To begin with a brief editorial: the unbinding of special effects ultimately harms "Star Trek."
One of the reasons Trekkies become attached to certain characters, or fall in love with the workspaces on various ships and space stations is because the shows spend so much time with them. There are many, many episodes of "Star Trek" that take place entirely on board the Enterprise, and fans — long paying attention — begin to know its geography. After enough time watching a Starfleet vessel, viewers feel like they could, if they should be magically transported there, find their way around.
Taking "Star Trek" away from a starship for too long can, quite tragically, rob a show of a vital sense of place. We, as Trekkies, need to see what everyday life is like on a starship and see what a "normal boring" day looks like before we can appreciate the depth of a crisis.

One of the central locations of the 2017 TV series "Star Trek: Picard" was the winery of the title character. The retired Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), after a long career in Starfleet and a bitter extraction from the organization, moved into his ancestral family home and turned to wine-making as a hobby. In a fun marketing tie-in, Trekkies can buy bottles of Chateau Picard for themselves. Picard's home is, as fans of the character may have intuited, a low-tech locale, replete with old-fashioned paper books, wooden beams, breakfast nooks, and a lot of natural light. Picard, after all, was frequently seen thumbing through paper tomes, listening to centuries-old music, and drinking Earl Grey tea, a drink not invented until the 1830s. Throughout "Star Trek," Picard mentioned his ancestors, noting that Picards fought at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The man, however much he may dislike the fact, has a legacy. He did,...

The final two episodes of "Star Trek: Picard," called "Võx" and "The Last Generation" respectively, concluded the season's strangest mystery. The young Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) had revealed on several occasions that he possessed eerie and inexplicable psychic powers. Not only could he read people's minds, but he could project his consciousness into other people's bodies and take control of them remotely. He also was inexplicably a martial arts expert and was capable of killing bad guys in ways he didn't think he was capable of.
The final explanation for his powers was perhaps a little silly. It turns out his long-lost father was Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and he inherited a Borg gene from his father. Picard, it seems, received the Borg gene from when he had been assimilated decades prior. The inherited gene gave Jack superpowers and also psychically lured him into the clutches of the insidious Borg Queen,...

The third season of "Star Trek: Picard" reunited the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" for one final adventure that gave fans a satisfying conclusion to the beloved TV series, and part of that meant returning to the bridge of one of the franchise's most well-known ships. In the penultimate episode, engineer Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) reveals that he's been restoring the Enterprise-d himself. The ship's former crew need a vessel that's not hooked up to Starfleet systems, and the D is perfect because of its retro technology. Even those who found the farewell to "Next Gen" a little too full of fan-service had to be somewhat excited to see the old gang back on the bridge of a ship not seen since "Star Trek Generations." For many sci-fi nerds of a certain age, the Enterprise-d feels like a second home, and it's joyous to see that some things don't ever change,...

In the third and final season of "Star Trek: Picard," a vicious Changeling named Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer) is eager to apprehend Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Vadic is a vicious killer who has no compunction about blowing up ships and murdering thousands. It seems she and several of her Changeling compatriots were medically tortured during the Dominion War (a conflict dramatized on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine") and was in no mood to offer forgiveness. Vadic commanded a starship she called the Shrike, a massive, pointy, claw-like vessel that was armed to the teeth. Captain Riker (Jonathan Frakes) took one look at the Shrike and declared it to be more guillotine than starship.
On the bridge of the Shrike, Vadic sat in an enormous chair, surrounded in the shadows by masked servants who fired weapons and cut down enemy combatants. The chair, as it so happens,...

“We’re all blessed in some ways but also cursed to have the amount of legacy on this show because it means that you have almost 56 years of creative material to draw from, but that also means you have a lot of rules and regulations and canon that you have to adhere to. So there’s a kind of pressure to it as well,” notes “Star Trek: Picard” showrunner Terry Matalas about the technical details that have accumulated throughout “Trek” history. We talked to Matalas for our “Making Of” panel series along with costume designer Michael Crow, makeup department head James MacKinnon, prosthetics designer Vincent Van Dyke and visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman. “It was not going to be this.”
Terry Matalas doesn’t mince words about the difficulty of getting the “Next Generation” band back together for Season 3 of “Star Trek: Picard.” In fact, when he came onboard as showrunner prior to the second season, there was no plan for a reunion of the beloved Enterprise-D crew (nor an appearance from the ship itself).
“Because that was not the show they had set out to make,” he added in a new interview with IndieWire, alongside production designer Dave Blass. “‘Picard’ was the deconstruction of Jean-Luc Picard, and it had a new cast, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”
Matalas knew, though, that bringing back the full “Next Generation” cast for one final adventure — after their voyages came to a thud of an end with 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis” — would be electric if it happened.
He made it so.

[This story contains spoilers for Picard season three’s final episode.]
Star Trek Picard’s third season finale takes the Next Generation crew back to where it all began — though showrunner Terry Matalas was too busy capturing its key scenes to take in the wonder of being on the bridge of the Enterprise-d nearly 30 years after Tng went off the air.
“The Last Generation” – written and directed by Matalas – concludes a season-long narrative with a finale that is a high-stakes mix of nostalgia and tears. The episode finds Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the rest of his The Next Generation crew taking their old ship, the Enterprise-d, deep into the heart of a massive Borg cube to save Picard’s Borg-ified son, Jack (Ed Speleers), from the vengeful clutches of the Borg Queen (voiced by Star Trek: First Contact’s Alice Krige) before she can use Jack (Aka “Vox”) to assimilate the galaxy. Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments in Season 3, Episode 9 of “Star Trek: Picard,” currently streaming on Paramount+.
All season long, the producers of “Star Trek: Picard” have boldly pulled out all the stops to make the third and final season one for the books. To that extent, it seemed like only a matter of time until we finally got to see the Enterprise — that is, the Enterprise-d, the Galaxy-class starship that made its first appearance in 1987 with the premiere episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
That moment of truth finally came at the end of “Vox” — the 9th and penultimate episode of Season 3 — when the reunited bridge crew took their stations on the Enterprise-d, which turns out to be the only Federation starship capable of resisting assimilation by the powerful Borg.
Executive producer Terry Matalas went through hoops to make sure history never forgot the name Enterprise.

Last year, Mike White’s The White Lotus was up for for 20 Emmy Awards. The series became a winner in half of the categories. In 2023, the HBO Max series will not be considered for awards in the categories for limited or anthology series. Find out why.

In 2021, the Television Academy defined a limited or anthology series as a story that resolves within a season. No ongoing storylines are allowed in this category. With The White Lotus Sicily, Coolidge’s character Tanya McQuoid’s role is a recurring character, making her storyline ongoing in the HBO series.

If you only know Star Trek through its movies and TV shows, then the USS Titan might not seem like a big deal. After all, the ship only first appeared in the finale of Lower Decks season one, not even three years ago, despite first being referenced all the way back in 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis. But to fans of the expanded universe of books and comics that stretches beyond the big and small screens, the Titan has a long and illustrious history, under the command of Captain William T. Riker. In fact, 15 novels have been published in the Star Trek: Titan franchise, chronicling the adventures of Captain Riker, his wife Counsellor Troi, and the crew of their Luna-class ship.

In just about every way, the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard” is both about looking back and moving forward. In addition to reuniting the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise from “The Next Generation” for the first time since 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis,” it also features a new starship on which most of the action takes place: the U.S.S. Titan, first seen in animated form on “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and now refit as a Neo-Constitution Class Starship.
For showrunner, executive producer and self-professed “Star Trek” fan Terry Matalas, the inspiration for a retro-looking starship came while he was shopping for a car. “I missed a proper saucer section on the top part of a starship, and I couldn’t help but notice how many cars have gone retro these days. And I remember, as I was driving around, I thought, ‘What if Starfleet did that?...

Even in a throwback, Star Trek needs to boldly go. After twenty episodes of adventuring around the galaxy with a crew of mostly new faces, the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard finally brings the titular Starfleet officer back to his erstwhile crew. But rather than completely retread the beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation, Picard will find new ways for the heroes to explore the galaxy. Most surprisingly, the series will take place not on a newer version of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the setting for all seven seasons and four movies of Next Generation, but on an upgraded model of the U.S.S. Titan.
“So, in the trailer, you see our hero ship of season three,” showrunner Terry Matalas told TrekMovie. “It’s actually a class that’s called, in Starfleet slang, the Neo-Constitution class or Constitution III.” For casual Trek viewers, the name Titan probably means nothing.

Nichelle Nichols — famous for playing Nyota Uhura in Star Trek and six classic-era Trek feature films — has died at the age of 89. Her legacy as an activist and icon will live on not just in Trek, but also in the countless people she inspired. Martin Luther King Jr. was a personal fan of Nichols on Star Trek, as are Barack Obama and Stacey Abrams. She changed the direction of NASA forever by recruiting the first Black and female American astronauts ever and changed the way mainstream science fiction TV actually looked. Basically, without Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek couldn’t have changed the world.
But what happened to Uhura, the character, after the events of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country? While the 2008 Tim Russ-directed fan film Of Gods and Men revealed Uhura had become a Starfleet captain, that fact wasn’t exactly canonical. But now, it appears that the...

Gotham and The Flash survived after debuting last year, but Constantine sadly did not. There are a lot of reasons for that, and despite the best efforts of fans and those involved with the show, a second season won't be happening on NBC or anywhere else for that matter. Star Matt Ryan has now taken to Twitter to thank viewers for their support (he's about to romance Keira Knightley on Broadway, so try not to feel too sorry for him), while production designer Dave Blass tweeted a photo on Wednesday of the set being torn down. Are you guys going to miss Constantine? Sad news. Thank you #Hellblazers for your support u truly r the best, and thank you to everyone involved in the show. Memories made forever — Matt Ryan (@mattryanreal) June 10, 2015 Very disappointed that we are not continuing this journey, will miss playing john. You guys never gave up,...

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

In nominations announced on Monday, the Adg singled out 15 feature films and a number of television programs for its awards, which will be handed out on Jan. 31 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

If Christopher Nolan’s emotional plots don’t strike you, his elaborate design choices will on some level. He’s a guy who decided he needed to build all of Gotham City’s "The Narrows" on a stage, thought to put a ornate hotel hallway on a gimbal, and built a full-scale spaceship with windows displaying actual scenic black hole shots. He’s a crazyman when it comes to realizing his vision, and for that, the Art Directors Guild is praising him this awards season. The Art Directors Guild (Adg) announced late Wednesday that Christopher Nolan will receive the prestigious Cinematic Imagery Award from the at its 19th Annual Art Directors Guild’s Excellence in Production Design Awards. Spoiler alert! If you haven’t watched this week’s episode of Justified, stop reading now. Borrowing from Elmore Leonard’s novel Raylan, the episode, “Money Trap,” was written by Chris Provenzano and directed by Don Kurt, and featured the return of bail jumper Jody Adair (Chris Chalk) and the introduction of Jackie Nevada (The Secret Circle’s Shelley Hennig, making a nice career move). Oh, and there was the swingers party, which ended badly for Boyd — and Walton Goggins, it turns out. As he’ll do throughout the season, showrunner Graham Yost takes us inside the writers room.
