House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel series that debuted on HBO and Max in 2022 and is returning soon, focuses on House Targaryen, generations before the events of the original Game of Thrones series.
They are, of course, the ancestors of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), one of the main characters on Game of Thrones, whose series-long plot was about wanting to recapture her family's throne.
While House of the Dragon focuses on that particular family, we did get occasional glimpses of other familiar houses in the first season of that show, including the Baratheons. Also, there are fleeting mentions of Houses such as Arryn and Stark.
While the members of House Stark were among the most important characters throughout Game of Thrones, none of the Starks were major characters In the first season of House of the Dragon.
However, it appears that it is about to change.

Even though the show Shardlake is purely a work of fiction, a few of the real-life historical events it’s based on make it more intriguing. The Reformation in England under King Henry VIII remains an important part of the history of England, and one of the key players in executing the reformation was Lord Cromwell. Serving as the principal advisor to King Henry, Cromwell shut monasteries down all over the country. In this article, we’re going to look into the depths of this ruthless and inhumane historical figure, portrayed by the wonderful Sean Bean.
Spoilers Ahead
Why did Cromwell conspire to execute Anne Boleyn?
Historically speaking, it was Anne herself who promoted Thomas Cromwell to be the King’s advisor. Anne supported King Henry’s religious and political beliefs, and she was an active part of the earlier stages of Reformation. After Elizabeth I’s birth, Anne suffered...

It’s hard to believe that it’s already May 2024, especially on the TV front. We have standing weekly appointments with “The Sympathizer” and “Under the Bridge,” are still reeling from “Baby Reindeer,” and still can’t get enough of Kristen Wiig in “Palm Royale” — but there’s a whole new crop of May shows about to debut that deserve the audience’s dutiful attention.
May brings some big names back to TV, including Sean Bean with Hulu’s “Shardlake,” Jeff Daniels with Netflix’s “Man in Full,” and Benedict Cumberbatch with “Eric.” Joel Edgerton headlines Apple’s twisted thriller about a man unmoored from reality in “Dark Matter,” while André Holland plays Black Panther party founder Huey P. Newton in “The Big Cigar.” Many new shows are based on novels or articles, and on the reality front there’s “Love Undercover” — about soccer stars searching for romance; on the documentary side “Pillowcase Murders,...

To celebrate the release on Disney+ of Shardlake we spoke to Sean Bean, Arthur Hughes and Anthony Boyle about the importance of getting the period looks and tone just right. Starring Arthur Hughes, Anthony Boyle, Sean Bean, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis and Babou Ceesay, it is based on the internationally popular Tudor murder mystery novels by the late C.J. Sansom.
During the dissolution of the monasteries in the Tudor era Britain, Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) is sent by Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) to investigate the death of a commissioner in the remote town of Scarnsea. Alongside Jack Barak (Boyle) – one of Cromwell’s men – Shardlake vows to solve the mystery behind a series of murders that took place in a remote seaside monastery.
Shardlake will air on 1st May, exclusively on Disney+

The star of Disney+’s Shardlake has addressed having a different disability to the character he portrays in the C.J. Sansom adaptation, which launches today.
Arthur Hughes, who was the first person with a disability to portray Richard III for the Royal Shakespeare Company, stressed that Shardlake was always going to have a disabled lead – whether him or another actor – coming as debate rages over authentic representation in TV and film.
Hughes has radial dysplasia in his right arm, while the titular Matthew Shardlake is a crime-solving barrister with scoliosis.
Hughes said at a London screening: “I was aware that Shardlake has a disability that is not my own, and I wanted to find a level of truth in what I was doing and not necessarily affecting something that was not my own experience. We look at hunchbacks in film, and they’re often mad, kind of grotesque caricature kind of things,...

“I don’t think I’m projecting at all!” screenwriter Stephen Butchard tells Den of Geek about the crossover between modern and 16th century politics in new four-part historical crime drama Shardlake. “It’s the same. I don’t consider [Shardlake] to be period or Tudor, it’s about people and we haven’t changed and probably will never change. Power corrupts.”
Shardlake is set during Henry VIII’s Reformation of the English church – a classic case of corruption, says Butchard, in which money promised to the poor ended up in the pockets of the rich. When the king’s man is killed at a monastery, Thomas Cromwell sends lawyer Matthew Shardlake to investigate. Find the killer, says Cromwell, and find proof of the monks’ crookedness so we can shut them down… or else, is the unspoken additional threat.

Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. Out of battery. Out of signal. Stamped underfoot. Dropped into drains. Crime writers have found inventive ways to remove suspense-killing mobile phones from their stories, but no solution is as thorough as Cj Sansom’s. By setting his murder mysteries in Tudor times, Sansom’s 16th century lawyer Matthew Shardlake has to investigate without mobiles, forensics or DNA databases, armed with only his mind and principles. Or rather: his mind, principles, and the fearful reputation of his boss Thomas Cromwell whose name Shardlake draws “like a sword”.
This four-part historical crime drama is adapted from the first of Sansom’s seven Shardlake novels by Stephen Butchard, the writer who so successfully translated Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories to the screen in The Last Kingdom. If it lands well with an audience, there’s hope of many more series, each one a self-contained mystery for ‘the Tudor Morse’ to solve against...

In Hulu’s Shardlake, as in Arthurian legend, a hand emerges from a body of water bearing a sword. Though lacking Excalibur’s magical touch, this blade’s discovery does serve the ambitions of a monarch. After splitting England from the Catholic Church in 1534, King Henry VIII and his chief minister, Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean), have begun dissolving monasteries across the realm and seizing their wealth. The decapitation of Cromwell’s representative (Michael Rivers) at an abbey near the remote, boggy town of Scarnsea presents an opportunity to advance that crusade, with Cromwell sending an odd couple of agents to investigate the incident, commanding them to find sufficient reason to shutter the order.
In the third episode, the monks watch in horror as endearingly determined lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) and Jack Barak (Anthony Boyle), the cocksure enforcer assigned to accompany him, find the submerged murder weapon on their grounds.

Cj Sansom, author of the best-selling historical Shardlake novels, which have been adapted for TV by Disney+, has died aged 71. He passed away on April 27 after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2012.
Sansom’s publisher, Pan Macmillan, announced his death yesterday on X.
“I shall miss him hugely, not only as a wonderfully talented writer who gave joy to millions, but as a dear friend of enormous compassion and integrity,” said his longtime editor Maria Rejt.
Sansom’s Shardlake series comprised seven novels following the titular Matthew Shardlake, a barrister with a hunchback who solves crimes while navigating the political intrigue and religious tensions under Henry VIII. The book series drew on his real-life experience as a lawyer for the disadvantaged in Sussex, a profession he was drawn to after obtaining a PhD in history from the University of Birmingham. To watch Game of Thrones is to put oneself in the headspace of the people who populate its world. And what typically roams through their minds? Ambition, anxiety, fear, fury, and lust (we mustn't forget about lust) — fraught emotional elements that, once combined, resulted in turning Thrones into HBO's most popular series.
It's still remarkable how infectious the show was at its peak before the adaptable material dried up and its overall quality dimmed and later died. Example: In the penultimate episode of Season 1, when Ned Stark (Sean Bean) was executed on the orders of the cruel boy-king Joffrey (Jack Gleeson), viewers demanded satisfaction — nay, retribution! — alongside Ned's survivors. Tuning in for Season 2 was compulsory.

“Some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet are in prison,” promises Marie-Louise (Happy Valley’s wonderful Siobhan Finneran), the empathetic chaplain of a British women’s prison where first impressions give off a decidedly more dangerous vibe. Marie-Louise is the connecting element between the first two seasons of Time, creator Jimmy McGovern’s gripping behind-bars anthology. Nine out of 10 women won’t shut up—so I thought I’d have a bit of that.” The second season is at its best when its female inmates open up, venting after grueling and grisly encounters that make Orange Is the New Black look like a trip to Disneyland. Just as impressively cast as the first, this...

Completed yet shelved by Warner Bros Discovery, Snowpiercer season 4 will finally get an airing thanks to a deal with AMC.
Another victim of cost-cutting at Warner Bros Discovery, sci-fi series Snowpiercer was unceremoniously scrapped in January 2023 – a decision made after production had already completed on what was planned as its fourth and final season. Snowpiercer therefore joined the likes of Batgirl and Coyote Vs Acme in a grim list of tax write-offs at the studio.
There’s now good news, however: AMC has acquired the rights to Snowpiercer, and there are now plans to stream the first three seasons on AMC+ this year, while the fourth and final season will finally stream in 2025.
“Snowpiercer is an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride with a loyal fanbase – similar to the passionate fandoms we serve across our biggest franchise series – and a welcome addition to AMC and AMC+,” said AMC executive Ben Davis in a statement to Variety.

There’s light at the end of the tunnel for Snowpiercer, after all.
The post-apocalyptic drama on wheels was canceled after three seasons by TNT in January 2023, despite previously scoring a renewal for a fourth — and final — season.
At the time of the cancellation, the entirety of the fourth season was in the can, meaning that an ending had been filmed, but producers would need to find a new outlet to air the episodes.
Truthfully, we lost hope the episodes would see the light of day because it was the latest in a long line of financially driven decisions by Warner Bros. Discovery, which had already scrapped the already-completed Batgirl movie, among other things.
As the weeks turned into months, the chance of Snowpiercer securing a home to air its final-ever episodes looked bleak … until AMC stepped up to the plate this week.

Patience is a virtue, especially if you're a sci-fi fan.
When it comes to genre TV, science fiction and sci-fi adjacent programs are often saved when unceremoniously dumped by a network.
Jericho, Lucifer, The Expanse, and Stargate Sg-1 all found new life after cancellation. Today, Snowpiercer joins that list.
AMC Networks announced today that it has acquired the exclusive U.S. linear and streaming rights to all four seasons of the post-apocalyptic drama series Snowpiercer.
The first three seasons of the critically acclaimed drama will stream on AMC+ later this year, leading up to the series’ season four premiere on AMC and AMC+ in early 2025.
This should come as excellent news for TV Fanatics, as the show always drove discussion and fueled passionate viewers with much to say.

Snowpiercer’s final season will see the light of day after all.

The final season of Snowpiercer has finally found a home.
The fourth season of the sci-fi drama will air on AMC after the company acquired the rights to the Tomorrow Studios-produced series. It comes after TNT scrapped the show last year as part of a wider Warner Bros. Discovery content write down strategy.
Deadline revealed in January 2023 that the fourth season wouldn’t air on its original home, as part of a slew of content cuts that also including the axing of Batgirl, Abrams’ HBO drama Demimonde, and TBS series such as The Big D, Chad and Kill The Orange Bear.
It is the latest series that AMC has saved after being scrapped elsewhere; the network bought Captain Nemo series Nautilus after it was cut by Disney+.

Game of Thrones Writers on Ned Stark Scene (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are pretty excited about their new series, 3 Body Problem. Like GoT, which was based on George Rr Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, the upcoming Netflix series is also based on Liu Cixin’s novel, The Three-Body Problem. The GoT writer duo has teamed up with Alexander Woo for the sci-fi thriller.
For Game of Thrones, David and Weiss have worked together for several years. In an interview, David Benioff was asked how the scenes are in the writer’s room, considering Alexander has joined them for their Netflix series. In an interview with Pti, Benioff said that sometimes they all agree, which makes it easy to work. There are also times when they disagree, and they argue about it. When Alex joined them, they kept doing their thing.

Sean Bean has no clue whatsoever about the ending of HBO’s Game of Thrones. He led the first season as the Lord of Winterfell before getting his head cut off in the ninth episode. Since then, he never followed the story of the series.
HBO’s Game of Thrones
Season 8 was, indeed, the most controversial and critically panned installment of the famed fantasy show. Fans blamed showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for the lackluster plot and anticlimactic finale that apparently ruined the franchise.
Sean Bean Didn’t Keep Up With Game Of Thrones
Sean Bean once spoke with The Times and was asked about his opinion on the season finale’s ending. Surprisingly, he does not know what happened. In turn, he asked the interviewer what took place in the show.
The actor did not keep up with the hype after his character’s poor fate in the first season.

Kate Winslet championed intimacy coordinators in a recent interview with The New York Times. The Oscar winner said having an intimacy coordinator on set would’ve benefitted her every time she was required to perform a sexual situation on camera, be it more graphic scenes featuring full frontal nudity or far tamer scenes with just kissing.
“I would have benefited from an intimacy coordinator every single time I had to do a love scene or be partially naked or even a kissing scene,” Winslet said. “It would have been nice to have had someone in my corner, because I always had to stand up for myself.”
Winslet was far from the empowered actor she is now when she was just starting out in Hollywood and wishes she had the courage to speak up as a young performer during intimate scenes to say: “I don’t like that camera angle. I...

Exclusive: Intimacy coordinators could find themselves out of a job if they are indiscreet with the privacy of the filmmakers they work with, SAG-AFTRA says.
Following recent revelations about what went on in the filming of the Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman-starring Miller’s Girl, the Guild has tightened up its Standards and Protocols for the use of Intimacy Coordinators – especially when it comes to confidentiality. As a part of the stricter measures, any intimacy coordinator who does not adhere to the required standards could potentially be removed from SAG-AFTRA’s registry after an investigation by the Guild, I hear.

Orlando Bloom is hard at work on the set of his new movie Deep Cover, and he’s wearing a very unexpected costume!
The 47-year-old actor is currently filming the Prime Video comedy in London, England.
On Sunday (February 4), he was seen cuddling with an adorable puppy in between takes. Orlando was dressed in a long coat, which he paired with boots and a hat. He had the sweetest expression on his fact while looking down at his dog.
Keep reading to find out more…
Orlando changed into an elf costume on Thursday (February 8). While you might recall the actor playing Legolas in Lord of the Rings, this is a very different type of mythical creature.
This time around, he is embodying the sort of elf you’d see at the North Pole. However, he appears to be working for a local shop and is holding a sign advertising a sale.

It’s the battle of the TV Cromwells! On BBC One later this year, Mark Rylance returns in the role of Henry VIII’s right hand man in series two of Wolf Hall, adapted from Dame Hilary Mantel’s acclaimed novels. But before then, Sean Bean will play Thomas Cromwell in Disney+ British historical crime mystery Shardlake.
(Incidentally, if Bean wanted to dispel his reputation for playing characters who meet sticky, early ends, then his agent may want to get their head in a history book before forwarding the next script…)
Thomas Cromwell is a supporting role in Shardlake, a new four-part series adapted from the first in C.J Sansom’s successful mystery novels about Matthew Shardlake, a 16th century lawyer born with what would now be understood as scoliosis, and who investigates murder mysteries for the Crown.

Production is about to begin for the Prime Video original movie ‘Deep Cover’. The cast has been announced and it includes Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World), Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings), Sean Bean (Game of Thrones), Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso), Ian McShane (John Wick), Paddy Considine (House of the Dragon), and Sonoya Mizuno.

If you wondered what Colin Trevorrow was doing post his Jurassic trilogy, the answer probably isn’t what you expected. His next project is a script he’s penned with World collaborator Derek Connolly, plus British comedy duo The Pin, aka Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen (who made brief appearances in Jurassic World Dominion) – a starry comedy titled Deep Cover. And as far as it looks, there isn’t a dinosaur in sight.
The film revolves around a trio of improv actors who take part in police stings, catching out unaware criminals – but soon they get sucked into London’s criminal underworld thanks to the power of pure persuasion. Those three yes-anders will be played by Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Ted Lasso’s Nick Mohammed – and they’ll be joined in the cast by Sean Bean, Ian McShane, Paddy Considine, and Sonoya Mizuno. That’s a seriously stacked cast.
