Prior to his Academy Award-nominated performance in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, Mark Wahlberg, 52, was better known for his music career as ‘Marky Mark’. It turns out, though, that his past nearly kept him from being cast in the psychological thriller Fear (1996).
As it happens, Leonardo DiCaprio was considered for the role of David McCall, but the casting director felt he was not a choice for the part. Rather, he made a favorable impression on director James Foley on behalf of Wahlberg, with whom he co-starred on The Basketball Diaries. Later on, the two collaborated on The Departed.

Well, as one of Tinseltown’s most versatile actors, the father of four can now transition between comedic and action roles with ease. However, his breakout performance came in 1996, when he played the eerie antagonist in the big-screen psychological thriller Fear.

Let me give you my thoughts about love. I tend to side with famous Irish poet Oscar Wilde, when he says, “Never love anyone who treats you like you’re ordinary.” This is the basis for any successful relationship between lovers, most importantly during the honeymoon phase. Love sure makes us do crazy things for the people we care for most. But what is that limitation of crazy? And how far can it get before the significant others realizes this and wants to cut the cord for good? Sadly, cutting the cord may mean dire consequences for those that wish to end it. Let’s put that to the test and revisit two star-crossed lovers which is something out of any teenage girl’s dreams. But what if that dream soon warps into a twisted tale of horrific obsession, stalking, and manipulation? We’re talking about 1996’s Fear which is...

The "Frasier" revival show has wrapped up its Paramount+ run with a Christmas installment that, at times, manages to recapture the "Frasier" magic which has mostly eluded the series thus far. Earlier episodes have provided significant nostalgia hits by giving us a touching tribute to the late Martin actor John Mahoney, and a special guest appearance from Bebe Neuwirth as Frasier's ex-wife Lilith. But showrunners Joe Cristali and Chris Harris have saved the best for last.
The tenth and final episode of the new series, "Reindeer Games," not only sees the writers try their hand at a classic "Frasier" farce, it also features the return of Peri Gilpin as Roz, Frasier's former radio producer from the original series. Not content with just one major nostalgia hit, the episode also opens with the titular doctor sitting mournfully among his late father's Christmas decorations, which feature two specific items that appeared in previous "Frasier" episodes.

Harry Bosch is back where he belongs. After an earthquake rendered the Bosch character’s iconic home uninhabitable, he spent most of the first season of the spinoff series Bosch: Legacy living in temporary quarters with a far less impressive view. But in season 2 of the Amazon Freevee series, he’s back in his hillside home.
Harry Bosch’s house was red-tagged in ‘Bosch: Legacy’ Season 1 Madison Lintz and Titus Welliver in ‘Bosch’ | Hopper Stone/Amazon Studios
Prime Video’s Bosch often featured Harry (Titus Welliver) surveying the sprawling city of Los Angeles from his glass-walled perch above the city, jazz records playing in the background. His small but architecturally impressive abode was a fixture across all seven seasons of the show and helped give the noir-ish crime drama its uniquely LA feel. It also closely matched the description of the house in author Michael Connelly’s novels. In The Black Echo,...

In the NYPD Blue Season One episode “Tempest in a C-Cup,” cop Andy Sipowicz and prosecutor Sylvia Costas wind up on an impromptu dinner date. To call the occasion unexpected would be a wild understatement, as we were introduced to the characters at the very start of the series with a drunken, rampaging Sipowicz grabbing his crotch and calling Sylvia a “pissy little bitch.” But Andy is sober now, and Sylvia finds herself charmed by his company. After he tells her about the aquarium of saltwater tropical fish he keeps in his apartment,...

Thirty years ago today, on September 21, 1993, at 10/9c, NYPD Blue premiered on ABC.
However, its debut didn't necessarily mean it reached every household.
The controversial series premiered to apocalyptic fanfare, with critics wondering if the series would usher in the end of TV as viewers knew it.
It’s funny the things you remember from your youth. I was at the age where the idea of a series willing to push the envelope, delivering a taste of the big screen on the small, sounded like an excellent idea.
They say that all publicity is good publicity, but people around the country were so concerned about the effect the show may have on the morals of the everyman that 57 local stations around the country refused to air the premiere.
A month later, there were still 45 ABC affiliates who, due to the possibility of coarse language and nudity, were still not airing it.

Jeff Bridges is opening up about his health struggles.
In the latest issue of AARP The Magazine, on which Bridges serves as the cover star, the 73-year-old actor is candid about battling Covid-19 while undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in October 2020.
“I got this letter from the chemo place informing me I had contracted Covid,” Bridges reveals. “I had no immune system to fight it. Chemo had wiped that out, which made it really, really tough. For me, cancer was nothing compared to the Covid.”
Bridges was forced to be hospitalized for an extended period of time while he fought off both diseases, and while The Big Lebowski star is known for his laid-back attitude, he admits that had very real fears about never working again.

Exclusive: Filming on Season 2 of the FX drama series The Old Man, starring Jeff Bridges, is being suspended. We hear the crew of the series, produced by 20th Television, were alerted this morning of the decision to stop after today’s shoot, completing Episode 204.
According to sources, the plan had been to film through Episode 205 as five Season 2 scripts had been completed before the writers strike started on June 2. However, the last remaining script needed rewrites, so production will wrap now for the foreseeable future. It will resume sometime after the WGA work stoppage is over.
The set of the show in Santa Clarita has been picketed, causing some delays in production last Thursday. Accompanied by a producer, Bridges crossed the picket line in a van that day.

“I feel a little old to play the girlfriend,” confesses Amy Brenneman about her role in the FX spy drama “The Old Man.” For our recent webchat she continues, “What I love about this project is it’s a re-examination of all these tropes. It’s this masculine action hero. Ok, what happens when he gets old? I’m the girlfriend. But she’s got a lot going on too. Ultimately, it’s this examination of masculinity and hyper-masculinity. As the systems break down and international politics shift, what’s another way?” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“The Old Man” follows former CIA agent and fugitive Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) who is on the run from the FBI and assassins. Brenneman plays Zoe McDonald, a woman Dan rents a property from who gets caught up in the danger as they fall in love. She says, “Every single other person...

Almost 30 years after the original, Heat 2 is in the works from writer-director Michael Mann, with Adam Driver in talks to star as Neil McCauley.
As Deadline reports, Warner Bros. — which distributed the original Heat — is in negotiations to develop Heat 2 based on the novel of the same name Mann published last year (order here). The book, co-authored by Meg Gardiner, is both a prequel and sequel of sorts to the original story, offering storylines involving Heat characters that occur before and after the events of the original film. Driver will play a young McCauley (first portrayed by Robert De Niro), meaning his casting relates to the prequel aspect of the story.
No other actors have been officially linked to Heat 2, but its dual storylines open the door to several more names. While De Niro originally portrayed the career criminal McCauley, Al Pacino played Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, the LAPD cop who...

The Film: "The Leftovers"
Where You Can Stream It: HBO Max
The Pitch: Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta's metaphysical drama begins with a hell of a premise: One day, suddenly, 2 of the world's population disappears. The Sudden Departure, as it's called, is neither a clear-cut rapture event nor an easily explainable scientific one, but it is profoundly traumatizing. That trauma, which is both global and extremely personal, is the starting point from which one of the best TV shows of the 21st century builds.
Perrotta's novel serves as the series' starting point, and the first season follows two families in Mapleton, New York as they navigate their grief and aimlessness three years after the Departure. It's as bleak as it sounds,...

Michael Mann has been clear that 1995's "Heat" is a drama and not a crime movie. But even when the audience is in on the mystery from the very start, and knows what the criminals are planning, Mann is able to make the story compelling through the characters' cat-and-mouse investigation of each other.
As was one of Mann's goals for the film, "Heat" paints a full picture of the private lives of Al Pacino's Vicent Hanna and Robert De Niro's Neil McAuley. Consistent with the film's title, Hanna's escalating efforts to subdue McAuley drive the plot, with each constantly trying to outsmart the other. Only at great cost does Hanna finally catch McCauley. In Mann's other films, like "Thief" (1981), "Collateral" (2004), and "Miami Vice" (2006) — though he rotates between spending time with cops, criminals, or civilians — characters are similarly in regular search for insight into how their enemy operates.

Shonda Rhimes, head boss and creative for a litany of Shondaland intellectual properties, revealed on Good Morning America that out of all the IPs currently off the air, she would like to revive ABC‘s Private Practice the most. The Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, which originally aired for 6 seasons from 2007 to 2013 on ABC, saw Kate Walsh’s Addison transfer from Seattle to L.A. The series also featured actors Tim Daly, Audra McDonald, Paul Adelstein, KaDee Strickland, Chris Lowell, Taye Diggs, and Amy Brenneman. “I actually feel like we didn’t finish telling our stories on Private Practice,” Rhimes told GMA while promoting her new Bridgerton book. “We had so many more stories we could tell. I just felt like we had so much more to say with those characters and so much further to go, and that also felt like a show that had endless possibility.” Walsh’s popularity with...

Private Practice fans were shocked by the abrupt conclusion of the Grey's Anatomy spinoff in 2013.
Series creator Shonda Rhimes revealed on Good Morning America that she would be interested in returning the show to the air.
In a word? Whoa.
The series hit the air in 2007, with Kate Walsh's Addison Montgomery moving to a new location, complete with a wealth of new cast members.
The original cast included Tim Daly, Audra McDonald, Paul Adelstein, KaDee Strickland, Chris Lowell, Taye Diggs, and Amy Brenneman.
The show had strong ratings throughout its earlier seasons, but the numbers fell slightly at the end.
Taking a decade off has worked wonders for some shows, and given that Walsh currently appears in Grey's Anatomy in the role again, maybe ABC is preparing some sort of reboot.

"Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." In "Heat" that's the motto of professional thief Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro). Bank robbery isn't a career that leaves a lot of leeway for personal attachment. The rest of Neil's crew have families, but their leader lives alone; it's clear his new relationship with Eady (Amy Brenneman) is the first time in a long time that he's let anyone in.
As a lone wolf, Neil doesn't dwell in the quaint suburbs like his partners Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer) and Michael Cheritto (Tom Sizemore). No, instead he's settled in a beachfront bachelor pad with not even much furniture for company. If it wasn't obvious, director Michael Mann confirms that this setting complements the character; Neil's empty house is used to illustrate the loneliness of the lifestyle he leads.

Peacock has taken in for development Fear, a series based on the 1996 thriller film, from The Path creator Jessica Goldberg, Imagine Television and Universal TV, Deadline has confirmed.
Written by Goldberg, inspired by Imagine Entertainment’s 1996 cult classic film Fear, the modern series reinvention finds two young lovers in a psychological game of cat and mouse—but who’s the cat, and who’s the mouse? When David and Nicole first meet in Seattle, it feels like an epic, once-in-a-lifetime romance – but soon it becomes clear that the seemingly perfect couple is anything but. Told from conflicting points of view, the series wrestles with personal demons, hidden agendas and reframes the “he said she said” convention into a twist-filled suspense story about toxic relationships.
Goldberg executive produces with Imagine Television’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Lilly Burns and Kristen Zolner. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

There are several notable film directors who also compose music for their own work. Clint Eastwood springs immediately to mind, as does John Carpenter. Charlie Chaplin composed music for his own movies in the '20s and '30s, and the acclaimed Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar also constructs his own soundtracks. Often, too, pop stars and musicians will direct their own music videos.
Rarer, however, is the established, award-winning composer who moves from music into noted commercial directing. As far as this author can tell, Michael Giacchino might be the first.
Giacchino is, of course, one of the more prolific and high-profile film composers currently working, having composed the music for several Pixar animated features, winning an Academy Awards for his work on "Up." Giacchino also won a Grammy for the soundtracks to "Up" and "Ratatouille," and won a Primetime Emmy for his musical work on the TV series "Lost.

Editor’s Note: This story contains spoilers through Episode 6 of “The Old Man.”
Lymphoma was one thing. When Jeff Bridges, 72, learned the cancer diagnosis, he had shot almost four and a half episodes out of a planned ten of “The Old Man” (FX). It was the “Crazy Heart” Oscar-winner’s first starring role in a TV series. He had jumped on board the show from uber-producer Warren Littlefield right off the pilot. And then the pandemic hit.
“The world fell apart,” said showrunner Jonathan Steinberg on Zoom, tracing the rollercoaster course of the series leading up to the July 21 cliffhanger Episode 7 finale. “And then the writers and the world were coming back together again. But while we were making it Jeff got sick.”
Littlefield had first called showrunner Steinberg back in 2017 when he landed the rights to Thomas Perry’s new thriller about an ex-Afghanistan CIA operative who is unearthed...

While The Old Man Season 1 finale has yet to air — it’s broadcast July 21 at 10/9c on FX — we already know there is going to be a second season. The renewal came soon after the series starring Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, and Amy Brenneman premiered on June 16 (and was the most-watched FX series debut on Hulu — it streams the next day — in its opening weekend). The series is based on Thomas Perry’s novel of the same name and follows Bridges’ Dan Chase, who has been living off the grid since leaving the CIA decades ago. He’s flushed out of hiding when an assassin comes after him. The FBI’s Assistant Director for Counterintelligence Harold Harper (Lithgow) — working with his protégé (and Chase’s secret daughter) Angela Adams (Alia Shawkat) and CIA Special Agent Raymond Waters (E.J. Bonilla) — is called on to hunt Chase down because of their complicated past.

While Michael Mann is one of the most exhilarating filmmakers of the last 40 years, he does have a pretty undeniable weakness in his body of work: He isn't terribly great at creating female characters. What disguises this a little is he casts his women extremely well, from Madeleine Stowe in "The Last of the Mohicans" to Viola Davis in "Blackhat," but you would be fighting an uphill battle to claim any of these women are fully fleshed out human beings.
Michael Mann makes movies about men. They are men burdened by an overwhelming weight of emotional and psychological baggage that channel everything they have into...

Hollywood’s abortion-rights advocates have gone into overdrive — and opened their wallets in increased and creative ways — to support reproductive rights after the Supreme Court’s June 24 ruling that overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade.
Supporters, led by a 1 million donation from Lizzo and Live Nation, are amping up their giving to both long-established advocacy organizations and on-the-ground groups (especially ones that are helping women gain imminent access to health care), while using their celebrity and influence to inspire further giving. As pro-abortion advocates ramp up their donations, The Hollywood Reporter spoke with a showrunner, a manager/producer, an engagement officer at an entertainment law firm and the leader of an advocacy group for women in Hollywood about what organizations they are currently supporting in the battle for abortion rights.

Michael Mann greeted guests via video at a retrospective screening of Heat, saying he’d tested positive for Covid so had to stay away. Producer Art Linson and stars Al Pacino and Robert De Niro took the stage at the United Palace Theatre in Washington Heights without the writer/director of the iconic crime drama.
But not without a few words: “I’m incredibly disappointed not to be with all of you this evening,” Mann said in a recorded message. “At the Broadway Deli in 1994, I told Art, let’s produce my screenplay and find a director, because maybe I wouldn’t direct it. Co-creator Jon Steinberg and executive producer Warren Littlefield don’t much care if you like the characters that populate “The Old Man,” FX’s new espionage thriller premiering Thursday, June 16. Well, that’s not entirely fair. They want audiences to find them compelling and for viewers to invest in their textured lives and the increasingly interwoven web of high-stakes political games they’re playing. But above all, Steinberg and Littlefield want viewers to question each and every major player as “The Old Man” is hell bent on steering clear of traditional hero and villain archetypes.
The new drama, starring Jeff Bridges as the titular old man, revolves around Dan Chase, who absconded from the CIA decades ago and now lives off the grid. When an assassin arrives to eliminate Chase after all these quiet years, the older operative learns that to ensure his future he now must reconcile his past.

A compelling but uneven game of cat and mouse unfolds in “The Old Man,” Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine’s adaptation of the Thomas Perry novel of the same name. At the center are two former CIA agents, Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and Harold Harper (John Lithgow), who take turns as the hunter and quarry, as well as the “old man” of the title.
But while the FX drama deals in such dichotomies—predator and prey, hero and villain—it’s much more ambiguous about morality than its source material. “The Old Man” reminds us (and then reminds us some more) that being the hero of a story is often a matter of perspective; sometimes, it’s simply a matter of time.
When we first meet Dan, he looks well past his prime—waking up throughout the night to pee, enduring condescending bromides about aging from a new doctor.

Jeff Bridges, in his new series “The Old Man,” is playing the kind of spy they don’t make anymore.
His Dan Chase is, even at an advanced age, a master tactician; he repeatedly bests men many years younger than he is in hand-to-hand combat. He’s also winningly persuasive, so much so that the FBI counterintelligence chief tasked with finding him (John Lithgow) can’t resist giving him a head start.
Indeed, the aptly named Chase seems perpetually one step ahead in evading pursuit, and the show is similarly ahead of us at home: We find out just what has made Chase, and what makes the chase, as we go. While part of the CIA, Chase went rogue; he’s spent the rest of his life — before and after becoming a parent and then a widower — living under assumed identities and staying just out-of-reach of an angry defense apparatus.
