Horror
Some may have psychological elements, but these are generally intended to scare or unsettle the audience. Post-apocalyptic titles will go in "Horror", given that they're technically in that genre. The over-saturation of the market with apocalyptic scenarios has diminished the horror aspect for me, but they're still applicable films belong in this list. - DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsMia FarrowJohn CassavetesRuth GordonA young couple trying for a baby moves into an aging, ornate apartment building on Central Park West, where they find themselves surrounded by peculiar neighbors.Fantastic performance from Mia Farrow and a great atmospheric film. The subtle tension and psychological abuse themes were handled tastefully and ultimately underscored a slow but riveting watch.
Watched October 19th, 2019 - DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.Really great special effects, an intriguing plotline that keeps the viewer guessing and generally good acting (Kurt Russell was ironically one of the worst in my opinion). The motivations of the research team for being in Antarctica and discovering the mystery of it seemed a bit odd given the lack of explanation and amount of substances consumed early in the film. Very fun and tense watch though.
Watched July 9, 2021 with family - DirectorStephen ChiodoStarsGrant CramerSuzanne SnyderJohn Allen NelsonAliens who look like clowns come from outer space and terrorize a small town. This beautifully committed to its concept and genuinely wowed me. The special effects were stellar given the time period, and I appreciate that the movie took itself seriously while also not shying away from its B-movie campiness at times. Horrible acting (but I think it was intentional) that is saved by the fantastic soundtrack
Watched April 4th, 2020 - DirectorMichael DoughertyStarsAnna PaquinBrian CoxDylan BakerFive interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: an everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband; and a mean old man meets his match with a demonic, supernatural trick-or-treater.This literally blew me away. I had expected a low-budget indie film and was left with a film that beautifully committed itself to the concept. Time flew by and I was genuinely bummed out when the ending credits played. The anthology/flashback structure was great and I appreciated that most of the plot threads tied back together at one point or another. Great twists and soundtrack as well, while still maintaining a level of campiness
Watched June 7th, 2020 with family - DirectorRobin HardyStarsEdward WoodwardChristopher LeeDiane CilentoA puritan police sergeant arrives in a Scottish island village in search of a missing girl, who the pagan locals claim never existed.Essentially a superior version of Midsommar in my opinion (namely because of the secluded cult themes). The slow degradation of the inspector's psyche and his constant battles with his own religion were great, and I liked the ending a lot. It was fun seeing Christopher Lee as something other than Saruman as well
Watched April 5th, 2020 - DirectorEdgar G. UlmerStarsBoris KarloffBela LugosiDavid MannersAmerican honeymooners in Hungary become trapped in the home of a Satan-worshipping priest when the bride is taken there for medical help following a road accident.I enjoyed this much more than I expected going in. Great performances from Lugosi and Karloff and a compelling and well-developed rivalry despite this short runtime. The amount of dark subject matter in this is wild considering the time period (war crimes and their erasure, quasi-cuckoldry and grooming, skinning alive, etc.), and you can very much tell it is one of the last films released prior to the Hays code going into effect. The protagonists are background actors in the larger story being told, but it works mostly well. Good classical score and some nice cinematography (particularly in the ceremony scenes).
Watched October 30, 2023 - DirectorRobert EggersStarsRobert PattinsonWillem DafoeValeriia KaramanTwo lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.Great performances from Pattinson and Dafoe, but extremely dense and symbolic imagery that both confused and intrigued me as a viewer. The soundscape was disorienting and the cinematography was great. That being said, the incoherencies in the plot (though obviously intentional) nonetheless left me wanting a bit more clarity. I'm very conflicted on how I feel about the film as a whole
Watched in theaters October 27th, 2019 with friends - DirectorJames WhaleStarsBoris KarloffElsa LanchesterColin CliveMary Shelley reveals the main characters of her novel survived: Baron Henry Frankenstein, goaded by an even madder scientist, builds his monster a mate. This included my favorite portions from the book and an interesting addition in the character of Dr. Pretorius. The homosexual subtext suggested in the Wikipedia page is an interesting take that I had not considered. I enjoyed the inclusion of Mary Shelley, and I think the conclusion was tastefully done (if a bit rushed) and showed the lack of peace possible for the Monster in this society.
Watched December 18, 2020 - DirectorZach CreggerStarsGeorgina CampbellBill SkarsgårdJustin LongA woman staying at an Airbnb discovers that the house she has rented is not what it seems.I thought the first half of this was excellent and did a perfect job at exploring uneasiness and the differences in perception and experience for men and women in a modern world about perceived danger. The cinematography was great and creepy, and I found this genuinely scary up until the reveal. The second half of the film uses a comedic relief character to great effect with the new knowledge from the first act. I thought the comparison between the two rapists was interesting as well, and I am grateful they did not show anything graphic. That being said, some of the final moments in the film were notably weaker for me (the car ramming and water tower scenes mainly), but I still liked the ending.
Watched May 1, 2023 with my sister - DirectorRobert EggersStarsAnya Taylor-JoyRalph InesonKate DickieA family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession. While this was a slow film, the archaic dialogue and religious themes intrigued me. It was surprisingly gripping throughout and the acting was impressive. I watched it mostly for context of Eggers' work when I watch The Lighthouse later this year, but it was a really nice watch. "Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?" is a great line
Watched May 30th, 2019 - DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsBruce WillisHaley Joel OsmentToni ColletteMalcolm Crowe, a child psychologist, starts treating a young boy, Cole, who encounters dead people and convinces him to help them. In turn, Cole helps Malcolm reconcile with his estranged wife.I liked this more than I expected to; I can see why it became such a hit and continues to be referenced in pop culture to this day. Solid cast, soundtrack and plot.
Watched January 27th, 2018 - DirectorWes CravenStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid ArquetteA year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a masked killer who targets her and her friends by using scary movies as part of a deadly game.Despite having seen this parodied so many times, the original film actually holds up fairly well. The opening scene is iconic and probably my favorite part of the movie, but the blend between slasher horror and satire was refreshing. The ending was a bit lackluster for me but I otherwise enjoyed it

Rewatched 10/14/23 and liked it even more (7 to an 8). Very fun even knowing the twists, smart script, and I found the ending more intimidating this time around. - DirectorBernard RoseStarsVirginia MadsenXander BerkeleyTony ToddThe Candyman, a murderous soul with a hook for a hand, is accidentally summoned to reality by a skeptic grad student researching the monster's myth.Though this was a fairly rote slasher film heavily influenced by the Bloody Mary tale, it was entertaining and had interesting plot points related to racism, both past and current, and the power of belief in the supernatural (and how this can be reflected as an apparent psychotic break). Solid performances from Madsen and Todd and nice motifs.
Watched October 22nd, 2019 - DirectorWes CravenStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid ArquetteTen years have passed, and Sidney Prescott, who has put herself back together thanks in part to her writing, is visited by the Ghostface Killer.Smart script, good performances from the main trio and supporting cast, a tastefully handled timeskip and brutal murders with an interesting killer reveal and motive. This is probably my first or second favorite in the franchise for its sharp meta commentary about remakes and social media. I will certainly be doing a Scream-a-thon when the 7th comes out in honor of this movie
Watched July 28, 2023 - DirectorDaniel MyrickEduardo SánchezStarsHeather DonahueMichael C. WilliamsJoshua LeonardThree film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.I had dreaded watching this as it was one of the first horror film synopses I remember reading in my "too scared to watch horror" phase. It ended up being sufficiently creepy without making me sick to my stomach, and had some great and believable acting from everyone involved. There were some points where I was frustrated with the group's frustration, but I suppose that was the point. I think the ambiguity of the supernatural elements around the group was done well, though ultimately would have preferred something conclusive indicating whether or not the forest was actually changing around them. Overall a solid watch and really good found footage exploration.
Watched October 12, 2023 with family - DirectorTobe HooperStarsMarilyn BurnsEdwin NealAllen DanzigerFive friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw.Very inventive and a tense, harrowing watch. The gritty and "natural" feeling of the film was enhanced by the low-budget and oppressive daylight scenes. Renovated the slasher genre and inspired the faux "based on true events".
Watched November 1st, 2019 - DirectorJames WhaleStarsColin CliveMae ClarkeBoris KarloffDr Henry Frankenstein is obsessed with assembling a living being from parts of several exhumed corpses.I enjoyed some of the shots in this, primarily the stark contrast between light and dark and the scene where the Monster rises from behind the rock to attack Henry. In any case, I thought it was much inferior to the book but can appreciate it for its significance
Watched December 2, 2020 - DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsSissy SpacekPiper LaurieAmy IrvingCarrie White, a shy, friendless teenage girl who is sheltered by her domineering, religious mother, unleashes her telekinetic powers after being humiliated by her classmates at her senior prom.A beautifully executed prom scene with a heartbreaking resolution. The opening scene is pretty harrowing as well for its dark realism. There were a few too many slow-motion shots for me but I otherwise enjoyed it. Much better than I anticipated
Watched June 6th, 2019 - DirectorWes CravenStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid ArquetteTwo years after the first series of murders, as Sidney acclimates to college life, someone donning the Ghostface costume begins a new string of killings. This was a nice watch with notably less satire than the first film, but the whodunnit mystery was entertaining and I enjoyed everyone's performances here. I felt like some of the plot and meta-commentary about sequels served as a decent parallel to the first film, but it also felt like the actual scares retread very similar ground. I'm more positive than not overall
Watched July 11, 2023 with family - DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDuane JonesJudith O'DeaKarl HardmanA ragtag group of Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a horde of flesh-eating ghouls that are ravaging the Northeast of the United States.Depressingly bleak and horrifying in its simplicity, this revolutionized horror and created a new zombie canon for American cinema. The cinematography, soundtrack and credits scenes were great. I think Duane Jones had by far the best performance, but Judith O'Dea played a shell-shocked Barbara well to an almost annoying degree. I liked the gradually unfolding explanation of the event through radio and TV clips, but felt that some of the ghouls' traits weren't explored to a satisfying degree. For nearly an hour of the film, even after we see the first ghoul somehow wield a brick to break a car window, none of the others even attempt to attack the house based off of one burning chair; I think their usage of tools in general seemed to be mostly a plot device for sudden danger. Otherwise, I enjoyed this and am glad I've finally finished watching it after my previous attempt in college.
Watched October 9, 2023 - DirectorMark MylodStarsRalph FiennesAnya Taylor-JoyNicholas HoultA young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. An interesting piece discussing the ways in which art can be distorted and dissected to a grotesque level beyond its original purpose of entertainment or edification. The idea of takers as any customer of a service establishment seemed a bit odd, but I think it was more of a commentary about class (rich people are the only ones able to afford the menu but ultimately have no power when it comes to what they're being served by the "givers"/working class, etc.)
Fun watch with some good black comedy throughout
Watched October 23, 2023 - DirectorJacques TourneurStarsSimone SimonTom ConwayKent SmithAn American man marries a Serbian immigrant who fears that she will turn into the cat person of her homeland's fables if they are intimate together.I knew nothing about this going in and was pleasantly surprised at the tense atmosphere and mostly ambiguous nature of the curse. I think some of the Christian/Eastern European allegories were a bit overused, but the performances were generally decent for a B-movie and offered some intriguing character portrayals. Solid overall
Watched October 7, 2023 - DirectorBenjamin ChristensenStarsBenjamin ChristensenElisabeth ChristensenMaren PedersenFictionalized documentary showing the evolution of witchcraft, from its pagan roots to its confusion with hysteria in Eastern Europe. This was surprisingly interesting and both explored medieval practices surrounding supposed witchcraft and also offered a possible scientific explanation that witchcraft may have just been hysteria caused by mass persecutions. There was a notable feminist tone to the film, sometimes decrying the cruel methods employed against accused witches, and other times encouraging the viewer to bask in the absurd depravity depicted and question how much of a witch's confessions were coerced. All in all, very pleased
Watched October 17, 2023 - DirectorWilliam FriedkinStarsEllen BurstynMax von SydowLinda BlairWhen a young girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests to save her life.I watched this in 2022 and remember being impressed with the special effects and genuinely tense scenes. The dark and oppressive atmosphere was felt throughout the film, and the acting was good.
Watched c. Fall 2022 with family - DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsJeff GoldblumGeena DavisJohn GetzA brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong. This had some fantastic special effects and a moving but tragic story. Geena Davis had a great performance, and Goldblum performed well given the bizarre premise of the plot. The first half of the movie slogged for me, but the second half made up for it. My major qualm with this was the completely unsympathetic Stathis, but the film was overall enjoyable by the end
Watched October 8, 2023 - DirectorJohn FawcettStarsEmily PerkinsKatharine IsabelleKris LemcheTwo death-obsessed sisters, outcasts in their suburban neighborhood, must deal with the tragic consequences when one of them is bitten by a deadly werewolf.Great performances and soundtrack, impeccable late 90s teenage angst. Lycanthropy as an allegory for puberty and delving into the confusing world of adolescent relationships for girls (with their peers, with romantic interests, and with their family). I think the third act was a bit long, especially since the mother is basically dropped from the plotline after having a fairly strong scene. This had a unique take on cures and banes for lycanthropy that I assume are explored further in the rest of the trilogy (which I will probably continue to). Overall quite enjoyed this.
Watched October 21, 2023 - DirectorDrew GoddardStarsKristen ConnollyChris HemsworthAnna HutchisonFive college friends head out to a remote cabin for a getaway, but things don't go as planned when they start getting killed. They soon discover that there is more to the cabin than it seems.Genuinely amusing satire with great callbacks to a variety of classic films. While I can understand why people might not enjoy it (especially as it essentially scorns modern horror fans for constantly seeking gore/"torture porn"), I liked this quite a bit.
Watched February 7th, 2020 - DirectorWes CravenStarsDavid ArquetteNeve CampbellCourteney CoxWhile Sidney and her friends visit the Hollywood set of Stab 3, the third film based on the Woodsboro murders, another Ghostface killer rises to terrorize them.I didn't realize this was originally billed as the ending to a trilogy, but I thought Randy's exposition was witty. The focus on Sidney's isolation and ultimate reintegration was good, but some of the plot resolution was a bit sloppy given it didn't really want to commit to acknowledging the sexual exploitation plotline. My sister pointed out some of this ending undermines previous moments in the franchise, but I still enjoyed this and found the dashes of straight comedy an interesting addition to the generally deadpan scripts.
Watched July 14, 2023 with family - DirectorWes CravenStarsHeather LangenkampRobert EnglundJf DavisA demonic force has chosen Freddy Krueger as its portal to the real world. Can Heather Langenkamp play the part of Nancy one last time and trap the evil trying to enter our world? This was a very fun watch with its meta commentary and stellar performances from Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, and John Saxon. Great soundtrack with bombastic jumpscares but a slightly more subdued Freddy design and kills. I felt the final fight ran slightly too long (especially the highway chase sequence and oven scene), but this might in fact be my favorite of the series. Both the slasher and dreamscape elements (number of kills, spectacle, etc.) are much more muted in this film compared to previous entries I've seen (1 and 3), so this almost feels like an entirely different series that somehow still necessitates some familiarity with the original to understand its script nuance.
Wathced October 22, 2023 - DirectorBob ClarkStarsOlivia HusseyKeir DulleaMargot KidderDuring their Christmas break, a group of sorority girls are stalked by a stranger.A proto-slasher with some interesting feminist undertones and a genuinely dreadful atmosphere. The graininess of the film and the phone calls enhanced the creepiness of the unhinged outbursts from the deranged killer. I found the ending extremely frustrating considering any good cop would have put Jess in a hospital after the trauma, but I suppose that's part of the point.
Watched December 27, 2023 as part of Fa-la-la-lathon 2023 - DirectorMatt Bettinelli-OlpinTyler GillettStarsMelissa BarreraDan StevensAlisha WeirAfter a group of criminals kidnap the ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, they retreat to an isolated mansion, unaware that they're locked inside with no normal little girl.Really fun. Humor mostly landed, most characters developed well (even if in heavy-handed, exposition monologues), and good performances from the cast (Melissa Barrera is way better in everything else I've seen her in aside from Scream 5). The quasi-romance/friendship scenes between Rickles and Joey and Peter and Sammy were really bizarre to me. Soundtrack and action scenes were well-choreographed. Overall really enjoyed this but can acknowledge it has flaws.
Watched April 21, 2024 in theaters with family - DirectorGeorges FranjuStarsPierre BrasseurAlida ValliJuliette MaynielA surgeon causes an accident which leaves his daughter disfigured and goes to extreme lengths to give her a new face.I enjoyed this for the most part because of its intriguing premise and the stellar practical effects. The ending felt extremely abrupt and the rest of the film didn't really explore Christiane's gradual disgust with the operations very deeply (in my opinion). The quasi-circus elements of the soundtrack seemed to be out of nowhere but I actually liked them as pieces of music.
Watched March 23, 2024 with family - DirectorMatt Bettinelli-OlpinTyler GillettStarsCourteney CoxMelissa BarreraJenna OrtegaIn the next installment, the survivors of the Ghostface killings leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter in New York City. This was more of a straight-up slasher and included notably less meta commentary and satire, but it was still entertaining and the kills were good. The subway scenes were my favorite part of the movie and amped up the tension extremely well. I thought the acting was SIGNIFICANTLY better in this one (especially from Barrera), but I was a bit underwhelmed with the ending despite some surprises.
Quick series ranking as of this writing: 1, 4, 2, 3, 6, 5
Watched August 1, 2023 - DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceJamie Lee CurtisTony MoranFifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.Great score and a pioneer in slasher tropes, this was a fun watch from a historical perspective but left me underwhelmed on the whole. Jamie Lee Curtis was good here, but I was underwhelmed with the rest of the cast. There were some interesting (albeit mostly unexplored) themes of punishment for sexual promiscuity. The cinematography was great for the most part, but some POV shots felt too long. Michael Myers was a creepy villain but not as frightening as I had anticipated. Overall, mixed but positive feelings overall
Watched October 7, 2023 with family - DirectorMatt Bettinelli-OlpinTyler GillettStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid Arquette25 years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, Calif., a new killer dons the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past. This brought back many franchise mainstays in both plot and execution, but the meta commentary was still generally good and the performances from the main group were good (I thought Arquette and Campbell in particular played the wise survivors well). Barrera had an absolutely atrocious performance and several shoehorned monologues, but I thought the plot was solid otherwise despite a quick resolution and saved by some genuinely emotional kills. I'll be interested to see how the franchise continues from here
Watched July 29, 2023 - DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaAllison WilliamsBradley WhitfordA young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.I think the hype for this movie kind of killed it for me, but it was still an enjoyable watch. The social commentary was refreshing, and the direction and acting was pretty great as well.
Watched June 3rd, 2017 - DirectorTerence FisherStarsPeter CushingChristopher LeeMichael GoughWhen Jonathan Harker rouses the ire of Count Dracula for accepting a job at the vampire's castle under false pretenses, his friend Dr. Van Helsing pursues the predatory villain. While I ended up enjoying this and found Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee as compelling rivals, this is VERY confusing in the lack of context provided until about halfway through the film, especially if you are expecting a straightforward adaptation of the novel as I was. This changes character relationships, their roles in the story, vampirism cures and treatments, etc. That being said, the seductive nature of Dracula in this was interesting and made him all the more mysterious when he did appear. Arthur's character was very odd in this and seemed uneven plotwise. The special effects and score were solid. I think this is a fun watch if you can get through the confusing plot
Watched October 27, 2023 with family - DirectorWerner HerzogStarsKlaus KinskiIsabelle AdjaniBruno GanzCount Dracula moves from Transylvania to Wismar, spreading the Black Plague across the land. Only a woman pure of heart can bring an end to his reign of horror. While I enjoyed sections of this, I wanted to like it more than I did. Much of the film is slow, meditative sequences filming travel, but many shots had beautiful cinematography to at least offer a pleasing visual element. Klaus Kinski had a fantastic portrayal of Dracula in his melancholic interpretation of the character, and I appreciated Lucy's expanded plot in this film compared to the novel. I had very high expectations for this but ultimately felt its reinvention of the story could have used more explanation or analysis of Dracula from Lucy's perspective.
Watched October 25, 2023 - DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsJessica ChastainJames McAvoyBill HaderTwenty-seven years after their first encounter with the terrifying Pennywise, the Losers Club have grown up and moved away, until a devastating phone call brings them back.I liked the character moments in this (individualized scares, etc.), but the increased number of jumpscares and tonally dissonant blend of comedy and horror (even if otherwise serious moments, it became a comedy (Bowers in the shower, leper spew, etc.), but at other times fully ramped up the melodrama and expected the viewer to take it seriously (namely near the end). Overall enjoyable but not sure if it's entirely necessary viewing
Watched September 15th, 2019 in theaters with friends - DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsBill SkarsgårdJaeden MartellFinn WolfhardIn the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town. This was massively overhyped but there were a few good moments (the jump scare after Beverly's confrontation, the rock war, etc.) I was extremely underwhelmed with the fairly cliche script (namely Bill's final monologue against It). I think the sequel will likely be more interesting for me.
Watched September 12th, 2019 with family - DirectorChuck RussellStarsHeather LangenkampRobert EnglundCraig WassonA psychiatrist familiar with knife-wielding dream demon Freddy Krueger helps teens at a mental hospital battle the killer who is invading their dreams.I had heard this was a contender for best in the franchise, and I was not disappointed in returning to the series. This has a much more focus on fun, while still including some stellar and frightening dream sequences. I thought the acting was SIGNIFICANTLY better than the first from all involved. The plot was probably the weakest part of the film (likely due to multiple rewrites apparently), but I was pretty underwhelmed with many of the special effects as well. Granted, I'm saying this with a modern lens so take that with a grain of salt. Anyway, pleasantly surprised and will continue to New Nightmare for the full Heather Langenkamp saga.
Watched October 15, 2023 - DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsWill SmithAlice BragaCharlie TahanYears after a plague kills most of humanity and transforms the rest into monsters, the sole survivor in New York City struggles valiantly to find a cure. This stuck with me for a long time; I only saw it once and I still remember a lot about it. Very cool take on a post-apocalyptic world, and the acting was solid from what I remember
- DirectorLeigh WhannellStarsElisabeth MossOliver Jackson-CohenHarriet DyerWhen Cecilia's abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her his fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see. This was definitely more entertaining than I had anticipated, and I thought the acting and plot twists were good for the most part. Some of the middle portion of the film felt dragged out due to the incomprehensible actions of the sister and the cop, but it was still fun throughout with a satisfying conclusion.
Watched January 2021, with family - DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future."Here's Johnny!" I mostly remember this for establishing several common horror tropes, but it was a bit dense of a watch for younger me. Probably deserves a rewatch
Written 4/8/19 - DirectorDavid SladeStarsJosh HartnettMelissa GeorgeDanny HustonAfter an Alaskan town is plunged into darkness for a month, it is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires.I remember this for its frightening depicition of vampires and the overall plot, but I don't remember much beyond that. Overall solid
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDavid EmgeKen ForeeScott H. ReinigerDuring an escalating zombie epidemic, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his TV executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall. This was an interesting sequel that was noticeably less bleak and even had comedic moments to show the mundane nature of consumerist society. I think we accidentally watched the extended DVD cut for this, so some of the slice of life stuff seemed to REALLY drag compared to the flashy opening and ending sequences. Annoying characters other than Peter. Good score. All in all, decent watch but I prefer Night over this one
Watched October 29, 2023 with family - DirectorEli RothStarsPatrick DempseyTy OlssonGina GershonAfter a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts - the birthplace of the infamous holiday.A fun slasher with a painfully bland script (though I did appreciate the Thanksgiving-specific lines incorporated several times throughout). The gore was generally over-the-top and amusing, but some scenes were brutal. I think the cast did a fine job and I liked the whodunnit aspect, and the I Know What You Did Last Summer-esque ending was amusing. I'll watch the sequel, hopefully at an appropriate time of year
Watched January 28, 2023 - DirectorWes CravenStarsBrandon Quintin AdamsEverett McGillWendy RobieTwo adults and a juvenile break into a house occupied by a brother and sister and their stolen children. There, they must fight for their lives. This was an interesting watch with solid performances from all involved. The social commentary was scathing and in-your-face (the rich landlords are only defeated when the gentrified or oppressed basement children join together, etc.), but I think it worked for the most part. This did feel a bit long during some of the chase sequences around the house, but I still mostly enjoyed it.
Watched October 21, 2023 - DirectorRobert WiseStarsJulie HarrisClaire BloomRichard JohnsonHill House has stood for about 90 years and appears haunted: its inhabitants have always met strange, tragic ends. Now Dr. John Markway has assembled a team of people who he thinks will prove whether or not the house is haunted.I enjoyed this for the stellar cinematography and direction but was a bit underwhelmed with the abundant narration and actual plot. The subtle lesbian commentary with Theo's character was cool to see, and I think everyone acted well. Keeping the scares mostly offscreen was a smart decision, as I don't think the actual effects were particularly frightening (the bending door and collapsing staircase, in particular; the creepy voices emanating from the wall were genuinely scary though). All in all, mixed but mostly positive feelings.
Watched November 8, 2023 - DirectorNia DaCostaStarsYahya Abdul-Mateen IITeyonah ParrisNathan Stewart-JarrettA sequel to the horror film Candyman (1992) that returns to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began. While this served as a solid sequel and I appreciated the expansion of the Candyman mythos, the ending sequence was altogether confusing and quite abrupt. The social commentary and unease of the first film were still here, but I was left wanting more.
Watched August 29, 2021 in theaters with friends - DirectorAndré ØvredalStarsCorey HawkinsAisling FranciosiLiam CunninghamA crew sailing from Varna (Bulgaria) by the Black Sea to England find that they are carrying very dangerous cargo.I was pumped for this after its stellar trailer but left with mixed but mostly positive feelings. The soundtrack and acting were good, but Dracula (whose design was admittedly pretty good) was shown way too often. The CGI overall was only okay, so I think this would have been better with more practical effects. The script was a bit muddied and tried to flesh out its cast, but generally had little payoff and served only to break between the more watchable scenes of suspense. The ending was actually cool but I really don't think this will get a sequel despite its cliffhanger. I like Dracula and movies on the sea so I still enjoyed this, but it definitely could have been stronger by having more restraint in revealing the threat
Watched August 10, 2023 in theaters - DirectorCameron CairnesColin CairnesStarsDavid DastmalchianLaura GordonIan BlissA live television broadcast in 1977 goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation's living rooms. Some interesting commentary about the lengths one would go for fame and good performances. The special effects were visibly low-budget but generally good (the worm scene in particular). The fever dream sequence at the end made this markedly worse for me considering the original premise was a documentary of unseen footage (how would the viewer see Delroy's hallucinations?), but overall a decent watch. Gus is a #robbedgoddess
Watched April 26, 2024 with family - DirectorTobe HooperStarsJoBeth WilliamsHeather O'RourkeCraig T. NelsonA family's home is haunted by a host of demonic ghosts. The special effects were amazing for the time period, and there were definitely some iconic quotes throughout. Glad I watched it but won't necessarily be returning
Watched February 16th, 2019 - DirectorDarren Lynn BousmanAxelle CarolynAdam GieraschStarsAdrienne BarbeauHunter SmitCameron EastonTen stories are woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only to terrorize unsuspecting residents.A serviceable anthology with some bizarre laughs and all-around fun. Not as strong as Trick r' Treat but it was good to get in the Halloween mood. I liked the first, second, ninth and tenth segments the most
Watched October 2, 2021 with family - DirectorJohn KrasinskiStarsEmily BluntJohn KrasinskiMillicent SimmondsA family struggles for survival in a world where most humans have been killed by blind but noise-sensitive creatures. They are forced to communicate in sign language to keep the creatures at bay.I liked the originality of the premise, but was otherwise underwhelmed. Many questions were left unanswered, and while one could argue the point of the movie was to show the strength of a family versus describing this apocalyptic world, I was nonetheless disgruntled.
Watched September 1st, 2018 with family - DirectorAri AsterStarsToni ColletteMilly ShapiroGabriel ByrneA grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences.Despite the massive amount of praise this movie gets, I found it to essentially be a much less entertaining Rosemary's Baby. The family drama was intense and the acting was solid but I was underwhelmed by the supernatural elements and didn't find this as scary as it was purported to be. The stoner trio around 41 minutes in the movie have by far the most believable acting I have ever seen for random, non-recurring actors. I would honestly recommend the movie just for them

Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path.My thoughts are much the same as the first film. Great premise and I appreciated the flashback, but many of the story beats were rather tropey (man broken by apocalypse finds hope, safe haven gets overrun, etc.)

Some iconic scenes and Bale did a nice job but nothing else of note
I believe this was in the movie splurge of Winter Break 2014, but it could have been Summer 2015 as well
Written 4/8/19 - DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin. The special effects were REALLY good in this for being from the late '70s, but that is about where my praise ends. The concept is cool and the film had a few unexpected twists, but I found the decision-making of the characters to be so contrary to survival throughout the entire thing. Some decent performances from the actors but ultimately pretty disappointed
Watched October 23, 2021 with family - DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsRod TaylorTippi HedrenJessica TandyA wealthy San Francisco socialite pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people.I don't know about this one. There was some good cinematography (especially scenery shots of Bodega Bay), but I felt like some of its scenes were overacted even considering the sudden bursts of violence (though Cathy, Mitch's sister, did a great job). I can see how this was seminal in horror for making the antagonists unassailable and impossible to defeat, but I don't think I enjoyed watching this very much all things considered.
Watched October 28, 2023 - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsRoy ScheiderRobert ShawRichard DreyfussWhen a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community off Cape Cod, it's up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down.Considering this was revolutionary in horror and film in general, it was an enjoyable watch. The horror was much more slow-burn than I anticipated (and heavily influenced by Moby Dick), and I feel like the movie could have been shortened without losing any of its gravitas. Nonetheless, I appreciate the film
Watched February 16th, 2019 - DirectorElizabeth BanksStarsKeri RussellAlden EhrenreichO'Shea Jackson Jr.An oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converge on a Georgia forest where a huge black bear goes on a murderous rampage after unintentionally ingesting cocaine.A gory monster/slasher film with a surprising amount of heart and decent comedy. This was better than I expected but certainly not a great film. Decent performances from all involved given the absurd plot material
Watched June 25, 2023 with family - DirectorJim GillespieStarsJennifer Love HewittSarah Michelle GellarAnne HecheFour young friends bound by a tragic accident are reunited when they find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding maniac in their small seaside town.I basically only watched this since it was written by Kevin Williamson from Scream, but there was little special about this. This played as a mostly straightforward slasher with an unnecessarily convoluted whodunnit given little attention. It was nice to see a collection of 90s heartthrobs, but I was pretty underwhelmed aside from the score and scenery shots.
Watched October 3, 2023 with family - DirectorAri AsterStarsFlorence PughJack ReynorVilhelm BlomgrenA couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.Beautiful scenery and sufficiently unnerving cult antics, but the movie was much too long and excruciatingly slow.
Watched February 9th, 2020 - DirectorDanny CannonStarsJennifer Love HewittFreddie Prinze Jr.Brandy NorwoodThe murderous fisherman with a hook is back to once again stalk the two surviving teens, Julie and Ray, who had left him for dead, as well as cause even more murder and mayhem, this time at a posh island resort.A surprisingly fun sequel with much more of a focus on spectacular kills (though nearly none of them were related to the original Ben Willis revenge plot). The soundtrack was good, and the more comedic script of the first half was decent. The latter half of the movie had some rather nonsensical twists (SPOILERS: the hotel is apparently where Ben Willis originally worked, but why did he have to lure and kill a bunch of innocent people on the island if his son was already in Julie's good graces?), but it was still entertaining. I liked the cast overall but I don't think anyone will be getting any Oscars.
Watched October 15, 2023 - DirectorScott DerricksonStarsMason ThamesMadeleine McGrawEthan HawkeAfter being abducted and locked in a basement, a boy starts receiving calls on a disconnected phone from the killer's previous victims. This was much more of a coming-of-age film than I expected going in, and I didn't find any genuine scares aside from Ethan Hawke's stellar creepiness in both his tender and evil personalities. Madeleine McGraw was by far the standout part of this movie in the truly horrific abuse scene, so this was worth it for that alone.
Watched November 5, 2023 with family - DirectorTim BurtonStarsJohnny DeppChristina RicciMiranda RichardsonIchabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the decapitations of three people; the culprit is legendary apparition The Headless Horseman.Great aesthetics in costuming and cinematography, good score, but I felt the script was quite weak and I wasn't thrilled with anyone's performance outside of the town elders. This is a good Halloween watch for its autumnal, spooky nature but otherwise a miss for me unfortunately

They must band together to help each other escape the wild fates that have turned their lives upside down.Given this was a made for TV movie, I thought it was surprisingly decent. There were some clever jokes and good celebrity cameos. It would have been stronger if they had explained the rules of MASH at the beginning and provided a bit more information on why the curse existed, but I was overall satisfied for a B-movie comedic romp.

Watched October 8, 2021 in theaters with friends - DirectorNobuhiko ÔbayashiStarsKimiko IkegamiMiki JinboKumiko ÔbaA schoolgirl and six of her classmates travel to her aunt's country home, which turns out to be haunted. This was a bizarre experience that I'm not sure I enjoyed. The over-the-top surrealistic editing was probably the most interesting part of this, as the plot was otherwise a fairly standard haunted house trip. There is some interesting subtext of the traumas of past events (especially WWII in Japan and the atomic bombing) and being unable to move on despite that being shown as the idealistic outcome. Overall as a movie though, I think this would be hard to recommend or rewatch
Watched October 21, 2023 - DirectorAndrew FlemingStarsRobin TunneyFairuza BalkNeve CampbellA newcomer to a Catholic prep high school falls in with a trio of outcast teenage girls who practice witchcraft, and they all soon conjure up various spells and curses against those who anger them.I liked the aesthetics in this movie and always enjoy seeing Neve Campbell, but the denouement started taking itself so seriously that it notably contrasted with the teen flick tone of the first half. Though I liked everyone's performances, it definitely felt a bit cringe by the end. Great soundtrack though
Watched February 15th, 2020 - DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsNaomi WattsMartin HendersonBrian CoxA journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it.For being hailed as a "modern classic" of the horror genre, it was pretty underwhelming. The acting was generally atrocious, the plot zigzagged from high-tension action to out-of-place comedic or boring moments, and the upbeat synth soundtrack produced a schlocky effect for otherwise compelling scenes. The ending was even more nonsensical and soured my opinion further. I may watch the sequels for the original premise alone, but I am stunned that this saw so much success during its initial release.

Addendum, 10/15/23: I will say this at least had an original premise and some iconic cinematography and kills, so I'll bump this from a 3 to 4 despite my qualms with the actual script. - DirectorTobe HooperStarsElizabeth BerridgeShawn CarsonJeanne AustinFour teenagers visit a local carnival for a night of innocent amusement, but soon discover that nothing there is innocent or amusing. This is another movie where I liked the concept more than its execution. The opening sequence was quite long but established its carnival atmosphere well, and it was good at building dread after the first real scare. The set was used to its fullest throughout the second half of the movie for good scares, and the effects were generally solid. All this said, Richie instigated literally the entire situation for no reason, and also got them all in grave danger. Most annoying character I've seen in something recently haha
Watched October 19, 2023 - DirectorZelda WilliamsStarsKathryn NewtonLiza SoberanoJenna DavisA coming of RAGE love story about a teenager and her crush, who happens to be a corpse. After a set of horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a journey to find love, happiness - and a few missing body parts. This was fine, but I was waiting the entire movie for the plot to actually make sense. It tried to be a dark and snappy comedy with a gothic romance, but the script didn't seem to actually have any good one-liners to develop any believable relationships between the characters. Liza Soberano was really good in this and unknown to me before (Newton and Sprouse too to a lesser extent). Overall pretty disappointed unfortunately because the premise of this was strong.
Watched April 5, 2024 with family - DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellEllen SandweissRichard DeManincorFive friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.I finally forced myself to watch this and was ultimately underwhelmed. While the effects and demonic possession were frightening to an extent, this was so over-the-top that I had a hard time getting into the atmosphere (especially the incessant screaming from the demons). Ash felt very random as a protagonist considering the amount of time spent with other characters. The completely unnecessary tree rape scene was also present here (my only exposure to the franchise previously was the 2013 reboot). All in all, I don't see how 2 and 3 can lean into more comedic elements but maybe I'll get around to it. This is a skippable movie for me otherwise
Watched October 16, 2023 - DirectorSean S. CunninghamStarsBetsy PalmerAdrienne KingJeannine TaylorA group of teenage camp counselors attempt to re-open an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past, but they are stalked by a mysterious, relentless killer.I watched this to round out the trifecta of classic slasher franchises and found this to probably be my least favorite of the three. Boring or off-screen kills, few memorable characters, and an excruciatingly slow pace. The only praise I can give to this is for pioneering the practical joker archetype in slashers (one which I admittedly find annoying) and an actually unexpected twist, plus a decent soundtrack and some good scenery shots. But it was so boring that I can't recommend it and don't see myself coming back to the franchise at all.
Watched October 8, 2023 - DirectorMario BavaStarsTelly SavalasElke SommerSylva KoscinaA tourist spends the night in a derelict Spanish villa seemingly held in the supernatural grip of an eccentric butler, who resembles a depiction of the Devil she had seen on an old fresco.Outside of a charismatic performance from Telly Savalas and an absolutely fantastic soundtrack (seriously, insanely good for a film this obscure), I found this both slow and confusing without any real clarity provided (and a completely unnecessary rape scene tossed in almost as a throwaway moment). I watched an English dub, so perhaps that didn't help, but I basically only grasped the plot after reading the Wikipedia synopsis. I only watched this to satisfy a Mario Bava and devil film on Hooptober X over on Letterboxd, but I was decidedly not a fan.
Watched October 22, 2023 - DirectorFreddie FrancisStarsPeter CushingPatrick WymarkChristopher LeeA collector comes into possession of the skull of the Marquis de Sade and learns it is possessed by an evil spirit.Peter Cushing had a good performance in this, and I liked the sound editing for the most part. For how little dialogue there was in some of the movie, I hoped to enjoy the soundtrack more. Otherwise, this was excruciatingly slow and didn't have notable scares. I think this would have been better if 1) the skull never floated around or committed foul deeds on its own, and they committed to the psychological torture angle and 2) there was actual development as to why Peter Cushing had such an undying need to own the skull after seeing it once.

She starts killing for him to revitalize his body and escape the demonic beings that are pursuing him after he escaped their underworld. This was really only enjoyable when the Cenobites are onscreen. There is so little shown in this movie other than Julia luring men to resurrect Frank, that Kirsty didn't even seem like a fully realized protagonist. This was only worth watching for the practical effects, and even then, I wouldn't recommend

She adopts a cute sloth, thinking it can become the new mascot and help her win, until a string of fatalities implicate the sloth as the main suspect in the murders.I went into this basically based on the pun title, but I was somehow still disappointed in every regard. This failed miserably at being a slasher, with mostly off-screen deaths and little visual spectacle to the ones that were shown, and it failed miserably at being a comedy in almost every forced joke sequence. The sloth acted more like a sadistic human than anything, which also seemed to defeat the purpose of making a slasher with an animal villain (like Cocaine Bear). Just all around bad with a terrible ending

I liked Josh Hutcherson's performance in this and Matthew Lillard was good in his few scenes, but the entirely dropped custody plotline and an overall lack of scares made this a disappointing watch for me.
