Music is an essential part of a movie, it creates another dimension to the medium through which more emotion is conveyed. This list is an ode to the -in my opinion- most powerful music made for film.

- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsYôji MatsudaYuriko IshidaYûko TanakaOn a journey to find the cure for a Tatarigami's curse, Ashitaka finds himself in the middle of a war between the forest gods and Tatara, a mining colony. In this quest he also meets San, the Mononoke Hime.Joe Hisaishi has made music for over 90 films, and of all the ones that I have seen, this one was his best work; It completely fits the story and adds to the immersion.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsHarrison FordRutger HauerSean YoungA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.Vangelis is one of the best music composers of all time, it just so happens that he also made music for films and this has got to be his masterpiece; music can't get more atmospheric than this.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsHenry FondaCharles BronsonClaudia CardinaleA mysterious stranger with a harmonica joins forces with a notorious desperado to protect a beautiful widow from a ruthless assassin working for the railroad. You want to know how the music for a Western sounds? Just listen to the soundtrack for this movie and you'll see that almost every western made after this one copied at least some part of this genre-defining masterpiece.
- DirectorKenji KamiyamaHiroyuki OkiuraStarsMichael DobsonYoshikazu FujikiSumi MutohA traumatized member of an elite para-military police force falls for the sister of a female terrorist courier who died in front of him on duty.Less is more; the less complicated the music is you use, the more impact it will have if used correctly. This film is a good example.
- DirectorTony ScottStarsGene HackmanDenzel WashingtonMatt CravenOn a U.S. nuclear missile sub, a young First Officer stages a mutiny to prevent his trigger happy Captain from launching his missiles before confirming his orders to do so.Not a bad film per se, but I will always remember it for the great music, not so much the story.
- DirectorJean-Pierre JeunetStarsAudrey TautouMathieu KassovitzRufusDespite being caught in her imaginative world, Amelie, a young waitress, decides to help people find happiness. Her quest to spread joy leads her on a journey where she finds true love.I'm a big fan of Yann Tiersen's work and minimalistic piano music, this soundtrack thus is a win-win.
- DirectorSam MendesStarsKevin SpaceyAnnette BeningThora BirchA sexually frustrated suburban father has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend. If, like me, you're a fan of instrumental songs with an unique and delightful style to then, go listen to the full track. You won't be disappointed. Only downfall is that the songs are really short.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenOrlando BloomA meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron. One of the reasons why I gave myself the room of subjectivity; the best explanation i can give is sentimental value. It still gives me the chills, so yes sentimentality is enough for me to rate it among my top ten favourite soundtracks.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsAustin StokerDarwin JostonLaurie ZimmerA Highway Patrol Officer, two criminals and a station secretary defend a defunct Los Angeles precinct office against a siege by a bloodthirsty street gang.John Carpenter composed the main theme himself, so it would perfectly fit in the story; it's primarily the only music in the film. Why is it so good then? The way it's introduced; little bits at a time, becoming progressivly menacing as time goes one. It gets to the point where only the theme is enough to drive you to the tip of your seat. Sounds familiar? Yeah, I prefer this to Jaw's theme, otherwise that one would be on the list for the same reason.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsBill PullmanPatricia ArquetteJohn RoseliusAnonymous videotapes presage a musician's murder conviction, and a gangster's girlfriend leads a mechanic astray.David Lynch knows his music, and he chose the most fitting songs for his beautiful and weird film. The highlight of the soundtrack is 'song to the siren' from This Mortal Coil, i'm still baffled that in the version that I saw it wasn't featured in the credits.
