Films that rock me
Every once in a while, I will see a movie that just captivates me. These aren't necessarily the ones that are my favorites, but they are ones that I can't stop thinking about after seeing.

- DirectorJames GunnStarsRainn WilsonElliot PageLiv TylerAfter his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, but lacking in heroic skills.I know pain, heartache and how crazy a guy can become when he is at the lowest point of his life. As someone who lost the love of his life to said love's own shortcomings while taking the appearance of the fool, the loss of Sarah to drugs and Jacques in this story agonizes me.
I love the movie, though! - DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsAaron Taylor-JohnsonNicolas CageChloë Grace MoretzDave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a superhero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so.The scene in which Hit-Girl and Frank D'Amico fight gets to me. I couldn't stop thinking about an adult thug beating up a small child after watching this.
- DirectorJason Spingarn-KoffStarsTeasa CopprueThis feature-length documentary follows a group of people whose lives are dramatically transformed by a virtual world -- reshaping relationships, identities, and ultimately the very notion of reality. This documentary is very raw. The story of the couple who destroyed their own families while chasing their fantasy disturbs me.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsEric BanaDaniel CraigMarie-Josée CrozeAfter the Black September capture and massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics, five men are chosen to eliminate the people responsible for that fateful day. There are many cases of horrific, memorable imagery in this film. However, the one in which the agents shoot a partially nude assassin, only for her to keep standing, walks past them then breathe out blood is one straight out of a nightmare.
- DirectorRichard MarquandStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter rescuing Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, the Rebel Alliance attempt to destroy the second Death Star, while Luke struggles to help Darth Vader back from the dark side. The scene where Palpatine is electrocuting Luke while Vader stands by, watching? Growing up, that scene scared me half to death! Every time I watched it, I would worry that Luke wouldn't make it out, despite me having seen it already. As childish as it sounds, I sometimes want to meet Mark Hamill so I can tell him, "I am so sorry for the way Palpatine treated you. No Jedi should endure that".
- DirectorRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillyJack McBrayerJane LynchA video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives. The scene in which Wreck-It Ralph destroys Vanellope von Schweetz's car is so heart-wrenching and disturbing. Having the hero destroy his only friend's life while she has to watch and cry while hanging on a tree... that's just something else.
"You really are a bad guy." - DirectorRoland EmmerichStarsMatthew BroderickJean RenoMaria PitilloFrench nuclear tests irradiate an iguana into a giant monster that heads off to New York City. The American military must chase the monster across the city to stop it before it reproduces. As a child, it devastated me when Godzilla died. I couldn't stop thinking of his/her death. I was practically thinking of it for weeks on end. It doesn't do what it once did, as the movie is silly and I've grown up, but there was a time. Oh yes, there was a time...
- DirectorNeill BlomkampStarsSharlto CopleyDev PatelHugh JackmanIn the near future, crime is patrolled by a mechanized police force. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. While Chappie represents a sophomoric and fantastical depiction of the transfer of consciousness, the intrigue sparked by said concept was tremendous when I first saw it in the theater. Specifically, it's the unsolved mystery of whether or not consciousness is something tied to the soul, or if it's a series of numbers in a readable program.
- DirectorLenny AbrahamsonStarsBrie LarsonJacob TremblaySean BridgersA little boy is held captive in a room with his mother since his birth, so he has never known the world outside. There is plenty of gripping provocations of the senses that rattled me. The bed creaking from Old Nick raping Ma was disturbing and was ingrained into my consciousness. The scenes where Old Nick overpowers Ma and muffles her into the pillow also got to me. I suppose my sensitivity towards the subject really provokes me.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsAmy AdamsJeremy RennerForest WhitakerA linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world.Though it is very solid in the science fiction realm, what drives it home is its dramatic elements. The rhetorical question of whether or not one would have a child if they knew their life would be cut short becomes a very literal and profound one. Simply thinking of that content from the film makes my eyes well up.
- DirectorAri AsterStarsToni ColletteMilly ShapiroGabriel ByrneA grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences.Hereditary got under my skin at every turn. It represented a complete 180 of horror, with the slow burn making it agonizingly intense, in lieu of jump scares. Additionally, the final scene - the perspective switching to the villains' victorious point-of-view - was completely out of left field, with an unexpected change of pace. You know a film has weight when I repeatedly research its villain, King Paimon, after I watch it.
