Actor John Rhys-Davies is known for his role as Gimli, the dwarf warrior in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. The loud-mouthed elf hater is played to perfection by the Welsh actor in the fantasy-adventure films. Rhys-Davies was nominated along with the rest of the cast for the Screen Actors Guild Award and won for The Return of the King.
While the actor has played other roles in his career, he is also most well-known for playing Sallah, the Egyptian friend of Indiana Jones in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones films. Rhys-Davies was reportedly not the first choice for the role and the description reportedly needed a much shorter person. However, Rhys-Davies’ remark reportedly led Spielberg to change the character to suit the actor.

Two of the more anticipated star turns on Broadway this season — Steve Carell making his debut in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of Uncle Vanya and The Sopranos alum Michael Imperioli returning to the New York stage in Circle in the Square’s An Enemy of the People — got no love from Tony Award nominators today, and the West End hit Patriots, written by The Crown‘s Peter Morgan, barely registered on the roster, with only one nom for lead actor Michael Stuhlbarg.
Even more empty-handed than Patriots was The Wiz, the cheery, if rote, revival of the beloved Black retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Despite a star turn by Wayne Brady, it’s possible that Tony nominators saw the Broadway revival for the uninspired road show it is.
Other shows with zero nominations included I Need That starring Danny DeVito, the Barry Manilow-Bruce Sussman musical Harmony,...

"Who is Matilda Wormwood if not Carrie White without religious trauma?" This is a joke I made when interviewing "Abigail" directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett for the /Film Daily podcast after complimenting them on their decision to cast Netflix's "Matilda the Musical" star Alisha Weir as their titular ballerina vampire. "Matilda" is one of author Roald Dahl's most beloved characters, offering children both the fantastical wish-fulfillment of having telekinetic superpowers, as well as the ever-important message that reading is cool. The 1988 novel has been adapted multiple times across various media, most notably the 1996 feature film directed by Danny DeVito and starring Mara Wilson, the two-part BBC Radio 4 special, the stage musical featuring music by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly, and the Netflix film adaptation of said musical.

The TCM Classic Film Festival kicked off Thursday with a 30th anniversary screening of Pulp Fiction at the Tcl Chinese Theatre. Original castmembers John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman and Harvey Keitel reunited to celebrate the film, along with support from Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma, and daughter Tallulah. After making waves this week with news that he was changing course on his final film, writer and director Quentin Tarantino was absent from the event.
During a panel before the screening, Travolta described how when he first met Tarantino to discuss the film in the director’s Hollywood apartment, they bonded by playing board games from movies and TV shows that Travolta had starred in.

David Anspaugh's 1986 sports drama "Hoosiers" has gone down in history as one of the most influential sports dramas ever made. Partly inspired by the real-life story of the 1954 Indiana state champions Milan High School, "Hoosiers" focuses on formerly-disgraced basketball coach Norman Dale (Gene Hackman), who gets a rare second chance to prove his mettle at Indiana's Hickory High School. The rather tight-knit town of Hickory seems a little too unforgiving towards Norman due to his sketchy past, but redemption finds its way to him via a David vs. Goliath situation that soon transforms into a classic underdog tale about dreaming big and achieving the impossible.
Some of the more saccharine themes in "Hoosiers" might feel a tad corny at times, but it is a film that brandishes sincere authenticity when it comes to the magic of unexpected second chances and the highs and lows of small-town sports. Moreover, a...

We all know that The Penguin and Mr. Freeze appeared together at this year’s Oscars ceremony and that they faced their former nemesis, Batman, who challenged them to come at him. A confrontation was avoided, and this funny performance became one of the night’s best moments. However, it seems that some of those involved want more! Danny DeVito, who played Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin, in Tim Burton’s 1992 Batman Returns, recently said that he would like to go back to his role and tackle Batman once again, but this time alongside Mr. Freeze, who was played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, DeVito’s Oscars co-presenter.

"You waded out into the deep end, and now you're drowning right before our eyes." Vertical has debuted the full official trailer for the wacky stoner comedy titled Poolman, marking the directorial debut of actor Chris Pine. He shot this film in 2022 when the pandemic was still on, and now it's set for release starting in May in theaters. This initially premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last fall, but got terrible reviews (and even a few walk outs) from most critics at the festival. Poolman is described as a stoner riff on the noir classic Chinatown. It's about a hapless dreamer and would-be philosopher who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block in sunny LA. When he uncovers the greatest water heist, he does what he can to protect his precious city. Chris Pine also stars in this as Darren Barrenman, the titular "poolman", with Annette Bening,...

Lorne Michaels is an expert at celebrating the legacy of “Saturday Night Live.” The show’s creator has produced variety specials for the NBC program’s 15th anniversary, 25th anniversary and 40th anniversary, so the upcoming 50th season should have a highly entertaining spectacle. Nothing less than a three-hour event would be expected, but how else should “SNL” celebrate the golden anniversary season, which would begin in the autumn of 2024 and continue through May, 2025?
Here is our exciting, fun suggestion for a way to go above and beyond for the live special. Over the course of a 20-22 episode season, NBC would certainly have almost every episode featuring the current cast along with hot guest hosts and musical guests. However, for the other five episodes spread out over several months, devote an entire 90 minutes to each previous decade. Invite back the biggest cast members from a decade along with well-known guest hosts and music stars.

Michael Keaton recalls the initial reaction that comic book fans had when he was chosen to portray Batman in the 1989 Tim Burton-directed film.
Until then, Batman had been a character on a campy television series. However, Batman would mark a before and after for the superhero movie genre.
“When they said ‘We’re thinking of doing Batman,’ I said, ‘Wait, you’re thinking of making a movie about Batman?’,” Keaton said in an interview with GQ.
He continued, “The fact that Tim said ‘That guy, I want that guy’… the fact that people cared one way or another so much is still baffling. But that was a ballsy move on his part. We also had a nice working relationship from Beetlejuice, so he felt that he and I could get along and would work well together.”

Last month, on the night Real Estate released their sixth album, Daniel, they filled a tiny Williamsburg bar with all kinds of Daniel-themed props: name tags with the name “Daniel” on them, pictures of celebrities named Daniel, a full Danny Devito cutout. The album name had started as kind of a joke; they thought it would be funny to give the record a human name, and it just so happened that they’d recorded this new slate of songs in Nashville with producer Daniel Tashian, known for his work with Kacey Musgraves.

Last week, Max finally released the trailer for their much-anticipated The Batman spin-off series, The Penguin, teeing up its fall release date. Overall, it looks highly reminiscent of Matt Reeves’ film, with the cinematography very much in the Grieg Fraser mode. But what else do we know about The Penguin? More than you may think.
The Penguin is set after The Batman.
The plot of The Penguin is set to follow the title character, once again portrayed by Colin Farrell, as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham City criminal underworld. After the events of The Batman and the flooding of Gotham, including the death of Carmine Falcone, Cobblepot desperately wants to fill the power vacuum. Colin Farrell has also indicated that the film will serve as an origin story for the Penguin, something we have seen twice on screen before in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito.

And just when you thought Hollywood would shift away from the remake and reboot craze, news of another remake just arrived. In 1989, Hollywood legend Danny DeVito directed the satirical black comedy The War of the Roses, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. The film was based on the 1981 novel of the same name written by Warren Adler. The movie follows a wealthy couple with a seemingly perfect life that crumbles at one point, and the perfection soon turns into a horrible and outrageous divorce.
The original movie was critically acclaimed and was a success for DeVito. Today, 35 years after the original, it has been reported that a remake of the movie is in the making, with Jay Roach attached to direct. On top of that, some interesting casting information has been revealed.
Namely, alongside this, it has been confirmed that Oscar-nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, best known for his interpretation of a...

Three and a half decades post his initial portrayal, Michael Keaton unveils the narrative behind Tim Burton’s controversial decision to cast him as Batman ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
In a recent chat with GQ, Michael Keaton looked back on landing the role of Bruce Wayne in Tim Burton’s Batman flick, recognizing the initial uproar over his casting. Back in the late ’80s, fans weren’t sold on Keaton’s ability to pull off the iconic superhero, worried that his comedic background wouldn’t mesh with the dark character. Yet, Keaton has since earned acclaim as one of the top actors to don the Batman cape, proving Burton’s unconventional choice right. Keaton gave props to Burton for his gutsy call and shared some thoughts on his time filming the inaugural Batman film.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman will star in Jay Roach’s remake of The War Of The Roses, titled The Roses.
Another day, another remake is in the works in La La Land. Well, technically, it’s another adaptation of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel The War Of The Roses, but most people are familiar with 1989’s film adaptation, which memorably starred Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas and was directed by Danny DeVito.
The new adaptation will star Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as the central couple, who proceed with a very nasty, yet very entertaining, divorce.
Jay Roach has signed on to direct, while recent Oscar nominee Tony McNamara is penning the script. The film will simply be called The Roses.
The novel follows a couple, Jonathan (who was named Oliver in the 1989 film) and Barbaba Rose, as their marriage falls apart. In the 1989 film, Barbara simply realises she doesn...

If you say the phrase "war of the roses," chances are that most movie watchers will think of Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as a combative couple rather than any historical bobbins between the houses of Lancaster and York. But going forward, film fans may instead picture Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as the troubled pair, as they're starring in a reimagining of the William Adler novel that Danny DeVito brought to screens back in 1989.
Jay Roach, who has swung between comedy and political movies, is on board to direct what will this time be simply titled The Roses, with Poor Things' Tony McNamara writing the adaptation.
Cumberbatch and Colman will produce as well as starring as Theo and Ivy, who are seemingly living their Best Life. They've got successful careers, wonderful kids and an enviable sexual chemistry. But alas! Lurking underneath that seemingly perfect family façade is a tinderbox...

With Colin Farrell taking over the role as the Penguin and no doubt on his way to becoming the “definitive” version for a younger generation, he reflected on some of the other quintessential performances throughout the Batman franchise. And like so many of us, he put Heath Ledger’s Joker at number one.
When asked which performance in any Batman movie was his favorite, Colin Farrell replied, “I mean, Heath. Heath takes it, you know.” That’s about as good of a pick as you can have, as Ledger’s Joker is widely considered one of the best performances in any comic book movie, even earning him one of the few posthumous acting Oscars ever given. Colin Farrell has a pretty special professional connection to Heath Ledger, too, stepping in (alongside Johnny Depp and Jude Law) to fill in for Ledger on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus following his tragic 2008 death,...

Wak! Wak! Fans who wanted Matt Reeves’ The Batman to lean into the violence of Gotham City could be in for a treat when The Penguin arrives on Max. The spinoff series, starring Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, could find the classic villain breaking more than bones as he continues to waddle toward the top of Gotham’s criminal food chain. Speaking with MovieZine, Farrell said The Penguin is gnarlier than Reeves’ PG-13 Batman film and should be considered “incredibly violent.”
“It was a long and really wonderful experience,” Farrell said about filming The Penguin series. “It’s dark; that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark. It’s really heavy, I think— it certainly was doing it. Which is not to say I didn’t have fun, I had an amazing time doing it. It’s incredibly violent. It’s one man’s rise...

Colin Farrell returns to Gotham City as Oz Cobb, aka Oswald Cobblepot, in the trailer for “The Penguin,” a spinoff series of “The Batman” coming this fall to Max.
“The Penguin” takes place immediately following the events of DC’s 2022 blockbuster, tracing Cobblepot’s rise to power in the Gotham underworld as he becomes one of the most prominent villains in the “Batman” universe. Farrell gives a classic gangster monologue throughout the trailer, which slowly ramps up the violence and gunfights in Gotham City’s seedy underground.
“When I was a kid, there was a gangster, real old-school type. Rex Calabrese. He was a big deal. He helped people. He saw you on the street, he’d call out to you,” Cobblepot narrates in the trailer. “When I was 14 or something, he has a heart attack and dies, still holding a cigar. In my neighborhood, they throw a parade in his honor.

Hollywood stars Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger will be seen reuniting on screen after 35 years after the 1998 film ‘Twins’. DeVito has confirmed a new project is in the works with Schwarzenegger, reports people.com.
“We’re working on something, a project that we’re going to do together, another movie,” DeVito told CNN.
Of his bond with the bodybuilder-actor-politician, he shared that their friendship predated the 1988 comedy about an unlikely pair of brothers.
“Arnold and I are good buddies. We met way before ‘Twins’, years ago. We get along really well,” added DeVito, who also featured with the ‘Terminator’ star in the 1994 comedy ‘Junior’ with Emma Thompson.
The ‘Matilda’ star first teased a potential reunion with Schwarzenegger in November.

“House of the Dragon” Releases Dueling Season 2 Trailers
Are you Team Green or Team Black?
HBO has released two new trailers for the upcoming second season of its “Game of Thrones” spinoff series “House of the Dragon.”
The new trailers, which set the series’ return on the cabler and Max late this spring, respectively focus on Princess Rhaenrya Targaryen (played by Emma D’Arcy), Prince Daemon (Matt Smith), and their black faction, and on Alicent Hightower’s (Olivia Cooke) green King’s Landing team of Alicent.

From Disney darling to Academy Award winner, Brie Larson has carved a unique path in Hollywood. At just 30 years old, she has already acted in various movies, from small independent ones to big blockbusters. She even tried her hand at directing, with projects such as The Arm (2012), Weighting (2013), Unicorn Store (2017), The Dew Project (2021).
Her latest movie is The Marvels, in which she played Captain Marvel again. However, it didn’t perform well, partly due to criticism from fans who disliked the story or the villain. Negative reviews further compounded the issue, and there were problems with promoting the movie because of actor strikes.
