a certain win truly stand out in Grammy history. At the 1993 awards, hip-hop collective Arrested Development won Best New Artist, becoming the first hip-hop act to win the award, and the first hip-hop act to win in the general field. Let’s look back at the historic win, the factors that contributed to it, and the impact it had in Grammy and pop culture history.

As someone who absolutely adores slasher movies and considers Wes Craven’s Scream to be one of the best and most consistent franchises ever committed to celluloid, I was the prime audience for Leigh Janiak’s Fear Street: 1994, which lovingly pays tribute to Scream in a variety of ways (including Marco Beltrami’s score from the original film), but also sets out to do its own thing as well. And while Fear Street: 1994 absolutely nails all of its slasher tropes and fully embraces mid-’90s nostalgia to a T, what I really appreciated is how the story is also infused with a supernatural bent, making it a standout effort from Janiak and everyone involved that does a brilliant job of creating something of a horror-centric cinematic universe utilizing the works of R.L. Stine as its backdrop.

Halestorm revisit some of their past songs on the new EP Reimagined, out now. But the project isn’t a clichéd set of acoustic readings; instead, the hard-rock band stays true to the EP’s title and revamps the arrangements. Their 2009 debut single “I Get Off” taps into brooding funk, while 2012’s “Break In” becomes a duet between Lzzy Hale and Amy Lee of Evanescence.
The left-field head-turner, however, is a faithful cover of “I Will Always Love You,” written by Dolly Parton and a signature hit for Whitney Houston.

Rest in peace, Luke Perry — you walked so Jordan Catalano could run. The first time most of us saw him, he was bad boy Dylan McKay on the Nineties hit Beverly Hills, 90210, easily the best TV teen drama ever. He was the new kid in town, all smoldering eyebrows and Elvis sideburns. The first time he meets his best friend, Jason Priestley’s Brandon Walsh, he picks him up in his convertible. Brandon finds a book on the passenger seat — “Ah, a little leisure reading.” He’s shocked by the...

Everyone knows that a Sadie Hawkins dance is the yearly high school tradition in which the girls ask guys out – even if they have no idea who Sadie Hawkins is. In fact, most people probably know this even if their particular high school didn't offer any such opportunity to reverse gender norms.
Why, then, is it so celebrated? Well, for one it's long been a staple of pop culture and of teen-centered TV shows in particular. In fact, a lot of people may have only ever experienced a Sadie Hawkins dance through TV. And TV shows are still doing it today,...

With Community season 6 around the corner & all 5 seasons now on UK Netflix, should you skip or watch the Dan Harmon-less "gas leak year"?
If you're enjoying watching Community for the first time, since it arrived on UK Netflix last week, the anomaly of the fourth season might be a little bewildering. Where the rest of the show is witty, enjoyable and well-versed in pop culture without being obnoxious about it, season four is almost like an exaggeration of what came before, and yet if you can get through it, it becomes great again in season five.
For those of us more acclimatised to the volatile behind-the-scenes situation on the NBC show, you might remember that there was a season there where series creator and showrunner Dan Harmon was fired, only to be re-hired the following year in an unprecedented turnaround by the network.
With Harmon reinstated, season four looks even more like a blip.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Iron Man 2 director Favreau is currently in negotiations to direct Disney's upcoming live-action reboot of Rudyard Kipling's beloved story collection. Big Bang Community strikes again, in another episode that misses most of its marks. Here's Emma's review...
This review contains spoilers.
4.8 Herstory of Dance
In what has become a depressingly familiar occurrence at Greendale, Herstory of Dance once again appeared to have several of the essential Community ingredients, but was seriously lacking in both method and execution. When the even-more-bizarrely-costumed-than-usual Dean Pelton announces a college dance that will allow Abed to live out one of the classic sitcom/romcom setups, classic comedy of the surreal Community style seems like a cake walk. Abed on two dates at once? In costume? While tricking Annie and Shirley? Surely even Big Bang Community couldn't mess this up...
However, as the clearly audible, collective gritting of audience teeth bore out, even Big Bang Community can mess this up. Where once the show's TV and movie homages were subtle,...

Community, Season 4, Episode 10: “Intro to Knots”
Written by Andy Bobrow
Directed by Tristram Shapeero
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
Let’s talk for a second about Abed Nadir. In a lot of ways, he seems emblematic of the problems that have hamstrung Community’s fourth season. As soon as he arrives at Jeff’s Christmas party, he is actively trying to mold it into a Die Hard homage. This isn’t unprecedented behavior for Abed, he shaped what is perhaps the series’ best episode “Critical Film Studies” into a My Dinner With Andrew homage, but recently it seems to be his sole motivating concern week in and week out. It feels like a shift in his character. If we take a look at “Cooperative Calligraphy,” an episode “Intro to Knots” closely resembles. Abed constantly comments “It’s a bottle episode!” but he is not attempting to propagate it.

Britta Perry is a character unlike any other on television. She’s the worst, but she’s also the heart of Community, constantly striving to make the world a slightly better place. This part of her character takes on many different forms, such as forcing Jeff to confront his father or taking on some ridiculous cause she doesn’t fully understand. Whether she’s being loved or hated, Britta is always there to unify people for one reason or another. “Herstory of Dance” tackles this phenomenon head on, with Britta making a fool of herself by confusing Sophie B. Hawkins with Susan B. Anthony (made all the more funny because she has a cat named Susan B. Anthony) when the Dean announces a Sadie Hawkins dance. Britta mocks the Dean for how easy it is to throw a dance rather than do something meaningful, so she’s throwing her own dance.

While "Community" tends to be a rather hilarious show all of the time, its funniest moments often come in the final seconds of every broadcast. These random and ridiculous tags usually reflect upon the themes of the episode or preview what is to come.
For Thursday's (April 4) episode, "Herstory of Dance," there are actually two tags. The original tag filmed featured singer Sophie B. Hawkins spending time with Troy and Abed. Meanwhile, the aired tag showcased the puppets that will return for next week's "Intro to Felt Surrogacy."
You could only watch one of these tags during the original broadcast, but now you have the chance to decide which is best.
Before it was decided that the "Community" tag should preview the upcoming puppets, the original tag for this dance-themed episode brought Hawkins together with her big fans, Troy (Donald Glover) and Abed (Danny Pudi). The rest is musical hertory.

Community, Season 4, Episode 8: “Herstory of Dance”
Written by Jack Kukoda

“Herstory of Dance” is a surprisingly sweet episode of Community. What initially seems like a rather lazy Abed plot, another example of him attempting to enact fictional tropes in the real world, is granted another, deeper level when Brie Larson’s Rebecca assists him in his hijinks. In that moment, it transcends the emptiness of Abed’s arc this season and becomes truly affecting. It also nicely incorporates itself into the A-plot as Abed interrupts Sophie B. Hawkins to declare his love to Rebecca. A moment particularly moving because, while Abed is again exploiting a trope, he’s doing it out of genuine human emotion rather than a calculated attempt to remove himself from the world, to neatly pack the chaos of reality into three-act boxes.

In true "Community" fashion, the Greendale gang's decision to throw a Sadie Hawkins dance took a weird detour, after Britta decided that they should organize the party in honor of a true feminist: Sophie B. Hawkins.
Though the rest of the study group was pretty sure she meant Susan B. Anthony, it wouldn't be "Community" unless Britta managed to totally Britta an event.
Still, the confusion worked in everyone's favor when the real Sophie B. Hawkins showed up to perform, and Abed had a heartwarming moment with a suitably awkward girl named Rachel, who actually seemed interested in going on a date with our lovable weirdo.
TVOvermind had one word for the romance -- "aww!" -- and was suitably impressed with Hawkins' appearance.

I had a friend who, several years ago, decried Community as "too 'T.G.I.F.'"
For those of you too young to remember (or those of you whose parents only let you watch PBS while growing up), "T.G.I.F." was a Friday night programming block on ABC that featured such thought-provoking, high-brow comedy as Perfect Strangers, Full House and whatever show Urkel* was on.
I knew my friend meant it as a put-down about the way Community liked to have episodes end in a pat moral lesson, but I thought Community was a bit like "T.G.I.F." in the good way. In the same way that the "T.G.I.F." line-up had its mysterious foreign cousins, appearances by Stefan Urquelle, and other improbable nonsense that left my pre-teen self feeling like the world was ultimately a good place, so did Community leave me...

Tonight's episode of Community promises extra resonance for anyone who spent too much of 1992 belting out "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover." That's because the half-hour finds Britta deciding to throw a Sophie B. Hawkins dance — and insisting she's not Britta-ing the more traditional Sadie Hawkins (or confusing Sophie B. with Susan B. Anthony). Vulture has an exclusive first look at "Herstory of Dance" below. No promise that this clip will rock you till the daylight comes, but it is funny.

Syfy has ordered a new competition series, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Exit is based on a Japanese show and follows four teams trying to make it out of a series of four rooms, facing a variety of puzzles.
I may love watching Mad Men but covering it in the listings is a pain thanks to generic episode teasers like (I kid you not) "Don launches a new campaign," "Peggy ponders taking a trip" or "Pete encounters an interesting stranger.

I may love watching Mad Men but covering it in the listings is a pain thanks to generic episode teasers like (I kid you not) "Don launches a new campaign," "Peggy ponders taking a trip" or "Pete encounters an interesting stranger.

On TV this Thursday: A fancy fellow interrupts a New Girl date (on a special night), NBC serves up a first course of Hannibal, the Big Bang guys try for tenure and TBS’ Men get back to work. As a supplement to TVLine’s original features (linked within), here are 10 programs to keep on your radar.
8 pm The Big Bang Theory (CBS) | Regina King (Southland) is back as Mrs. Davis when Leonard, Sheldon and Raj fight for tenure – and the competition heats up when the girls get involved.
8 pm Community (NBC) | Susan B. Anthony was a pioneer for women’s suffrage.

Damn, Britta is more confused than usual on "Community" this week.
When she learns that Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) is planning a Sadie Hawkins dance, she plans her own competing bash -- a Sophie B. Hawkins dance. One small problem: Britta (Gillian Jacobs) has confused the singer with one of her feminist heroines, Susan B. Anthony.
Major humiliation looms until the dance itself -- HuffPost TV can exclusively reveal that Sophie B. Hawkins herself appears. There's no word at this time on whether Abed wishes he were her lover (or vice versa).
By the way, this is not the show's last flirtation with singers: pop star Sara Bareilles appears in next week's episode, along with "Seinfeld's" Jason Alexander, who'll play a "friendly mountain man," according to NBC.
"Community" airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. Et on NBC.

Before we get started here, let me just apologize if I lack pep. I've got whatever horrible illness is going around, and I'm NyQuil-ed to the gills. Side note: Did you know that if you turn off the sound to American Horror Story and play Sophie B. Hawkins's "As I Lay Me Down," the whole things syncs up perfectly? It's true. This wasn't my favorite episode. It didn't go full-bore insane, and it was falling all over itself to try to get things wrapped up for the finale, which meant flashing forward, then back, then forward, then back again in a way that would have wearied even the most Bakula of Scotts. Perhaps that's because we only have one more episode to go and lots of unanswered questions. Like, for instance, "What?" I got about four seconds into this episode before the first "Oh, come on," which I think...

Keeping up with the tradition of casting terrific, if not necessarily recognizable, guest stars, Community has tapped Brie Larson to be a part of its fourth season. Larson isn’t a household name just yet, but you’ll have at least seen her in action in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World or 21 Jump Street. She’s an adorable little thing, but she can pop a wallop – whether through intimidation or straight up sex appeal – when the situation calls for it. With flexibility like that, the kinds of comedic roles Larson can play are many. So what does Community have in store for its latest guest star?
As it stands, the answer to that question shall remain a mystery. TVLine reported Larson’s role is being kept tightly under wraps, something that isn’t normally Community’s style. What we do know is she will appear in Episode 7, which is set...

Get ready to welcome a new face to Greendale Community College: "United States of Tara" star Brie Larson will guest star in a "Community" Season 4 episode as ... a person. (No details on her character are available.)
According to TVLine, Larson's character is a big secret. The only thing we know thus far is that she'll appear in the seventh episode of the season, which revolves around Greendale's Dean Pelton-hosted Sadie Hawkins dance.
Photos: Must-see shows of Fall 2012
Britta protests the dance by hosting her own event,. Naturally she Brittas it when she makes the theme "Sophie B. Hawkins," thinking she's honoring women's rights activist Susan B. Anthony. Oops!
"Community" moves to its new night for the Season 4 premiere on Friday, Oct. 19 at 8:30 p.m. on NBC.

Good morning!
Out singer Sophie B. Hawkins is playing Janis Joplin in a new musical about her called Room 105: The Highs and Lows of Janice Joplin. Sophie's partner Gigi Gaston wrote the production, which is playing in Los Angeles all October. Apparently Janis' one-time girlfriend Peggy Caserta is coming to the show.
Lacey Turner told The Sun about how she wants her lesbian role in Switch to be believable.
It was really important to me to believe that Stella really is a lesbian. I didn’t want her to look like someone who is pretending to be gay. I’m not that way inclined and I’ve never felt the urge to kiss a girl so I did think about it and wonder what the scenes would be like. But...

Community has made another A+ hire.
The NBC comedy, which has already recruited James Brolin, Malcolm McDowell and Matt Lucas for Season 4 stints, has tapped the comically gifted Brie Larson (United States of Tara, 21 Jump Street) to guest star, TVLine has learned exclusively.
The actress will play… a character whose identity is being kept under lock and key. All we can confirm is that Larson will appear in this season’s seventh episode, which finds Dean Pelton planning a “Sadie Hawkins” dance at Greendale.

Word on the street is Russell Brand, who previously moved on from ex-wife Katy Perry with actress Jordana Brewster's younger sister Isabella, has found a new girl he's smitten with -- Ginger Spice, or Geri Halliwell.
The Sun reports that these two met at the Summer Olympics closing ceremony rehearsals -- where Geri reunited with the other Spice Girls and Russell Brand went all acid-trippy-Willy-Wonka-meets-Godspell -- and have been on several dates since.
A pal of Russell's says, "Things are getting very serious between them -- they're a proper couple now. They had met several times in the past, but really got to know each other during the Olympics. People thought Russell was joking at the time, when he said he had a crush on Geri all over again, but it was true. They just clicked -- they have so much in common."

Want to be Sophie B. Hawkins' lover? We suspect the fastest route to her heart may be to offer her the $3.265 million she and filmmaker Gigi Gaston want for their three-bedroom home in Venice.
Located in Venice, Calif. two blocks away from trendy Abbot Kinney, the two-story "Spanish Romantica" home boasts distinctive details like hand-carved mesquite doors, reclaimed wood floors and a hand-carved marble fireplace. But the most impressive features of the house are the result of the collaboration between Gaston, Hawkins and a local Venice architect.
To accommodate Hawkins' career, the home's three-car garage was converted into a professional recording studio. And in a nod to Gaston's upbringing (she is the daughter of J. Paul Getty's fifth and final wife of 19 years, Louise Dudley Lynch), the home features "museum quality elements" like kitchen tiles inspired by Claude Monet's blue kitchen in Giverny, France and a hand-painted fireplace from one of J.

New Year's Eve: It's either a time to celebrate renewal and the hope that comes with a new year, or a time to gripe about "Amateur Hour" as you dodge puddles of alcohol-induced puke on the sidewalk. We're guessing the upcoming ensemble rom-com "New Year's Eve" from director Gary Marshall ("Valentine's Day") is going to be taking the former route rather than the latter, so it stands to reason that the soundtrack would be stocked full of uplifting party anthems that would fit right in on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. And so it is.
Most of the music here is licensed, so you'll have heard it before - P!nk's ubiquitous "Raise Your Glass" retains its pop charms, although we're wondering if it'll fully have worn out its welcome by the time Dec. 31 rolls around. We also get a visit from the Goo Goo Dolls (remember them?...

Whether it's creepers getting down under the mistletoe or trying to catch a cab home with a case of the champagne hiccups, New Year's Eve has the tendency to be a bit of a s#!tshow.
Even if the soundtrack for your evening ends up being the sound of drunken revelry, you can still have a perfect holiday, thanks to Garry Marshall's upcoming comedy "New Year's Eve," the soundtrack listings for which were announced today.
The movie, which stars Halle Berry, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Biel, Hilary Swank, Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jon Bon Jovi, Zac Efron, Josh Duhamel, Jon Bon Jovi, Katherine Heigl and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, to name a few, has an equally star-studded soundtrack featuring some of the film's stars, much like Marshall's 2010 ensemble comedy "Valentine's Day."

You know what the music world really needs now? Sophie B. Hawkins. The singer-songwriter had an incredible run in the early '90s, doling out sharp, melodic folk rock from a uniquely feminine perspective years before Sarah McLachlan conceived of the Lilith Fair. Hawkins' 1992 debut album Tongues and Tails put her on the map, and her 1994 follow-up Whaler — which was released on this day in 1994 — made her into a superstar.
Hawkins' approach to music was really to have no approach at all. After spending time studying the percussion of other cultures, starting jazz combos and playing in a punk band or two, she brought together all those elements into her music, often with jarring results (there's a song on Tongues and Tails called "Carry Me" — a rant about her mother — that suddenly bursts into feedback at the end). Despite the radio-friendliness of "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover," Tongues and Tails was weird.
