It’s time for some “CSI: Nielsen Ratings.”
CBS is set to win the 2023-24 season as the most-watched network — again — it’s now been 16 straight seasons of the same. CBS has now broken broadcast television’s longest winning streak on record, which was also CBS: From 1955 to 1970, when “Gunsmoke,” “The Andy Griffith Show,” and (some of) “I Love Lucy” ruled its airwaves.
Fast-forward 50 years to the current TV season, which runs from fall (September) through spring (May), and CBS has won 21 of the past 22 years. CBS is also poised to win the season among adults 18-49, long-considered the key demographic for advertisers, as well as its own target market, viewers 25-54. It is also number 1 this year among 18-34-year-olds; Super Bowl Lviii sure helped CBS pull those victories out of its football helmet.

What hath Disney wrought? These animated-to-live-action conversion jobs really have gotten out hand. How else to explain Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum snatching the leads in a new take on the 2007 3D animated adventure about insects going into orbi… Sorry, we're being told that this is not that, but instead a new comedy-drama about promoting NASA by, er, faking the Moon landing in case it doesn't go well? Yes, check out the first trailer for Fly Me To The Moon:
Directed by TV guru Greg Berlanti (who at one point had around 73 different shows on the air at the height of the DC Arrowverse) from Rose Gilroy's script, it's set as NASA is looking to re-engage public awareness and excitement via the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Launch director Cole Davis (Tatum) is surprised to learn that the woman he once hit on in a diner (Johansson's Kelly Jones) is...

On the morning of July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins sat atop another Saturn V at Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center. The three-stage 363-foot rocket used its 7.5 million pounds of thrust to propel them into space and into history.
On July 20, 1969, at 10:56 p.m. Edt, Armstrong planted the first human foot on another world. With more than half a billion people watching on television, he climbed down the ladder and proclaimed: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
And now some 55 years later, NASA is preparing to send people back to the lunar surface. Scheduled for September 2025, the Artemis II flight test will be NASA’s first mission with crew under Artemis and will pave the way to land the first woman and next man on the Moon on Artemis III. Exclusive: The Fall of the House of Usher standout Willa Fitzgerald and The Continental star Colin Woodell have been tapped as the leads of Pulse, Netflix’s first original medical procedural. They join previously cast Justina Machado in the drama series from first-time creator Zoe Robyn who serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside veteran Carlton Cuse.
In Pulse, while the staff of Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center navigate medical emergencies, young ER doc Danny Simms (Fitzgerald) is unexpectedly promoted to Chief Resident amidst the fallout of her own provocative romantic relationship.
When we meet her, Fitzgerald’s Danielle “Danny” Simms is a 3rd year resident in Emergency Medicine at Maguire Hospital in Miami. While her deep empathy makes her an exceptional doctor in training, her brash and self-sabotaging nature disrupts her personal and professional life.

The caper or heist film is one of the sub-genres of action that has a lot to offer thematically and stylistically if done correctly. If we think back to “To Catch a Thief” or even the “Oceans”-series, the world these stories show are a reflection of a society based on materialism and property, with the thieves sharing the same obsession as the owners of the object they want to steal. On the other hand, given its potential to be an ensemble piece, the caper/heist feature also offers actors the chance to shine. Steve Yuen's “The Moon Thieves”, the director's third feature, tries to combine the two aspects of the genre, but fails to offer some depth to its otherwise intriguing premise.

Three members of Hong Kong Cantopop band Mirror feature in this fiendishly watchable crime caper which steals much from Ocean’s Eleven and, oddly, Asmr videos
Here is a very silly and yet fiendishly watchable heist thriller that features three members – Edan Lui, Anson Lo and Keung To – of the Hong Kong Cantopop boyband Mirror in major roles. That’s worth knowing not because they break into song at any point, but because that explains the film’s prepackaged feel and why at least one of the actors, Keung To, feels so weirdly miscast as a ruthless gangster. But as with much of the plot mechanics in this film, it’s best not to think too much and just roll with punches.

Sunday’s Super Bowl drew 123.4 million viewers across CBS and Paramount+, according to preliminary numbers. That’s the most for any broadcast since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the Moon on July 20, 1969, and the most-watched non-news telecast of all time.
Nielsen says the total number of viewers who watched any part of Super Bowl Lviii was 202.4 million, up from 2023’s 184 million.
The game was a good one — especially late — and that is the single most-important factor for a major sporting event to drive TV ratings. And yes, Taylor Swift certainly helped too.
The Kansas City Chiefs came from behind to defeat the San Francisco 49ers in overtime, 25-22. The game, which had been 10-3 in favor of the Niners at halftime, ended on a walk-off touchdown toss from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes to wide receiver Mecole Hardman. Prince Harry paid tribute to his mother Princess Diana on Friday night as he collected his ‘living legend of aviation’ award from John Travolta.
The Daily Mail reports that Harry, being recognised for his work as a helicopter pilot and gunner in the British Army, took to the stage at the Beverly Hills Hilton, where he spoke to Travolta of the actor’s famous dance with his mother at the White House in 1985.
Harry said: “I was just a one-year-old when you danced with my mum at the White House and now look at us.”
Travolta also remembered the famous occasion, saying: “Now I see you again under a new circumstance, on a new stage.”
Harry added: ‘The only thing left to do is… not dance together but fly together.’
Harry served for 10 years in the military, rising to the rank of Captain, and later founded the Invictus Games for wounded military personnel and veterans.

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, is set to receive the esteemed title of a “living legend” of aviation and join the ranks of notable figures such as astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong.
Prince Harry will be inducted into the prestigious group on January 19 at a ceremony in Beverly Hills hosted by John Travolta. The Living Legends of Aviation was established in 2003 to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the aviation and aerospace industries. Other aviation and aerospace icons include Jeff Bezos, Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Elon Musk and Saudi Prince Sultan bin Salman Al Saud.
Prince Harry’s recognition stems from his career as an Apache helicopter pilot in the British military. He served in Afghanistan from 2012 to 2013, where he undertook combat missions. Over his ten-year tenure in the military, Prince Harry also flew training missions in the United Kingdom, United States and Australia.

“One more time: animation is a medium, not a genre. Animation is film,” Guillermo del Toro said last year. IndieWire couldn’t agree more, and yet animation — an art form that requires the most precise control of the cinematic medium — is continually disrespected.
Infamously, 2022’s Best Animated Oscars presentation featured several jokes about the nominees that, in the words of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, framed “the five Academy Award nominees for Best Animated Feature as a corporate product for kids that parents must begrudgingly endure.” The directing duo called upon the Academy to do better by animation. And this year’s ceremony largely delivered, with less jokes that belittled animation as kiddy stuff and a sterling speech from del Toro himself for his acclaimed stop-motion feature adaptation of “Pinocchio.”
Pixar and Studio Ghibli tend to spring to mind first when discussing great animation, but there’s a world beyond those two giants.

Panned by critics and hailed by audiences as one of the greatest horror films ever made, William Friedkin's "The Exorcist" is a classic that always finds its way onto the screens of viewers during Halloween season. The 1973 film, based on the 1971 novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty, centers on mother Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), who is desperate for answers after her seemingly normal daughter, Regan, begins to act strangely after interacting with a Ouija board in their rented home. After an attempt to contact a spirit named "Captain Howdy," Regan's physical, mental, and emotional state begins to decline severely and quickly, and she becomes possessed. Overwhelmed with her daughter's aggressive persona and superhuman strength, Chris enlists the help of two priests to expel the demon from Regan before it kills her.
At the time of its release, "The Exorcist" was considered by many to be the scariest movie in film history.

Sacha Baron Cohen is reportedly set to revive one of his most beloved characters for an upcoming live comedy tour.
Variety reports that the “Borat” star is in the midst of putting together a new standup tour, part of which will feature Ali G, the dim-witted London rapper whose absurd interview questions frustrated and flummoxed the likes of astronaut Buzz Aldrin, late “60 Minutes” curmudgeon Andy Rooney, and Victoria and David Beckham.
A source close to Cohen, however, denied rumours that Cohen was working on a new movie, as he’s ceased all film and TV-related work in accordance with the ongoing actors’ and writers’ strikes. “As a SAG and WGA member he is supporting the ongoing strike alongside his fellow writers and actors,” the source told Variety.

Sacha Baron Cohen is dusting off his beloved character Ali G, Deadline has confirmed.
Cohen’s reprisal of one of his most famous satirical characters will come not via any new film or TV project in development, but rather as part of a stand-up tour that he’s been planning. More concrete details as to how Ali G will figure into his routine, or with regard to tour dates, haven’t yet been disclosed.
First introduced 25 years ago on Channel 4’s The 11 O’Clock Show, Ali G is one of several personas Cohen has adopted to conduct absurdist interviews with public figures ranging from astronaut Buzz Aldrin to football player David Beckham, musician Jarvis Cocker and politician Newt Gingrich. Cohen brought the biggest spotlight onto the character via the sketch series Da Ali G Show, which came to HBO from Channel 4 for its final two seasons, at the same...

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "The Last of Us" and the video game series of the same name.
Early on in "The Last of Us" season 1, episode 6, "Kin," Ellie (Bella Ramsey) shares a hypothetical around the campfire: If her blood is successfully reverse-engineered into a cure, and she and Joel (Pedro Pascal) are free to do whatever they want, "Then what?" What are their dreams and ambitions in a world without the infected? Joel fantasizes about owning a farmhouse and herding sheep, and Ellie looks up to the stars. As a teenager who's been trapped behind Quarantine Zone walls her entire life, she's always wondered what it would be like to explore the cosmos as an astronaut.
In addition to paying tribute to Joel and Ellie's voice actors, this scene serves as a slight alteration of a similar one from the original 2013 video game. In the show, however, we...

This post contains mild spoilers for episode 6 of "The Last of Us."
There are two quiet, existential scenes shared between Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) that parallel each other at the beginning and final moments of "The Last of Us" episode 6. Right before running into Tommy (Gabriel Luna) at the Jackson Commune, our loveable duo sit underneath the stars and talk about their dreams and ambitions. Ellie begins to wonder, "then what?" Hypothetically, if the Fireflies are able to make a cure from her blood, what do they do next? If they can cure society and become free to do or be anything, what would it be?
Off the cuff, Joel answers that he'd get an old farmhouse and herd sheep. "They're quiet and do what they're told" he quips. When it's time for Ellie to share, she looks up to the stars and gushes about the spectacle of outer space.

Bryan Cranston may be best known to fans as a meth/PopCorners kingpin. Still, he is now expressing interest in playing one of the greatest marijuana proponents ever, Willie Nelson.
When asked by NME if there was a musician he would like to play, Bryan Cranston said, “Willie Nelson comes to mind. The hair and the beard. I think there’s some physical resemblance. He’s very old and wrinkled, and I can relate to that…So I wouldn’t have to wear a lot of makeup.” Surely the 66-year-old Cranston looks a little better than the 89-year-old Nelson!
Bryan Cranston added there is a lot to admire about Shotgun Willie, although the actor doesn’t exactly share every defining trait with the singer. “Willie’s had a fascinating career—as a writer and as a performer, and as a free speech person, being anti-war and on the forefront of...

Director Asif Kapadia makes slick work of Akram Khan’s ballet in Creature, which world premiered at the BFI London Film Festival. Based on Khan’s original concept and choreography, the English National Ballet Production is produced by Uzma Hasan for Little House Productions, and brings an intense cinematic sensibility to the bleak story exploring power, nature, connection and more.
Taking center stage as the Creature is the extraordinary Jeffrey Cirio, who went on to star in the stage production which was delayed due to the pandemic. He twists and slinks across the set with a performance that’s both animalistic and tenderly humane. The setting is a former Arctic research station, where Creature has been brought to be experimented upon by a Doctor (Stina Quagebeur). A cleaner, Marie (Erina Takahashi), catches his eye, and also that of the Major (Fabian Reimair), a stern presence in a swooshing military coat.

Hit CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory faded from the broadcast TV universe in May 2019, but lives on in fans’ hearts and minds (and in prequel series Young Sheldon). It made stars out of Jim Parsons, Simon Helberg, and Kunal Nayar and added to Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki’s sitcom résumés, but just as imporant, the show — which premiered 15 years ago, on September 24, 2007 — gave dozens more stars a chance to play themselves. For instance, Ellen DeGeneres, Nathan Fillion, and Sarah Michelle Gellar had cameos on The Big Bang Theory. And plenty of sci-fi stars teleported onto set, including Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, James Earl Jones, Katee Sackhoff, William Shatner, and George Takei. But we’re here to talk about the nerdiest of the guest-stars — less science fiction, and more science nonfiction, if you will. Scroll down to see our picks in action. As Trekkies around the world mourn and reflect on the legacy of “Star Trek” icon Nichelle Nichols, those who have actually traveled into the final frontier are honoring the actress’ pivotal work in getting women and people of color into NASA’s astronaut program.
On Paramount+, alongside all of Nichols’ “Star Trek” adventures, the documentary “Woman in Motion” chronicles how Nichols used her fame as Enterprise officer Lt. Uhura to challenge NASA to seek out a more diverse set of astronauts during the development of its space shuttle program, leading to a partnership between the space agency and Nichols’ program Women in Motion.
When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon in 1969 — and “Star Trek” was finishing its original run on TV — the astronaut program was exclusively filled with white men who served as military test pilots. Nichols criticized NASA for its claims that it could not find...

It would be tempting to call Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood a collection of Richard Linklater’s greatest hits. The film is a casual look back at a specific time and place, like Dazed and Confused (1993) and Everybody Wants Some!! (2016). It employs the whimsical rotoscope-style animation of Waking Life (2001) and A Scanner Darkly (2006), and it makes effective use of Jack Black, who has done his best work with the director in School of Rock (2003) and Bernie (2011).
But the film is more than just a pastiche of Linklater’s trademarks. Instead, it’s an opportunity for the director to bring his unique abilities to a story that is deeply specific yet captures the mood of an entire generation. It’s a nostalgic ode to life at the center of the space race and a celebration of childhood, optimism and the complexities of growing up American.

Alec Baldwin has engaged the services of former Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron S. Dyer of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman for civil suits related to the “Rust” shooting, Variety has confirmed. The L.A.-based Dyer will represent Baldwin, Rust Movie Productions and other production companies involved in the film.
Baldwin, who was both starring in and serving as producer on the independent Western movie “Rust,” fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on Oct. 21 near Santa Fe, N.M., after being told a prop gun was safe. The gun contained at least one live round, which killed Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza.
Two lawsuits have been filed so far — one by script supervisor Mamie Mitchell, who said she suffered “physical and emotional injuries” when Baldwin shot the film’s cinematographer. The suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, names several crew members in addition to Baldwin and the film’s producers.

Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio, as two low-level astronomers, warn civilization about a giant asteroid that looks to take out the Earth in the first trailer for Netflix’s dark comedy “Don’t Look Up.”
Unlike Lawrence and DiCaprio as actors, the characters they portray — an astronomy grad student Kate Dibiasky (Lawrence) and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (DiCaprio) — fly under the radar in their field. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, they are not. However, the stargazers are the first to realize that space junk is flying fast toward the planet, leading them to embark on a press tour to spread the word about a comet that could destroy the world.
They are met with a surprising amount of apathy, pushing DiCaprio’s character to the brink of a panic attack and Lawrence’s to eventually order not one, but two additional glasses of wine at dinner.

Barry Levinson To Direct Apollo 11 Limited Series From Kevin Costner, Stephen Kronish & Mike Medavoy
Exclusive: Barry Levinson is attached to direct a limited TV series that will be exec produced by Kevin Costner, and comes from 24’s Stephen Kronish and Zodiac producer Mike Medavoy.
The Oscar-winning director behind Rain Man, Good Morning, Vietnam and Diner is set to helm One Giant Leap, a series that will tell the story of the moon landing.
The project is being written and showrun by Kronish, who was a producer and writer on 24 between seasons three and seven, and was also an exec producer of The Kennedys minseries.
It will look at one of the most historic events in U.S. history from a slightly different angle, stressing the personality conflicts within the flight team that almost doomed the mission before it left the launch pad – and how a NASA psychiatrist’s predictions of disaster for astronaut Buzz Aldrin were ignored by her superiors. On Tuesday’s “Late Show,” Stephen Colbert made fun of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ trip into inner space. “So happy you could all join us tonight for a momentous day in the history of some people having way too much money,” he said to open his monologue.
Colbert made some jokes about how phallic Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket looks (and how phallic Bezos himself looks) and laughed at the cowboy hat Bezos put on as he exited the rocket after it landed. “A cowboy hat? So he went into space and somehow became extra divorced,” he cracked.
Bezos is the second billionaire in just over a week to take a rocket ride on a spacecraft he paid for, in a space race among rich egomaniacs that is much less momentous than you’d think it was by the amount of media coverage it gets.

Update 06:54 Am Pt: Jeff Bezos’ first trip to the edges of space was significant enough to draw coverage from all the major cable news and traditional broadcast networks, relying on the captivating Blue Origin footage of the launch, flight and landing.
“It’s amazing how short this adventure was,” CNN’s Anderson Cooper said after it was clear that Bezos and fellow astronauts were safe at the Texas landing site.
“Yeah, Anderson, but it is still kind of scary, when you are talking about rockets,” Miles O’Brien, aviation analyst who had long covered the NASA space program for the network.
The coverage had some shades of the past, what with some veteran astronauts providing commentary against the anticipation of countdown clocks. But the differences were especially apparent when CNN and other networks patched in audio from the capsule, hoots and cheering could be heard during the brief period of weightlessness,...

Lucasfilm has hit the streets of Glasgow, Scotland for Indiana Jones 5. After an extended stay at Bamburgh Castle in the Northumberland coast of England, star Harrison Ford, director James Mangold, and the rest of the production have moved to the Scottish city to film scenes set in what we can assume is the movie’s “modern-day” setting after the flashbacks shot in England.
Since the movie is filming on location at the moment instead in the secrecy of a Pinewood Studios soundstage, photo leaks abound from the set. In fact, the latest set photos to hit the internet reveal quite a bit about when the movie is set and also give us our first looks at some of the characters joining Indy for his final adventure. Obviously, there are spoilers ahead, so if you don’t want to know anything about this movie before it hits theaters, you might want to turn back now.

Soleil Moon Frye became the ultimate Eighties child star on Punky Brewster, at the age of seven. She played America’s favorite wise-cracking moppet, wearing mismatched high-tops and extolling the virtues of Punky Power. The show was eventually cancelled in 1988 — and that’s when Frye started toting a video camera around, filming her other child-star friends, just in time for their awkward teen years. Kid 90, a new documentary that begins streaming on Hulu today, turns her home-movie footage into a time capsule of show-biz kids growing up in Nineties Hollywood.

The Salvation Army has received a $45,000 donation from Dr. Buzz Aldrin, Apollo XI Lunar Module Pilot, Usaf Colonel and Moonwalker, in support of the organization’s ongoing relief efforts to serve vulnerable Americans, particularly those impacted by Covid-19.
“Since last March, The Salvation Army has been hard at work serving the increase of people in need as a result of the economic and emotional impact of the pandemic,” said Commissioner Kenneth G. Hodder, National Commander of The Salvation Army. “Through donors like Dr. Buzz Aldrin, we’re able to continue providing support to those most affected by the pandemic. We can’t thank Dr. Aldrin enough for his generosity.”

The Disney+ series, The Right Stuff, is about trailblazers, but as a TV show, it stands in a crowd.
Shows about astronauts and space agencies seem to be back in vogue because For All Mankind, Space Force, Away, and Moonbase 8 made their debuts, too.
Mega franchises, Star Trek and Star Wars continue to boldly go and explore a galaxy far, far away.
And since the 1983 film version is beloved and iconic, the comparisons between the two were inevitable.
Yet, as I was watching The Right Stuff, I wasn't comparing it to any of those other shows or the film. What I kept being reminded of, and wanted to watch instead, was HBO's From The Earth To The Moon.
Produced by Ron Howard and Tom Hanks (who also directed and acted in it), From The Earth To The Moon was HBO's 1998 mini-series chronicling the U.S. space program from NASA's reaction...
