There were many memorable cinematic performances that came from actresses in 1999 (Annette Bening in American Beauty, Samantha Morton in Sweet and Lowdown, Julianne Moore in Magnolia). And then there was a truly iconic turn from Reese Witherspoon as Tracy Flick, the terrifying antagonist in Alexander Payne’s sharp political satire, Election.
A cunning, ambitious and oh-so-annoying foil to her teacher and would-be mentor, Omaha-area social studies instructor Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick), Tracy is at times the worst — for example, when her affair with Mr. McAllister’s best friend is discovered, the teenager has no qualms about abandoning him entirely — and in other moments, Tracy can be the absolute best. At least, she insists on that top slot, no matter what: having the highest grades, getting into the best college, winning a high school election — she’s destined for greatness, which in the time Election takes place means winning the office...

The Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) is celebrating the cinematic contributions of Oscar winner Alexander Payne, including his latest film, “The Holdovers.”
The Queens-based MoMI is curating a special Payne retrospective, culminating in a screening of “The Holdovers” with Payne in attendance on January 10. The exhibit kicks off January 5 with Payne’s feature debut “Citizen Ruth,” which was released in 1996. The independent dark comedy stars Laura Dern as a pregnant woman being used on opposing ends of the abortion debate.
“Alexander Payne has always put this country’s cultural, political, and emotional realities under a microscope — while never forgetting to also make viewers laugh,” the official MoMI press statement reads. “This rare talent, coupled with an enormous skill directing actors, many of whom give career performances under his watchful eye, has carried him through all his films, psychologically acute and often poignant inquiries into the lives of taciturn American...

The age of 38 is too young, as many people might agree, but the idea is that no one wants to see a person go before their time. Jessica Campbell, actress, and mother, passed away back in late December according to her family. But it’s believed at this point that it was not Covid related. The idea that anyone has to say this at all is kind of concerning since so many deaths are still being attributed to the coronavirus, but from the sound of things, Jessica had been doing fine on the day she passed and had been visiting

In times of political malfeasance, when corruption and self-aggrandizement is the rule of law, political satire can be a tonic or a depressant, but either way necessary. And it seems to me Alexander Payne’s Election (available from Criterion in a beautiful Blu-ray package), is a bracing intellectual tonic pitched perfectly, even though it was made almost 20 years ago, for the era of our current presidential, and perhaps our upcoming constitutional crisis. And though she is front and center and the spark that ignites it, the movie’s tart brilliance and no-holds-barred charge goes beyond Reese Witherspoon’s inspired and fearless performance. Election is, I think, a genuinely great American movie, powered of course by the Little Engine That Could, Witherspoon’s Tracy Flick, but also by a so-far career-best efforts from co-writer-director Alexander Payne (maddeningly inconsistent to date), with a profound assist from his editor, Kevin Tent; and Matthew Broderick,...

Reese Witherspoon’s ruthless go-getter remains fascinatingly toxic in Alexander Payne’s bleak and biting political comedy
There’s a big M Night Shyamalan twist in the final minutes of Election, Alexander Payne’s searing 1999 high school satire. Tracy Flick, the irritating overachiever indelibly played by a breakout Reese Witherspoon, is a Republican.
Throughout the film, Payne prefers to think about politics in the abstract, as an illusory choice between interchangeable versions of the same bullshit. Odious civics teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) explains democracy as having the option to select either an apple or an orange, represented with two identical circles on his chalkboard. The closest thing that this comedy of bad morals has to a hero is Tammy Metzler (Jessica Campbell), who galvanizes the student body with a promise to dissolve the school government in toto if elected class president.

We’ve all met Tracy Flick — the eager-beaver student that charms the right teachers, wins all the awards and corners the big scholarships. Alexander Payne’s witty, perceptive look at High School shows the predicament of a model teacher who can’t help but sabotage a pupil’s run for class president. Reese Witherspoon’s wholly original characterization scores big, and Matthew Broderick plays what is probably his best screen role.

Hey there! Please vote. Votey votey vote.
Now that you've voted, let's remember something important: There is nothing more depressing than a movie that wants to convey the melodrama of high school and fails. I hate, hate, hate bad high school movies. Every time I watch one, it feels like a lazy distortion or an insult to my own high school memories, of which I'm very protective. Is it really that hard to write about high school as something more than a popularity contest? I'm asking you, the screenwriter of She's All That. Because I think of ages 14-18 as a time of great self-realization, self-definition, and fun. There are spurts of trauma too, but the idea that high schools are divided squarely into winners and losers is bizarre and dumb. One movie that gets it right is Election, Alexander Payne's 1999 satire that centers around a student council election,...
Now that the Presidential debates have wrapped up for the 2012 election, Time has compiled a list of the ten best debate scenes in film history. Included in the comedy-heavy list are Woody Allen's Fellini rant in "Annie Hall," Alicia Silverstone's gum-popping Haitian refugee speech in "Clueless" and Reese Witherspoon's brittle overachiever Tracy Flick opposite slacker Jessica Campbell in "Election." Full list below, along with a few clips. What debate scenes has Time left out that should be added to the list? 1. Tim Robbins opposite Gore Vidal in "Bob Roberts" 2. Denzel Washington's Wiley College debaters opposite the all-white Harvard team in "The Great Debaters" 3. Will Ferrell's Frank the Tank opposite Jeremy Piven in "Old School" 4. Robert Redford as Bill McKay in "The Candidate" 5. Alicia Silverstone's Cher expounding on Haitian refugees in...

While the show only lasted a season (although ratings were enough that, were it on today, it would be a big hit), so much of what's proved successful in the comedy world in the last decade can be traced back to " Freaks & Geeks." Executive produced by Judd Apatow, who's been behind many of the most successful comedies in recent years, from "Anchorman" to the upcoming "The Five-Year Engagement," and created by Paul Feig, who reunited with Apatow for last year's smash hit "Bridesmaids," it followed a group of nerds and burnouts in a Michigan high school.
And looking back, the cast is a who's who of the people that have made you laugh in recent years: James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Martin Starr, Samm Levine and Busy Phillips were all in the original cast, along with Linda Cardellini, while her screen brother John Francis Daley wrote the screenplay for...

Considering it's where most of us (bar the weird home-schooled kids) spend our crucial formative years, where we have our first fights, our first loves, our first tentative steps into adulthood, it's no surprise that high school has long been a popular setting for movies. A range of genres (though generally leaning towards comedy) have taken place in those hallways, particularly from the 1980s onwards, when John Hughes, among others, made an entire career out of the lives and loves of 15-18 year olds.
The latest film to head back to class is "21 Jump Street" (review here) the big-screen reboot of the '80s TV show, which stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as youthful-looking cops who are sent back to high school in order to bust a drug-running ring. While you might assume this to be another lazy remake, you'd be very wrong, as Tatum, Hill, co-writer Michael Bacall,...

According to various sources, Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter who penned the script for Twilight, has been hired by Marvel to write and produce a TV show based on the character of Jessica Jones:
Jessica Campbell Jones Cage is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics universe, created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos. Jones debuted in the series Alias as an embittered former superheroine who had used the aliases Jewel and Knightress. After hanging up her costume, she became the owner and sole employee of Alias Private Investigations.
Tilted Aka Jessica Jones, the series will run on ABC and is fully expected to be the first official Marvel project to appear on the network. Jeph Loeb and Joe Quesada will share producing duties with Rosenberg while Jessica Jones creator Brian Michael Bendis will take on the role of script consultant.

Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight screenwriter) is reportedly writing and executive producing a TV series based on Marvel superhero Jessica Jones.
I’m no comic book geek, so I’m not at all familiar with the character, and thus had to look her up. Feel free to do the same; Wikipedia was my main source.
One item of note for Jessica Jones is that, she’s later known as Jessica Campbell Jones Cage. The last name should give you a hint as to where I’m going with this, especially if you’re a follower of the Marvel universe.
You see, Jessica Jones eventually marries Luke Cage, the African American superhero, also a Marvel character. The couple had a daughter as well.
Jessica Jones is Caucasian by the way. At least, I didn’t find anything that led me to believe otherwise.
And so my main interest here is whether we can...

"Freaks and Geeks" is now airing on IFC, and we thought we'd take this opportunity to revisit the show that launched a thousand bromance movies. Every week, Matt Singer and Alison Willmore will be offering their thoughts on that night's episode.
Episode 17
The Little Things
Teleplay by Jon Kasdan
Story by Jon Kasdan & Judd Apatow & Mike White
Directed by Jake Kasdan
"You know what all my protesting accomplished in the '60s at Berkeley? 16 scars on my head from a teargas canister." -- Mr. Rosso
Three storylines run through "The Little Things": the impending arrival of Vice President George H.W. Bush at McKinley (and the possibility that Lindsay might get to ask him a question), Sam's growing dissatisfaction with his relationship with Cindy Sanders, and the revelation that Ken's girlfriend Amy (Jessica Campbell) was born with both male and female genitalia. They seem like vastly different subjects for a single episode,...

Alexander Payne, 1999
Election was a novel before it was a film, but Tom Perrotta only got a publisher after film-maker Payne read Election and optioned it. In Payne's hands, Election transcended its roots as the sharply observed tale of a high-school president contest, to become an allegory for American politics, in which the sharp-elbowed battle the stupid and manipulated.
Like Payne's later films, About Schmidt and Sideways, this centres on the great sadness at the heart of a man. In this case it's Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick), a high-school teacher unhappy in his marriage, whose hatred of the overachieving pupil Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon) is such that he persuades the class jock Paul Metzler (Chris Klein) to run against her for the school presidency. McAllister then becomes so deeply embroiled in the race that he tries to fix the vote. Witherspoon has never been better, and Broderick, puffy and harassed,...

Directed by Bryan Gordon
"You'll never be friends. Maybe in, like, two years, but you're never really going to be friends again until Nick gets another girlfriend, and then you're just going to want him back, and then this whole thing's going to start over again." -- Kim
Alison: Romantic concerns rule this episode of "Freaks & Geeks," which offers a spectrum of relationships starting, progressing and ending. There's Ken's crush on "tuba girl" Amy (Jessica Campbell, best known as Tammy "Who cares about this stupid election?"
