- DirectorDavid LarcherIt begins with a meditative, vibrating drone in the dark auditorium and ends with a word scratched onto the film strip: REFLECT - an invitation to viewers to think about what they have seen, but also the description of one of the many techniques used by David Larcher in his two-and-a-half-hour experimental film epic. Such dual and multiple meanings are a recurring motif in the film, as is the desire to decipher the foundational structures of cinematic perception. There is a fascination for the psychedelic expansion of consciousness and for the complex web of relationships between experience and memory - the film can be read as both a hippie-esque, elliptical diary film as well as an encyclopaedia of experimental image systems. "Mare's tail" is the term used in England for elongated, fraying clouds resembling a horse's tail that herald a coming rain. And just as one must learn to first see this symbol and then interpret it, David Larcher teaches us cinematic seeing in a kind of creation story of visual representation, which is at the same time a section of the director's own history, bathed in the period colours of late 1960s.

He keeps clippings of fashion models hidden in a drawer, daydreaming that one is in his bedroom clad only in a negligée. He imagines his barber is a blonde, and that the girl at the grocer's lures him to the back with the cartons. He chats up a nice bit on the bus; she moves to another seat... Tom takes the Tube to Piccadilly. He buys himself a Carnaby St. cap to go with his mod check jacket. But the clerk in the men's shop criticizes Tom's sartorial sense. Tom pictures three birds fawning over him as he tries on a suit, the same way they go wild when he sings lead with the band playing at the discothèque. Or so he could do, if he wanted... Tom meets a posh girl in a saloon bar. Perhaps she'll like one of those "sophisticated" Swedish films...

Mrs. Brown is a natural racer and has the potential to win. His four mates have bought equal ownership of Mrs. Brown. Their problem is that what little money they collectively have goes into the care and feeding of Mrs. Brown, which doesn't leave them enough money for race entry fees, and the ultimate race takes place in London. So they try to raise money by their band Herman's Hermits playing at any and every gig they can get. In their quest to get themselves to London and Mrs. Brown into the race, they get into one misadventure after another. Along the way Herman, whose neighborhood friend Tulip is in love with him, falls in love with model Judy Brown, the daughter of wealthy greengrocers and greyhound-race aficionados Mr. and Mrs. G.G.
