- DirectorLew LandersStarsOnslow StevensHelen MackVinton HayworthWealthy and superstitious race-horse owner Joe Baldwin practices philanthropy because he believes his charity donations bring luck to his ponies. One object of his bounty is gold-digger Jean Jason, about whom he has no illusions, and in order to get rid of her he finances her European vacation, and with her, unknown to Baldwin, goes full-time gigolo/part time artist Paul Vinette. Before a big race Baldwin is at an orphanage near the track and expresses his wishes for rain on the following day as his horse, "Sarcasm", runs best on a muddy track. The orphans resent his wish as it is also to be the day of their annual big outing, as does the orphanage assistant, Betty McKay, who chides Baldwin for his selfish viewpoint. It does rain but "Sarcasm" loses anyway, and Baldwin decides it was because the orphans were pulling against him. He arranges a big party for the kids and he and Betty fall in love. When Jean returns from Europe, she demands $50,000 to fade out of the picture. He tells her he will bring her a check. Paul sees Jean packing her bags, accuses her of running out, and they quarrel. She gets a gun and orders him out of the apartment and they fight for the weapon. Paul is leaving the building as Baldwin enters. A few minutes later, the police receive a call from a man claiming to be Joe Baldwin who says he has just killed Jean Jason. Baldwin is arrested and convicted on circumstantial evidence and sentenced to death. He escapes the police and goes into hiding in the home of a taxicab driver, Frank Bent, he had once befriended. Baldwin, with the aid of Bent and Betty, start the process of proving his innocence and also finding the real killer.
- DirectorLew LandersStarsSally EilersRobert ArmstrongFrances SageLen Kendrick, whose father J. P. owns Amalgamated Air Lines, breaks a cross-country flying record and is cheered by a crowd of fans as he lands at the airline's Portland, Oregon airport. In the crowd are Kay Armstrong, an Amalgamated stewardess who is dating Wad Madison, a veteran pilot, and her sister Penny. Although the playboy Len prefers Kay, he goes out with Penny, who eventually follows him to New York on the pretext of furthering her show business career. While Kay grows frustrated by Wad's fanatical dedication to flying, Penny is dismayed by Len's heavy drinking. In spite of Penny's warnings, Len violates an aviation rule that stipulates that pilots should not fly within twenty-four hours of imbibing alcohol and makes a flight after a night of drinking. During the trip, Len experiences mechanical trouble but bails out just before the airplane crashes. His co-pilot, however, is killed. After bribing a bartender, Len is cleared of suspicion in the crash but is rejected by Penny. Broke, Len returns to Portland to fly for his father, who convinces Wad to abandon his plans to marry Kay and tutor Len. Oblivious to Wad, Len begins to romance Kay, who is impressed by the younger pilot's easy charm. When a jealous Wad finds Len drunk at Kay's apartment, he criticizes Kay for encouraging Len's bad habits. Resentful of Wad's possessiveness, Kay snubs him and, during a flying lesson, rejects his marriage proposal. Kay then writes to Penny, asking her advice about marrying Len, unaware of her sister's previous involvement with him. Concerned, Penny flies to Portland and meets secretly with Len to ask him to end his affair with Kay or have his crimes exposed. When he refuses to comply, Penny starts to telephone Kay, but is slugged by Len and fractures her skull on his mantle-piece. Leaving Penny unconscious, Len rushes to his next flight to Salt Lake City and asks Kay to marry him as soon as they land. By the time they reach Salt Lake City, however, Kay receives word that Penny is in the hospital and demands that they take Wad's flight back to Portland. When the airplane experiences engine trouble, Wad prepares to make an emergency landing, but Len locks him out of the cockpit and flies the craft to Portland. Accused publicly by Len of cowardice, Wad punches his rival and is fired by Kendrick. Wad then visits Penny, who is recuperating from surgery, and learns the truth about Len. Terrified, Wad dashes to the airport, where he hears that Len and Penny's flight to Salt Lake City has been trapped in a blizzard for hours. Eventually Wad connects with Len via radio and orders him to land, but Len, who has knocked out his co-pilot, chooses to jump rather than face a possible crash. After Len's parachute fails to open, Kay takes over the controls and, by following Wad's instructions, makes a safe emergency landing. Hailed as heroes, Kay and Wad, who has been re-hired by Kendrick, embrace.

Bitter about being passed over, Tanahill and his secretary, Vida (Mary Astor), plot to keep Chris from interacting directly with the workers. With Tanahill's encouragement, Chris spends his time golfing and monitoring progress on the construction of his expensive new house. His old friends in the mill feel abandoned. The men are angry that they must work overtime for no extra money to repair a mistake that Chris failed to catch. But Chris knows only what Tanahill tells him, or fails to tell him, and Tanahill successfully creates a toxic relationship between Bennett and the factory workers. After the job is finished, the workers ask to go back on regular time, but Tanahill lies and tells the workers that Chris has ordered the new hours to continue indefinitely. The men become agitated and walk out, then when the gates are locked behind them they view that as further evidence that they are being abused, and they begin throwing rocks and breaking windows. Tanahill calls the police. Chris is pulled away from a housewarming party at his new home and he arrives at the mill to confront the men. He tells them he didn't post the order about continuing indefinitely with the work schedule. They think he's lying and goad him into coming out from behind the gate. Chris goes outside the gate and warns the men to quit protesting or the police may hurt some of them. They don't listen and Chris is forced to defend himself when several of them attack him. He's knocked unconscious before the police arrive and disperse the mob. As Bennett is revived inside the Mill office, the boiler mechanic, Collins (John Qualen), asked him to confirm what he knew about the problems in the mill, and what orders he'd issued. When it's apparent that Tanahill was at the heart of creating an atmosphere of miscommunication and mistrust, Collins punches out Tanahill, and tells the others assembled, "let that be a lesson to you guys, to punch the right man the next time."
