Meryl Streep will receive the honorary Palme d’Or on the opening night of the 77th edition of Cannes Film Festival, Variety has learned.
Luring the Oscar winner is yet another feat for this Cannes edition, which will bring together a flurry Hollywood legends. Notably, George Lucas will receive the honorary Palme d’Or during the closing ceremony; Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” and Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada” are playing in competition; and George Miller‘s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and Kevin Costner’s Western epic “Horizon, an American Saga” are playing out of competition. Streep will be also in good company at the festival with “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig serving as jury president. The pair worked together on “Little Women.”

Exclusive: Matt Lanter (Jupiter’s Legacy) and newcomer Sophia Esperanza have joined Prime Video’s Motorheads cast in recurring roles, Deadline has learned exclusively.
From writer-showrunner John A. Norris, Motorheads is about first love, first heartbreak, and turning the key in your very first car. Set in a once-thriving rust-belt town that’s now searching for a glimmer of hope, the series is the adrenaline-filled story of a group of outsiders who form an unlikely friendship over a mutual love of automobiles. And while some characters will be navigating the hierarchy and rules of high school, others will be racing from a dark past.
The series also includes previously announced stars Ryan Phillippe, Nathalie Kelley, Michael Cimino, Melissa Collazo, Uriah Shelton, Drake Rodger, Johnna Dias-Watson, Josh Macqueen and Mia Healey.
Lanter will portray Darren, a wealthy and powerful father of 17-year-old Harris (Macqueen), who, like his dad, is a serious street racer.

Michael Cimino's "The Deer Hunter" is a scalding experience. Over three hours, we get to know a group of Western Pennsylvania steelworkers who are plucked from their blue-collar town and thrust into the confounding hell of the Vietnam War. These are not complicated men. Left to their own devices, they'd put in their 40 hours a week, and spend their free time either throwing back beers at their local bar or tracking deer in the Appalachian Mountains.
Cimino lets us get comfortable with his characters in their natural habitat, so that, when they're captured by Viet Cong soldiers, and, among other tortures, forced to play Russian roulette for the gambling pleasure of their captors, we share their bewilderment and outright terror. This is where "The Deer Hunter" also becomes a problematic experience. Though the Viet Cong unquestionably abused prisoners of war, there is no substantial evidence that they forced American soldiers to play Russian roulette.

Jane Campion, director of “The Power of the Dog,” is the recipient of this year’s Pardo d’Onore Manor at the Locarno Film Festival — its award for outstanding achievement in cinema. So yes, the “Dog” director is getting a cat trophy: Pardo d’Onore translates to “Leopard of Honor” in English.
The award will be bestowed on August 16, 2024 at the 77th edition of the festival. Locarno will also feature screenings of two Campion movies as selected by the director herself: 1990’s “An Angel at My Table” and 1993’s “The Piano.” It will be a brand new 4K restoration of “The Piano” that audience in Switzerland sees.
It’s quite an honor, but certainly not Campion’s first big award. She was the first woman to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival (for “The Piano”). Campion is also the first woman to be nominated twice for...

Oliver Stone is more than just a filmmaker. The man enlisted in the United States Army during the time of the Vietnam War and when he returned, he decided to tell the harrowing stories of war through the art of filmmaking. His 1986 film Platoon starring was one such film, but it could’ve ended up looking a bit different if actors like Keanu Reeves and Kevin Costner had agreed to be a part of it.
A still from Platoon (1986)
So why did they turn down a film that would go on to become critically acclaimed, do great at the box office, and receive not one, but four Academy Awards? Well, given the fact that the film was based on the Vietnam War and Oliver Stone’s firsthand experience with it, the topic might have been a bit too much for the actors.
Why Did Keanu Reeves and Kevin Costner Turn Down Platoon?...

Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from the wrongheaded to the correct opinion.
Earlier this year, the Criterion Channel launched a series devoted to films that have won Golden Raspberry Awards, or “Razzies,” prizes ostensibly created to recognize the worst that cinema has to offer. The idea of streaming’s most respected curator of film art showcasing a selection of Razzie winners was one whose time was long overdue, given the Razzies’ astonishingly reliable tendency to be on the wrong side of history; the list of nominations from any given year is typically more useful as a guide for suggested viewing than as an indication of what to avoid.

Joshua Logan’s Paint Your Wagon can be viewed as one of the last gasps of a dwindling Hollywood studio system, as well as a precursor to the New Hollywood. The film, with its expansive anamorphic vistas of the American Northwest, bears some superficial similarities to Michael Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate, which is often historicized as the end of the New Hollywood, given how it bankrupted United Artists. But in contrast to the profound sadness with which Cimino regards America’s history of violence, Logan’s musical romp takes a lighthearted approach to the process of resettlement, and it’s propelled by the contrasting personalities of Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood as bickering and tussling gold prospectors.
Paint Your Wagon straddles multiple genres at once, suggesting something like a western-inflected musical riff on Ernst Lubitsch’s Design for Living. The crux of the story concerns Ben Rumson (Marvin), a ne...

Oppenheimer took the top prize at the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night.
The film won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for outstanding producer of theatrical motion pictures, a day after taking top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Other big winners were Beef, which also won at the SAG Awards and Sunday’s Film Independent Spirit Awards, along with Succession and The Bear, both of which also won SAG Awards on Saturday.
Oppenheimer producer Emma Thomas accepted the theatrical motion picture award, noting that in a room full of producers, “This means so much coming from you, this room is full of people whose work we admire,” adding, “You know how hard the job can be, you also know how great the job can be; it’s the best job on set.” She also called director Christopher Nolan (who is also her husband) “the best producer you can possibly hope for.

Paul D’Amato, the actor who played the gloriously vicious Tim “Dr. Hook” McCracken opposite Paul Newman in Slap Shot, died Monday after a long battle with progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare brain condition that is similar to Parkinson’s disease. D’Amato was 76.
The news was shared online by his longtime partner (and fellow actor) Marina Re.
D’Amato got the role in Slap Shot in part because he could hold his own on the ice. He played college hockey at Emerson and also for a team called The Reds in a Burlington, Vt, league in 1975.
But D’Amato also had screen presence, going toe to toe with Newman as his character’s wild-eyed nemesis from the Syracuse Bulldogs who earned his nickname through his scalpel-like skills with a hockey stick. Newman’s Reggie Dunlop called out McCracken by name during a pregame radio interview, referring to him as the...

Paul D’Amato, who portrayed the despicable goon Tim “Dr. Hook” McCracken in the classic hockey movie Slap Shot and had a memorable scene in the best picture Oscar winner The Deer Hunter, has died. He was 76.
D’Amato died Monday at his home in East Brookfield, Massachusetts, after a four-year battle with progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare brain disorder, his fiancée, actress Marina Re, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“He was the most wonderful, sweetest guy, he fought so hard against this horrendous disease,” she said.
D’Amato also played a razor- and knife-wielding bad guy in Peter Yates’ Suspect (1987), starring Cher and Dennis Quaid, and appeared in other notable films including Heaven Can Wait (1978), F/X (1986) and Six Ways to Sunday (1997).

In his last dramatic and interminable years, Michael Cimino spent his days in solitude rewatching old movies in the Bel-Air mansion he bought during his heyday. On the rare occasions that he ventured out, he drove a Rolls-Royce he acquired while making The Deer Hunter in 1978, his chauffeur having left long ago, as well as his success.
Even in those final moments, he did everything he could to show a winning image to Hollywood, a town that had ostracized him ever since the colossal Heaven’s Gate fiasco that had bankrupted United Artists during the early ’80s. He had a perpetually ironic, scornful smile, but he was the first to know how pointless, even miserable, that act was. The only thing he had left from his triumphant years was some money, and he would show up at the hangouts of movers and shakers like the Polo Lounge, where he often ended...

There is, a critic will argue, a great deal of value in finding and discussing the worst films of the year. All the films released in a given epoch are a reflection of the trends and ideas that produced them, and scoring the bottom of the barrel for the worst filmmaking, the worst ideas, and the most misguided thinking will provide a valuable analysis of where we are as a society. Worst-of lists are important and vital and should be written with enthusiasm. They also let critics blow off steam a little bit; we don't have the luxury to skip bad movies or avoid talking about the ones we hate. It's our job.
The Golden Raspberries, or the Razzies for short, however, lost sight of that value a while back. The annual Razzies announcement is usually a snarky affair that only serves to pick on the year's least popular blockbusters,...

Some apotheosis of film culture has been reached with Freddy Got Fingered‘s addition to the Criterion Channel. Three years after we interviewed Tom Green about his consummate film maudit, it’s appearing on the service’s Razzie-centered program that also includes the now-admired likes of Cruising, Heaven’s Gate, Querelle, and Ishtar; the still-due likes of Under the Cherry Moon; and the more-contested Gigli, Swept Away, and Nicolas Cage-led Wicker Man. In all cases it’s an opportunity to reconsider one of the lamest, thin-gruel entities in modern culture.

When Willem Dafoe receives his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Jan. 8, the distinction will commemorate more than just a four-time Oscar nominee, but an actor so versatile that he has embodied everything from a conflicted messiah in “The Last Temptation of Christ” to the tortured father figure of “Antichrist.” Is there an actor working today with greater range?
With his deep-set eyes, sharp nose and broad smile, Dafoe has depicted his share of devils, from creepy “Nosferatu” star Max Schreck in “Shadow of the Vampire” to comic-book villain the Green Goblin in “Spider-Man 2.” But he also excels at the other end of the spectrum, as when he plays God in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” a Frankensteinian surgeon charitably committed to reanimating dead creatures, like Emma Stone’s Bella.

Robert De Niro has been working in Hollywood for almost six decades now, with eight Oscar nominations to his name and two wins. His most noted collaboration has been with director Martin Scorsese, with whom he has done 10 films, including their latest partnership on “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which was released October 20 through Apple Original Films. In celebration of the western crime epic, let’s take a look back at De Niro’s eight Oscar nominations in 45 years; seven for acting and one for producing.

Just like Brando, De Niro triumphed at the 1975 Oscars for the character, albeit in the...

Exclusive: Uriah Shelton has been cast as a series regular in the Prime Video series Motorheads from writer/showrunner John A. Norris.
Shelton will portray Curtis, somewhat of an outsider and a skilled young mechanic who crafted his motorcycle from scratch. He strives to keep a distance from the world of his older brother, Ray.
As Deadline revealed in late November, the series also stars Ryan Phillippe, Nathalie Kelley, Michael Cimino and Melissa Collazo.
Motorheads is about first love, first heartbreak, and turning the key in your very first car.

Had Michael Cimino not killed New Hollywood with the financial disaster that was Heaven’s Gate, he might have eventually unmasked the movement anyway, exposing this supposedly new style of filmmaking as nothing more than the old way with a dirtier face. His debut feature, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, illustrates this in spades: One of the many intended cash-ins on Easy Rider’s success, the film reverses the nature of other counterculture road movies. Though it begins with sweeping, Fordian vistas and ends in muted, existential despair, the film is less a deconstruction of Americana by the intrusion of the real than a study of human interaction that reinforces, if tragically, its classical formalism and iconography.
As such, the film’s pairing of old and young functions not as a commentary on the generation gap or the trading of an antiquated set of values for a newer one, but as a means of drawing out their parallels.

Amazon Prime Video will enter the ad space in early 2024. Except, in some ways, it has been there for a while now. And because of that, it already has a leg up on Disney — and definitely on Netflix.
Fast service Amazon Freevee has been selling video ads for years already, even before the former IMDb TV (launched January 2019) rebranded in April 2022. And Prime Video already had commercials during its “Thursday Night Football” games and awards shows; it also runs marketing ads for (Prime Video) series ahead of other (Prime Video) series and movies.
Amazon the company has been in advertising for considerably longer. (Amazon Ads has been around since the mid-2000s.) That branch of the business has been taking off as of late.
The Amazon advertising services group recorded $10.7 billion in ad sales from April to June 2023, up 22 percent from the same quarter in 2022. Ad sales represented 8 percent of...

The film festivals can always be counted on to deliver surprise hits at this time of year, but meanwhile Hollywood must deal with another issue: Its Barbitude hangover.
Barbie’s billions will importantly impact upon how decision-makers frame future strategies on budget, content and promotion.
The megahit could also cast a pink cloud over awards season: Will message-minded Academy voters levitate Barbie to the same somber stratum as Nomadland?
Further, will Greta Gerwig, its auteur, become a victim of the Tom Cruise syndrome – a filmmaker-star whose work we are encouraged to admire but not honor?
Complicating matters, the bizarre lure of Barbie clearly encouraged ticket buyers to rally behind another assured Oscar nominee, Oppenheimer. It’s hard to find a precedent for feminist frivolity stoking an appetite for nuclear terror.
As such, battles over Barbitude might open a unique opportunity for a reborn Golden Globes. If 300 or so Globe voters,...

Netflix’s Never Have I Ever ended its fourth and final season with lead character Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) at her dream college, Princeton, and with the long-awaited resolution of the series-long love triangle between Devi, Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet) and Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison).
Devi ends the show with Ben, with the pair cuddling together in Devi’s dorm room. The enemies-turned-friends-turned-lovers start off the final season having sex but after the awkward experience, the first time for both of them, they don’t immediately get together, with Ben dating art student Margot (Victoria Moroles) and Devi having a fling with bad boy Ethan (Michael Cimino). As their senior year progresses, Devi and Ben find themselves becoming friends again after not even speaking to each other for part of the fall, but it’s not until the final episode that the two finally couple up.

Netflix’s comedy series “Never Have I Ever” boasts a solid cast, but the added guest stars bring extra magic, whether they recur in their roles or only appear in a single cameo. Season 1 saw appearances from Atticus Shaffer (“The Middle”), professional tennis player John McEnroe, Iqbal Theba (“Glee”) as Uncle Aravind and more.
Seasons 2 welcomed Common, Billy Crystal and Tyler Alvarez to Sherman Oaks. Common played a love interest for Devi’s (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) mother Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan), and Billy Crystal helped ask a certain someone to the winter dance. Tyler Alvarez plays a child actor who catches Eleanor’s (Ramona Young) attention. Reese Witherspoon’s son Deacon Philippe, Sarayu Blue and more joined Season 3. Model Gigi Hadid and comedian and actor Andy Samberg narrate Paxton’s (Darren Barnet) and Ben’s (Jaren Lewison) lives, respectively. Actors Michael Cimino, Jeff Garlin and Dwight Howard joined Season 4 in guest roles.

Warning: This piece contains major spoilers for the final season of “Never Have I Ever.” If you haven’t watched yet, turn back now!
Jaren Lewison hopes the scene in Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” Season 4 finale where Ben Gross realizes he needs to profess his love to Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) becomes as iconic as Heath Ledger’s dancing in “Ten Things I Hate About You” or John Cusack’s boombox scene in “Say Anything.”
In the scene, Ben flies from New York back to California to tell Devi he “likes her,” nay, he “loves her” during Nirmala’s wedding.
“I’m really hoping that audiences respond to that because I think that’s the culmination of the last four years of every Ben and Devi moment, the first one being at Model Un when they work together. There’s a connection there, and Ben says to her,...

In our Q&a series Popsugar Crush, we get to know some of our favorite celebs' more intimate details - from their first celebrity crush to their best love advice. This month, we're crushing on "Never Have I Ever" actor Michael Cimino.
Michael Cimino may have made a big impression on Maitreyi Ramakrishnan's Devi in "Never Have I Ever"'s fourth and final season, but he still hasn't found a way into the cast's "family group chat." Although he doesn't mind since he can at least say he's worked on a Mindy Kaling project, despite never actually meeting her.
