- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHarrison FordRyan GoslingAna de ArmasYoung Blade Runner K's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years. The film experience of the year so far that improves upon everything that came before it. Better characters, better story, and an overall more thought-provoking and satisfying film than its predecessor.
One of those rare sequels that can simultaneously honor what came before it and bravely forge a new path ahead.
9/10 - DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsVicky KriepsDaniel Day-LewisLesley ManvilleSet in 1950s London, Reynolds Woodcock is a renowned dressmaker whose fastidious life is disrupted by a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, who becomes his muse and lover.9/10
- DirectorGreta GerwigStarsSaoirse RonanLaurie MetcalfTracy LettsIn 2002, an artistically inclined 17-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California.8.5/10
- DirectorKevin NashStarsKristy BruceShane BruceMark KatzAsk no questions, hear no lies.An emotionally powerful slow burn with dynamite performances and a tremendous story about communication and deception regarding a broken family. I had the pleasure of seeing the film at the Lone Star Film Festival. Director Kevin Nash has made a film that I can't stop thinking about and really blew me away. This is bold filmmaking that's painful for all of the right reasons. With pitch-perfect characters and layered visual storytelling, this is a must watch picture.
8.5/10 - DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanPatrick StewartDafne KeenIn a future where mutants are nearly extinct, an elderly and weary Logan leads a quiet life. But when Laura, a mutant child pursued by scientists, comes to him for help, he must get her to safety. This ends Wolverine's story with class and dignity. A stark contrast from the more pulpy pictures in X-Men saga (even the good ones) with an R rating that includes more some occasionally gratuitous F bombs, insane (but appropriate) violence and some fine performances from Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and newcomer Dafnee Keen.
The drama is palpable, the stakes are high at all times and Logan's journey is appropriate and transformative for a character who we thought we had known pretty well over the last 20 years.
Kudos to Jim Mangold for going for the jugular with Jackman's swansong. There are some story issues (the Iphone sequence is absurd and X-24 is a little to pulpy for the tone of this story to me), but man this was a heck of a film and a great way for the first cinematic Wolverine to go out.
8.5/10 - DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaAllison WilliamsBradley WhitfordA young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.Jordan Peele's debut is socially relevant, has fantastic satire and great characters. While it does get a little long in the tooth and sometimes doesn't balance its comedy and drama as well as it could (the TSA sequences especially come to mind), it's a hell of a first feature and very, very good movie.
8.3/10 - DirectorSean BakerStarsBrooklynn PrinceBria VinaiteWillem DafoeSet over one summer, the film follows precocious six-year-old Moonee as she courts mischief and adventure with her ragtag playmates and bonds with her rebellious but caring mother, all while living in the shadows of Walt Disney World.8.3/10

- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsMeryl StreepTom HanksSarah PaulsonA cover-up spanning four U.S. Presidents pushes the country's first female newspaper publisher and her editor to join an unprecedented battle between press and government.
- DirectorTaylor SheridanStarsElizabeth OlsenJeremy RennerGraham GreeneA wildlife officer, who is haunted by a tragedy that happened because of him, teams up with an FBI agent in solving a murder of a young woman on a Wyoming Native American reservation and hopes to get redemption from his past regrets.8/10
- DirectorJames FrancoStarsJames FrancoDave FrancoAri GraynorWhen aspiring actor Greg Sestero meets the weird and mysterious Tommy Wiseau in an acting class, they form a unique friendship and travel to Hollywood to make their dreams come true.8/10
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsFionn WhiteheadBarry KeoghanMark RylanceAllied soldiers from Belgium, the British Commonwealth and Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.Nolan's latest is also the tightest film in terms of structure he's ever done. While it is very sound from a story perspective and nearly perfect technically, you never really get to know any of the characters or their plight.
Nolan's fastidiousness to historical accuracy and detail is first rate. This is a film that begs to be viewed on the biggest screen possible with the finest sound system. It's a technical marvel.
Almost all the characters on land are interchangeable and it decreases my interest in the movie. The situations are all very interesting, but the lack of any sort of investment in the main characters takes this down a notch for me. My critique is obviously highly subjective as it was never the point of the film to make you fall in love with any of the characters. This is a survival story pure and simple. You don't need to know backstory or go on some transformative character arc to really enjoy this film, those are just the kind of stories I enjoy.
The story on sea is actually my favorite part of the film and I kind of wish the whole picture would have been told from this perspective. It had the strongest characters and performances in the film.
Still, very good movie, just not enough emphasis on the characters to make me feel truly invested.
8.2/10 - DirectorAndrew FradeStarsHarrison CoeAnthony BotelhoApril LeeWash Up follows Mason O'Brien, short-lived National Hockey League player and reluctant minor leaguer, as he revisits his hometown and the colourful characters that populate it. While hiding the reason he is home during the hockey season, Mason is forced to figure out if it's finally time to hang up his skates.A fantastic independent film I saw at the Endless Mountains Film Festival. Wash Up is about a once highly touted hockey player who went to the NHL and could never live up to the hype. After being suspended, protagonist Mason returns home to figure out what he's going to do with his life in a very nice character piece that features some very good performances. I hope this one gets picked up for distribution. Technically very sound with believable characters and a great arc for the protagonist.
8/10 - DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandMichael KeatonRobert Downey Jr.Peter Parker balances his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens with his superhero alter-ego Spider-Man, and finds himself on the trail of a new menace prowling the skies of New York City.
- DirectorMcGStarsJudah LewisSamara WeavingRobbie AmellWhen Cole stays up past his bedtime, he discovers that his hot baby sitter belongs to a satanic cult that will stop at nothing to keep him quiet.I highly enjoyed this movie. It's trash, but it's enjoyable trash and knows exactly what it is. Great chemistry between the two leads with a lot of solid setups and payoffs. This is a fun turn your brain off and relax kind of movie.
There are some annoyances. The supporting cast is a bit weak and can be aggravating regarding how stereotypical these portrayals are. There are also some weird freeze frames with text over the characters ("What the *beep*?" comes up after a really shocking moment that takes you out of that moment because the film I guess feels like it's necessary to make a shocking moment more shocking by telling you, you should feel shocked which is incredibly unnecessary).
It's worth a watch and when it's humming, this is a really fun film.
7.8/10 - DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattZoe SaldanaDave BautistaThe Guardians struggle to keep together as a team while dealing with their personal family issues, notably Star-Lord's encounter with his father, the ambitious celestial being Ego.Not as good as the first film, but still highly enjoyable. Michael Rooker is the MVP, but the film is disjointed and feels stuck in neutral from a plot perspective and kind of blows up into CGI absurdity by the end of the film.
The film is also too funny for its own good as every character that makes a joke reacts with such effusive hilarity to their own jest that it diminishes the effect of the quip in the first place.
However, Kurt Russel is a welcome addition as Starlord's father and all of the characters are just as fun as the first time around.
I also appreciate that the film does focus on the characters as much as it does and doesn't give into the universe building *beep* that normally permeates through the MCU. It's the reason I will continue to see these films in theaters and refuse to see the other MCU films in theaters now.
