Top: Gun Maverick is approaching a different kind of danger zone. With nomination voting underway, Maverick still doesn’t have its potential sound nominees locked up, in what has become a contentious process, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
As of Thursday afternoon, members of the Academy’s sound executive branch, which annually holds a meeting in December to vet the names submitted as contenders, was still investigating which names should appear on the ballot for Maverick, should the movie make the final five.
Sources say the impasse stems from the fact that there were two teams that worked on the movie at different times. One was a team at Skywalker Sound in northern California and the other is a team that worked at De Lane Lea in London. THR could not get clarity on specifics of the impasse at press time. But this does offer a glimpse into what...

The Good Doctor has been a compelling and emotionally charged staple for ABC on Monday nights, breaking ground with its depiction of the autistic Dr. Shawn Murphy navigating a prestigious hospital as well as fraught workplace and personal drama.
But the show, which marks its 100th episode Nov. 14, had a long path to air, with Daniel Dae Kim, who bought the rights to the 2013 Korean series of the same name, shopping it for several years before it finally landed with House creator David Shore and Sony Pictures Television.
Now six seasons in, with Golden Globe nominee Freddie Highmore in the starring role, it has been a ratings success (per Nielsen, its season-six premiere rated tops in the 10 p.m. hour in the 18-to-49 demo) and started new conversations about representation of neurodiversity. Was anyone surprised that Shaun butted heads with his new resident on his first day as an attending?
The Good Doctor Season 6 Episode 2 dealt with Shaun being on the other side of a conflict between attending and resident. For the first time, he was the boss, and he almost made an irreversible mistake.
Thankfully, he did the right thing in the end, coming up with a solution that allowed Powell to continue learning despite her refusal to do the procedure.
Shaun didn't think the situation with Powell was analogous to his disagreements with Glassman or other doctors, and in a way, he was right.
Powell was taking an ethical stance that would make it more difficult for her to proceed with her career, while Shaun tended to disagree with other doctors about the best course of treatment.

There was great joy and terrible heartbreak when we last checked into St. Bonaventure Hospital in The Good Doctor. While the long-awaited wedding of Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) and Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara) was being celebrated on the roof, surgery chief Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) and Nurse Villanueva (Elfina Luk) were bleeding out a few floors below after being stabbed multiple times by Villanueva’s abusive ex-boyfriend. Season 6 picks up moments later. “Real adrenaline with real emotional stakes,” co-showrunner Liz Friedman says of the hour. She hints at what comes after. 1. Lim survives, but her life is forever changed. Although Villanueva’s fate is under wraps, Lim returns to her prestigious job, despite “having to deal with a long-term [disability] and seeing how the rest of her life fits around that,” Friedman says. The first trailer for The Good Doctor Season 6 is finally here, and Dr. Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) may not be the only one we need to be worried about! Even though the new video (which you can watch below) begins with a happy look at newlyweds Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) and Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara) sharing a romantic dance on the roof of the hospital, things then take a frightening turn. ABC is closing in on another franchise.
Deadline revealed Monday that a spinoff of the hit series The Good Doctor is in development.
Characters from the planned series will appear in an episode of The Good Doctor Season 6.
The potential series will center on Joni, “a twentysomething woman who battles obsessive compulsive disorder but is a brilliant lawyer,” according to the outlet.
Joni will be introduced to The Good Doctor (universe?) when she is hired as a defense attorney for Freddie Highmore’s Dr. Shaun Murphy.
"Relatively new to her upscale law firm, Joni, who is funny, eager, self-aware and a bit anxious, is part of Shaun’s legal defense team,” the logline teases.
“Despite breezing through law school and her Bar exam, Joni’s Ocd symptoms take a severe toll on her personal and professional life. Living with Ocd, Joni has never wanted to be treated differently and is often embarrassed of her symptoms.

Exclusive: After expanding one popular long-running procedural drama, The Rookie, with a planted spinoff for next season, ABC is looking to do it for another, The Good Doctor with an embedded episode. I hear the network is developing legal offshoot The Good Lawyer, from The Good Doctor executive producers/co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman, Sony Pictures TV and Shore’s studio-based Shore Z Prods. ABC Signature is co-producing.
Like with the Nathan Fillion-starring The Rookie, the spinoff of the Freddie Highmore-headlined The Good Doctor will have a female lead and will be introduced as a backdoor pilot during The Good Doctor‘s upcoming sixth season, I hear. Reps for ABC and Sony TV declined comment, and deals are still being worked out.
According to sources, two characters from The Good Lawyer, the lead Joni as well as Janet, will appear in Episode 613 of The Good Doctor, with the roles currently casting.

Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy made the decision to merge the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the second annual Best Sound prize are “Belfast,” “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds indicate that “Dune” (31/10) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “West Side Story” (39/10), “No Time to Die” (4/1), “The Power of the Dog” (9/2), and “Belfast” (9/2).
The craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a staggering 86 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work in 57 films. Those responsible for the largest chunks are Andy Nelson and Gary Rydstrom, whose shared bid for “West Side Story” brings their respective individual totals to 22 and 19. Rydstrom has collected seven trophies over the years, including two each for “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1992), “Jurassic Park” (1994), and “Saving Private Ryan” (1999) and one for...

Updated March 21: “Dune” got two big boosts with Mpse and Cas wins, bolstering its Oscar chances on Sunday. The sci-fi epic took feature effects/foley at the virtual 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards on March 13, and then live-action sound mixing at the 58th annual Cinema Audio Society Awards at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
Updated February 11: The sound Oscar nominees — “Belfast” (Focus Features), “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “No Time to Die” (MGM/UA), “West Side Story” (20th Century/Disney), and “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix) — provide a range of imaginative soundscapes that connect to the personal stories in fresh ways.
However, the sonic power and complexity of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” is going to be hard to beat. Its great achievement is creating a grounded reality that is both innovative and believable. So, rather than relying on over-hyped sounds, the sound team conveyed an otherworldly palette that is hallucinatory yet gritty,...

The Oscar-frontrunner “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “Nightmare Alley” (Searchlight Pictures), and “West Side Story” (20th Century Studios) each won sound editing feature awards Sunday night at the 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards (held virtually). “Dune” took feature effects/foley, “Nightmare Alley,” a non-Oscar nominee and surprise winner over “Dune” and “No Time to Die,” snagged feature dialogue/Adr, and Oscar nominee “West Side Story” collected feature music. The other Oscar sound nominees are “Belfast” (Focus Features), “No Time to Die” (MGM/UA), and “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix).
There were other surprises: Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” triumphed in animation over the studio’s Oscar-frontrunner, “Encanto,” which has won a slew of guild awards, and “The Rescue” (Disney+) took feature documentary over Oscar-frontrunner “Summer of Soul” (Searchlight Pictures). Additionally, “Cliff Walkers” (Viki) earned foreign language honors, and “Infinite” (Paramount +) grabbed non-theatrical feature.

For the acclaimed sound team behind Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” – including frequent Spielberg collaborators and Oscar winners like supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer Gary Rydstrom, re-recording mixer Andy Nelson, and scoring mixer Shawn Murphy, all of whom were recently nominated by the Cinema Audio Society for their work in the film – the challenges of creating the musical were vast. The group, which also included production mixer Tod A. Maitland, had to not only make the transitions between dialogue and song sound uniform but account for numerous musical numbers large and small. But while sequences such as the show-stopping “America” had challenges, it was Rita Moreno’s emotional take on “Somewhere” that proved to be the biggest high-wire act.
