Amid a very busy week of Oscar events, Sean Penn’s relief organization Core took a moment to shift the focus from toasting this year’s top films to raising money for ongoing crises around the world.
At Core’s Pre-Oscars Benefit on Tuesday — sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter and Dodge — $1.4 million was raised to finance the group’s humanitarian work, with support from a star-studded group of attendees. Penn, Core CEO Ann Lee and CAA’s Bryan Lourd (who is both Penn’s agent and a Core board member) co-hosted the event, held at a private residence in Laurel Canyon, while Bill Burr served as the night’s emcee.
“This is such a wonderful organization — I’ve done so many benefits in my stand-up career where the charity was B.S., like 10 percent of 10 percent went to something,” Burr told guests at the beginning of the night. “This is actually...

Don’t ever assault a possible witch, light her house on fire, dig up her Pet Semetary backyard and use the vial of blood you found next to her book of the dead to resurrect the town monster, K? Equally, don’t ever watch Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings right after watching the original Pumpkinhead. It’s not meant to happen that way.
Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings forgoes the typical sequel that actually tries to live up to its predecessor and goes straight for the fourth-to-seventh sequel package. It does not pass go nor collect $200 but rather heads straight to video and parks its barely running, smoke engulfed 1993 Ford truck on Camp Avenue. Many hate it for that reason. I understand.
I also happen to enjoy the ever lovin’ shit out of it.

Pharmaceutical giant Gsk is going to dramatic lengths to get consumers thinking about the challenges of Meningitis B.
Rather than pepper Lifetime’s TV schedule with traditional ads about the disease, Gsk has commissioned a short film on the subject, in which actor Soleil Moon Frye talks to parents and experts. Her efforts will show up in a three-minute vignette that appears during certain Lifetime movies; a 17-minute film made available via a bespoke digital site; and in “snackable” lengths via social and other venues. Melissa Joan Hart, who was, like Frye, a popular child actor and is a regular in Lifetime’s movies, will also appear in the vignettes, which will appear on digital outlets first and then on the cable network starting June 25.
“This isn’t a manufactured moment,” says Maura O’Donovan, vice president of ad sales partnerships at A+E Networks, in an interview. “It really is something that is authentic.

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the ambitious small screen project “Roger Corman Presents,” which aired from 1995 through 1999 on Showtime.
Not many remember this, but back in the nineties, the cable network Showtime was extremely centered on science fiction and horror genre fare. They were the original launch pads for “Stargate Sg-1” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy” before they became syndication mainstays. Hell, even their marketing was catered to the science fiction and horror aesthetic.
Like Cinemax, Showtime sought to work out distribution deals while releasing their own original films for primetime and late night slots. While Cinemax and HBO worked with Stan Winston, Showtime collaborated with the one and only Roger Corman. With him and his studio Concorde Pictures, they would produce a series of low budget films that would air over the course of two seasons. With the banner “Roger Corman Presents,” Corman and company...

It’s a great time to love vintage TV. Not only can you stream almost every show, but a lot of the great shows are back with their original casts. Fuller House sort of started the ball rolling with other ‘80s and ‘90s TV sitcoms looking for a revival.
L-r: Kapil Talwalkar, Melissa Rauch, John Larroquette, India de Beaufort, and Lacretta | Jordin Althaus/NBC
While fans of any show would consider their revival the best, Showbiz Cheat Sheet tried to take a more objective view. Here are the five best sitcom revivals, with an honorable mention for Night Court because it only has one original cast member but still follows the format successfully.

“Is It future? Or is it past?”
When the One-Armed Man Mike (Al Strobel) posed that question to Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) in the second part of Twin Peaks: The Return, he may very well have been echoing the thoughts of the viewers. After all, Mike asked that question while sitting in the Red Room, the interdimensional waiting room that became the signature location during the original two-season run of Twin Peaks, and the 1992 prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. In fact, Cooper wore the exact same suit and tie combo, and sat in the same chair from the original series.
Before Cooper could answer, Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) entered the room, decked in the same black dress that she wore in the season two finale. Although MacLachlan and Lee had both clearly aged in the two and...

The show that taught 1980s kids not to hide in an abandoned old refrigerator — or, at the very least, learn CPR in case one of your friends does sneak into one of those scary old latch iceboxes — will not continue with its revival. The updated “Punky Brewster,” which Peacock brought back as part of the streamer’s first-year lineup, will not be renewed for more episodes.
Peacock debuted all 10 episodes of the new “Punky Brewster,” featuring original star Soleil Moon Frye (who also served as an executive producer), on Feb. 25. The show reunited Frye as Punky with her old friend Cherie (Cherie Johnson), and updated her story to focus on Punky raising her three kids after separating from her husband (Freddie Prinze Jr.). A photographer like her foster dad Henry in the original series, Punky brings a foster child, Izzy (Quinn Copeland), into her home.

Even Val Kilmer doesn’t consider the movie he produced about his life to be a documentary.
“Val,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this month and begins streaming on Amazon Prime Video Aug. 6, traces his career from his “Top Gun” breakthrough to recent health struggles, incorporating footage from Kilmer’s vast personal archive into the film. His son, Jack, also an actor, supplements his father’s narration, the elder Kilmer’s voice virtually unrecognizable from his heyday as a performer due to treatment for throat cancer.
“Val would say in relation to this film that we are not making a documentary; we’re making a Val Kilmer movie where he’s playing himself as Val Kilmer,” co-director Leo Scott says.
However you classify “Val” — Cannes labeled it a documentary — it is the latest in a series of films self-produced by their star subjects that, to some, raise questions...

Linda Perry has written songs for the biggest names in music, from Pink to Christina Aguilera. Now, the singer/songwriter is ready to transition into a new musical medium: that of film and TV scoring. Perry came out of the gate swinging, composing the soundtracks for both Soleil Moon Frye’s new Hulu documentary “Kid 90” — which you can exclusively listen to in its entirety below — and Don Hardy’s 2020 documentary about Sean Penn’s work in Haiti, “Citizen Penn.”
Perry said film composition is something she’s always wanted to do, especially as music and visuals go hand-in-hand for her. “It’s my organic next chapter, it’s very obvious that I was going to go in this direction,” she told IndieWire.
Perry is a chameleon, able to change to suit the marketplace. When her career as a performer — most famously for the band 4 Non-Blondes — subsided, she took up songwriting.

Linda Perry may have been writing hits for Adele, Christina Aguilera, and Pink, but it’s been over a decade since the former 4 Non Blondes front woman has released original music that she sang herself. “The Letter” is a deeply moving song that she wrote for the soundtrack of Soleil Moon Frye’s new Hulu documentary, Kid 90. The doc also includes snippets of home movie footage featuring Perry’s wife Sara Gilbert, who’s a friend of the Punky Brewster child star and was starring in Roseanne at the time.

Soleil Moon Frye has been a staple on our television screens for the last thirty years plus years. The young actress would steal American hearts as Punky Brewster, which aired on NBC from 1984 to 1986. The show would spawn a cartoon called It’s Punky Brewster and aired right around the same time as Punky Brewster stardom. You might ask yourself or your friends, whatever happened to that girl that played Punky Brewster? Well, Punky Brewster herself has all those answers and much more in the film Kid 90, which she also directed. My wife and I sat down a week ago and watched Kid A. I was instantly hooked in on the film because I recognized an Eddie Vedder song during the opening. Not only does Soleil have great taste in music, but she was also a little J. Edgar Hoover because she filmed and documented her life for years and years.

Hey… there’s a reason I run this website and that fascination began in the 90s and continues to this day (thank god for digital formats though – can you imagine how big my tape collection would be today?!). So when I saw...

Photo: ‘Kid 90’ - Will Smith and Mark Wahlberg/Hulu Many of us have tried to keep a diary at various points in our lives, probably quitting after a few days--Soleil Moon Frye evidently never had this problem. The former child star, known for her leading titular role in the ‘80s sitcom ‘Punky Brewster’, meticulously recorded and preserved not only all of her written childhood diary entries but also her voicemails and camcorder footage that she shot candidly throughout her adolescence in the 1990s--20 years later, she’s assembled this priceless archival treasure trove in her new Hulu documentary ‘Kid 90’. The title, of course, refers to the fact that Moon Frye didn’t grow up in your typical American household--she came of age amid the ‘90s Hollywood child actor bubble. Thus, ‘Kid 90’ promises to not only be exploitation of nostalgia, but also to examine the lifestyle and...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on The Eddie Volkman Show on Wssr-fm on March 12th, 2021, reviewing the new documentary “Kid 90,” streaming on Hulu beginning on Friday, March 12th.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Remember Soleil Moon Frye? She was the child actor who brought the character “Punky Brewster” to life in that late 1980s sitcom. After the series ended, and through her teenage years in the 1990s (thus “Kid 90”), she had an ever-present camcorder that chronicled her life in that decade … and the lives of her fellow kid actors like Stephen Dorff, Heather McComb, David Arquette, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark-Paul Gosselaer. The documentary is a look back at the footage, and the up/down lives associated with it.
“Kid 90” is available to stream on Hulu beginning March 12th. Featuring Soleil Moon Frye, Stephen Dorff, Heather McComb, David Arquette, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark-Paul Gosselaer. Rated “TV-ma”

Another week, another step toward the world as we knew it before Covid-19, thanks to nationwide vaccination efforts and the gradual reopening of theaters. A week after New York cinemas cautiously reopened, Los Angeles plans to do the same, and distributors are serving up movies they’d kept on the sidelines to serve the venues that have suffered so greatly this past year — although after last week’s deluge, this one brings a pretty meager menu of new releases.
Perhaps most tantalizing is Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Human Voice,” starring Tilda Swinton. Sony Pictures Classics is releasing the 30-minute short film, which debuted at the Venice Film Festival (one of 2020’s few in-person events), in just a handful of theaters, along with a fresh restoration of the Spanish master’s “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.” That means audiences can come just for a short, social-distanced experience (ducking...
