It’s a warm spring day in Asheville, North Carolina, and Charlie Parr is sitting on the back stairwell of Eulogy, a trendy music venue in the South Slope neighborhood. Later that evening, the singer-songwriter will play to a packed crowd. But, for now, Parr is soaking in every last ray of sunshine before he has to return to his native Minnesota, where winter has yet to fully let go.
“For a while, I think I was feeling intimidated by a lot of stuff,” Parr tells Rolling Stone. “Aging is intimidating.

The best pop stars are full of surprises. Beyoncé surprised everyone by releasing her version of The Beatles’ “Blackbird.” Paul McCartney had a strong reaction to the cover on social media. Fascinatingly, the original song was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement.
Paul McCartney said Beyoncé understood the message of The Beatles’ ‘Blackbird’
So many classic artists across genres have put their own spin on Beatles songs. Some of the R&b icons who covered Fab Four tracks include Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, and Prince. Beyoncé added her name to that canon with her cover of “Blackbird,” a folk ditty from The White Album.
In a 2024 Instagram post, Paul himself heaped praise on Queen B’s “Blackbird.” “I am so happy with @beyonce’s version of my song ‘Blackbird,'” he wrote. “I think she does a magnificent version of it and it reinforces the civil rights message...

Brian Cox says Succession creator Jesse Armstrong was a “gentleman” to salute him during his acceptance speech at Sunday night’s Emmy Awards.
The celebrated HBO drama won the top drama prize, and Armstrong praised the show’s cast, creatives and crew then lauded Cox, “who the show was revolved around whether he was in it or not.”
Later at the HBO | Max Emmy afterparty at San Vicente Bungalows, Cox tells me he was “touched” by Armstrong singling him out. “Jesse’s a gentleman in an industry where there aren’t many of those,” he says.
Cox adds that the entire team deserved the praise. ”All of them. The drama series win belongs to each and every one of them.”
The acclaimed actor says he knew Succession would become a “cultural landmark” from the time he read Armstrong’s first script. “I was in no doubt that it would become a benchmark.

Classic rock wouldn’t be the same without classical music. The Beatles’ “Let It Be” is based on one of the most famous classical pieces ever. So are a lot of other pop songs!
The Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’ is 1 of several pop songs inspired by Pachelbel’s Canon
In his 2020 book A Sound Mind: How I Fell in Love With Classical Music (and Decided to Rewrite Its Entire History), music writer Paul Morley discussed the impact of Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D, a piece of classical music also known as Pachelbel’s Canon. “Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D major [is] the original source of ambient music,” he said. “It was written possibly for his mentee Johann Bach’s (J. S. Bach’s father) wedding in 1694, more likely for just the kind of ordinary domestic function Telemann’s Table Music was designed for, and after being rediscovered in the 1920s,...

Paul McCartney‘s daughter, Stella McCartney, has become a fashion designer who’s famous in her own right. She once named her favorite songs. One was a song from The Beatles’ The White Album and another was a Beatles cover. Interestingly, she discussed how music influences her as a fashion designer.
Stella McCartney praised a song from The Beatles’ ‘The White Album’ for being poetic
During a 2017 interview with the BBC, McCartney discussed her favorite songs of all time. They included Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Talking Heads’ “Road to Nowhere,” George Michael’s “Faith,” David Bowie’s “Starman,” The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows,” Phyllis Dillon’s cover of The Beatles’ “Something,” and Louis Armstrong’s “A Kiss to Build a Dream On.” Classic rock apparently means a lot to her!
The only Fab Four original she put on the list was The Beatles’ “Blackbird” from The White Album.

Brian Cox became a familiar face all over the world thanks to playing Logan Roy in the hit HBO series “Succession,” but there have been some consequences. The actor is a veteran with some 240 credits to his name, but it is “Succession” that made him a household name.
“I’ve lost my anonymity and I’ve realized that that was what was important to me. I haven’t ever experienced anything like this,” Cox told The Guardian. “I mean, you ask for success in your work, and you get it, and then you have to deal with the consequences. I’ve always valued my privacy, but that’s gone. I’ve been very lucky that I’ve had it for so long. You know, I’ve been doing this for over 60 years. And finally it’s over.”
Cox also turned down roles in “Game of Thrones” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

“Icelandic pianist brings magic and spontaneity to Bach”
The Guardian
“A remarkable Bach recital that filled me with hope”
The I Paper
6 October 2023 — Celebrated for his visionary interpretations of J.S. Bach, Víkingur Ólafsson, one of the greatest pianists and musical minds of today, now embraces Bach’s monumental Goldberg Variations. Ólafsson is devoting his entire 2023-24 season to touring the work globally across six continents, and the album is out now on Deutsche Grammophon/Universal Music Canada. “I have dreamed of recording this work for 25 years,” says the Icelandic pianist.
“Víkingur Ólafsson breathes new life into every note of the Goldberg Variations,” says Dr Clemens Trautmann, President Deutsche Grammophon. “His subtle sensitivity of touch makes this complex composition seem light and effortless. Víkingur’s take on this pinnacle of Baroque musical art offers an almost paradoxical combination of the playful and the profound. This is how music composed ‘to refresh...

Before his passing in late March, the late Japanese composer and electronic music pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto had been putting together a playlist of music to be played at his own funeral. Now, Sakamoto’s management has shared that “last playlist,” simply titled “funeral.”
“We would like to share the playlist that Ryuichi had been privately compiling to be played at his own funeral to accompany his own passing,” Sakamoto’s team wrote in an accompanying message. “He truly was with music until the very end.”
Opening with an 11-minute track by Sakamoto’s frequent collaborator Alva Noto, the 33-song playlist features classical music from Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude Debussy, and Maurice Ravel. It also includes the work of renowned film composers Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota, jazz music from Bill Evans Trio, and David Sylvian’s “Orpheus” — the latter of which features Sakamoto himself on piano and synths. Tár, the third film from writer and director Todd Field, is a fictional biopic structured like a Greek tragedy: here we have a character of prestigious rank and fortune, brought down by something within themselves. Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett), the first female chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic with an almost impossibly illustrious career behind her, has knowingly committed harmful acts—she is a sexual predator and has abused her position of influence—and her downfall, painful to watch, is precipitated by a growing recklessness, a refusal to heed the warnings the audience can clearly interpret as signs of a coming storm. When the extent of her misconduct is revealed, Tár’s punishment is swift: she can’t see her wife or child, she loses her job, she loses her luxurious home(s), and she loses her status. The film has, for obvious if frustrating reasons, been primarily received as...

Cate Blanchett is wonderfully commanding as the sociopath musical megastar whose life is crumbling around her but it is the steely menace in Todd Field’s film that is simply delicious
The great crack-up of Lydia Tár, the Berlin Philharmonic’s entirely fictitious but docudramatically real-seeming chief conductor, has given the cinema its greatest spectacle, its greatest provocation and its greatest pleasure. If there is any justice, it will be producer-director Todd Field, with fellow producers Alexandra Milchan and Scott Lambert, who will be invited up on stage at the end of the evening to receive the climactic best picture statuette.
Cate Blanchett is wonderfully commanding as the haughty sociopath musical megastar, the monster who is disdainful of the philistinism and stupidity that surrounds her, the European-American exotic with the preposterous accent on the “A”. Blanchett also gives us something faintly preposterous, but seductive and intimidating in her speaking voice: resonant,...

This post contains spoilers for the first episode of "Star Trek: Picard" Season 3.
A notable new character on the third season of "Star Trek: Picard" is Captain Shaw (Todd Stashwick), the commanding officer of the U.S.S. Titan-a. The Titan has become a more notable presence in "Star Trek" media in the last few years, and the ship has been featured in several episodes of "Star Trek: Lower Decks." It was first mentioned in the 2002 feature film "Star Trek: Nemesis," which featured the marriage between William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis). In that film, Riker had finally been promoted to captain, and he and Troi were moving off of the Enterprise and onto his new command, the Titan.

This year’s Oscar race for Best Original Score is the most interesting and competitive in years. You’ve got surprise composers Son Lux (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Volker Bertelmann (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) going up against 90-year-old legend John Williams (“The Fabelmans”) and returnees Justin Hurwitz (“Babylon”) and Carter Burwell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”).
Which means there are several unusual components to this race. Four out of five films are Best Picture nominees (with “Babylon” as the outlier) and period pieces (with “Eeaao” as the contemporary multiverse entry), and there’s old-school versus new-school, with experimental rock band Son Lux taking on four celebrated vets: Williams has five Oscars and a record 53 nominations; Hurwitz has two Oscars for “La La Land” (score and original song “City of Stars”); and Burwell and Bertelmann have three and two nominations, respectively.
And not a clear favorite among them.

This article contains Tár spoilers.
For the last 10 minutes of Todd Field’s Tár, an elusive yet beguiling character study about an elite musician’s fall from grace, the fate of Lydia Tár remains a mystery. We know that Lydia, as played with an erudite augustness by Cate Blanchett, has been exposed to be many things: a sexual predator, a manipulative employer, and a relentlessly selfish spouse. Even her name is an embellishment, with the disgraced Egot winner returning to her forgotten childhood home where her estranged brother calls her Linda. In this context, it isn’t a stretch to imagine the accent mark on her surname is similar affectation—a pretension that reveals a flattering self-regard and overbearing pretension.
But after her brother surmises she hasn’t the faintest idea about what her life really is—accusing her of not knowing “where the hell you came from or where...

Brian Wilson is sometimes called the “Beethoven of Rock.” Of all the classical composers, though, there’s one that “makes the most sense” to this Beach Boys songwriter. Here’s what Wilson said about J.S. Bach, who he called the “greatest musical innovator.”

Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” sequel “Glass Onion” features an eclectic mix of characters, peeled back in layers by a fun murder mystery party that turns deadly serious. The eventual suspects arrive by boat on Miles Bron’s (Edward Norton) isolated Greek island for a vacation away from their champagne problems. Along with colorful outfits and a bright Mediterranean setting, a classic soundtrack accompanies the story.
Classical songs by Johann Sebastian Bach hint at the puzzling wooden box that serves as invitation to the group gathered in Greece. Several Beatles songs like “Blackbird” and the titular “Glass Onion” frame the mystery as well. David Bowie’s “Star” and “Starman” also shine some light on the subject. And let’s not forget the original “Hourly Dong” written and performed by the one and only Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Musician Janelle Monáe stars as the mysterious Cassandra Brand alongside Daniel Craig, who reprises the role of Benoit Blanc.

Jean-Marie Straub, the French director who created an influential body of rigorous political films with his late partner Danièle Huillet, died Saturday evening in Rolle, Switzerland. He was 89.
Straub’s death was confirmed by the French publication Le Monde.
In 1954, Straub met Huillet in Paris when she was a member of Cahiers du Cinema alongside Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette and François Truffaut. The two emigrated to Germany so Straub could avoid military service during the Algerian War.
The directing duo drew from literature and musical works by figures such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Bertolt Brecht, Franz Kafka and Elio Vittorini to hone an uncompromising form across a diverse body of work that committed to exploring historical fragmentation and Marxist analysis of class struggle. The pair formed a sentimental, fiercely creative partnership that has made its mark on global political filmmaking, with directors such as Pedro Costa and Thom Andersen citing the two as major influences.

Few scenes from writer-director Todd Field’s provocative masterpiece Tár have gotten audiences talking — and sometimes hotly debating — more than the first-act showdown between Cate Blanchett’s brilliant conductor, Lydia Tár, and Max, a student in her Juilliard master class. Shot in one white-knuckle take, the ten-minute sequence begins elegantly enough, with Lydia commanding the space in her typical way, a handful of impressionable music students attuned to her every utterance.
But then she hones in on Max — an affable young student played by Zethphan Smith-Gneist — who, it turns out, cares not for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. “As a Bipoc pangender,” Max offers, “I have difficulty connecting with Bach — and wasn’t he a misogynist anyway?” Thus begins a highly charged intergenerational face-off. “If you want to dance the mask,” Tár growls, “you must service the composer. You’ve got to sublimate yourself.

This article contains spoilers for Interview with the Vampire episode 3.
Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire episode 3 is called “Is My Very Nature That of A Devil,” and while Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) ponders the satanic elements, his maker Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) purloins the “devil’s music,” as jazz was called in its birth. The sound spread chord clusters and hot licks across the country, revelatory to listeners and revolutionary in its freedom. This mirrors the relationships at the center of the series, those between the two vampires, and their changed natures relating to regret and reconciliations. Vampires and music are dangerous, and precious.
One of the high points of the episode comes during the piano duel at Louis’ all-around entertainment club, The Azalea House. Lestat accuses the resident pianist Jelly Roll Morton (Kyle Roussel) of lazy playing, and repetitive vamps. This turns into a lighthearted,...

Procol Harum frontman Gary Brooker, who led the band throughout their 55-year history and co-wrote and sang their 1967 classic “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” died at his home from cancer on Saturday, Feb. 19. He was 76.
“His first single with Procol Harum, 1967’s ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale,’ is widely regarded as defining ‘The Summer of Love’, yet it could scarcely have been more different from the characteristic records of that era,” Procol Harum said in a group statement. “Nor was it characteristic of his own writing. This mix is a focus on moments of Johann Sebastian Bach’s neverending filmography that have stuck to memory. The opener belongs in my mind to Kinji Fukasaku’s Battle Royale (2000). “Air on D String” has over 30,000 titles featured on an IMDb search and I find myself thinking of Scorsese's After Hours (1985). Bach’s sound is sacred, a fact that two of cinema’s beloved philosophers, Ingmar Bergman and Andrei Tarkovsky responded to throughout their careers. This mix includes Bach in Persona (1966) and The Sacrifice (1986). The earliest use in horror, in Rouben Mamoulian’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) with the “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, Bwv 565” is now synonymous with the macabre. A piece which fans of Fantasia (1940) and Sunset Boulevard (1950) will recognize too. And an audience may feel differently about “The Goldberg Variations” upon watching Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of The Lambs (1991). The sounds of Bach...

A group of composers from seven leading shows on Netflix debated the challenges of mapping a musical score to the tone and narrative of shows from “Bridgerton” to “The Crown” to “David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet,” in a discussion led by TheWrap.
Aside from the steamy romance at the heart of Netflix’s Shonda Rhimes-produced Regency-era drama, “Bridgerton” is probably best known for its music, a very distinct mesh of classical songs by famous composers like Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi and instrumental covers of modern-day pop tracks by the likes of Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish.
The man in charge of bridging the gap between these very different styles, and coming up with the original score that would bind them, was “Bridgerton” composer Kris Bowers. However, Bowers gives a lot of the credit to showrunner Chris Van Dusen for having a “clear” vision for the sound of the period piece,...

The glimmers of hope that shine through the dank squalor of David Fincher's serial-killer masterpiece Se7en, which is turning 25 today, are so few and far between that we find ourselves clinging to them like life-rafts bobbing down a turbulent sewage drain. One of the library's security guards says, "We got culture coming out of our ass," and then they do, as the gentle strings of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Air Suite No. 3 In D Major" fill the golden-hued dungeon where Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) does his dark research. Similarly Brad Pitt's Detective Mills finds some peace at home playing with his beautiful lively puppies, all locked into a small room lined with newspapers where the dogs do their own important business. Happiness looks like it smells bad!

If you’re a fan of “Succession” and you have taste, then you most likely still have Kendall “Ken.W.A” Roy’s (Jeremy Strong) rap about his father Logan “L to the O-g” Roy (Brian Cox) stuck in your head. The song, the glory, and the second-hand embarrassment occurred during an episode that aired two weeks ago (“Dundee”), but just because we’re heading into the season finale doesn’t mean it will be forgotten anytime soon. Or ever.
That’s because the musical concoction was cooked up by the same man that’s provided us with the earworm that is the “Succession” opening theme and the rest of the series’ score: composer Nicholas Britell.

A Straub-Huillet Companion is a series of short essays on the films of Jean-Marie traub and Danièle Huillet, subject of a Mubi retrospective. Straub-Huillet's Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach (1968) is showing on Mubi from April 15 – May 14, 2019.When he met an eighteen-year-old Danièle Huillet in 1954, Jean-Marie Straub, also a mere twenty-one years of age, already had the project that would become Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach (1968) in mind, drawing inspiration from a fictional biography of Frau Bach by Esther Meynell; he immediately asked Huillet to collaborate with him on the script. Which is to say that the pair intended what ultimately became their third film—after the short Machorka-Muff (1963) and the mid-length Not Reconciled (1965)—to serve as a true introduction to their practice. All that is Straub-Huillet is there in Bach: The curious vitality of technically unaffected performers. The reverence for a text’s essence. The unpredictable, stop-start rhythm of the montage,...

Director Sofia Bohdanowicz found a series of letters written between 1957 and 1964 by her great-grandmother Zofia Bohdanowiczowa (a poet) to the Nobel Prize-nominated author Józef Wittlin at Harvard’s Houghton Library. Both literary figures were forced to leave Poland during World War II with the former heading to Wales and the latter New York City. Zofia would eventually cross the Atlantic into Toronto, the newfound proximity allowing them to finally meet after so much correspondence. You truly get an insight into their minds after being victimized by such a horrible genocide as well as the unwitting loss of freedom their being driven from their homes created. Beyond that priceless personal content, however, Bohdanowicz and filmmaking partner Deragh Campbell also saw the letters’ objective tactility and subjective potential.

Bill Murray brought his trademark lovable weirdness to Austin, Texas to mark the North American premiere of “Isle of Dogs” at the SXSW Film Festival. The Wes Anderson-directed movie was closing this year’s edition of the festival, and Murray had memorable appearances both before and after the stop-motion film’s screening.
On the afternoon of March 17, Murray popped up on the streets of Austin, Texas to perform a live rendition of Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem “Dog.” The actor was accompanied by a cellist performing music by Johann Sebastian Bach as he read the poem aloud in front of a group of tourists and festival attendees. Video of the performance has earned more than 62,000 views in two days.

"The experience is both transcendent and material." Grasshopper Film has debuted an official trailer for the 50th anniversary re-release of the music biopic classic Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach, first released in 1968. Directed by Danièle Huillet & Jean-Marie Straub, the film is a meticulously recreated look at composer Johann Sebastian Bach's life, as told from the perspective of his wife, Anna Magdalena Bach. It features spectacular sequences with multiple trained musicians recreating Bach's live performances, and is shot in black & white as well. Starring Gustav Leonhardt as Johann Sebastian Bach, and Christiane Lang as Anna Magdalena Bach. Grasshopper will be touring a brand new 4K restoration of the film to a few cinemas around the Us coming up. If you haven't seen it, this seems like the perfect opportunity to catch it. With an affectionate nod to Bernardo Bertolucci and Eric Rohmer, Luca Guadagnino has made the year’s best love story: “Call Me By Your Name.” The same sex romance starring Nyfcc Best Actor winner Timothée Chalamet (a breakout revelation) and Armie Hammer (who’s seductively feline) leads to something far more sublime than summer love. And it’s a movie in which desire and liberation blossom in the inviting and beautiful landscape of Northern Italy.
For Walter Fasano (Guadagnino’s go-to editor for 21 years), this dance of desire between 17-year-old Elio (Chalamet) and 24-year-old Oliver (Hammer) provided both an inner and outer poetry. “Our main intention was to let characters and the landscape breathe and not overwhelm with the editing,” he said. “At the same time, we wanted to have a control of the style and music editing for the ins and outs of shots because we did not want...
