Rick “Shecky” Scheckman, who for more than 30 years came up with oddball footage for David Letterman’s late-night programs while also finding his way on camera for wacky comedy bits, has died. He was 67.
Scheckman had “multiple health issues” and died early Friday morning at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, his friend Leonard Maltin told The Hollywood Reporter.
The Queens native was an avid film collector who had acquired obscure footage from decades and decades of celluloid that could be repurposed for commercials, TV shows and the like.
“This meant organizing and cataloging hundreds upon hundreds of 16mm reels and figuring out a way to provide quick access to individual shots,” Maltin noted in a blog post.
Scheckman joined Late Night With David Letterman in March 1982, a month after the show debuted on NBC. The writers called on Scheckman so often, he was given a full-time job as film coordinator.

Austin-based audio and visual post-production company Stuck On On worked on six films set to screen at SXSW 2013:
Matthew McConaughey-fronted Mud (Debbie's review)Local filmmakers Richard Linklater's Before Midnight (Debbie's review)Emily Hagins' feature Grow Up, Tony PhillipsFormer Afs Artist Services Director Bryan Poyser's The Bounceback (Elizabeth's interview)Pj Raval's documentary Before You Know ItKatie Graham and Andrew Matthews' Austin-shot movie Zero Charisma
The record-setting year marks the award-winning company's five-year anniversary, when founders Lyman Hardy, Parke Gregg and Allison Turrell (along with a silent partner) opened its doors in the Eastside with the mission to support and solidify Texas film's street cred. Before Stuck On On was a company, it was an experience Hardy had with a dining-room chandelier that refused to turn off.
And Turrell was stuck on post production after studying video art as a graduate student. She...

Well, it seems like there's a lot of changes coming to 'The Tonight Show' when Jay Leno returns after the Olympics. Yesterday Kona told you that bandleader Kevin Eubanks would be leaving the show once they find a replacement, and now we hear from Variety that announcer John Melendez won't be back.
But I'm not sure why this is news. Unlike Eubanks, Melendez wasn't the announcer of the 10Pm show -- he was retained as a writer for the show -- so I didn't really automatically expect Melendez to be back when Leno returns to 11:35. Of course, a lot of TV fans didn't think about it one way or another, but it's certainly not surprising news. Melendez will stay on as a writer.
Honestly, Melendez shouldn't have been Leno's announcer in the first place (well, in the "first place" he wasn't - Edd Hall was). He's a bland announcer,...

I think we can all agree that Jay Leno's hiring of ex-Howard Stern sidekick John Melendez to replace Leno's original announcer Edd Hall was one of the stupidest, most odd decisions in Tonight Show history, right? (Right?) So I wasn't surprised to hear Hall's voice on one of the comedy bits that Letterman used to insult Leno earlier this week. But why did Hall do it?
You can probably guess the answer. He says that he even though he likes both Leno and Letterman, he "doesn't feel any allegiance to Jay" and he "never left on bad terms with Letterman." Hall started his career on Letterman's old Late Night show at NBC. He says that no one at Leno's show has called him about what's going on in the late show wars and that he didn't do it to "get" Jay, he just thought it was a funny comedy bit.

Ok, so it's from David Letterman, but still, it's a promo! Letterman ran this last night.
What I love about it is not only how they point out what Leno took from other shows for The Tonight Show, but they got ex-Tonight Show announcer Edd Hall to do the voiceover!
