- DirectorFrank CapraStarsCary GrantPriscilla LaneRaymond MasseyA Brooklyn writer of books on the futility of marriage risks his reputation after he decides to tie the knot. Things get even more complicated when he learns on his wedding day that his beloved maiden aunts are habitual murderers. This is such a hilarious, rapid fire comedy. Sadly, its great writing was overlooked by the Academy.
- DirectorJim AbrahamsDavid ZuckerJerry ZuckerStarsRobert HaysJulie HagertyLeslie NielsenAfter the crew becomes sick with food poisoning, a neurotic ex-fighter pilot must safely land a commercial airplane full of passengers. The BAFTA's nominated it for best screenplay, but the Academy did not do so. No Oscar nominations for this comedy classic.
- DirectorMathieu KassovitzStarsVincent CasselHubert KoundéSaïd Taghmaoui24 hours in the lives of three young men in the French suburbs the day after a violent riot. This is such a powerful film, and in my opinion one of the best of the 1990's. Unfortunately, this was not France's submission for the foreign language film category that year (the comedy "French Twist" or "Gazon maudit" en francais was submitted instead.) In the end, it wasn't nominated for anything.
- DirectorPhil LordChristopher MillerStarsAnna FarisBill HaderBruce CampbellA local scientist is often regarded as a failure until he invents a machine that can make food fall from the sky. But little does he know that things are about to take a turn for the worst.Such a cute movie! I was quite surprised that I enjoyed it so much, and so were audiences across the country. Granted, there was no beating "Up" for the best animated feature film Oscar, but it would have been nice if this was at least nominated.
- DirectorClaude BerriStarsYves MontandGérard DepardieuDaniel AuteuilA greedy landowner and his backward nephew conspire to block the only water source for an adjoining property in order to bankrupt the owner and force him to sell.Such an intregal part of French cinema, the film was nominated for the Golden Globe for best foreign film as well as several BAFTA's, however no Oscars. France's entry to the foreign language film category that year was "37°2 le matin" (English title "Betty Blue")
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleTom HardyAnne HathawayEight years after the Joker's reign of chaos, Batman is coerced out of exile with the assistance of the mysterious Selina Kyle in order to defend Gotham City from the vicious guerrilla terrorist Bane.Although it wasn't nearly as good as its predecessor, it was still well done as far as sound and visual effects. However, it didn't receive nominations for either.
- DirectorMel BrooksStarsMel BrooksJohn CandyRick MoranisA star-pilot for hire and his trusty sidekick must come to the rescue of a princess and save Planet Druidia from the clutches of the evil Spaceballs.Yes it does seem strange to complain about this being snubbed by the Academy, but it had good make-up effects for which it was not nominated for.
- DirectorNeill BlomkampStarsMatt DamonJodie FosterSharlto CopleyIn the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.Very thought provoking and amazingly good sound and visual effects. No nominations though.
- DirectorPenny MarshallStarsTom HanksGeena DavisLori PettyTwo sisters join the first female professional baseball league and struggle to help it succeed amid their own growing rivalry.I loved this movie. The Oscars didn't though.
- DirectorDrew GoddardStarsKristen ConnollyChris HemsworthAnna HutchisonFive college friends head out to a remote cabin for a getaway, but things don't go as planned when they start getting killed. They soon discover that there is more to the cabin than it seems.Joss Whedon is such a creative writer, and this was one of his most original works yet. Being overlooked by the Academy was so unfortunate, but to be expected since the film was released early in the year.
- DirectorSydney PollackStarsNicole KidmanSean PennCatherine KeenerPolitical intrigue and deception unfold inside the United Nations, where a U.S. Secret Service agent is assigned to investigate an interpreter who overhears an assassination plot.Well written, great acting, both overlooked by the Academy.
