You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”
What is an Eggocc, you ask? Why, it’s Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice statuettes, of course. And as just alluded to, winning all four...

Brie Larson won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Room” in 2016. Since then she has worked primarily in major franchises — appearing in “Avengers: Endgame” and a handful of other MCU projects as Captain Marvel and in the “Fast and Furious” film series. The actress hasn’t really found a project to show the talent she displayed in her tour de force performance in “Room” until now.
She stars in “Lessons in Chemistry,” the Apple TV+ show based on the novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus. It follows Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a lab tech and chemist who uses her new job hosting a 1960s TV cooking show to educate housewives on scientific topics. The result is an entertaining period story in which Larson utilizes her distinct energy and impressive range to full effect. Larson injects Elizabeth with intelligence and heart but also zip, determination, and frustration in a well-rounded performance.

Jodie Foster is having a good year. The two-time Oscar winner returned to the attention of the academy for the first time since 1995 with a nomination for “Nyad.” Now, she and showrunner Issa López have revamped HBO’s flagging “True Detective” with the best entry since the show’s first season.
“True Detective: Night Country” stars Foster as an acid-tongue, spiky police chief who is tasked with investigating the disappearance of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. Playing a detective will naturally harken viewers’ minds back to her turn as Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs,” the film for which she won her second Best Actress Oscar (“The Accused” being the other). It’s her meatiest role in years and Foster devours it.
Brian Tallerico (Roger Ebert) observed: “Our unsteady guiding hand through this darkness is Liz Danvers, played with icy perfection by Jodie Foster.

“Severance” was one of the breakout TV shows of 2022. Its cliffhanger ending left fans eager to find out what happens next.
But Season 2 is taking a long time. There have been reports of production complications that slowed down the pace of work, and then the strikes caused delays.
Season 2 is currently filming, and no premiere date has been set. However, during a recent appearance on Roommates – a basketball podcast hosted by New York Knicks players Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart – “Severance” executive producer and director Ben Stiller gave a production update.

Looking back at Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 crime thriller Pulp Fiction we can all agree that the casting of John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Bruce Willis was top-notch, alongside the impeccable storyline. But what if we say, Willis was never on Tarantino’s long list of potential actors for the role of Butch Coolidge.
Nicolas Cage in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
According to reports, Quentin Tarantino suggested Sean Penn, Nicolas Cage, and Johnny Depp, for the iconic role. Suggesting a lengthy list of names ahead of casting, Tarantino wanted to star the above-mentioned A-listers in his crime thriller over Bruce Willis. But things worked in favor of the Die Hard star, as he eventually appeared alongside Uma Thurman’s Mia.

“Mary & George” is the delicious new historical drama from British playwright D.C. Moore, who swaps out stuffy history lessons for a raucous, bawdy ride that fans of “The Favourite” will love. Like that Oscar-winning movie, this limited series on Starz focuses on an era of British royalty that is little-known to American audiences.
Julianne Moore plays the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son (Nicholas Galitzine) to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) in an attempt to curry favor, power, titles, and riches in 1600s England. In the titular role of Mary, Moore delivers another powerhouse performance. She owns every scene she’s in and proves once more why she is one of the best actresses working today. Critics agree, “Mary & George” is the Moore show.

Patricia Arquette didn’t lose sleep over her nude scenes from David Lynch’s 1997 psychological erotic thriller “Lost Highway.”
Arquette, who played two separate roles — 1) an adulterer cheating on her jazz-musician husband (Bill Pullman), and 2) a temptress seducing a mechanic (Balthazar Getty) — said during Series Mania (via Variety) that she found a strip scene in the film “terrifying.” Arquette credited Lynch for scolding crew members who made “gross” comments ahead of filming her nude sequences.
“I was so extremely modest: I would take a bath in the dark,” Arquette said. “The scene when my character had to strip was terrifying to me. Some of the guys were saying crude things and I told David, ‘I am not comfortable – they are saying gross things.’ He said, ‘You read the script.'”
As Arquette recalled, Lynch immediately switched to, “Wait, who said what?”

The long wait is over: Patricia Arquette finally explained David Lynch’s “Lost Highway.” Kind of.
“I would ask David: ‘Am I playing two characters, am I playing a ghost?’ He would say: ‘What do you think, Patrish?’ It’s a woman looked at through the distorted view of a psychotic misogynist,” she said at Series Mania.
“He hates women, he doesn’t quite trust her, even though she is his wife. He kills her but can’t remember it, then he recreates himself as this virile young man and meets her again. And now, she actually wants to fuck him and she is in love with him. But even in this version, she is a dirty whore.”

Oscar-winning actress Patricia Arquette chaired a career masterclass this afternoon at Series Mania in Lille, France, where she served as this year’s guest of honor.
Topics up for discussion during the session ranged from Arquette’s childhood growing up on a “hippie” commune with her parents in rural Virginia alongside her career as an actress, working with filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Richard Linklater, and David Lynch.
“He gives you a lot of freedom,” Arquette said of Lynch, whom she worked with on his 1997 surrealist feature Lost Highway.
Lynch’s Lost Highway, like many of his films of the 90s, is a project focused on gender, sexuality, and sensuality. In the pic — which also stars Bill Pullman — Arquette’s character is involved in a prolonged nude scene. At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

When it comes to religious horror movies, filmmakers have long delighted in pushing boundaries, crafting tales steeped in blasphemy and the sacrilegious. These don’t just tiptoe around the edge of sacrilege; they dive headfirst into the abyss of the unholy. They challenge the sanctity of the sacred, turning hallowed ground into a playground for the profane and the demonic. This sub-genre of horror is not for the faint of heart, as it boldly questions and often subverts deeply-held beliefs, making it a thrilling ride for those who dare to question what’s held sacred.
From demonic possessions to unholy rituals, these films unflinchingly explore the darkest corners of religious belief and practice. They are the cinematic equivalent of forbidden fruit, offering a taste of the ultimate horror taboo: a forsaken, godless world. As we delve into the underbelly of religious horror cinema, we find a treasure trove of films that not only scare,...

Also counted here is Joaquin Phoenix, who originates from the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. Considering all 96 years of Academy Awards history, the rate of unique American acting victors stands at 68.1%.

Oscar week is finally here! Ask anyone who has been in the thick of awards season and they’ll likely let out a huge sigh followed by exasperated admission that this has been one of the most hectic runs in recent memory. The condensed calendar, forced by last year’s dual strikes, could translate to more lively bashes, however, as there’s light at the end of the tunnel with Sunday’s Oscars. That can only mean that champagne is currently popping at A-list bashes across Los Angeles, and The Hollywood Reporter is on the scene everywhere from Vanity Fair and Elton John to MPTF’s Night Before. See below for the roundup of all the red carpet action.

Most times, the Oscars broadcast goes off without a hitch. But other times, things happen that leave people talking about it for years — or even decades — to come. While surprises have been happening since before the Oscars were even broadcast — much less before the boom of social media — The Hollywood Reporter takes a look at the biggest viral moments from the last 10 years. Hollywood won’t forget about the streaker or Jennifer Lawrence tripping up the stairs, but those moments happened before 2014.
Adele Dazeem (2014)
John Travolta was set to introduce Idina Menzel before she took the stage to sing “Let It Go” from the Oscar-winning film Frozen. Somehow, he botched her entire name and introduced her as the “wickedly talented, one and only, Adele Dazeem.” Not only did it spark countless memes, but the singer-actress later said it was one of the best things that happened for her career.

Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn headline single location drama Daddio, and the first trailer has landed: more here.
It would be fair to say that Dakota Johnson hasn’t had the best month. It began with a press tour that seemed to be doing more harm than good in trying to promote Sony’s Spiderman spin-off Madame Web, in which her comments during the tour generated a huge amount of press. This was swiftly followed by a slew of vitriolic reviews – we gave Madame Web a firm but fair one star.
Still, Johnson has many films in the pipeline, the next one to be released will be single location philosophical drama Daddio. For reference, this is the film Johnson was talking about when she described Hollywood as “heartbreaking” and “fucking bleak” – a conclusion she came to because Daddio took “a lot of fighting to get made.”

Quentin Tarantino has dabbled in a variety of genres with his long filmography. One genre he hasn’t quite tackled is romance, although he makes the argument he’s done his version of a romantic film already.
Quentin Tarantino once revealed he’s already made both romance movies and comedies Quentin Tarantino | Andreas Rentz/Getty Images
Given Tarantino’s movies, the filmmaker’s taste in cinema might surprise some fans. The filmmaker once revealed years ago that some of his guilty pleasures were rom-coms. Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he confided that one rom-com in particular left a lasting impression on him. The Matthew McConaughey feature Ghosts of Girlfriends Past was a film that struck Tarantino personally.
“In that movie, he’s this sexy fashion photographer. Famous fashion photographer. Has a ton of girlfriends. He’s a real jerk. He’s known her for a while,” Tarantino said.

Exclusive: The public television series Pov has acquired Who I Am Not, the award-winning documentary executive produced by Patricia Arquette that explores “what it means to be intersex in a binary world.”
The film directed by Tünde Skovrán will make its broadcast debut this summer as part of Pov’s 37th season on PBS. Pov, produced by American Documentary, is the longest-running show on American television devoted to independent documentary films. [Watch the Who I Am Not trailer below]
Intersex people constitute an estimated 1.7 percent of the population, according to the Intersex Campaign for Equality, which the organization notes “makes being intersex about as common as having red hair (1%-2%).” Yet, intersex people have been largely invisible in most cultures. Who I Am Not combats that invisibility by foregrounding the experience of two intersex people in South Africa, a beauty queen and a male-presenting activist.

Harlan Coben’s “Fool Me Once” delivered quite the opening week as it managed to record 3.04 billion viewing minutes during the Jan. 1-7 viewing window and cracking Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 chart at No. 1. Amazon’s “Reacher” marked its fourth week among the top 10 titles following the release of Season 2 with another recorded 1.38 billion minutes viewed. That now marks the show’s fourth consecutive week recording over 1 billion minutes viewed. It's finally happening: we're getting another season of Severance.
Who knew a cliffhanger could keep us on the edge of our seats for nearly two years? It takes a crackpot writing team and a stellar cast to elicit the kind of response that the season one finale got out of its fanbase, and boy, does Severance deliver on both fronts.
The news we've all been anxiously waiting for is here. Season two is coming, and it's sure to be a doozy.
It may be because this millennial's first introduction to Ben Stiller was his three-film stint as Greg Focker, but his directorial deftness still exceeds expectations.
Plus, with a cast teeming with industry legends, it's no surprise that Apple TV was more than happy to gift us another season. So, without further ado, here's everything we know about what's to come for our friends at Lumon Industries.
Where Did Severence Season 1 Leave Off?...

Like many productions last year, Severance season 2 was brought to a halt due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but Ben Stiller took to X this morning to announce that filming has finally resumed.

Severance stars Adam Scott as Mark Scout, who leads a team at Lumon Industries “whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in ‘work-life balance’ is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself.”
Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, Dichen Lachman, Jen Tullock, Tramell Tillman, Michael Chernus, and Christopher Walken have all returned for the new season, with a few new additions as well.

Severance is “Back to work.” Director and executive producer Ben Stiller took to Instagram this morning to confirm that the Apple TV+ drama series had returned to production after a months-long delay due to the Hollywood strikes.
Stiller’s Instagram post, captioned “Back to work,” features a black-and-white photo of star Adam Scott running through what appears to be a hallway at Lumon Industries.
Severance had paused production on Season 2 in May when the WGA went on strike, which was then followed by the SAG-AFTRA walkout. With both strikes long resolved, production is now back on course.

Welcome back to Lumon.
“Severance” Season 2 has returned to production, which was delayed for months due to the Hollywood strikes.
Season 2 of the popular Apple TV+ thriller stopped shooting in May 2023 when the Writers Guild of America first went on strike against the studios represented by the AMPTP. The writers strike ended on Sept. 26, but by that point, SAG-AFTRA was 74 days into a strike of its own. Now that SAG-AFTRA has also reached a deal with the studios, everyone in Hollywood is cleared to go back to work, and “Severance” is back on track.

Paul Thomas Anderson is lining up the cast for his latest film, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Regina Hall set for the feature.
The film is set up at Warner Bros., whose studio’s picture group heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy worked with Anderson on his last film, Licorice Pizza, during their time at MGM.
Anderson wrote the script and is set produce the film with Adam Somner and Sara Murphy, who worked with the director on Licorice Pizza.
The logline for this feature is being kept under wraps, but it is due to begin filming soon in California. An ensemble cast is expected for the feature.
Licorice Pizza was nominated for three Oscars, including writing and directing for Anderson, and grossed north of $33 million at the box office. Anderson’s career Oscar nominations now total 11.
DiCaprio was last seen in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon,...

Exclusive: Warner Bros has Paul Thomas Anderson set to direct Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn as well as Regina Hall in an untitled film that will begin production this year in California. Anderson wrote the script, and he will produce the film with Sara Murphy and Adam Somner.
The film is currently untitled and they’re keeping the logline under wraps. We have learned that it is a contemporary setting and it is the most commercial one PTA has attempted, with commensurate budget. It came out of a relationship that Warner Bros Picture Group co-chairs/CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy built making PTA’s last film, Licorice Pizza, while they ran MGM. That film got three Oscar noms for Best Picture, and Best Screenplay and Best Director for PTA.
