- DirectorArchie MayoStarsJohn BarrymoreMarian MarshDonald CrispThrough hypnotism and telepathic mind control, a sinister music maestro controls the singing voice, but not the heart, of the woman he loves. There's an odd lightness to this movie considering the subject matter. Barrymore hams it up as Svengali (known for seducing women and then compelling them to kill themselves), and Marian Marsh falls under his supernatural spell. The ending is somewhat telegraphed, and the fact that Marsh was only 17 when this was made is disturbing. The movie manages to be entertaining, but has a creepy tone as a result.
- DirectorCharles VidorStarsAkim TamiroffMarian MarshJohn TrentA millionaire is found murdered in his apartment. Suspicion falls on a variety of suspects, including his fiancé and her parents, the butler, and a professional mentalist known as The Great Gambini.Never mind John Galt, who is Martin Mills? This is an ultra-fun, above average B-movie that stars the Great Akim Tamiroff as Gambini, who is both a mind reader and a detective (of sorts). William Demarest and Eric Brophy have some great lines and humorous bits as the police in charge of the case. Tamiroff makes the most of this rare star turn, and Marian Marsh is fine as the love interest. One minor quibble is that Genevieve Tobin is directed as if she's on meth, and a lot of her humor falls flat. Overall, a quite entertaining comedic murder mystery.
- DirectorPhil RosenStarsMarian MarshGordon OliverMargaret DumontTwo strangers, a man and a woman, are framed for a jewel robbery and thrown in jail. After they get out, they join forces to track down the real thieves.I'm a soft touch when it comes to B-movies, but this one simply doesn't make the grade. Barely a crime-drama (a few scenes), it's mostly a boring melodrama. Even Marian Marsh can't save this one.
- DirectorPhil RosenStarsWallace FordMarian MarshSarah PaddenA wealthy woman has a murder mystery on her hands when her greedy relatives wind up dead after being invited to her home.Decent enough dark old house movie with some self-referential humor. Benefits from the presence of Sarah Padden, whose usual sly old fox persona fits the mood. This is one that will be benefited if you keep your expectations low.
- DirectorRichard ThorpeStarsMarian MarshBetty CompsonDon DillawayJennie Jones, a girl with a mysterious past, is engaged to her employer's son. His father attempts to destroy her life so his son will reject her. When all seems lost, help comes from an unexpected source, but complications ensue.Fairly compelling story that bogs down in the third act, but manages to come up with a satisfying (if rather obvious) conclusion. Betty Compson (not Compton) just about steals the film, but to say more about that would be drifting into spoiler mode.
- DirectorMarion GeringStarsRuth ChattertonOtto KrugerLionel AtwillBecause of a very unhappy affair she had earlier in her life, a woman shuts herself off from the rest of the world.Ruth Chatterton and Otto Kruger have great chemistry in this well-scripted soap opera that rises above convention thanks to the writers.
- DirectorMervyn LeRoyStarsEdward G. RobinsonMarian MarshH.B. WarnerThe City Editor of a sleazy tabloid goes against his own journalistic ethics to resurrect a twenty year old murder case... with tragic results.
