- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMarlon BrandoAl PacinoJames CaanThe aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.Probably the most impeccable and best-structured film of all time. Timeless classic.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsDaveigh ChaseSuzanne PleshetteMiyu IrinoDuring her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts.Second or equal to The Godfather, one of the rarest movies that is an unparalleled masterpiece of storytelling and imagination that embodies the perfect rhythm.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsRobert De NiroJames WoodsElizabeth McGovernA former Prohibition-era Jewish gangster returns to the Lower East Side of Manhattan 35 years later, where he must once again confront the ghosts and regrets of his old life.Sergio Leone's last film as his longtime pet project, I refer to the recent extended cut that improves upon the original 3-hour long version.
Difficult to absorb the depth and breadth of this otherwise long movie in one sitting, but riveting and engrossing with Leone's cut-to-the-bone directing style.
Still have not wrapped my head around on this movie after my first viewing of the extended cut, merits analytical re-evaluation. - DirectorAng LeeStarsSuraj SharmaIrrfan KhanAdil HussainA young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger. The most recent movie on this list, but it's quite possibly one of the most mind-boggling and astonishingly well-directed movies of all time.
The less is said about this movie, the better, for the experience that awaits those who have not seen this movie in its proper aural-visual presentation. - DirectorFrank CapraStarsJames StewartDonna ReedLionel BarrymoreAn angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed.Actually a bleak and dark film with heavy themes, but a very moving movie about despair and hope & optimism.
Less is said about this movie, the better. Frank Capra's best film that supersedes even his multiple Oscar award-winning picture "It Happened One Night." - DirectorOrson WellesStarsOrson WellesJoseph CottenDorothy ComingoreFollowing the death of publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane, reporters scramble to uncover the meaning of his final utterance: 'Rosebud.'While it may be "overrated" by those who might be let down by the hype, it is important to see this movie blind for the first time in a long time or the very first time as a mature adult with an adjusted attitude to be attentive, for the rewarding experience.
One of the most amazing movies ever made, for those lucky enough to have seen this movie with virgin eyes the first time.
Superlatively magical in all areas, made by the then 25-year old boy genius auteur. - DirectorTerrence MalickStarsRichard GereBrooke AdamsSam ShepardA hot-tempered farm laborer convinces the woman he loves to marry their rich but dying boss so that they can have a claim to his fortune.Director Terrence Malick's second feature film and his only warranted masterpiece, and at a mercifully concise length that took two long years to finish editing before release.
One of the most beautiful and visually stunning movies ever shot and released. A moving story about the loss of innocence for all principal characters amid the beautifully eerie nature scenery. - DirectorHugh HudsonStarsBen CrossIan CharlesonNicholas FarrellTwo British track athletes, one a determined Jew and the other a devout Christian, are driven to win in the 1924 Olympics as they wrestle with issues of pride and conscience. One of the best "non-violent/lurid" drama movies made to date. It's about the indomitable spirit of self-determination against the odds, including self-doubt and religious/creed convictions. Guaranteed to move to tears by the time it ends.
The team beach running scene during the opening and closing credits with music set by the Greek composer and electronic musician Vangelis is forever indelible. - DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKeir DulleaGary LockwoodWilliam SylvesterAfter uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.Stanley Kubrick's sole perfection, that proves cinema is an art form that is also stimulating with steady entertainment that defies the convention.
This film is an experience unto itself. - DirectorDavid LeanStarsPeter O'TooleAlec GuinnessAnthony QuinnThe story of T.E. Lawrence, the English officer who successfully united and led the diverse, often warring, Arab tribes during World War I in order to fight the Turks.Ties even with "Patton," since I cannot choose either one to exclude the other. Both are perfect epic biographical films at the height of the now-bygone epic-style filmmaking.
While the title actor for the David Lean film gives a fine performance, it is the late actor George C. Scott for the WWII-era film that is superb as one of the best male performances ever delivered on celluloid.
Both films are fine in all areas, including directing, cinematography, structure, script, and production values.
There will never be great epic movies like these two to be duplicated in the present again, because Hollywood is risk-adverse with focus on PG-13 rated retread or action movies with vulgarity, violence and sensationalism.
