After the conclusion of each Academy Awards ceremony, I always go back and rewatch the telecast from start to finish. I want to pick up on all of the things that I might have missed during my initial viewing. I especially like to study the nominees’ reactions each time an envelope is opened — particularly for the major categories when the famous five-camera shot is strategically displayed on the TV screen. I always rewind the moment that each winner is announced, so that I can carefully study the look on each individual’s face both before and after the big reveal.
As we all know, this year’s Best Actress race was the only above-the-line race with any real suspense. That it made it all the more fascinating when reigning Best Actress Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) announced that the torch would be passed on to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.

Since the inception of the Academy Awards, the U.S.-based organization behind them has always strived to honor worldwide film achievements. Their extensive roster of competitive acting winners alone consists of artists from 30 unique countries, three of which first gained representation during the 2020s. The last full decade’s worth of triumphant performers hail from eight countries, while 42.1% of the individual actors nominated during that time originate from outside of America.
The academy’s history of recognizing acting talent on a global scale dates all the way back to the inaugural Oscars ceremony in 1929, when Swiss-born Emil Jannings (who was of German and American parentage) won Best Actor for his work in both “The Last Command” and “The Way of All Flesh.” Over the next three years, the Best Actress prize was exclusively awarded to Canadians: Mary Pickford (“Coquette”), Norma Shearer (“The Divorcee”), and Marie Dressler (“Min and Bill...

Last year, Australian filmmaker Peter Weir was given an honorary Oscar for having “illuminated the human experience with his unique and expansive body of work.” Sadly, it’s now official that his filmography is complete, as Weir confirmed during an appearance at the Festival de la Cinémathèque in Paris that he has retired from directing.
Télérama reported (and IndieWire was kind enough to translate their report) that Weir was asked why 14 years have gone by since his last movie. Weir replied, “I am retired. Why did I stop cinema? Because, quite simply, I have no more energy.“
Born in 1944, Weir got his career started in television back in the 1960s, working on the TV projects The Life and Times of the Reverend Buck Shotte and Man on a Green Bike. After contributing a segment to the anthology film Three to Go, he made the 50 minute movie Homesdale and the documentary Whatever Happened to Green Valley?...

After movies such as Dead Poets Society, Master And Commander and The Truman Show, Peter Weir won’t be making another film.
This year marks the 21st birthday of a flat-out masterpiece of a blockbuster, 2003’s Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World. Not just because it has a great telling of the weevils joke in it, the Russell Crowe-headlined film is genuinely wonderful and deserves a 4K re-release.
It’s also just one of the many terrific movies from Australian director Peter Weir who, across a career that’s spanned decades, has given us features such as Picnic At Hanging Rock, The Truman Show, Fearless, Dead Poets Society and Witness.
His last movie was back in 2010, the Jim Sturgess-headlined The Way Back. Since then, Weir has been linked with a film called The Keep that obviously didn’t happen. Peter Weir was also set to direct Shantaram,...

The South Korean box office had a familiar look. Dark drama, “Exhuma” dominated the chart with a more than 50% market share for the fourth weekend in a row. And, for the third successive weekend, “Dune 2” placed second.
“Exhuma,” about two shaman, a feng shui master and a mortician who attempt to reverse the mysterious events happening to a U.S.-based Korean family, earned $5.80 million between Friday and Sunday. That represented a 67% share of the overall box office market, according to data from tracking service Kobis, operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
That lifted the film’s haul to $67.3 million after nearly four weeks on release. The figure is the highest this year by far and the fourth highest performance since the beginning of the Covid pandemic.

Peter Weir has directed some of the most acclaimed blockbusters of the last half century, often straddling the line between art and commerce with studio hits like “The Truman Show” and “Dead Poets Society.” But while the Australian director has not made a movie since the 2010 drama “The Way Back,” fans have held out hope that Weir might find his way back into the director’s chair — perhaps on the “Master and Commander” sequel that Russell Crowe has openly lobbied to make. But it now appears that Weir has officially walked away from filmmaking for good.
Appearing at the Festival de la Cinémathèque in Paris (via Télérama), Weir gave a blunt update on his filmmaking career that should squash any hopes that the 79-year-old director has another movie in him.

It’s a rare type of cinephile who wasn’t introduced to the idea of film as more than just idle entertainment by the ritual of the Academy Awards. And it’s an even rarer type of cinephile who didn’t soon thereafter vehemently reject the Oscar as the ultimate barometer of a film’s artistic worth. Those of us who started off with The Godfather, Schindler’s List, All About Eve, or Casablanca all eventually got around to Out of Africa, Around the World in 80 Days, The Greatest Show on Earth, Cimarron, and Cavalcade. First loves being first loves, we still find ourselves regressing if for only one night a year, succumbing to the allure of instant canonization even as it comes in the form of repeated slap-in-the-face reminders of Oscar’s bracing wrongness: Gladiator, Braveheart, Chicago, Crash. In that sense, consider this project part cathartic exorcism and part...

Karen Gillan offers a disappointing Jumanji 4 update, explaining that scheduling conflicts are keeping the movie from being made. The sequel's long development could prove troublesome for the franchise's future between the cast's varying schedules and aging out of their roles. Kevin Hart previously indicated that the next movie may actually be the last as he and Dwayne Johnson were discussing what their final collaboration should be.
With nearly five years gone since the last movie hit theaters, Karen Gillan opens up about why Jumanji 4 has yet to get off the ground. Loosely based on Chris Van Allsburg's children's book of the same name, the action-adventure franchise revolves around a group of teens pulled into the titular magical and deadly jungle world via a board game and video game in the later sequels, learning about themselves along the way. In 2007, director Ridley Scott joined forces with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe to create one of the greatest crime movies of all time: American Gangster. Scott retold the shocking tale of notorious Harlem crime boss Frank Lucas, played by the peerless Washington. Russell Crowe plays Richie Roberts, the detective fundamental to the downfall of Lucas, who later befriends the feared kingpin. However, it was not the dramatized elements of American Gangster that proved most horrifying, but the truth itself. The real story behind the terror will only enliven the story and give light to how one man once ruled New York's heroin industry.

From the original classic The Exorcist to Blumhouse's upcoming reboot of the same, the fascination with stories of possession and exorcism has not seemed to fade even though the overall template of these films tends to remain identical. Add to that a star like Russell Crowe and some budget, you end up getting a big-ticket horror film like The Pope's Exorcist. After directing Sylvester Stallone in his first superhero avatar in Samaritan, Julius Avery is back with another film with an A-lister steering the story. In the titular role, Russell Crowe dons the hat of a veteran exorcist who balances the act between faith and science while managing to sneak in a joke even in the most gut-wrenching situations. While the events depicted in the film may feel a bit larger-than-life bringing into question the factuality of the events, Crowe's Father Gabriele Amorth is very much inspired by a real-life...

After a healthy run of comedy and genre work, Karen Gillan felt it was time for a dramatic change.
Shortly before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s whirlwind press tour, Gillan returned to Australia where she shot Thor: Love and Thunder a couple years earlier, and joined the cast of Adam Cooper’s Sleeping Dogs, led by Russell Crowe. The twisty psychological crime drama follows Crowe’s retired homicide detective Roy Freeman, as his recovery from an experimental Alzheimer’s procedure prompts him to re-approach a murder case from a decade earlier. Gillan plays the enigmatic Laura Baines, the right-hand researcher to Marton Csokas’ Dr. Joseph Wieder and his memory reconsolidation therapy thesis.

“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is undoubtedly one of the greatest pieces of work in the history of cinema. J.R.R Tolkien’s books were considered unadaptable due to their complexity and scale before Peter Jackson stepped in.
Viggo Mortenson || Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
One of the biggest hurdles of any adaptation is finding the perfect cast. Picking the right actors who can do justice to the characters is a task easier said than done. "Noah" continued Emma Watson's poor Rotten Tomatoes streak since it has a 41 percent Audience Score on the website. The 2014 epic biblical drama received mixed reviews; critics praised it, but audiences disagreed. Watson redeemed herself in 2019 with "Little Women," earning critical acclaim and fantastic Rotten Tomatoes scores.

Noah expands upon vague elements of the Book of Genesis to create a more detailed, dramatic narrative. Changes such as leaving Na'el behind contribute to Noah's controversy among religious audiences. Aronofsky adds embellishments like The Watchers and Zohar to visually enhance Noah's story.
Darren Aronofsky's Noah is a biblical epic that translates one of the Bible's most important stories for the big screen, though some notable embellishments were made to the source material. Released in 2014, Noah starred Russel Crowe as the titular shipwright, navigating the woes of good and evil, divine judgment, and familial relationships in a developing world. The standout cast of Noah helped carry its relatively simple Old Testament story into success, even if the film made some dramatic changes to the original parable.

Pageantry. Screw ups. Touching tributes. Private beefs made public. There are plenty of reasons to watch the Oscars. But they all amount to partaking in, witnessing, movie history in its many forms — the high art, the gossip, the record-breaking moments when an arthouse director becomes a household name.
However, there are a lot of ways to set a record. There are big moments like Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King tying the record with 11 trophies or Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite becoming the first film not in English (or silent) to win Best Picture. And then, beyond those sit the oddities and records that are nearly impossible to break. Give me records like Walter Brennan winning three Best Supporting Actor awards because, as a former extra, he was popular with the Union of Film Extras, who were allowed to vote. At least, the story goes, they were allowed...

The results are in on the 2024 Razzie Awards, and it was a very big (but not necessarily great) night for one movie and one actress this year.
The annual awards show, which took place one day before the 2024 Oscars on Saturday (March 9), hands out awards to performers and movies that have been deemed the “worst.”
Going into the ceremony, Expend4bles led the pack of nominees with 7 nods in categories such as Worst Picture and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off of Sequel.
However, when it came time for the awards to be handed out, another movie swept the field, picking up five Razzies. One actress also won big, being named Worst Actress and Worst Supporting Actress.
However, one Hollywood icon received redemption this year!

Slasher film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey swept the five categories it was nominated in for at the 44th annual Razzies, which “honor” the worst of filmmaking. The awards were announced today.
‘Winnie the Pooh’ won the Razzie in the picture, director, screenplay, screen couple and remake/rip-off/sequel categories. The film, based on the beloved children’s literary character, follows Pooh and Piglet, who have become feral and bloodthirsty murderers. They terrorize a group of young university women and the returning Christopher Robin.
The Razzie Redeemer Award, bestowed on a past contender who has “gone on to better things” since being nominated for a Razzie, went to “The Nanny” actor and SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher for her leadership during the 2023 actor strike.
Drescher was nominated in 1998 for worst actress in the romantic comedy film The Beautician and the Beast.

The DC Universe's varied Superman depictions include iconic Fortress of Solitude appearances with differing success levels. Superman's crystal fortress, a tribute to his alien background, serves as a retreat for contemplation, training, and solitude. Modern adaptations like "Man of Steel" miss the mark by utilizing a spaceship rather than the traditional crystalline structure.
Superman's famed Fortress of Solitude has appeared in numerous live-action adaptations across both movies and television, often with varying degrees of success. The DC Universe has featured a litany of Superman depictions, many of which include his icy retreat. The location has even been teased in the Dcu's future, potentially appearing in the 2025 Superman movie.

Awards season tends to give movie fans all of the glitz and glamor that we love about Hollywood…That is, until it doesn’t. As is tradition, the weekend of the 96th Academy Awards also saw the industry honoring the worst in motion pictures, with the Golden Raspberry Awards aka the Razzies giving out statues to the likes of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Sylvester Stallone and Megan Fox.
While Expend4bles had the most nominations going into this year’s Razzies with seven, it was Blood and Honey – which popularized a hopefully limited trend of public domain horror – that won the most with five.
Here is the full list of Razzie Award winners:
Worst Picture
The Exorcist: Believer
Expend4bles
Meg 2: The Trench
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey – Winner
Worst Actor
Russell Crowe, The Pope’s Exorcist
Vin Diesel, Fast X

Gladiator brings Ancient Rome to life with rich historical depth and key figures like Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. Maximus Decimus Meridius is a fictional character inspired by real Roman generals and gladiators, symbolizing justice and righteousness. The upcoming sequel to Gladiator, starring Paul Mescal, tells the story of Commodus' nephew inspired by Maximus.
Released in 2000, Ridley Scott's Gladiator is an epic film about revenge, loss, and justice from the point of view of Russell Crowe's Maximus Decimus Meridius — and both the character and story have enough depth to make many wonder if Maximus was a real person and which figures from Ancient Rome inspired him. It tells the story of Maximus, a Roman general turned gladiator who seeks to avenge the death of his family after they were killed by the malicious son of the emperor, Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix). Though Gladiator features real historical figures, Maximus wasn't a real person.

Noah remains one of the most acclaimed biblical movies due to its stellar cast and Aronofsky's signature themes. Stellar performances from Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, and the entire cast make Noah a standout in Aronofsky's filmography. Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson, and Mark Margolis are also among Noah's big names.
Featuring a cast that includes some of Hollywood's best actors and actresses, Noah is filmmaker Darren Aronofsky's ambitious take on the classic biblical story of Noah, and his mission from God to build an ark that can withstand a ferocious storm. Although controversial upon release, Noah remains one of the most acclaimed movies about biblical events, and it owes that distinction largely to the strong performances of its cast.
Noah blends Aronofsky's signature themes of religion, moralism, and characters making complex decisions with beautiful cinematography and a sweeping score. Although the topics contained within Noah made it one of the...

We Oscarologists (ridiculous name) spend our time trying to read certain tea leaves to figure out what a potential Best Picture winner typically needs to win in order to take home the Oscars’ top prize. Best Director was once the most important category to excel in. Then it was Best Editing that we thought a Best Picture hopeful needed to check off. Then, recently, the combination of a writing Oscar and an acting win has proven to be a powerful one for eventual Best Picture winners. But what do the stats say? Well, we’ve combed through every Best Picture winner of this century and documented which other Oscars they won. We then tallied those figures up in this below handy chart:

“Oppenheimer” took home an impressive seven Academy Awards at Sunday’s Oscars, including the night’s top prize of Best Picture. The Universal movie also won Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy amongst a number of other awards. That is one below the total of eight wins we predicted for the film as “The Zone of Interest” beat the movie to win Best Sound. However, seven is still a huge tally and places “Oppenheimer” amongst the Best Picture winners to take home the highest amount of Oscars this century. Scroll down below for a complete list of every Best Picture winner this century ranked by total Oscar wins.

This year’s Best Actress Oscar race is perhaps the biggest head-scratcher of all of the main categories, becoming a make-or-break race for the fourth straight year.
It all began when Lily Gladstone surprised pundits with her move up to the lead category for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” then was halted by Emma Stone for “Poor Things” at the Critics Choice Awards (after both won Golden Globes in their respective categories). Stone continued to succeed at the BAFTA Awards after Gladstone was shockingly snubbed. And it seemed that she was on a roll to victory to her second Oscar, only to be stopped in her tracks at the SAG Awards by, you guessed it, Gladstone. This push and pull between the two actresses has created back-and-forth mania over who will ultimately win out, and even though Gladstone has overtaken the lead currently in the combined Gold Derby odds at...

Hans Zimmer isn't composing the music for Gladiator 2, with Harry Gregson-Williams instead scoring the sequel. Zimmer cites a desire not to repeat himself and stresses just how special the original movie is as his reasonings for not returning. Gregson-Williams has worked fairly extensively with director Ridley Scott on previous films, and he could incorporate Zimmer's themes into the sequel's score.
Gladiator 2 will be without the music of Hans Zimmer, and the composer now explains why. Released in 2000, Ridley Scott's Gladiator follows Russell Crowe's Maximus, a Roman general, as he is betrayed and sold into slavery. The film was a major hit and remains one of the most beloved movies of Scott's career. Zimmer's original score for Gladiator is one of the movie's greatest strengths, but Harry Gregson-Williams will be replacing Zimmer for the upcoming sequel, which stars Paul Mescal as Lucius.

Ridley Scott's career trend doesn't bode well for Gladiator 2, with historical epics being inconsistent at the box office. Gladiator 2's connection to the beloved original movie may help reverse Scott's trend of historical movie failures. While past historical epics haven't performed well, Gladiator 2's link to an established franchise could attract an audience.
Ridley Scott's long-awaited sequel Gladiator 2 will look to build upon the success of the celebrated original movie, yet the British-born director's worrying career trend doesn't bode well for the 2024 follow-up. 86-year-old Scott is one of the most acclaimed and influential filmmakers of all time. Beyond Gladiator, his cinematic legacy includes the likes of Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma and Louise, and Black Hawk Down – already marking him out as one of the most important directors ever. Yet despite his huge success, Scott's films haven't always been critical or commercial hits.

"The Beverly Hillbillies" is the platonic ideal of a high-concept sitcom hook. At its essence, it's simply "Poor folks get stinking rich and move to Beverly Hills." That's probably all CBS needed to hear from creator Paul Henning, who, between 1962 and 1971, exploited this simple premise to the tune of nine seasons and 274 episodes. During this span, "The Beverly Hillbillies" was one of the top-rated shows on TV.
How could such a simple premise, which was never really tweaked, sustain a series for nearly a decade? This question perpetually flummoxed the nation's TV critics, who generally loathed the show, but anyone who gorged on "The Beverly Hillbillies" throughout their formative couch potato years (during its initial run or via syndication) knows the answer is obvious: it's the cast, stupid.

Gladiator 2 star Paul Mescal claims it was a "no-brainer" for him to accept the lead role in the upcoming epic historical film sequel, securing his biggest break to date.
Speaking with AnOther Magazine, Mescal revealed why he opted to join the Gladiator sequel in January of last year, succeeding Russell Crowe as the franchise's main star. According to Mescal, the opportunity to work with award-winning director Ridley Scott and the "scale of film" made it impossible for him to turn down. "Gladiator comes across your desk and there’s no way you say no to it. But with this scale of film, and to work with Ridley Scott, it’s a no-brainer. Up until this point, there have been very few larger films that remotely interested me. It feels really right. And also there’s the capacity to learn," Mescal said.

“The Last Animal,” the award-winning bestselling novel from Ramona Ausubel, has been snatched up for film adaptation by production companies Walden Media and Big Beach.

“Last Animal” follows teenaged sisters Eve and Vera, unexpectedly spending summer vacation on their mother’s scientific expedition. When a movie claims that it is ‘based on a true story’, oftentimes, the directors prefer that the audience take this notion with a grain of salt. Real life, unfortunately, is rarely as entertaining as movies and adaptations often have to twist events and add plot points to make the story they are trying to tell, into the format of a script. Arcs are added, intentions are given, and depth is carved to make reality fit into the mold of cinema.
However, the question that arises is where does one draw the line?
Ridley Scott’s Napoleon
Ridley Scott’s Napoleon is the perfect example of a film that took creative freedom too far. In its pursuit of telling a good story, it twists the past to a point of no recognition. The change was so drastic that even historians got involved.

Pedro Pascal's comments hint that he may play a powerful character in Gladiator 2, possibly a member of the Roman royal family or an authority figure. While Pascal could fit the role of a gladiator, his description of the set implies a more significant role, possibly as a character running the show in the sequel. Pascal's versatility and potential as both a hero or villain make his role in Gladiator 2 highly anticipated, promising an exciting and engaging performance.
Pedro Pascal's character in Gladiator 2 is still unknown, but his recent comments about the upcoming film could hint at the type of person he will play. The news that the Madalorian and The Last of Us actor would be joining the crew of Ridley Scott's Gladiator sequel was undoubtedly exciting, but there has still been minimal information about whether he will be a hero or villain—gladiator or evil Roman politician.
