- DirectorIrvin KershnerStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter the Rebel Alliance are overpowered by the Empire, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett. This will always be in my top 10. I'm a Star Wars nerd, have been from a very young age - my parents took me to see the re-release in theaters in 1997 - and I've consumed the Star Wars universe in many different forms. Empire has always been the best Star Wars film, and I could be happy having this film on a desert island with me.
- DirectorStanley DonenGene KellyStarsGene KellyDonald O'ConnorDebbie ReynoldsA silent film star falls for a chorus girl just as he and his delusionally jealous screen partner are trying to make the difficult transition to talking pictures in 1920s Hollywood. It's so hard to pick a favorite musical!! I love musicals, I grew up with the soundtracks playing around the house. But Singin' just goes above and beyond with the beautifully choreographed dream numbers. If you're going to take musicals from stage to screen, this is the way to do it.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsJodie FosterMatthew McConaugheyTom SkerrittDr. Ellie Arroway, after years of searching, finds conclusive radio proof of extraterrestrial intelligence, sending plans for a mysterious machine. This is probably my favorite sci-fi movie of all time. I love the story, I love Ellie's perseverance against everyone's disapproval and disbelief, and I love the ending.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingEmma StoneRosemarie DeWittWhile navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.I saw this seven times in theaters. I just kept coming back, I had to. The music and the colors and the vivacity of it... every time I felt like crying and laughing and dancing all at once. It brought back the exhilarating feeling of doing live musical theatre for me, and that's a hard feeling to replicate.
- DirectorMichael CurtizStarsHumphrey BogartIngrid BergmanPaul HenreidA cynical expatriate American cafe owner struggles to decide whether or not to help his former lover and her fugitive husband escape the Nazis in French Morocco.Just the classic of classics for me - Ingrid Bergman is flawless, and it's eternally quotable.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpyAndrea EckertA young man and woman meet on a train in Europe, and wind up spending one evening together in Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together. There's several layers of romance in this movie for me - the romance of travel, of young love, of Europe, and the romance of connecting with someone in one night. I love how the story unfurls throughout the night, and the dialogue between the two characters.
- DirectorHoward HawksStarsKatharine HepburnCary GrantCharles RugglesWhile trying to secure a $1 million donation for his museum, a befuddled paleontologist is pursued by a flighty and often irritating heiress and her pet leopard, Baby.Totally the best screwball comedy (a close second for me is 'His Girl Friday') - love love love the play between Hepburn and Grant, Hepburn is pure delight in this film.
- DirectorGary TrousdaleKirk WiseStarsPaige O'HaraRobby BensonJesse CortiA prince cursed to spend his days as a hideous monster sets out to regain his humanity by earning a young woman's love.All-time favorite Disney movie, I wanted to be Belle as a kid, and this story has never lost its charm for me.
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsJohnny DeppWinona RyderDianne WiestThe solitary life of an artificial man - who was incompletely constructed and has scissors for hands - is upended when he is taken in by a suburban family.Sometimes Tim Burton goes a little too "Tim Burton" these days, but this is a perfect example of when his style works. It's such a sweet story, and I have memories of watching this with my mom when I was younger, and it just brings back good feelings upon every rewatch.
- DirectorMichel GondryStarsJim CarreyKate WinsletTom WilkinsonWhen their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever. This is one of the two movies I like Jim Carrey in (The Truman Show is the other), and I adore Kate Winslet in pretty much everything. And the story is fantastic - I really enjoy the feeling of the film every time I rewatch it. Part melancholy, part mystery, part hope - it's really mesmerizing. And the structure of the film itself is great, since things are told in pieces that slowly reconstruct throughout the film.
