Back in 1997, the touching masterpiece Good Will Hunting shined mostly due to the successful collaboration of the two best friends, who wrote the script and starred in the movie too. Apart from playing in Kevin Smith’s cinema universe in Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob movies, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck got back together for the 2021 mixedly received historical drama The Last Duel.
However, you may have missed Affleck’s recent directorial success, in which the duo starred and served as the producers. Based on the true story, it follows the launch of Air Jordan, a line of basketball shoes produced by Nike in collaboration with rookie player Michael Jordan.
Set in 1984, it revolves around Sonny Vaccaro (played by Affleck), Nike's basketball talent scout, who is tasked to come up with a new brand ambassador for Nike basketball shoes to raise the decreasing income of the company’s shoe division.

For 40 years, the Sundance Film Festival has been the United States' preeminent market and showcase for independent film. Over this span, the festival has become famous not just for the groundbreaking movies it's premiered, but its wintry Park City, Utah setting. January is peak ski season in the once-sleepy resort town, which gives Hollywood execs, producers and artists extra incentive to skip town and squeeze in some time on the slopes while watching loads of new movies from some of the most talented and excitingly unconventional filmmakers on the planet.
This annual tradition could be coming to an end.
Today, the Sundance Institute announced that it is soliciting bids to relocate the 10-day festival. According to festival director Eugene Hernandez:
"We are in a unique moment for our festival and our global film community, and with the contract up for renewal, this exploration allows us to responsibly consider how...

The People's Joker. In The People’s Joker (2022), Vera Drew makes her feverish entrance into the cluttered morass of the DC Comics cinematic multiverse by bursting through a trapdoor. Having garnered recognition as an Emmy-nominated television editor for outré comedians such as Tim Heidecker, Eric André, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Tim Robinson, Drew serves as director, co-writer, editor, lead actress, and cosmic prankster for her cinematic debut. The anarchic DIY spectacle, recently released theatrically after two years in intellectual-property limbo, mines the contradictory supervillain mythologies of the Joker to narrate Drew’s journey of self-discovery as a trans woman in the fractious world of alternative comedy. After Warner Bros. sent a cryptic letter of disapproval regarding the film’s flagrant recontextualization of the Batman franchise a day before its debut at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, it was pulled from the program. Drew and her battalion of masked vigilantes have commandeered...

In “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” the gorilla has a new adversary: Skar King, the cunning, lanky, red-haired orangutan-like creature, who lords over the subterranean realm of Hollow Earth like a sadistic bully to keep his ape minions in line. With Shimo, the ancient ice Titan, whom he controls as his slave, Skar King is so formidable that it takes the two titular Titans to stop him from achieving world domination.
In creating the best villain yet in the five-film MonsterVerse franchise, director Adam Wingard relied on Wētā FX — the king of ape films, with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” right around the corner — to animate Skar King. They overhauled the design concept to ensure his biomechanics worked in line with the desired motion and also roughed him up, complete with a cat-eye reflection in one of his eyes.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, director Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel to his 1988 classic Beetlejuice (watch it Here), is set to reach theatres on September 6th. Since this is one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year, it was, of course, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was promoted during the Warner Bros. panel at CinemaCon, the gathering of movie theater owners from around the world currently being held in Las Vegas.
During the Warner Bros. panel at CinemaCon, the crowd saw footage highlighting the film’s practical effects. A few months ago, I wrote an article listing ten movies that – despite being well known – were difficult to find (legally) on any streaming service or even on disc. Those titles ranged from Ron Howard’s Cocoon to movies like Dawn of the Dead (the original). In the comments, many of our readers chimed in with their two cents on films they’ve found difficult to find over the years, so here are a few more challenging-to-find flicks, some of which may surprise you.
Panic Room:
The fact that David Fincher’s Panic Room has never been issued on Blu-ray blows me away. It’s been announced a few times, but a physical release never seems to happen (although you can stream it in HD pretty easily). What gives? Image Nation Abu Dhabi and Spooky Pictures recently teamed up to produce the horror film Late Night With the Devil, headed up by the Australian writing and directing duo of Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres) and starring David Dastmalchian – whose previous credits include The Boogeyman, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and The Suicide Squad. The film was recently given a theatrical release and has racked up positive reviews from the likes of Stephen King and Kevin Smith, not to mention JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols (you can read his 9/10 review at This Link). It’s set to reach the Shudder streaming service on April 19th, and in anticipation of the streaming release the film has gotten a new, retro-style poster. When Jason Reitman announced that he’d bought the Fox Village Theatre in Westwood, film fans were stunned that some of the world’s most prominent directors, from Steven Spielberg to Chloé Zhao to Christopher Nolan, wanted a stake in the classic movie palace.
But it’s a strange time for the theatrical exhibition business. Moviegoing always sees an uptick when blockbusters come to town, but for independent theaters, the past four years have been dreadful. Many smaller cities have no theaters left at all: Just this year, Ridgewood, N.J.’s Warner and Denver’s Esquire are among the theaters that have turned off their projectors for good.
Yet across the country, some operators refuse to give up, looking to a mix of successful filmmakers and local supporters to reopen beloved movie houses. Joining Reitman and New Beverly/Vista owner Quentin Tarantino is director Kevin Smith, who is hustling...

Kevin Smith could have bought the Quick Stop market he made famous in his first film, “Clerks.” But when the opportunity arose, the indie director instead put his hard-earned cash into his childhood movie theater in Atlantic Highlands, N.J., reopening it in 2022 as SModcastle Cinemas.
Now he’s fighting to keep the 103-year-old non-profit theater going, even if “exhibition is in the toilet,” as he likes to say. In other words, local audiences sometimes prefer to watch big hits like “Avatar” in modern multiplexes, and keeping a repertory theater vibrant without the help of a pricey beer and wine license is not for the faint of heart, he has found.
No matter: The “Chasing Amy” director is leveraging his pop culture brand to focus on bringing the New Jersey community classic cult movies, family films, merchandise sales and super-fresh popcorn.

While there has been no shortage of Batman in the realm of live-action, we’re still due for a live-action adaptation of one of the most influential Batman stories of all time. After crafting the definitive Batman experience with Batman: The Animated Series, Bruce Timm once again outdid himself with 1999’s Batman Beyond, set 40 years after the events of Btas.
Despite being decades old, the series still remains beloved by the fandom, and fans were ecstatic when it was rumored that a live-action adaptation with Michael Keaton might be heading our way. Even though it is no longer the case, Timm felt Keaton was perfect to play the part.

Kevin Smith’s new film, The 4:30 Movie, has been shot and has now been snapped up for distribution worldwide: more here.
Rest is not on the agenda for Kevin Smith, who in recent times has invested in the cinema he frequented when he was younger, rebranding it The Smodcastle Cinemas. He co-owns the site, and also shot a film there by the name of The 4:30 Movie.
Starring Austin Zajur, Nicholas Cirillo and Reed Northrup, The 4:30 Movie is described as a 1986-set comedy of age comedy, centred on three 16-year old chums who sneak into the movies every Saturday. What’s this, though? One of them, one day, invites a girl? Honestly. Tsk. Etc. She’s played by Siena Agudong, and also in the cast are Justin Long, Harley Quinn Smith, Keon Jeong and Jason Lee.

What’s a film without distribution? The Popcorn List sets out to make sure that doesn’t happen to the best indies.
Founded by Lela Meadow-Conner and Barbara Twist, the inaugural annual survey spotlights 20 features that debuted at major or regional film festivals this past year and come highly recommended by festival programmers. Nineteen out of the 20 movies have reviews on Letterboxd, despite not yet having theatrical or digital distribution in the U.S. All 20 have won awards — including Audience Awards and Jury Awards — at festivals like Sundance and SXSW.
Billed as being The Black List for undistributed films, the 2024 Popcorn List highlights independent films that are currently still without domestic U.S. distribution, like the documentary “Chasing Chasing Amy” about the making of Kevin Smith’s comedy.
The other 18 are: “Ajoomma,” “American Pot Story: Oaksterdam,” “Art for Everybody,” “Asog,” “Blood Sweat & Beers,” “Caterpillar,” “Citizen Sleuth,” “City of Wind,” “Crows Are White,...

Having wrapped up (at least for now — there has still been talk of more Jay and Silent Bob movies and that long-anticipated Mallrats sequel) his Clerks universe with the third outing, Kevin Smith is back in original territory. His latest film, The 4:30 Movie, has just landed its first distribution deal.
Not, as you might initially suspect, a play on 4/20 and stoner culture (which has been a fertile subject matter for Smith), it'd actually a coming-of-age comedy set in the heady days of one summer in 1986.
We meet three 16-year-old friends, played by Austin Zajur, Nicholas Cirillo and Reed Northrup, who like nothing more of a Saturday than sneaking into their local multiplex. Divisions creep in when one of them invites the girl of his dreams (Siena Agudong) along, and all end up learning lessons about life and love.

Saban Films announced today the acquisition of worldwide rights to the upcoming comedy The 4:30 Movie, directed and written by Kevin Smith.
Set in the summer of 1986, The 4:30 Movie is a coming-of-age story about three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams (Siena Agudong) to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.
Set in the mobile phoneless, social media-free era of the ’80s, Smith shot The 4:30 Movie at his Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey—the same movie theater he haunted every weekend as a teenager. Two years ago, Smith and his co-owners saved the century-old Atlantic Highlands bijou from demolition, renaming it after his podcast theater.

One of Hollywood’s most controversial figures, Harvey Weinstein, reportedly manipulated Good Will Hunting’s theatrical run. He did the most Harvey Weinstein thing possible, to allegedly undercut Robin Williams’ contractual terms. This was driven by what appeared to be pure greed, or that is what Kevin Smith would like to believe.
Weinstein’s company, Miramax, responsible for distributing the Oscar-winning film, abruptly pulled it from theaters to expedite its release on video, seemingly to prevent Williams from receiving a more favorable end of the agreed-upon deal.

Known for his bold storytelling and unwavering vision, Martin Scorsese is a prominent figure of the New Hollywood era who has never been afraid to voice his opinions. The Grammy Award-winning filmmaker, 81, has expressed reservations about the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), raising concerns about the eligibility of films that are based on comic book characters.
Well, remember his famous claim that superhero flicks are more like theme park rides than real-deal cinematic productions? It was a statement that both industry insiders and a significant portion of Marvel fans took offense to. However, when Scorsese speaks, listeners should usually take note of what this exceptionally intelligent man has to say.

Late Night With the Devil, which is proving to be one of the biggest breakout indie hits in recent memory, is reportedly on track to gross an estimated $666,666 at the box office today. The final numbers aren’t in, but what a ghoulish, perhaps even unholy, surprise this is. It’s the kind of publicity you can’t buy, and to be fair, Variety’s report might be off a bit. When I put together our own box office report here on JoBlo, I tend to follow the numbers put out by Paul Dergarabedian at Comscore, and so far, he hasn’t listed Late Night With the Devil’s daily gross. It’s an indie flick, and the reporting from IFC might be delayed, given their more limited resources. Usually, box office analysts can crunch numbers...

Believe it or not, Ben Affleck hasn’t been involved in any direct sequels throughout his career. While he has reprised roles in various films, none of them can be considered direct sequels to his previous work. However, for the first time in his 41-year career, the actor will be starring in a direct sequel to The Accountant called The Accountant 2. This marks a potentially record-breaking or perhaps a record-setting moment in Hollywood.
Ben Affleck in a still from The Accountant This Upcoming Ben Affleck Movie Sets a Record in His Career
Ben Affleck fans have reason to celebrate, as the actor ventures into uncharted territory by starring in a direct sequel of The Accountant as per Deadline. The anticipation surrounding this sequel continues to grow because of Affleck’s rare participation in such projects. Fans are thus wondering what it might be that convinced him to say yes!

Say his name three times. Do it. Unlike Candyman, most people would love to summon Beetlejuice. He’s the Ghost With The Most. The film Beetlejuice became an instant classic when it haunted theater screens in the spring of 1988. Burton’s visual aesthetic, along with the amazing performances by Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, captivated audiences. The film easily grossed over $75 Million at the box office on a $15 Million budget. People loved the character, and he even got a Saturday morning cartoon spin-off that kids loved, but it’s taken thirty-five years for them to get Beetlejuice 2 off the ground!
While, after many false starts, the Beetlejuice sequel has just about finished shooting, believe it or not, work on Beetlejuice 2 began not long after the original movie premiered! We did a whole video that dived into the production history that you can watch here, but here’s the...

For a good number of genre fans, including myself, it’s one of the most highly anticipated horror releases of the year. The film has gotten positive reviews from the likes of Stephen King and Kevin Smith, not to mention JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols (you can read his 9/10 review at This Link), and it’s now playing in theatres, courtesy of IFC Films. But as Late Night With the Devil reaches the big screen, it’s also stirring up controversy, as it has been revealed that the movie features a few pieces of...

Michael Keaton is back as the titular Ghost with the Most in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, director Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel to his 1988 classic Beetlejuice (watch it Here). Winona Ryder is reprising the role of Lydia Deetz. Catherine O’Hara is back as Lydia’s stepmother Delia. But now The Hollywood Reporter has been able to confirm that Jeffrey Jones, who played Lydia’s father Charles in the original movie, is not in the sequel. Few fans expected him to be, as Jones hasn’t gotten a lot of screen acting jobs since 2003, when he pled no contest to “hiring a 14-year-old boy to pose naked for photos, for which he was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to register as a sex offender.” He has been in a few movies since then, but his most substantial job was on the TV series Deadwood. He appeared on 35 episodes of that show...

Twenty years ago, I saw a movie that changed my life. I also saw Jersey Girl. Not a bad movie. I enjoy it to this day - especially George Carlin as the gruff but loveable grandfather. It’s a fun movie and I recommend you check it out if you haven’t - it really got a bad rap. But that’s not what we’re here to talk about. We’re here to celebrate Zack Snyder’s 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead.
In March of 2004, some friends and I decided to do a double feature of Jersey Girl (because we liked Kevin Smith) and Dawn of the Dead (because it looked scary). Jersey Girl worked out fine and we all had a nice time, and then Dawn of the Dead had us talking excitedly for the rest of the night. It had an immediate effect, giving us the...

In 2024, could there be sure a thing as a “hip film studio” that would attract both filmmakers and adventurous filmgoers despite the subject matter or “creatives”? From the intense internet “buzz” the answer is a big yes. A century ago it was those Warner Brothers with their urban crime thrillers (before expanding into swashbucklers and tearjerkers). And there are those studios that specialize in a genre as Blumhouse does with horror and the Marvel Studios with their comics properties. Perhaps the last time a studio inspired nearly blind loyalty may have been in the early 90s with Miramax, which introduced us to, among many, Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino before one of the founders started the spark that became “Me Too”. Today it is A24, which grabbed the top six Oscars a year ago. Last week saw the release of Love Lies Bleeding. From that quirky crime noir/love story...

Yesterday, we saw a couple first look images from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, director Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel to his 1988 classic Beetlejuice (watch it Here) – and now the first teaser trailer for the film has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to reach theatres on September 6th, so we still have over five months left to wait for this one.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was in development hell for decades before it finally got made. In 1990, Jonathan Gems was hired to write a sequel that was going to be titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. Burton considered having Daniel Waters rewrite that script, Pamela Norris did rewrite it, and Warner Bros. offered Kevin Smith the chance to do another rewrite. He turned it down. Seth Grahame-Smith was hired to write and produce a new version of a sequel in 2011. Mike Vukadinovich was brought on to rewrite...

Not since wandering into Kevin Smith’s Clerks in an Oshawa multiplex in 1994 have I immediately glommed on to a micro-budget comedy as something that can be watched over and over again. Tynan DeLong’s Dad & Step-Dad is a small, but significant, revelation on the power of improv and DIY filmmaking, how performance and clever editing can run with a (deceptively) simple concept to an entertaining whole. Two distressingly competitive guys in almost-but-not-quite matching goatees have planned a getaway to a cottage in Upstate New York to bond with their son. One is the dad, and the other is the stepdad. The environment is perfect to work out unconventional family dynamics. The brooks babble and the flowers are blossoming. The forest is the very...

Before Marvel Studios had the rights to the X-Men, Deadpool, Daredevil and The Fantastic Four, 20th Century Fox was secretly working on a film with all these characters. Shaun and his best mate Ed are in trouble. They’ve discovered two zombies in their garden, and the lumbering flesh-eaters show no signs of stopping. However, Shaun and Ed have found one way of slowing the approach: throwing records.
And so, as the two zombies grow closer, Ed and Shaun rustle through the latter’s collection. “Sign o’ the Times … Purple Rain,” Ed suggests as projectiles, only to have Shaun tell him no. That is until Ed reaches a low point in Prince’s discography, the Batman soundtrack. “Throw it,” Shaun commands, striking a blow against the living dead.
The above scene is just one instance of the humor and horror that director Edgar Wright and his co-writer Simon Pegg bring to the RomZomCom Shaun of the Dead, released twenty years ago. Shaun (Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) spend a lot of time discussing their pop-cultural interests, even in the most dire situations.

Netflix’s Daredevil series was widely acclaimed for its gripping storyline and fantastic cast, but what sets it apart from other Marvel projects at the time was its love for violence.
Daredevil from Marvel Comics
Indeed, the show promised brutal action as well as gory fight scenes, and while fans may think the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen is gruesome enough, his comic book counterpart is way more wicked and evil.
Matt Murdock Mercilessly Attempts To Kill A Baby
Nerdak Comics from YouTube gave a summary of Matt Murdock’s most insane plot line in Marvel Comics. If he is portrayed in the show as reasonable, this comic book character is as ruthless as he can be.
“In one of Mysterio’s stranger schemes, he has relations with a woman and she becomes pregnant. After her child is born, she gives the baby to Daredevil believing he’s supposed to care for it.

The 1988 Tim Burton-directed classic Beetlejuice (watch it Here) is finally getting a sequel this year, with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice set to reach theatres on September 6th. When a director circles a project, it can be a tentative proposition – as we all discovered last week when word began to spread that David Leitch was likely to make the next Jurassic World entry, before he swiftly dropped out. But things are apparently much more promising for Bumblebee director (and Laika studio boss) Travis Knight, who is closing in on a deal to handle the new live-action Masters Of The Universe film.
According to Deadline's sources, Knight has yet to sign, but it's looking good for him — especially since Chris Butler, a veteran Laika writer and director – is polishing the script. But they'll need all the help they can get, as this is one that has eluded more than one studio and a host of filmmakers.
