- Was an altar boy and attended a Seminary as a Freshman in High School.
- Served as a Green Beret in the Vietnam War.
- Is a second-generation American. His mother was from Scotland and his father was from France.
- Earned an MFA in Film Studies from the NYU: Tisch School of the Arts in 1977.
- Graduated from Montclair State University.
- Attended Rutgers University for one year before joining the United States Army where he was a Team Leader with Special Forces in Vietnam and Laos. He did two tours and participated in what he called SLAM operations, short for Search, Locate, Annihilate and Monitor.
- Has two sons Scot and Chris, and two daughters, Joy and Nina.
- Taught filmmaking at Montclair State, Hofstra, and Five Towns College in New York.
