- DirectorAgnès VardaStarsJane BirkinJean-Pierre LéaudPhilippe Léotard"I'll look at you, but not at the camera. It could be a trap," whispers Jane Birkin shyly into Agnès Varda's ear at the start of JANE B. PAR AGNES V. The director of CLEO FROM 5 TO 7 and VAGABOND once again paints a portrait of a woman, this time in a marvelously Expressionistic way. "It's like an imaginary bio-pic," says Varda. Jane, of course, is the famed singer ("Je t'aime ... Moi non plus"), actress (BLOW UP), fashion icon (the Hermes Birkin bag) and longtime muse to Serge Gainsbourg. As Varda implies, JANE B. PAR AGNÈS V. abandons the traditional bio-pic format, favoring instead a freewheeling mix of gorgeous and unexpected fantasy sequences. In each, Jane inhabits a new character, playing a cat & mouse game with Varda as they explore the role of the Muse and the Artist, all the while showcasing the multifaceted nature of Birkin's talent. "I'd like to be filmed as if I were transparent, anonymous, like everyone else," says Birkin. But her wish to be a "famous nobody" is impossible to achieve; Birkin is simply too magnificent, too mesmerizing. Here, Varda's signature mix of aesthetic innovation and generosity of emotion results in a surreal and captivating essay on Art, Fame, Love, Children and Staircases. For its first-ever U.S. theatrical release the film has been newly-restored from the original 35mm camera negative, overseen by director Varda herself.

- DirectorMadiano MarchetiStarsNatália MazarimRafael de BonaPâmella YulleA broken body in a white dress, lying lifeless in a swaying soya field. The image of this motionless body lends an extra charge to everything that follows. Marcheti follows three protagonists in turn. They don't know one another, but are all in some way connected through Madalena. Luziane, a club hostess, knocks on her door for money. Wealthy Cristiano inspects the vast expanse of soya fields for his demanding father. Trans woman Bianca and her girlfriends divide Madalena's things between them while reminiscing. Marcheti shot the film in the agrarian region where he grew up, capturing with great visual flair this largely unfilmed rural part of Brazil. A place where big agricultural machinery crawls monster-like across the landscape and the farthest corners are known only to drones. A world that can also take on a spooky aspect - now and then, Marcheti inventively gives an eerie twist to even the most everyday scene. Madalena is above all a window on a world that is getting out of control. But Marcheti is also clearly making a statement about his country, which has the highest rate of murder of transgender people in the world. A plea for empathy, rather than pity.

- DirectorFelipe BragançaCatarina WallensteinIsabella RaposoStarsCatarina WallensteinHigor CampagnaroHelena IgnezAna, a Portuguese actress, has come to Rio de Janeiro to play the lead in a film about Carmen Miranda, the eccentric actress and singer who put Brazil on the map for its samba and carnival culture. The characters in the story come to life by alternating black-and-white and colour film, but they are at odds with each other as the myth clashes with everyday reality. Felipe Braganca and Catarina Wallenstein (who also plays the lead role) address a generation of Brazilians eagerly searching for a new identity. References to the Tropicalism art movement and the celebration of 'cultural cannibalism' - which arose in part as a form of resistance to the military junta of the late sixties - also play a prominent role in this tropical nightmare. - DirectorMarcos PimentelThe current wave of political conservatism in Brazil is also reflected in a shift in religious forces. The traditional form of religion, Candomblé, is a blend of Catholic and African spiritual elements. These days, however, it is increasingly losing ground to the so-called neo-charismatic movement, an offshoot of evangelical Christianity that doesn't think capitalism is a dirty word. Religion commands the respect of the authorities, and the drug gangs are therefore using the religious movement as a form of moral money laundering. The militant and aggressive rhetoric of drug dealers turned pastors is also a good match with the gang culture of the slums. Fanatical supporters preach a "spiritual war" against the pernicious influence of popular telenovelas. New souls are easily persuaded by catchy gospel funk. The factional struggle is producing ever stronger polarization in the country and fueling increasingly violent conflict: after all, surely the Bible is above the law? Through interviews with adherents of both religions, pastors and gang members, Faith and Fury paints a shocking picture of this new reality, which is having a major influence on politics.

Through the artist's personal collection, rare archive images and testimonials from friends and family, discover a multifaceted character who portrayed his São Paulo in songs and radio characters. Having the city as an auxiliary, the documentary draws a parallel between today's metropolis and the one lived by Adoniran.
- DirectorPedro Soffer SerranoStarsGero CamiloAisha JamboGustavo MachadoThe film is based on lyrics from the very famous Brazilian samba composer Adoniran Barbosa, following the aesthetics of his time. Notable facts and characters of his songs takes us through the story, a portrait of São Paulo city in the 50's, a place full of music, love stories and gentrification (poor people getting evicted from their places in order to build great buildings), subjects often explored in Adoniran's work, always with a good touch of humor. This way he became the 'poor people poet'. Besides putting together in a surprising way stories that are known all over Brazil, the film is a great tribute to one of the most important musicians of the country. The cast is also very special, with names like Paulo Miklos (actor and guitar player of Titãs, legendary brazilian rock band) and Gero Camilo ( who's curriculum includes City of God, Carandiru, Man on Fire), and the soundtrack brings to the audience one of the strongest and most interpretative voices in Brazilian music: Ney Matogrosso.

In 2016, it won the championship of the Carnival of Rio with a parade in homage to Maria Bethânia, the diva from Bahia, who has a 50-year career and is Caetano Veloso's sister. The doc followed the creation of this carnival in all stages, from the first drawings and rehearsals to the construction of the allegories and the winning parade. Our crew also traveled with Maria Bethânia to Santo Amaro, her hometown in the interior of Bahia, discovering particularities that inspired the creation of this Carnival, such as her peculiar religious universe, which congregates candomble and Catholicism, the parties inherited from the slaves, and the openness of her house to the local community. As we tell the story of Bethania's hometown and the victorious carnival of Mangueira, we establish links between Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, focusing historical issues like the birth of samba, racism and religious tolerance.
