Loved List: Ones That Give Me Feels
Lots of films are good, but this is my list of the ones I'm especially fond of, some of these I haven't seen in a long time, some I haven't loved as long as others, but these are all films that have moved and inspired me. As of 22nd Oct 2022, I have no qualms about saying these are my favorite films of all time, I realize that the enjoyment of film is subjective, any films included are ones that I think hit the nail on the head between impressive cinematography, entertainment, but also adding a fresh perspective of what we call life. As of February 2023, this list has been enhanced to also include films that I deem exceptional(*).

- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice. The film that started it all, the first film that made me truly appreciate the qualities of cinema, from it's cinematography, lighting, score and even its flawed morality and questioning of the human condition, this is always the film I call my favourite
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsMalcolm McDowellPatrick MageeMichael BatesIn the future, a sadistic gang leader is imprisoned and volunteers for a conduct-aversion experiment, but it doesn't go as planned.Isn't this in everyone's loved list? Despite all the controversy (is it even present anymore, arguable either way) I still think this should be upheld as a true classic, ahead of it's time, timeless, relatable on many different levels and boasts great characters, cinematography and sets, Kubrick's gem
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsHarvey KeitelTim RothMichael MadsenWhen a simple jewelry heist goes horribly wrong, the surviving criminals begin to suspect that one of them is a police informant. My go-to Tarantino film if I was pushed to make a choice from his filmography, I love the dialogue, pace, setting and cinematographic choices within this film
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenOrlando BloomA meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.Of course every Lord of the Rings film deserves to be in this list but you've got to start somewhere, the king of the fantasy genre
- DirectorChristopher MorrisStarsWill AdamsdaleRiz AhmedAdeel AkhtarFour incompetent British terrorists set out to train for and commit an act of terror.Quoted as "funny" a total of fifteen times by fifteen different media outlets on the marketing poster for this film, I can most certainly agree
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJoseph Gordon-LevittElliot PageA thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster. One of the few films that heavily influenced me when I first started to get into cinema, I couldn't believe that such a film existed that had such a complex story merged with set pieces, actions and a score that could move me so much
- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsTom HardyCharlize TheronNicholas HoultIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max.I watched this in the cinema three times, THREE times, like I actually paid over twenty pounds to watch this three times, this is one of the most bonkers action films ever made and pays brilliant tribute to grindhouse whilst also being brilliantly technical (kudos for the framerate being switched) It also respects itself, something most films don't ever do today
- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsBarry G. BernsonHerb CaillouetBill CampSteven, a charismatic surgeon, is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart, when the behavior of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing turns sinister.Barry Keoghan. Long hospital walls. Gallows humor. A shot child.
- DirectorBenny SafdieJosh SafdieStarsRobert PattinsonBenny SafdieJennifer Jason LeighAfter a botched bank robbery lands his younger brother in prison, Connie Nikas embarks on a twisted odyssey through New York City's underworld to get his brother Nick out of jail.A genius pairing of the Sadie brothers with Robert Pattinson, a clear cut chase of a film that explores power dynamics and regret against a ticking time bomb of a grimy backdrop of a film
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsJennifer LawrenceJavier BardemEd HarrisA couple's relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. The most “Christian” film I’ve seen - perfect allegory for God’s grace to mankind, even if Darren Aronofsky would disagree with me.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsNaomi WattsLaura HarringJustin TherouxAfter a car wreck on Mulholland Drive renders a woman amnesiac, she and a Hollywood-hopeful search for clues and answers across Los Angeles in a twisting venture beyond dreams and reality.
- DirectorTerrence MalickStarsChristian BaleCate BlanchettNatalie PortmanA writer indulging in all that Los Angeles and Las Vegas have to offer, undertakes a search for love and self via a series of adventures with six different women.
- DirectorTerrence MalickStarsRyan GoslingRooney MaraMichael FassbenderTwo intersecting love triangles. Obsession and betrayal set against the music scene in Austin, Texas.A great companion piece to the Malick spiritual trilogy
- DirectorPedro AlmodóvarStarsAntonio BanderasAsier EtxeandiaLeonardo SbaragliaA film director reflects on the choices he's made in life as the past and present come crashing down around him.Gloriously painfully nostalgic with fleeting troubles and beauty, mind-blown, clearly the best film I’ve seen in months (April 2022)
- DirectorDaniel KwanDaniel ScheinertStarsPaul DanoDaniel RadcliffeMary Elizabeth WinsteadA hopeless man stranded on a deserted island befriends a dead body, and together they go on a surreal journey to get home.An incredible feat of filmmaking from the Daniels, an impeccable feat of Paul Dano’s career, innovative acting by Daniel Radcliffe, this manages to sustain it’s beyond absurd premise through going the whole way. Makes ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ make more sense
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpyVernon DobtcheffNine years after Jesse and Celine first met, they encounter each other again on the French leg of Jesse's book tour. This has floored me. Avant-garde in its (realistic) portrayal of how love doesn’t always logistically work out the way we think
- DirectorKevin SmithStarsBrian O'HalloranJeff AndersonMarilyn GhigliottiA day in the lives of two convenience clerks named Dante and Randal as they annoy customers, discuss movies, and play hockey on the store roof. What sets this film above the classics, the modern epics, and many other films I’ve seen is how Kevin Smith depicts black and white, 90 minutes of shit-talking
- DirectorKornél MundruczóStarsVanessa KirbyShia LaBeoufEllen BurstynWhen a young mother's home birth ends in unfathomable tragedy, she begins a year-long odyssey of mourning that fractures relationships with loved ones in this deeply personal story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss.A brute tour-de-force through trauma, forgiveness, and new life
- DirectorGaspar NoéStarsPhilippe NahonBlandine LenoirFrankie PainA horse butcher's life and mind begin to break down as he lashes out against various factions of society while attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughter.Wow, what a brutal film. That Gaspar Noe could make a film better than ‘Escape the Void’ is a testament to his ability to portray nihilism and the bleakness of life. The reason why this, and not the former, film is in this list is how he is so easily able to portray the despair and depressive state of the main character, the philosophy of “everything is bleak but f**k the world” attitude that gives license to shocking scenes of behavior
- CreatorMark FrostDavid LynchStarsKyle MacLachlanSheryl LeeMichael HorsePicks up 25 years after the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town are stunned when their homecoming queen is murdered.
- DirectorPaul SchraderStarsEthan HawkeAmanda SeyfriedCedric The EntertainerA minister of a small congregation in upstate New York grapples with mounting despair brought on by tragedy, worldly concerns and a tormented past.
- DirectorHong Sang-sooStarsJeong Jae-yeongKim Min-heeYoun Yuh-jungA married film director falls for a young painter - twice.Absolute masterpiece. Never seen natural, free flowing dialogue done quite as well as this. Any critique of fleeting themes is crushed by the reality of how this depicts a short fling
- DirectorLuca GuadagninoStarsChloë Grace MoretzTilda SwintonDoris HickA darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.Bold and brash or belongs in the trash? Bold visceral movie from a great director!
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJonah HillMargot RobbieBased on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government.Ten years since I’ve seen this, and it still goes wild. So over the top that it works
- DirectorJean-Luc GodardStarsHéloïse GodetKamel AbdelliRichard ChevallierA silent, surreal parallel between a couple and a dog.Of course my fave Goddard film would be the divisive one!
- DirectorAng LeeStarsJake GyllenhaalHeath LedgerMichelle WilliamsEnnis and Jack are two shepherds who develop a sexual and emotional relationship. Their relationship becomes complicated when both of them get married to their respective girlfriends.I’m not gay myself, yet this is one of the most complicated, incisive and honest portrayals of gay love on screen that really makes me think and consider the experiences of many others
