- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsJude LawJennifer Jason LeighIan HolmA game designer on the run from assassins must play her latest virtual reality creation with a marketing trainee to determine if the game has been damaged.Amazing film. Anybody who doesn't like it, fine, but this is a masterpiece of film here with broad statements about multimedia and how we engage with it, and where it could go in the future.
- DirectorPanos CosmatosStarsEva BourneMichael J RogersScott HylandsDespite being under heavy sedation, a young woman tries to make her way out of the Arboria Institute, a secluded, quasifuturistic commune.A slow pace may drive people off from this. If you can handle it, I think the pay off is worth the wait. Simple premise of a girl, who has some sort of telekinetic abilities, who is trapped in a high-tech and supposed utopia-style commune fights to leave, as her doctor tries to prevent her from doing so. A lot of influences here, all melted into one incredible piece of film.
- DirectorAndrei TarkovskyStarsNatalya BondarchukDonatas BanionisJüri JärvetA psychologist is sent to a station orbiting a distant planet in order to discover what has caused the crew to go insane.A wonderful mixture of drama and science fiction. Smart and deep film.
- DirectorLana WachowskiLilly WachowskiStarsKeanu ReevesLaurence FishburneCarrie-Anne MossWhen a beautiful stranger leads computer hacker Neo to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth--the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence.Somewhere near the apex of what action-science fiction should be. Incredible achievements in many areas. No matter how people feel about Keanu, I think he fit Neo perfectly, and that's why I can watch this movie over and over.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin. No more needs to be said. I watch this one every couple months.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsSigourney WeaverMichael BiehnCarrie HennDecades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring. One of the most perfect sequels ever made. Hell of a blast.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsSigourney WeaverCharles S. DuttonCharles DanceReturning from LV-426, Ellen Ripley crash-lands on the maximum-security prison Fiorina 161, where she discovers that she has unwittingly brought along an unwelcome visitor.I know the general consensus on this film, but I love it. Great addition to the Alien franchise, and I think there are some spectacular moments.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsNoomi RapaceLogan Marshall-GreenMichael FassbenderFollowing clues to the origin of mankind, a team finds a structure on a distant moon, but they soon realize they are not alone.Again, I understand a lot of people felt let down by this film. Me? I loved it, every second. I can re-watch this one just as often as I can the first. The addition of Fassbender and Rapace really did it for me.
- DirectorIrvin KershnerStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter the Rebel Alliance are overpowered by the Empire, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett.My favourite of any Star Wars film. This one has the best style, as far as I'm concerned.
- DirectorTerry GilliamStarsBruce WillisMadeleine StoweBrad PittIn a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.Terry Gilliam is a delight, especially when it comes to visions of a dystopian future. Here, both Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt shine. The story is a masterpiece.
- DirectorTerry GilliamStarsJonathan PryceKim GreistRobert De NiroA bureaucrat in a dystopic society becomes an enemy of the state as he pursues the woman of his dreams.Another Gilliam work of art. This is one of my favourite science fiction films of all-time. Gilliam adds the comedy necessary to really make it all work; there is a little bit of everything here. The first time I saw this film, it was on television, and the strange masks nearing the end really stuck with me for years.
- DirectorUbaldo RagonaSidney SalkowStarsVincent PriceFranca BettoiaEmma DanieliWhen a disease turns all of humanity into the living dead, the last man on earth becomes a reluctant vampire hunter. The best telling of this story. Plus, Vincent Price- nothing more needs saying.
- DirectorMarc CaroJean-Pierre JeunetStarsRon PerlmanDaniel EmilforkJudith VittetA scientist in a surrealist society kidnaps children to steal their dreams, hoping that they slow his aging process.Certain films strain themselves to be strange, which makes them fail. This film, however, is strange enough to be excellent. And Ron Perlman shows up, doing what he does best: act his ass off.
- DirectorJoe BegosStarsGraham SkipperJosh EthierVanessa LeighMark Fisher disappeared from his home in a brilliant flash of blue light almost 2 years ago. His friend Seth Hampton was the last to see him alive. Now a string of grisly, violent murders leads Seth to believe that Mark is back, and something evil is inside of him.I waited awhile to see this one, and was not disappointed. A really wild ride of alien abductions and what happens when the aliens return the ones they've abducted.
- DirectorLuc BessonStarsBruce WillisMilla JovovichGary OldmanIn the colorful future, a cab driver unwittingly becomes the central figure in the search for a legendary cosmic weapon to keep Evil and Mr. Zorg at bay.Bruce Willis is killer here. The story is phenomenal. Visuals rock- hard. The action also goes hard.
- DirectorJosh TrankStarsDane DeHaanAlex RussellMichael B. JordanThree high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery underground. Soon they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides. One of the better sci-fi films to come out in awhile, and it also does well using the found footage format. An absolutely great watch with great performances.
- DirectorJohn McTiernanStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerCarl WeathersKevin Peter HallA team of commandos on a mission in a Central American jungle find themselves hunted by an extraterrestrial warrior.Action packed science fiction with a little bit of Arnold, and a few other ass kickers. The Predator is probably one of the most bad ass sci-fi characters ever created.
- DirectorTarsem SinghStarsJennifer LopezVince VaughnVincent D'OnofrioAn F.B.I. Agent persuades a social worker, who is adept with a new experimental technology, to enter the mind of a comatose serial killer in order to learn where he has hidden his latest kidnap victim.Verges on horror, but mainly this goes for science fiction. Even Jennifer Lopez pulls her weight here. Vincent D'onofrio puts in a fine performance, among his many, and really makes the film work. Vince Vaughn, too.
- DirectorIain SoftleyStarsKevin SpaceyJeff BridgesMary McCormackPROT is a patient at a mental hospital who claims to be from a faraway planet named K-PAX. His psychiatrist tries to help him, only to begin to doubt his own explanations. This wasn't exactly received well, but I cannot get enough of this film. Both Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges are solid here. The story is absolutely incredible, as far as I'm concerned. I found it a refreshing twist when so many sci-fi films go for the same old fodder.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellLee Van CleefErnest BorgnineIn 1997, when the U.S. president crashes into Manhattan, now a giant maximum security prison, a convicted bank robber is sent in to rescue him.John Carpenter. Kurt Russell. That is all.
- DirectorJonathan FrakesStarsPatrick StewartJonathan FrakesBrent SpinerThe Borg travel back in time intent on preventing Earth's first contact with an alien species. Captain Picard and his crew pursue them to ensure that Zefram Cochrane makes his maiden flight reaching warp speed. One of my top three Star Trek films. The story here is a great one, very entertaining. This one has enough humour, enough darkness, and enough action to make it highly memorable.
- DirectorMario BavaStarsBarry SullivanNorma BengellÁngel ArandaAfter landing on a mysterious planet, a team of astronauts begin to turn on each other, swayed by the uncertain influence of the planet and its strange inhabitants.Creepy. A very creepy, strange science fiction film from the mid-60s.
- DirectorJack SholderStarsKyle MacLachlanMichael NouriClaudia ChristianA cop and an FBI agent race for answers after law abiding people suddenly become violent criminals.Weird, and a HELL of a lot of fun.
- DirectorBarry LevinsonStarsDustin HoffmanSharon StoneSamuel L. JacksonA spaceship is discovered under three hundred years' worth of coral growth at the bottom of the ocean.Fun story with great performances, especially Hoffman.
- DirectorPaul W.S. AndersonStarsLaurence FishburneSam NeillKathleen QuinlanA rescue crew is tasked with investigating the mysterious reappearance of a spaceship that had been lost for seven years.Extremely creepy. I love this one, and watch it several times a year at least.
