10 titles
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice. This is my all time fav Superhero movie - its dark, gritty, has one of the best movie villains of all time, a stunning soundtrack and a near perfect script. Hands down - the Godfather of the Superhero Movie universe.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansSamuel L. JacksonScarlett JohanssonAs Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world, he teams up with a fellow Avenger and S.H.I.E.L.D agent, Black Widow, to battle a new threat from history: an assassin known as the Winter Soldier.A fresh entry in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), the Winter Soldier perfectly blends Superhero movie with Political thriller. The action is outstanding and thrilling to watch every time, with perfect choreography and stunt work. It changes the whole MCU, has great characters with brilliant casting and a very cool soundtrack, and to me, beats out Avengers to claim the title of the best MCU movie ever.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansScarlett JohanssonEarth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.A massive critical and commercial success, Avengers Assemble is a spectacular combination of multiple superhero franchises such as Iron Ma and Thor. The casting is perfection, the dialogue is witty and serious at the same time, and the action is undeniably cool and fulfilling for fans of the comics and films and new comers alike. With a charming Villain, amazing special effects and instantly recognisable musical theme, Avengers Assemble is a must see box office phenomenon.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks.A hilarious and relatable script, combined with a perfect marketing campaign made Deadpool a box office hit, easily out doing every entry in the X-men franchise. And rightly so, Deadpool is something fresh and exciting in the Superhero genre, with hilarious one liners, great action and a spectacularly dedicated performance from Ryan Reynolds. It is truly a marvel to watch and is raunchy, violent and crude all at once - a definite must see - just don't take your children.
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsRobert Downey Jr.Gwyneth PaltrowTerrence HowardAfter being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil. The one that started it all. The first of now 13 movies from the MCU, Iron Man still ranks as one of the best. Downey is perfectly cast as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and the movie did a brilliant job of boosting, as of then, a little recognised hero into one of the most popular. The acting is hilarious, serious and emotional all at once, and the Iron Man suit is just undeniably bad ass. Definitely a fantastic watch, full of thrills, laughter and ACDC.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleTom HardyAnne HathawayEight years after the Joker's reign of chaos, Batman is coerced out of exile with the assistance of the mysterious Selina Kyle in order to defend Gotham City from the vicious guerrilla terrorist Bane. The finale to the Christopher Nolan's epic Dark Knight trilogy, Rises introduces yet another palpable villain in the form of Tom Hardy's no iconic Bane. Hans Zimmer's soundtrack once again shines, as well as Nolan's directing, and the acting of the cast. Hardy does an impressive job making Bane feel like a massive presence and threat to Batman, and Christian Bale does an excellent job, as always, portraying the Caped Crusader.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattVin DieselBradley CooperA group of intergalactic criminals must pull together to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.Witty, hilarious and downright awesome, Guardians of the Galaxy provides a fresh look for the MCU, as the first movie to be completely removed from the location of Earth. The main characters are all quirky, weird and likeable as hell, that anyone who sees this film, comic book fan or not, will instantly fall in love with it - and Groot, 'cus who doesn't love Groot! The 1970's soundtrack that plays through the film is inspired, and each song will have you with a smile on your face, not the mention the amazing special effects and the hilarious dialogue. Go see it.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansRobert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonPolitical involvement in the Avengers' affairs causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.The newly released 13th entry in the MCU has yet to be confirmed in its place in this list. However, the amazing acting, action and premise of the film warrant it a place on this list. Definitely on par with the Winter Soldier in terms of tone, Civil War involves a hoard of titular superheroes, who duke it out in the most glorious 17 minutes ever. Despite the large cast, it still remains a Captain America movie, and we still get the impression it is his movie, not and Avengers movie. That being said, Downey's acting talent here is incredible, some of the best we've seen from him, and it is truly a divide onto whose side people are on. The Russo Brothers do an excellent job of making you root for both teams, where every character is given enough screen time. Black Panther, Spider Man and Ant Man are stand out characters here though.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartIan McKellenHugh JackmanThe X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants. After X-Men first Class got the the franchise back on its feet in fantastic style, director of the first two entries, Bryan Singer, returns to helm Days of Future Past. It is an amazing X-Men film, and I am constantly deciding which one I prefer - this or First Class. Due to the sheer cast though, I decided to put Days of Future Past in. The original and new casts are combined to create an brilliant film, with complex characters, and great action - including the best action scene of 2014 in the form of Quicksilver. Magneto (Fassbender) and Xavier (McCavoy) are pushed further towards their original counterparts, as their story arcs develop further, with McCavoy's Xavier shining as a "tortured soul" in a feat of inspired acting and directing.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsTobey MaguireKirsten DunstAlfred MolinaPeter Parker is beset with troubles in his failing personal life as he battles a former brilliant scientist named Otto Octavius. This spot almost went to Ant Man, believe it or not, but then i realised what films started off my love for comic book movies - Sam Ramie's spiderman trilogy. Spider-Man 2 is easily the best of the 3, with one of the best comic book villains put to screen, in the form of Doctor Octopus played by Alfred Molina. The film is funny, considerably less campy than the first (which is still great) and has much better action. I'd recommend watching the first Spider before this of course, but the sequel does a rare feat of outshine its predecessor - go watch the last truly great spider man film.
