“The Good Wife” introduced Carrie Preston‘s Elsbeth Tascioni back in 2010. She was so popular with fans that she also featured in the spin-off show “The Good Fight.” Now Preston and Elsbeth take center stage in the brand new spin-off “Elsbeth.”
CBS’ hit drama series follows Elsbeth as she carries out work as an unconventional attorney and helps the NYPD catch criminals with her astute observations. Preston was excellent in her guest role in “The Good Wife” but she is even better here as the main course, as critics have noted.
Ben Travers (Indie Wire) observed: “Preston knows the exact pitch at which to play Elsbeth. Never grating yet always pesky, her unrelenting positivity (and general relentlessness) would undoubtedly get old, fast, in real life. Cops and criminals alike are exhausted by her, but audiences can more easily appreciate her dogged demeanor because a) we know she’s on the right track,...

When Andy Dufresne crawled to freedom through “five hundred yards of shit-smelling foulness” in The Shawshank Redemption, it was the ultimate act of hope. As the story’s tagline has it, “Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.”
As the movie turns 30, one small Midwestern town is throwing a celebration this summer — call it a big thank-you. Because filming took place over the summer of 1993 at the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield (population 47,000), a onetime manufacturing boomtown in north central Ohio, fans continue to flock from all over the world, eager to tour the former prison, which opened in 2019 as a museum.
Like the town, and like Andy, the movie itself went through a rough patch. Upon release in 1994, Shawshank was initially a box office flop. Seven Academy Award nominations, including best picture and best adapted screenplay, gave it a seal of approval. But then, steadily, by word-of-mouth,...

It’s been 30 years since a film from India has been selected in the main competition at Cannes, but that finally changed this year.
Recent editions of Sundance, Tribeca, and Toronto have included riveting and even Oscar-nominated documentaries and features. In fact, Mira Nair’s “Monsoon Wedding” won the Golden Lion at Venice more than two decades ago. Granted, Cannes has recently programmed South Asian gems in other sections, such as the Queer Palm-winning “Joyland” from Pakistan in Un Certain Regard in 2022, or Anurag Kashyap’s “Kennedy” in Midnight last year. But would the South Asian drought in the main competition ever end?
Many were ecstatic last month when “All We Imagine as Light”, Mumbai-based Payal Kapadia’s narrative directorial debut, was announced in the competition lineup alongside legendary Cannes regulars: European heavyweights such as Jacques Audiard and Yorgos Lanthimos, American auteurs David Cronenberg and Paul Schrader, and Asian visionary Jia Zhangke.

One of the most adapted authors in history, Stephen King yet has a significant experience with movies proving that he has developed his critical eye over the years of dealing with filmmakers.
Though he’s mostly known as a cinephile who doesn’t follow the mainstream preferring to crash the movies that everyone adores, King still left everyone bewildered when admitted he hadn’t enjoyed Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, but nonetheless gave it a credit saying there are some worse movies out there.
Several years ago King revealed that he’s not into “narcissistic stuff like Kill Bill” calling the film’s opening part a “blah movie”, but then proceeded with some kind of weird compliment for Tarantino’s hit saying that “isn’t a benchmark of awfulness” comparing it to Mars Attacks! or Mommie Dearest.

Back In Action: Cameron Diaz Returns After 10 Years Away, Starring In Netflix Comedy With Jamie Foxx
It's been a decade since Cameron Diaz last took to our screens, playing the villainous Miss Hannigan in 2014's Jamie Foxx co-starring Annie. But now Diaz is back in action in, er, Back In Action, Netflix's buzzy new action comedy. The Charlie's Angels and Shrek actor stars alongside Foxx in the film, which sees the pair play suburban parents with a big secret: they used to be spies! Check out the first images from the film below:
Hailing from Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon – who's written this one alongside Brendan O’Brien (Bad Neighbours) – Back In Action follows Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Foxx), two seemingly average parents who used to be elite CIA agents. Years after giving up spycraft to start a family however, the couple's low-key suburban life is upended when their cover is blown and they find themselves dragged back into the world of espionage. Cameron Diaz officially left Hollywood back in 2014, but she has seemingly changed her mind. Back in the day, the actress made her final appearance in a musical comedy film Annie where she starred alongside Jamie Foxx.
Ironically enough, Diaz’s first ever movie in 10 years will show her partnering once again with Foxx in Netflix’s upcoming spy action film.
Cameron Diaz’s big comeback to the screens will be featured in the streaming’s movie Back in Action. The title gives quite a big hint at the main plot twist as the movie follows two former CIA agents Emily and Matt who, after having left their careers beside, decide to start a family.
Realizing that their cover was suddenly blown, the characters are called back in action that roughly thwarted their plans.
Directed by the comedy genre’s expert Seth Gordon who helmed movies like Four Christmases and Horrible Bosses,...

The (Extra Hot) Cannes Hot List: Nic Cage, Kristen Stewart and Paul Rudd Films to Heat up the Market
The Cannes Film Festival is bracing for what could be its most disruptive edition in decades, with freelance festival employees threatening strike action that could derail the opening night ceremony, and the entire French industry on tenterhooks ahead of an expected new wave of #MeToo allegations against some of the country’s biggest stars, including a few with films in competition this year.
Well, at least the market looks promising. Judging by the number and quality of projects pitching at the 2024 Cannes film market (May 14-22), this could be a banner year for the Marché du Film.

Ron Howard has been part of our collective consciousness for as long as I can remember. Or at least he looms large in mine. Born in 1954, he was on many of the TV series I grew up watching and had his own starring role on “The Andy Griffith Show” by 1960. And his father had the idea that little “Ronny Howard” should play a good kid, not the wise-guy type popular in those “Dennis the Menace” years. He’d be nice. It stuck. He’s been known as “nice” ever since.
That made him much too easy to dismiss. However prominent he was — as a principal star of “American Graffiti” in 1973, top-billed “Happy Days” actor the next year and then as a director debuting with “Night Shift” in 1977 — we could take him lightly. By then I was reviewing films, and I overlooked him to a fault. I didn’t even give...

Everyone knows Mila Kunis as a brilliant comedy performer, because her name is strongly associated with such sitcoms, as That '70s Show with her role of the hilarious Jackie Burkhart and Family Guy, where she voices Meg, the eldest child of the Griffins.
After the actress’ roles in Friends with Benefits (2011), Ted (2012) and Bad Moms (2016), which are all comedies, it’s hard to imagine her in a dramatical setting. However, she totally breaks the canon with the 2020 shocking movie, now climbing Netflix’s top.
The film’s plot revolves around Kunis’ Molly, a 31-year-old drug addict on her 15th attempt at sobriety. It may sound really desperate, but this time she’s really willing to stop using heroin, and she’s trying to convince not only the audience, but her own estranged mother Deb (played by the accomplished Glenn Close) of that.

"They blew up Congress! Haha!" Do you remember this one? Or do you remember not going to see this one? Back in '96, one of the hotly anticipated movies of the year was Tim Burton's wacky sci-fi comedy Mars Attacks! He'd just directed Ed Wood before and everyone was waiting to see him take that zaniness and make his own alien comedy, opening in December before the holidays. But perhaps he went a bit too zany? Because this one bombed and most people hated it. The film is a parody of other sci-fi B movies. Earth is invaded by Martians with unbeatable ghastly weapons and a cruel sense of humor. Produced & directed by Tim Burton, but not written by him. Starring Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, and Danny DeVito, among others. The filmmakers hired Ilm to create the...

IndieWire caught up with Francesca Scorsese, who’s featured as an “Up Next” talent in Variety’s issue, on the event’s red carpet, where she reflected on working with Luca Guadagnino in HBO’s 2020 limited series “We Are Who We Are.” “He’s the most amazing, sweetest guy. Very eccentric, but that’s the best part about him,” Scorsese said. “It was really cool because I got to experience another filmmaker. You know what I mean? IndieWire caught up with Francesca Scorsese, who’s featured as an “Up Next” talent in Variety’s issue, on the event’s red carpet, where she reflected on working with Luca Guadagnino in HBO’s 2020 limited series “We Are Who We Are.” “He’s the most amazing, sweetest guy. Very eccentric, but that’s the best part about him,” Scorsese said. “It was really cool because I got to experience another filmmaker. You know what I mean? “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star Mariska Hargitay gave a powerful speech on Thursday in New York during Variety‘s Power of Women event, presented by Lifetime. The two-time Emmy winner, who celebrated 25 years of “Svu” this year, was honored at the event for her work as an advocate for sexual assault survivors.
Hargitay took the stage at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum following an introduction by her close friend, Glenn Close. After many years of acting, “she still finds the heart, the art and the power in her craft,” Close said of Hargitay.
With the New York rape conviction for Harvey Weinstein recently overturned, Hargitay themed her speech around the impossibility of reversing her own strongly-held convictions about listening to survivors and fighting back.
“I want to talk today about reversing convictions,” Hargitay said. “It’s impossible to reverse my conviction that survivors matter, that what happened to us matters,...

It is the spring of “Baby Reindeer.” Netflix’s addictive limited series about a struggling comedian (Richard Gadd) working at a bar who makes the biggest mistake of his life when he gives a lonely woman (Jessica Gunning) a cup of tea on the house is the most watched series currently on the streamer and viewership is growing. And the fact that it’s based on a true story, makes “Baby Reindeer” even more creep and chilling. It’s a must-see voyeur thriller.
The same was true in the fall of 1987 with Adrian Lyne’s “Fatal Attraction.” Audiences flocked to the hard R-rated thriller which starred a wild-haired Glenn Close as an editor with a publishing company who has one-night stand with a happily married attorney (Michael Douglas) whose wife and daughter are out of town. Though it’s “understood” that it’s just a fling, Close’s Alex just won’t let go.

“It’s so important that women like this are not forgotten from history,” declares Maisie Williams about her role as unsung hero Catherine Dior in the Apple TV+ prestige drama “The New Look.” Catherine was best known as a French Resistance fighter during World War II and who is often attributed as her brother Christian’s muse and inspiration for his iconic Miss Dior perfume that he launched in 1947.
For our recent webchat she adds, “if we’re going look at Catherine being one of the original muses of the Dior fashion house, you really have to understand how it is that she inspired Christian. And in order to do that, you have to really understand her life,” she explains. “I feel really grateful that more people are going to learn about her because she’s not someone that we think about when we think of the history of fashion.

The fashionable and evil Cruella De Vil graces collectors with her presence thanks to a new Darkness Descends Series doll from Mattel. This may be the best the One Hundred and One Dalmatians character has ever looked since Glenn Close played her in 1996.
The doll, priced at $100, will be available for pre-order at 9 Am Pt on May 6.
The best part of this doll is the packaging. While Cruella may be glamorous in doll form, the back of her box showcases the villainess we know from the classic 1961 film.

Speaking about the characters and the reality-based incidents that inspired his series, Gadd purposefully spoke about classic stalker films and how his show is different from them.

No one sets out to be an object of obsession.
On Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” when Martha (Jessica Gunning) enters the pub where down-and-out comedian Donny Dunn (show creator and writer Richard Gadd) works, she is looking downcast, like she’s trying to disappear. One simple cup of tea opens her up. It’s an act of kindness (or pity), but that’s all it takes for Donny to become her new fixation. Her interest in him unfolds in a montage of colorful outfits, badly applied pink lipstick and lies. She sends him tens of thousands of emails, ranging from the randy (“myy curtains r waitinfro yu they r readyy”) to the ranting (“i just had an egg”). She follows him home and sits outside his window for hours, pretends to be a hot-shot lawyer with politicians’ names in her phone and to own a penthouse in Belsize Park. Martha...

Exclusive: Jamie Lloyd, director of the history-making reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, reveals that his star Nicole Scherzinger initially “refused to consider” accepting his offer to play Norma Desmond in the show adapted from Billy Wilder’s 1950 classic.
“Nicole was not flattered,” he gasped, speaking to Breaking Baz backstage at the London theatre awards, held at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday night.
Lloyd says that the show’s “obviously associated with Glenn Close’s iconic performance and therefore people think about Norma Desmond being a much older woman.”
Mmm, that’s unlikely to amuse Glenn Close.
He tells me that Scherzinger, a one-time member of The Pussycat Dolls, called Norma Desmond a “has been” and stormed at Lloyd that she “still looks good under the bright lights.”
Lloyd encouraged her to study Don Black and Christopher Hampton’s book and lyrics and to listen to Lloyd Weber’s music.

The Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, also known as “the Oscars of Science,” is an awards show unlike any other.
Founded and funded by Silicon Valley titan Yuri Milner and his artist wife Julia Milner, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative co-founder Priscilla Chan, the Breakthrough Prize recognizes “scientists changing the world” with award statuettes and sizable cash prizes. And on Saturday night, at the ceremony’s 10th edition — the second in a row held on the roof of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, with the Hollywood Hills glistening in the background — presenters, performers and audience members included a collection of A-listers that could give the Oscars a run for their money.
One could turn left and spot Bill Gates and Robert Downey Jr. sitting at the same table, or right and find tablemates Bradley Cooper and Rupert Murdoch schmoozing.

And on Saturday night, at the ceremony’s 10th edition — the second in a row held on the roof of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, with the Hollywood Hills glistening in the background — presenters, performers and audience members included a collection of A-listers that could give the Oscars a run for their money.

The New Look's finale aired last Wednesday, and some wonder if a second season is possible. Creator Todd A. Kessler spoke about the drama's future in a recent interview with THR.
The biographical drama series, which stars Ben Mendelsohn, Juliette Binoche, Maisie Williams, John Malkovich, Emily Mortimer, Claes Bang, and Glenn Close, follows the life of renowned French fashion designer Christian Dior (Mendelsohn). Season one ended with the release of his 1947 collection.

Paramount Pictures had good reason to believe Adrian Lyne's "Fatal Attraction" would be another box office smash for the hit-making studio (which had just dominated 1986 with five of the ten highest-grossing movies of that year — including the top two in "Top Gun" and "Crocodile Dundee"), but they couldn't have anticipated the film becoming a full-blown, adult-skewing blockbuster. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller about an extramarital fling that turns into a waking nightmare for the happily married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) outperformed such heavy hitters as "Beverly Hills Cop II," "The Untouchables," and "Lethal Weapon" to become the second highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind the four-quadrant behemoth "Three Men and a Baby").
Why was the film such a pop cultural sensation? Every single element clicked perfectly into place. Lyne brought the sensual heat, James Dearden's screenplay tightened the screws with nerve-jangling precision, and the stars absolutely smoldered. Douglas and Glenn Close...

[This story contains spoilers from the first season of The New Look.]
The first season of Apple TV+’s The New Look ends with Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn) debuting his revolutionary 1947 collection that would be dubbed “the new look” by Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Carmel Snow (Glenn Close). The show then quickly flashes forward through some of the Dior brand’s iconic looks over the decades, which seems to suggest that the series is done with Dior’s story.
But creator Todd A. Kessler tells The Hollywood Reporter that he has a long runway planned for the series, which has yet to be officially renewed for a second season. A potential season two would continue to focus on Dior and Coco Chanel (Juliette Binoche) before subsequent seasons would stay with the Dior brand as it was inherited by Yves Saint Laurent.

Musical theater legend Patti LuPone may have sung her last show.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever do another Broadway musical cause I just don’t think they’re very good right now. They’re not writing for me,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t know if I want to do eight shows a week in a Broadway musical, but I would do a play in a heartbeat.”
From the age of 4, she knew she wanted to be on Broadway. A graduate of Juilliard, she won her first Tony for Evita in 1980, a second for her performance as Madame Rose in the 2008 revival of Gypsy and a third for playing Joanne in the 2022 revival of Company. TV fans know her from shows like American Horror Story, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Frasier, for which she received an Emmy nomination. This year, she’ll be seen in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries,...

The Las Culturistas Culture Awards, hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, is moving to the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn for its third annual show satirizing and celebrating moments in culture that could only be dreamt up on their podcast.
The ceremony, which will take place June 15, typically consists of 100 categories brainstormed by Yang and Rogers, with some mainstays including record of the year and the Cate Blanchett award for good acting. The “fake awards show” is meant to poke fun at the big awards shows of the year and has included musical performances, celebrity appearances and video acceptance speeches from the likes of Blanchett (a winner in her own category) and Taylor Swift (a two-time winner, including in the category of Best Taylor Swift).
As for whether Swift could be a participant in this year’s ceremony, Rogers and Yang are leaving the option open.
